  1. As a UFA I love the concept. Is he playing injured? Seems to be spotted more than playing a regular shift. He has limited offense so maybe that is why.
  2. Not as upset about a forward developing in the KHL as I am with a defenseman. That said I prefer that all prospects play for Utica. The KHL does not play the NHL game, not even close.
  3. Wow, with that lineup they will never pry Green out of Uitca!
  4. Who will play the 40 games that Tanev is out on injury from?
  5. Totally agree with your Tanev and Edler comment. There is a good chance that the Canuck team next year will not be much better than the past one. Again, for me the up coming season is all about player & prospect development. Joulevi has played a lot of hockey over the past 2 seasons. Time away will help him.
  6. Perhaps pre-season will be a good enough exposure but I prefer some actual NHL games. Not sure why you are ruling it out. Trades and/or injuries?
  7. I prefer another year of OHL hockey than playing in the Finnish league. Joulevi just finished his 2nd year of Canadian hockey. In London he gets NHL quality coaching, coaching that knows what it takes for success in the NHL. The same coach who developed Bo Horvat. Hunter showed how much he valued Joulevi by how he played him in during the season and playoffs. Play Joulevi for his 9 games starting next year and then send him to London for experience and physical development. Not sexy like Euroland but it works.
  8. It was unfortunate that Utica did not have more depth and that the Canucks, as usual, had a raft of injuries. I agree with leaving prospects in the AHL for at least 2 years. and then start playing them for NHL development. By no stretch were the Canucks a playoff team and Utica players could have been rotated through Vancouver to give the players exposure to NHL play. Next year it should be a deeper wider pool of talent.
  9. Jake has the physical attributes to be a top 6 NHL player. I am sure that had a big part in why Benning drafted him. Was Benning fooled by Virtanen's pre-draft interview? Does Virtanen have character flaws that will prevent his maximizing his potential? Isn't that the essence of developing a player? Combining the physical with the mental approach to the game is what development is all about. To me that is what Benning & Co. did with Jake this past year. They realized his approach to the game had be changed and Green has worked on that through this past season. Worrying about whether Virtanen was drafted in the top 10 or not is a over weighted game. There are a huge number of players in the NHL who were high drafts and never achieved what many thought was their true potential. In my mind if Virtanen becomes a solid 3rd line, energy guy on a CUP winning team his draft position would have been a huge coup. Winning teams are built on a broader base than ppg.
  10. Interesting take on Granlund. Considering his brothers success in Minny I will reserve judgement. I like his game to date and actually think he had a stronger season than Baer. If I was worried about either one being out of the NHL in 3 years it might be Baer. I agree with your take on Gaunce. Vancouver is woefully undersized and losing him could be a set back. His attraction to Vegas could easily be a CAP one as McPhee takes CAP on in exchange for pprospects and picks. Gaunce could end up being a cheap option that fits in his cost structure. I doubt he is protected however. Because of the d-side of the Canuck situation (losing a top 4) I still hope that Benning has a deal cooking with Vegas to avoid significant loss.
  11. What I saw in Lockwood was a smaller Cassels. Maybe Lockwood was a bit more physical and a little faster. When I talk Cassels it was his Memorial Cup run.
  12. I expect the Canucks to draft #1!
  13. Virtanen, like most Canuck prospects, will be in camp this fall and will get pre-season games. Whoever the coach is will take it from there. Canucks are way to small and that is a opportunity for Virtanen. Would love to see him nail down a 3rd line roll. If Green is the coach it would be the best scenario for Virtanen as they will know one another and continue the process developed in Utica. All this said I will not be overly upset if Jake goes back to Utica if needed.
  14. Does Green bring Virtanen up or vice versa?
  15. Your roster has no where near the size of Columbus. I suspect at some point a choice will have to be made between Baer and Goldobin.
  16. I am hoping that Benning has a deal cooking with McPhee that protects the roster. Does Gaunce have an offensive upside? Many fans think he is a plug. A pretty disparaging tag for any hockey player who actually skates a NHL game. IMO we do not know what Gaunce's ppg upside is. What I do know is he has decent speed, nice size and can play a nice physical game. His play on the 4th line this season had that line dominating on the boards in the ozone in lots of games. Both Granny and Baer had many more NHL games under their belts to draw from. Comparing them with Gaunce is not particularly worthwhile. Back to size. Gaunce has it, the Canucks as a team do not. Watching the Oilers-Sharks game last night should turn some light bulbs on for fans. The Oilers have size and use it pretty effectively. To be competitive the Canucks have to get a lot bigger. Is there room for Granny and Baer? Big centers with a few smaller wingers might work.
  17. Lockwood was on both the PP and PK. I saw him play only 1 game. For what it was worth he played a very strong position game with an edge on physicality. Reads the play well.
  18. His coach Red Beresen retired yesterday. He was very high on Lockwood.
  19. I have been on record as not wanting Miller resigned simply because I thought Markstrom should be the #1. That said I was impressed with Miller's exit news presser. Obvious that he is a thinker and a real team player.
  20. So you are say'n there is a chance. I thought Garteig should have gone to Van and Bachman sent to Utica. He could have split that 3 game weekend and the way he has been playing even stolen a game. To me the top priority for the org was #1 getting the 2nd Pick and then the Comets making playoffs. Sending Bachman to Utica worked well for both objectives.
  21. The 1040 Boys were irate during the Player year end pressor, Edler was apparently checking his phone regularly. I still hope that Benning has a deal worked out to protect his top 4 d-men. Edler, Tanev, Guddy, Sbisa are all available. If Edler is kept I hope his TOI is cut to 20 - 22 TOI. Less ice and a more defensive stance and he can likely play a 4D or 5D role on this club for another 3 years. Failing a deal with Vegas I would leave Edler exposed.
  22. Alaska is broke. Does this mean he has to buy his own ticket? So so year but I liked his play during the Penticton Prospects tourney.
  23. Burrows for sure. I always said that he helped the Twins more than vice versa. The off season rethink of how the Twins play the game has to be considered. Danny still has a big league shot if he would use it. I would give serious thought to splitting the Twins up at times so that Danny was put in apposition where he had to shot more. Hank has shown in the past that he can dish the puck well without having to have his brother.
  24. Baer had a pretty decent year other than some injuries. A lot more confidence and a lot more physical. It gets him into scoring positions. All that said I still don't know where he will fit long term. On a CUP contender I suspect a 3LW but has potential of a 2LW. His long term challenge is likely not his scoring ability but a physical one.
