I think you are right. I am not too worried about Gaunce being picked up. More worried of losing a top 4 d-man unless Benning makes a deal of some kind. I prefer he ships a Dorsett to Vegas and retains some CAP as incentive to Vegas. Dorsett is a 'meat & potatoes' player who could help transition a Vegas team.

That has a lot to do with Joulevi's season. Unfortunately most All-star teams are based on offence. We will see how Joulevi does with next year's team with a more experienced group. They will be in the running for another Memorial Cup IMHO.

Because he is another chip to deal if necessary. He is at the upper end of the timeline but still has something to prove. If he does then he could bring back something to the org when the time is right. Canuck forward group is no where close to being big enough. Choices will have to be made as the group develops as to who has to be dealt.

2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017
Boudrias replied to hyper00's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
I still lean towards a big 1C option because puck possession starts in the FO circle. I do not disagree that the d-core also needs help but with Hank likely done after this season the Canucks have a huge need at center. It does come down to who is available at draft and that is why Benning gets the big bucks. I do expect the Canucks will draft top 5 next year as well and in a stronger draft year. -
The East Germans had their whole Olympic team on dope. The Russians doped their teams for at least the last 2 Olympics so it should be no surprise to find out that they were not doing so with their hockey team. That said so many of their players have stayed in NA since their retirements that you would think some one would have talked. I guess family in Russia might keep things quiet.

IMHO the argument for little or no AHL time for Boeser is his age. 3 seasons of top flight college play.
-
In Penticton, last fall, he kept catching my eye. NHL body and solid positional play. A decent point shot. He caught my eye more than Joulevi did and I am not being negative towards Joulevi in the comment. He could have been a bit more physical.
-
I agree. As mentioned above however, Boeser is older and his ability to adjust to the NHL will likely be advanced. If he does go to Utica I suspect a quick recall.

Hanson light was used as a comparable. When I watched Lockwood I was seeing Cassels light. In Penticton Cassels was playing a more physical game and Lockwood appears to be doing that already. At 175 pounds he might reach 185 and with his speed and ice smarts he could be a solid 3C.

I like the idea that JV will be training at the Canucks gym this summer. Green will be there regularly and he can keep coaching JV's development.

I thought Edler had a strong couple of games before Gudbranson was hurt. IMO his TOI should be in the 20 -22 minutes. This is where he is most effective.
-
Depends what you mean by 'plays big'? Physically we all know he is a specimen at 215 pounds. Playing big in my mind is at a minimum a Virtanen who can finish his checks and play a physical game that can maintain puck possession using his size. Not that concerned about ppg like so many CDC fans. I will be very happy if Jake can play a role similar to Zach Kassian in Edmonton. Yes, some offense but mostly a hitter who can PK.
-
If nothing else the current CUP playoffs should bring home the stark Canuck reality. They are no where close to being big enough. Virtanen has to work out even if as a bottom 6 player. Still confident that a kid with his size and speed can evolve his game to the NHL level.

You are probably sick of hearing me say it but the greatest legacy Gillis left the Canucks was a AHL franchise. Manitoba was good, Chicago Wolves a disaster. But as you said J.R. the org is developing depth and breadth which is something that has rarely happened in 47 years. With a development timeline of at least 3 years there is no reason to rush the youth in their development. IMHO there is more risk running a player in Vancouver than seasoning him in Utica. Canuck fans will have to be patient whether they like it or not.
-
Green has said he wants 4 lines rotating and player movement between Van and Utica. With all the youth coming into the org it makes total sense to bring prospects up for NHL exposure. Still waiting for the new coach name in Utica. There are a lot of positives to Green's Utica time.

IMHO it is not the question whether the Twins can put up 2nd line minutes or not. The question is how many vet forwards do you carry on the forward group? Depending on position what do those vets provide for the younger players as they develop their games. How much TOI do the vets take away from younger players? It is all a balancing act for Green to figure out. If he is true to his word he will role 4 lines and that by the numbers reduces the Twins ice time. 16 -18 minutes would be in the ballpark.
-
I don't see it. We all know that Green has never developed any AHL/NHL talent. Actually hoping McEneny and Subban get some NHL games this year.

First I heard of money like $4-5 mil. I was very disappointed when Tryamkin left but hold no grudge against him for whatever reason he left. He signed his deal with Van and had the right to leave, I believe. If it was family or money so be it. You have to have players who want to be a Canuck. If the deal is for 3 years I am curious if he has a NHL 'out' clause? Tryamkin might be surprised with current conditions in Russia even if it has only been 1 year. He now knows what NHL life is like and that might work on him.

If the extent of Boucher's thinking is that he would play better as a top 6 player then I do not think he gets it. Desjardin was not the first NHL coach or GM who have talked to him about being in shape. Boucher was a long shot to begin with. I hope he comes to TC in great shape. As weak as the Van forward group is I doubt he breaks the lineup.
-
Edler has always played a pretty physical game internationally. No idea what slows that game with the Canucks. He was trending more physical until Guddy was injured. Anyone watching the Oilers has to realize how much more physical and bigger the Canucks have to get.

Good points. My take on Joulevi's development is that in his 2 years in London he has had two very different teams to play on. 2 years ago London had high end offense and Joulevi played more of that game. This past year less offense so Hunter focused him into a more d-side role. IMHO this is a huge benefit for Joulevi's development. I agree with your point about Hunter's team approach but in essence is that not what it is all about. Hunter is maximizing Joulevi's abilities to benefit the Knights. It is no dif than what he will experience in the NHL. The Knight's young forwards gained a lot of experience this past season which should carry them into the Memorial Cup again next year. I am hoping Joulevi will be a part of that. It is not that I think he needs another Memorial Cup just that the process will refine his approach to the game and better prepare him for the NHL. Another year in London will let Joulevi fill out more. If nothing else the current Stanley Cup is showing how physicality is at a premium in CUP play. Building a competitive team for regular season is simply to get to playoffs. The Canuck time line gives Benning the option of being patient with OJ. The outcome might be that he can leave junior and move to the NHL without much AHL time.
-
Edler is show casing his talents at the Worlds. He usually does well on the big ice. Fans keep saying he won't waive but I remember a interview where he said he had never been asked to waive. How do you stay with a team that tells you they want to move in a different direction?
-
He got a strong start which was a concern considering his 2 previous seasons. Not as worried about his tailing off as his TOI edged higher and he got more 1st line type starts, ie ozone starts. He was drawing more top pairing "d" coverage. It is experience of what he will get more of. I did not think Horvat had top line wingers for most of the season. IMHO Baer still has question even with his solid season.

Is Cederholm coming back to NA? I was impressed with Chatfield's play in the 2 games I watched against London.

Are we so desperate that we count cross bars and goal posts? How about empty nets where the tender had lost position? How about set ups where the puck bounced over his blade or he shot wide? What I take some comfort from is that Gaunce plays a strong positional game. His 4th line role this year has to be considered a success for him. Mnay nights the 4th was the best Canuck line. Lots of ozone pressure. If you gauge Gaunce's prospects by his ppg then you will likely be pessimistic about his future. IMHO he had a decent season after 2 years in the AHL where in his last year he demonstrated an ability to put points up. He repeated that when sent down this season. That does not always mean the same in the NHL but I think his chances are better than any other options in Utica. What Gaunce has is decent skating, a very good wrist shot, great positional awareness and SIZE. The Canucks are brutally undersized in the forward group. Gaunce might not make it in Vancouver but the Canucks need his size until such time that he proves he will not cut it or until another prospect forces him out. I think he makes it.
