I didn't think the Bruins intimidated the Canucks much. They tried to early in the game but the Canucks had pushback. Ferland would be a real bonus add if he can stay healthy. Not sure how the CAP will handle Ferland and Leivo back?
-
The grind headed towards the end of the season will be a huge leaning curve and actual playoffs will be a bonus. I said last spring this team will make playoffs and I still think they will. That said I have no illusions that this group will get past the 1st round, absolutely fantastic if they get to the 2nd round. This whole experience is all about development of the young core towards serious CUP contention in 3 years. In Benning we trust! My attitude towards acquiring vets for a playoff run is a big nyet. Even selective selling is preferable. The biggest issues are player development and CAP management. Benning has the players to actually make hockey trades in contrast to even 2 years ago. The Canucks are well into a new era where Utica actually have players who will play in the NHL. The Canucks have a young core that will attract UFA's who want to have a CUP shot. This is an exciting time for fans.

I thought you made your own?

With the NHL youth movement I don't see much interest in Loui. He has been playing much better but his CAP hit is an anchor. Realistically once Leivo is ready he likely slots back in on Bo's line. Leivo was well on his way to a career high and establishing himself as a 2/3 forward. His injury might allow JB to re-sign him at an affordable contract. Ericksson has to go somehow.

Tanev is having a great year. He will want a raise and term. Unfortunately I cannot see how the Canucks can commit to either. CAP is a real issue.

IMHO Fantenberg is now the 5D. Another solid game by him. Jim Benning has said he wants some games for his AHL standouts. He had Rafferty up and then sent him down. He has Big Mac and Bailey to considered. Either Schaller or Ericksson, or both have to sit some games for these two to play. Rafferty should have played in Stecher's spot. -
I doubt there will be enough CAP space to re-sign Tanev.
-
If Tryamkin was available before the TDL then he steps in for Stecher. Quite honestly I feel Fantenberg is now 5D on the club. The real issue faced by Benning is whether to move Stecher or Tanev before the TDL. Highly doubtful he can resign both without threatening his CAP framework. Both will want raises and term. Very hard decision. Tanev at 30 with 3/4 year term is almost a non starter IMO. What can JB get for Tanev. He is having an excellent season.

Unbelievable!

It makes you wonder what the problem is. They had no trouble sending 7-8 planes to Syria to lift refugees out of there. Other countries are getting their people out. Do you think the Chinese are not co-operating because it is Canada?
-
Bomber was a steady cash taker for decades. Billions of $'s gone. IMHO there is a solid portion of our economy that relies on government handouts. Perhaps if the country is dealing from financial strength it might make sense. Any suggestion that capital costs are not at all time lows is highly questionable. Lots of venture capital in the market place. Yet lots of people and companies ask for handouts. All of these decisions seem to be dealt with in isolation. Canada is in serious financial shape as is the rest of the world. BNN spends an hour discussing family debt when a poll suggests 50% of the citizens of this country are $200 away from bankruptcy. Small favors that they spent an hour as that was 100% more than they did trying to elevate the level of debate during the last election. The country stumbles along with no strategy to defend the nation. Economic dependence on the USA limits any independent action away from American influence. Canada cannot defend her borders. The USA, China and Russia are all establishing themselves in the Arctic. The USA and China exert huge pressure to keep Canada as a source of their raw material needs. Canada's industrial strategy of the '50's, AutoPact, has/is collapsing. Hundreds of billions of public $'s spent on it. NAFTA 2.0 was a capitulation to the USA. Trump has made it clear to the world that his first priority is to the USA. It is about time that Canadian politicians used the same resolve.

Interesting observation. I can't say that I saw that. Petey never seems to get very expressive. Miller on the otherhand is way more aggressive. I think his influence on the younger players will be felt for years. Miller walks the walk and has to have a lot of cred in the group. Miller was also on the TBay team when a serious CUP contender. Lots of experience. Travis Green learned his hockey in Castlegar &Trail. Hockey in the West Kootenays was greatly influenced by the SmokeEater vets who played on the senior team that played internationally before the pros were let in. Some very smart players in that group. Almost 1000 NHL games with Al Arbour hs first NHL coach. Lots of cred. -
CAP limits but also Seabrook is a regular scratch in Chicago.
-
Motte will be missed. He brings a solid 200' game with physicality.
-
He has been on the 4th since returning from injury. Sutter is a smart player with experience. He can be moved up the lines as well. The 4th line has been playing well enough that they can take some TOI off the 1st & 2nd which will be a bonus come playoffs. EP40 is not playing + 20 TOI games as much as last year. Goota help down the stretch.
-
Impressive looking. Pair him with Tryamkin or Meyers.
-
I watched the game and both Woo and Focht had great games. At 6' and 190 pounds he likes to use the body but he is not a big kid. He rushed the puck well a number of times.

My observation would be the number of times Schaller turned the puck in the NYI game. All experienced NHL'ers on that line. With less than 5 left in the game chipping the puck out along the boards is in order versus passing in the d-zone. I like Beagle and Sutter and a little less love for Schaller. -

Hughes is getting a lot of accolades right now and fair enough. That said it is his rookie season and a lot of teams are being taken by surprise just like Petey did last year. Hughes has to be a nightmare coming down on you as his mobility and willingness to drive deep causes all sorts of problems for defenders. I high lighted Petterssen because this is his 2nd season and his development continues to drive upwards. Talk about a 200' game. He dominates many games. IMHO EP40-Miller-Hughes see the game at another level. All three are extraordinary. -
I'm reading Cujo's book. Really laughed when he explained how he ended up in TO from Edmonton. He thought he was headed to Philly as a UFA. His agent Donnie Mehan lived in the same neighborhood of TO as Kenny Dryden the Laffers GM of that time. Both of them head to the corner store for icecream and bump into one another. The ensuing convo leads Dryden to thinking about Cujo and they get the call. 4 year deal at $6 mil/season. Love that story.

Really upset with my Amazon experience. I got stopped out last spring on 3/4 of my holdings. Bought back in at a half allocation and thought I would have another crack at $1700. That ship has sailed. Bezos is scary smart. -
All options have to be considered. The closer it gets to ED the more players who will be in play and I suspect the values go down. Leivo becomes an interesting subject. I would argue he was well on his way to a breakout season. Does Benning see it that way and want to give him another opportunity? I think Roussel is on the bubble as well.

[Signing] Oilers re-sign Zack Kassian
Boudrias replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Congrats to Kass. Very few players who is as open as Kass is. Great team player and a player who can pull off a great play when needed. Wears his heart on his sleeve. I will never forget his stretch with the Twins when everything was working for him. A sight to see. -
This roster needs playoff experience but Benning should not be buying talent. He should be using his prospects if needed. Talks of acquiring another top 6 forward is highly counterproductive when you consider the cost. I said last spring that the team would make playoffs this year and stand by that. That said serious CUP contention is 2-3 years out. Build towards that by developing the prospect pool.
