  1. On the physical side of Jake's game I look at puck possession, particularly in the ozone. Jake's ability to retain the puck is physical in nature as he is difficult to knock off the puck. He establishes body position and evaluates opportunities. IMHO he will only get better at this.
  2. For sure there are different situations for most players. I was talking about CuJo's experience. He actually was never drafted and signed as a free agent with St. Louis. That said he was a NCAA 2nd All-Star. He had half a dozen NHL teams courting him and He knew in advance that his contract would be millions of $. If you enjoy reading such books I highly recommend this one. Curtis Joseph had a pretty brutal youth. He says hockey saved him.
  3. Include all the East Kootenay. We elected Reform in '93 and our MP regularly polled +65%. Reform appeal was across the political spectrum NDP to Conservative. We were being screwed by the east then and still are. Feelings have not changed. A lot of retired Albertans or descendants of Albertans.
  4. You would think so but we all know that isn't happening. The USA advantage on the Gulf Coast is that their infrastructure is already built. Although no new refineries are being built the old ones are constantly being upgraded. Americans are exporting some refined product but most is consumed there. Build a 500K boe/d plant in Rupert or Vancouver and all of it would have to be shipped. Whether crude or refined product it is still a commodity and gets market price. Who would be the market for a west coast refinery? Can you refine product more cheaply in Malaysia, yes. Ignore the economics and consider national security issues for the importer. Do you think China would take the risk that their refined supply could be shut off by Canada or be at risk in transit? You notice there is no press from the Black Group who were promoting a west coast refinery. I never thought they would get the financing anyway. Interpipe's polypropylene plant in AB at $3.5 billion is probably the best investment.
  5. I don't think there has been a major refinery built in the USA in 20 years +. State of the art plants consume 500 K boe/d. Not sure but the last I knew Shell Scotford in Edmonton was at 200K boe/d. What do you do with millions of barrels of refined product on a day by day basis? Consumption can be highly seasonal for specific products. For example diesel in fall and winter and gasoline in summer. The American advantage is their refineries have easy access to tidewater. A great marketing advantage. The truly advantaged operation in Canada is the Irving plant in Halifax. 300K boe/d and on tidewater. They supply eastern Canada and the eastern USA.
  6. The Chinese are an amazingly resilient people. Hang in there Smokes.
  7. I was a long term conservative and thought how Canada was ruled could be changed. No longer. I will vote Wexit both federally and provincially. Many parts of BC would gladly join AB & Sask.
  8. I just cannot shake the image of Tryamkin at RD and Edler at LD both smoking guys. Myers with equal size if not weight. My simple hockey mind dwells on the idea that bigger players can handle serious CUP play better, less injury. When it comes down to TOI at RD you look at Myers-Tanev-Tryamkin. Myers is on the 2PP and Tanev is on the 1PK. I expect Tryamkin can float between both and still get his TOI.
  9. I am reading Curtis Joseph's bio book. He played one year of collegiate hockey and then went pro with the St. Louis Blues. One of the deciding factors in going pro was the risk of injury either ending his pro ambitions or at a minimum shortening his pro career. What we tend to forget with these kids is that they have seen team mates through their climb up thru the ranks fall by the wayside because of injury. Any player would be foolish if he did not recognize that his next shift could be his last.
  10. So much of our economics is based on a ongoing expanding market place. Deflation is now our reality. Shrinking populations in advanced economies and automation. Whatever comes out of this debt restructuring will be on the scale of the Industrial Revolution. As much as I still have faith in man's ability to regenerate it will likely be a very ugly process. Consider the implications if every $ of spending was determined by needs of food-clothing-shelter. The loss of jobs will be massive.
  11. Defaulting on your bonds triggers a lot of trouble. How do you sell anymore? The bond market is 3X bigger than the equity market. Bonds form a huge part of every pension fund in the world. Nope, I don't see an outright default but monetizing the value simply achieves the same thing over more time. As I said it is a confidence game. When the guy on the street losses faith in the "system" they usually quit all spending and liquidity in the market dries up. Progressives love to talk about Hoover not spending during the depression and that caused the dire economics. Partially true but consumer spending drying up was a huge factor. Lack of confidence.
  12. One would expect the value of hard assets to increase in a debt crisis. The issue might become demand and how much the world would want those assets and the price they would be able to pay. The impending debt crisis will likely be monetized as the only means of paying it off. Highly inflationary. I simply see no way out of this. It will be incredibly destructive and take decades to fix.
  13. I found budgeting for multiple years became a very accurate forecaster. It made me very leery about the impact of AI in all facets of life where data can establish trends.
  14. Drive her to the border and turn her over to USA Immigration.
  15. The economic fallout of debt already exists in Canada as 50% of the population flirts with bankruptcy. American debt is not unique in this world as the Euros have been essentially bankrupt for over 10 years. America has been cutting the allowances they have been gifting to many countries for decades. More obvious under Trump but started with George Bush and continued by Obama. World debt is a confidence game perpetrated by governments by deficit spending and money printing to increase liquidity. It devalues savings and pushes citizens further out onto the risk curve. Canada will not be saved and I would even suggest it will be one of the hardest hit, harder than the Americans.
  16. If Bo is busy at Disney who is keeping an eye on Jake?
  17. I was in Moscow for the 1974 WHA series. What will always stick with me was 4000 drunk Canadians sitting in the arena looking across to a solid Russian crowd dressed in black. The Russian crowds were very quiet for the first 2 games but let loose for the final 2 games.
  18. As fans we often look at the mechanics of the game to judge the effectiveness of a player. IMHO what is ignored to some extent is the players emotional approach. At the NHL level all players want to win but their intellectual approaches can vary widely. From a Zach Kassian to a Loui Ericksson the divide can be huge. When I look at Alex Edler it seems he has a huge desire to win which manifests in trying to make a dif in the past by making higher risk plays. As you pointed out this approach has been dialed back. He has a stronger roster that he can rely on and less TOI which IMO compliments his game rather than hurts. We don't know what the depth will be when Edler's current contract expires. I would not be surprised to see him re-up on 1 year deals.
  19. The Dippers back in the '80's and 90's wanted to mandate that all waste be trucked from cut blocks and that material be used as hog fuel to generate co-gen power. It never got traction because the economics simply were not there. Yes, hog fuel generated in mills from debarking and trimming are shipped to co-gen plants. At least in our area. Another interesting aspect of waste in the bush was the realization that it provided nutrient and shade protection for new growth. A real added cost in reforestation as planters have to work over or around the debris.
  20. What cleanup are logging companies not doing? I know that burning waste piles have been cut back or even eliminated. In the 80's & 90's I was involved in control burns to clear up waste. Enviromentalists didn't like that. Like everywhere the combustable material in the bush was building up over the years because of how efficient fire crews were in stopping fires. A lot of fires now are let burn by forestry.
  21. Who's wood is up White Swan? Canfor? If it is private land outside a license it can be clear cut. If you drive thru Yahk all that wood on the east side of the road is from private land. If you get as far as Creston look to the north and you will see the mountain side above Wynndel is bare. Private land.
  22. Tell them we will get the same security detail that Epstein had. Those not in jail have been laid off. PS Jeff Epstein did not kill himself! Does anyone care?
