  1. A fun game to watch if you don't dwell to long in the d-zone. Virtanen and Gaudette lost some TOI but I saw Virt get at least one shift and Ericksson sat. One of the most fascinating adds this year was JT Miller. He is having a great season and has a level of awareness that truly impresses. His interviews are often curious as he doesn't really hide anything. Last night he was not particularly positive post game. The mental lapses on a young team are often and it takes experience to reduce them. Miller has seen all this in TBay with a roster more talented than what Vancouver is right now. I have argued that the Canucks would make playoffs this year but will be surprised if they get past the 1st round. Whether a 1st or 2nd round the experience will be what starts to mold this young core towards CUP quality play. That will require a much higher level of play in their d-zone. IMO Miller knows this and few others on the roster do. Very little playoff experience. Good game boys, enjoy!
  2. I don't think it is that simple. Religion is often used in political ways. You gave no comment to @RowdyCanuck suggestion that KKK members could wear their garb to work using your reasoning. You are negative about the Quebec exclusion of religious symbolism being worn but that ban applies to all religion. Many are identifying this as a anti Islamic effort but this kinda ignores the influence the Catholic church had in Quebec for hundreds of years.
  3. If you want to control retail gas prices then what margin are you suggesting is equitable? You seem to be suggesting a cost of production + a margin? Most sectors have a pricing structure based on what the market will bear. ie retail has margins all over the place but + 200% is not unusual. Gold miners can only influence gold bullion pricing by limiting production. I think Kirkland Lake's all in cost are $850/once and market is $1525 = +79%. Both gold and oil is a finite resource. Is 79% margin a fair retail margin?
  4. Since when did retail become a cost plus experience. If you are upset about gas prices and think your arithmetic is all that is involved then I have a simple observation. Until you see the day that Governments force refiners out of the retail market their talk is all BS. I was in the business for 25 years. Establish rack pricing in Vancouver, Kamloops, Calgary, Edmonton. Leave the option of transportation cost up to the retailer. The industry is a lot more complicated than most people want to think about.
  5. Hunter can be thankful he didn't end up on that team that sacrifice goats at center ice before games.
  6. All I know is that Shotgun has provided a steady flow of libation over an extended period. I am all ready for that to continue.
  7. Have a soft spot for Rick Ley. WE had my son's bantam team in Van for Provincial Championships. Two of our coaches went to a lounge during the tourny (not cool today I guess) and got to meet Ley and had a great convo with him. He said bring the team down to practice and you will be let in. We did and were let in to GM Place. The down side was that the boys had to sit on the opposite side of the arena from the players bench and had to keep quiet! Basically they were ignored other than by Tim Hunter, Esa Tikanen and the goal tender who's name escapes me. All the same Ley was good on his word and the boys were blown away.
  8. The d-core is Bennings biggest challenge right now. There are good prospects coming. In 2 seasons we should have the core there.
  9. Forsberg has a CUP the Twins don't. In the case of the Twins the GM had to get players who would have defended them. It is fine to say that finesse and a PP will deter abuse but when a team is losing like Boston was they have no other options. They went heavy and Van didn't have an answer.
  10. There is no doubt that equity valuations are way above historical. S&P historical P/E is 15 and is now at 22. Because of age I hold blue chip dividend payers in CDN $ and buy USD $ stocks in sectors I cannot get good exposure in Canada. To counter the threat of a market pull back I bought gold and some short term bond ETF's. I run a sheet that tells me my $ total in each industry sector, the ROE and the CF they generate. I have my target allocations and adjust accordingly. I am so old that cashing out of my stocks and trying to time a buyback would cost huge capital gain tax. The hell if I will give that jerk Turdeau anymore than I have too. My kids can do that when I kick off! Trying to time markets is a tough call. So many pensions depend on capital markets so I don't see governments standing by for extended periods. This likely wishful thinking as I do see global debt as the #1 problem facing the world. The next time you are in a social situation look around and ask yourself how the people you see make a living? I did that at X-Mass and only 2 of 11 people worked in private enterprise jobs.
  11. This is being blown out of proportion. The kid left his helmut on and shouldn't have. He was reprimanded and that should be it. People have short memories. I remember in 2005(?) when Team Canada absolutely destroyed Team Russia. Only 4 Russians stayed on the ice for the national anthem. One being Ovy. By the way Ovy was targeted for heavy body work as he was the big threat. Malkin was on that team as well and gave the Canadian team and the fans the finger as he left the ice. So lets put this in some context. If people want to get upset how about suggesting that SN rein in their reporters who refer to every Canadian kid as the next coming of Gretzky. It is brutal the way they pump these kids up. They want human interest to get audience but the long term harm could be significant.
  12. If they bring him up he has to bump one of the playing LD + Benn who is waiting to come back in. I would be quite happy to see him play the season out with Utica and have a long Calder run. However, injuries happen as we all know.
  13. What neither one of us mentioned was the power in these highway units. 600 - 700 horse power. That might even be old news. I am always amazed at the speed these guys can climb mountains now versus the '80's & '90's. I was talking to a chip truck driver who told me that his on board computer system anticipates his position on his route and tells him what gears to use! Wow!
  14. My history is the same. I ran delivery local trucks for 25 years and had contract haulers bringing fuel out of Calgary. When I left the industry in '96 the oversight by government was huge. Pre-trip inspection reports and load manifests all retained for inspection. Mandatory hazardous goods training and fire fighting training. There are always bad apples in every industry. Road side inspections and scales were designed to counter unsafe practices. In my day any firm that sent trucks into the USA were subject to USA audits in their Canadian offices. WHat I notice on the road is how often scales are not open. If government wants a safe industry then man them! There are unsafe drivers whether by negligence or ignorance no matter their race. Testing and re-testing would change that. I frequent a Timmy's at 5 am on Tuesdays and most of the long haul truckers who stop for a coffee are East Indians. I respect anyone who gets up and works for a living. The default conclusion that the industry is ran by a bunch of exploitive owners is an over simplification. Contracts made and shortages of labor causes problems. Just in time delivery scheds causes problems. Lots of financial challenges for a trucking company. Massive investment and thin margins. The trucking incident that stays with me is an accident back in the '80's. A young driver stopped at my business and asked for info about the Kootenay Pass. It was winter and he was hauling a load of salt to Trail. We told him that he had to chain up if the signs were up and to talk to other drivers on his CB. He had to stop at the summit and check his brakes. For whatever reason he did not stop at the summit and rode his brakes down the other side. We assume he missed a gear on the way down and lost it. He went over the edge and was killed.
  15. The Flame team from 3 years ago had a pretty solid d-core that sheltered their forwards to an extent. I didn’t see as much evidence of that last night. I never thought Johnny Hockey was as good for the long term as he was credited. Sam Bennet was rushed into the NHL the same way Virt was. Calgary was starved for talent the same as Van was. Green saved Virtanen ‘s career.
  16. Nice summary. Totally agree with #3 as Pearson-Bo-Ericksson had a solid outing. Both Pearson and Virtanen are producing secondary scoring that really counts. Pearson is a player you have to really watch to appreciate what he does. Jake must have one of the heaviest shots on the team. Salute to the centers for their FO dominance. Puck possession really helps particularly in the d-zone. Edler comes back in and the d-zone improves a lot. Solid ozone pressure most of the game. Nice team speed. That alone warrants the win even if the Canucks were getting some 'puck luck' for a change. How that 2nd Meyers goal ever went in is a head scratcher.
  17. Isn't watching TV without the commercials illegal? I am doing the same PVR thing. Both Lynch and Virtanen hitting the line. Nice warm fire, good to go.
  18. I like the German team. Fast with some skill. 4 seventeen year olds on the team. Canada lost to the Ruskies 6-0 so they had better not take the Germans lightly.
  19. When Sutter and the boys won 5 straight the east couldn't stand it. To many WHL kids. Canada hasn't done much since. That aside I think there is a problem with the elite teams. They pump these kids full of media hype to sell more stuff. Young and impressionable.
  20. My comments are a weak attempt at humor. My wife comes from Blueberry Creek and her mother knew the Green family well. In those days and even today the Doukhabor community is a big part of the area. When Larionov played for the Canucks he traveled to Grand Forks and spent time there. Not sure if he made it to Castlegar. My take on Larionov is that he is a solid influence on Goldy, Pouds and I hope Tryamkin. Seeing him on the bench at the WJC is a great sight.
  21. A few years younger but have been with the Canucks since the beginning. Tell my kids they cannot bury me until the Canucks win a CUP! I made the mistake of buying my son a Oilers jersey at a Van game back in the '80's and he has been a Oiler's fan since. He confessed at X-Mass that he is straddling both camps right now. So disappointed in the Oilers that he is almost ready to make the full move. Love Motte by the way.
  22. No matter what moniker you use, Big Tuna or Shotgun Jake, he is fun to watch. Ready for him to have a very strong game against the Kings.
  23. Did SJ release him outright or retain his rights?
  24. Not getting up tight about OJ this year at all. I just want him to get his games in with as much TOI as he can handle. Utica will get some playoff games to boot. When was the last season where Joulevi played hockey in the spring? Fans should ease up a tad.
