  1. OJ played his 1st OHL season on a very offensive minded club and he got a good share of the points. Last year Hunter refocused his game into a more defensive role and he had a great season and still put up points. During the Mem Cup Hunter had Joulevi playing both the PP and PK and logging lots of TOI. It was very clear that Hunter valued OJ as his #1 d-man. I am hoping he spends another season in London playing for a NHL quality coach. The London roster should have more offence and we will see how Joulevi is played. I expect more offence from him. I do not think we can clearly estimate Joulevi's offensive upside yet. He has excellent ice vision and with NHL caliber team mates might surprise some fans.
  2. Vancouver is desperate for size up front IMO. A potential Tanev deal does not look great prior to or during the Draft. Was hoping for a 3OA deal with Dallas. Not to say that it is not revived pending Dallas wanting to make a big move. Their CAP is a issue which might force them to deal. Benning left Sbisa exposed to the ED so I assume he ran his numbers and thinks Vegas will pick other d-men. If that pans out then Tanev could be traded yet.
  3. Vancouver is desperate for a solid puck possession forward in the ozone. I like Vilardi's size and work ethic.
  4. IMO the Twins should waive their NMC's and the Canucks should protect Gaunce and Sbisa. Vegas won't take one Sedin. The Twins could publicly say they would retire if broken up and that would kill any ideas Vegas might have. Leave Dorsett exposed and Vegas would take him instead.
  5. Gaunce will be a huge beneficiary of Green as Canuck coach. Gaunce with a year of NHL experience should come into the fall very prepared.
  6. You could very well be right. Skill wise he is close now my concern is almost all about his build. He has to get bigger. If it takes a year in the AHL I am not concerned.
  7. Hunter will round off Joulevi's game this winter. He will be a roster threat 2 seasons from now.
  8. Mittlestadt looks to much like Shinkaruk. Don't want him.
  9. If Horvat gets 1st Line TOI I would expect 60 minutes at a minimum. Much more actually.
  10. Did you notice who was on the ice at critical points in the games? That tells you who Hunter thinks is his best d-man.
  11. I am comfortable in knowing that Benning will not listen to the bafflegab and misinformation floating around the draft. He has his scouting reports and evaluations. It is always about assessing the personality and skills. I will be quite happy to see a deal for Tanev or Edler or Sbisa that brings back a top draft pick.
  12. All the Canucks had to do was watch the Anaheim - Oilers series to understand what level they have to achieve. Unfortunately they are not close at this point. You can play the fast and finesse game during the season but come CUP play opposing teams will do what they have to to beat you.
  13. For sure I don't want Demko rushed either. I write off Markstrom's numbers from Florida. His team sucked there for sure. In his 32 game stint 2 seasons ago he pitched a .915 % and .910% last year. When he played the 10 - 12 games straight with Miller out on injury he was outstanding. If you're concern whether he can handle 50 -60 games it must be his mental toughness to handle that many games. Physically there are many tenders who handle that work load. At 27 he has been around the game long enough. If Markstrom gets the nod I do not see a back up playing 40 games. Goal tending is the most over stocked position in the NHL. A Canuck backup should be looking at 20 - 25 games. Ideally we see a deal with Dallas and take some CAP with a tender to backup Markstrom along with their 1st Rounder for Tanev. Idle speculation can be fun!
  14. Very excited that both Green and Virtanen will be bumping into one another this summer in Vancouver. Green can continue his mentoring and keep Jake directed.
  15. I expect a lot of deals going down through the NHL as we move towards the ED and Draft. The idea of a Dallas deal where we take a tender back as backup makes sense. All about the details. Markstrom's stats are as good as Miller's IMHO.
  16. Truly unfortunate that Markstrom hurt his knee. If he had not there would be less discussion about his not being ready to be a #1. He is ready and the Canucks should be starting him on 50 - 60 games.
  17. Miller as a backup is not realistic. His season last year was solid and I suspect he gets offers better than what Van should be making. All that said the tender market in the NHL is very tough and younger, bigger tenders are showing very well. IMHO the only way Miller should be resigned is on a max 2 year deal with full knowledge he is the backup and Markstrom the starter. Neither would I have a NTC in that offer.
  18. Chatfield had a standout game. Standout tourney. My concern with his game is that it seems to focus on anticipating puck movement. The NHL will be faster and bigger so his pro transition will likely require adjustment. I did not see a lot of board battle or physical defending of the net front. His first pass and skating speed is excellent. At 190 pounds his size is not that bad. Can he beat out a Stecher? They play the same kind of game other than Stecher seems to be more physical.
  19. I might be a little anxious for a d-man trade to maximize value in lieu of losing a top 4 grade d-man to the ED. No doubt Benning is exploring all the options. IMHO many Canuck fans are forgetting how well the d-core was performing early in the season. The goals against were very competitive and the credit should not all go to the tenders. I am one of those who believe that a big physical d-core still stands as preferable over the course of a season and hopefully playoffs. If Hutton can play a solid physical game and retain his offensive speed and refine his ozone rushes he should be a keeper. I don't see him going anywhere until the TDL if at all. Funny that there is no speculation on Karl Alzner to date. Not much offense to his game but not sure f that is because other CAPITALS d-men are picked for that. Talk of Orlov returning to Russia is a pretty weak negotiating ploy IMO. Word was Alzner would be gone because the Caps preferred Orlov.
  20. May Nikita's cheques start bouncing by X-Mass. He will be back faster than we all realize.
  21. I believe Hutton weighed 185 pounds when he broke in. Last year he topped out at 210. That was a big adjustment. I am not so worried about a players ability to fight as I am his ability to move players from the net front and battle hard in the corners. I thought Hutton improved in these areas this past season. Also thought that his speed was still there after the weight he put on. Looking forward to his season next year.
  22. To bad Alex missed the final series. He was making a difference when he played. Sens needed that net front player.
  23. Hutton was a 2nd year pro on, as you pointed out, a young struggling team. What is positive is that he ended his season on a bit of a comeback. As Edler slowly declines, offensively, Hutton is the best offensive LD on the team. I expect a better season from him net year. Another point is Hutton's playing weight which increased over 20 pounds last year. I saw stronger puck battles and physicality from him as a result. It bodes well for him as his game develops.
  24. Any 1st year d-man in the NHL who complains about TOI of 16 minutes not being fair should give his head a shake. If this was the main reason for leaving then Van might have dodged a bullet in resigning this guy. As the KHL churns and 6 teams are folded I suspect Tryamkin will return with his tail between his legs. Benning will get him for a cheaper CAP than if he had stayed which is good for the Canucks. I am more inclined to give Tryamkin the benefit of the doubt and assume he left for family reasons. Either way cutting special deals for Russian players should not be high on priority lists for the Canucks. If they cannot or will not make an adjustment to the NHL rigors then they should be traded or cut. Tryamkin showed great potential but his actions threatened team chemistry, especially for the younger defense prospects.
