You make a good point about the level of awareness that young players have today. When I made the point about Desjardin sheltering players as part of their development I would add that I do not think that he does much that is not discussed within the org either with Benning or his assistant coaches. I do think it is a collegial approach. IMHO it starts with Linden/Benning and extends down. Many of us on here have talked about a rebuilding process that would optimistically take 4 - 5 years. The reality will likely be longer. That is hard for any org to push through. Fans, who ultimately pay the bills, often cannot see or do not have the patience for the time needed. For me the ultimate betrayal is an org that takes short cuts and brings a team back to quickly and marginalizes the ultimate product. I thought Linden's radio response about Desjardin was bang on. He is the obvious choice to finger for responsibility and would be the likely guy to leave if progress stalls. From where the group started I have not seen a stall yet. Steady progress is my view. Linden says they review options at season's end and again I think that happens. They could easily decide to change coaches because a better option exists for where the team now sits. I trust them to make that judgment.

Typical of a rookie to be off that half second. How many posts and crossbars this season? I am concerned about Vegas scouting.

Would you give any credit to the idea that Gaunce has now played a solid base of games on the 4th line and can now be moved up to a experience some 3rd line play? I would agree that Megna was always a long shot but he has played a number of games as a top 6. His speed and skill level with a nice level of defensive awareness has made that possible. He had a chance but at the end of the day he has to score to stay in the NHL. He will not stay in the NHL as a 4th liner and will be gone after this season. IMHO this season was all about development and evaluation. Megna was never in the long term plans unless he surprised. The successes of this year are many. The steady and careful development of Gaunce is one. Another that many fans laugh at is Chaput. He might hang in as a 4th line center.

For sure Green appears to have had a lot to do with Baer re-emerging. I credit WD for continuing the effort. My take on Desjardin is that he sees a team approach as he evolves the group forward. If anything I think he is cautious with the developing talent and shelter their exposure. The Canuck problem has been depth and as a result some of the talent has been pushed hard and put at risk. There is an emotional read on players that coaches have to make which does not always jive with their physical and skill level. Fans have almost no insight into that side of the game. Desjardin is a favorite whipping boy for many on here but my simple take is that this team has never quit on him and obviously respect his input. If the Canucks were acting like a retirement clubhouse I might be more concerned. This roster is still being formed and developed and if a different coach is eventually needed, it likely will, then I think Benning and Linden have enough smarts to know when the right time is. Many here suggest Desjardin has no skill developing youth yet was a successful WHL coach and a successful AHL coach. I think his record is solid. All this aside there is always room for personality conflict which can force change but I have seen none of that.

A lot of reasons why 2nd year players struggle. I would add to your list that Hutton added 20 pounds onto his frame. IMHO it is helping him in puck battles. I am confident that by his 4th season fans will be very happy in his development. What he did in year 1 was not the norm.

Is this the same Baer who Desjardin developed so poorly? Just want to be clear. As you suggest the game is still over 200'.

After his first goal it will be the Goblinator.

Using blankets to spread disease is not unique to NA. It has been used throughout history.

It would be tough to see Burrows in another uniform but if it gave him a crack at a CUP I would cheer him on. Few players in the history of this org have done more to bring a winner to Vancouver. His desire to win is surpassed by no other. His ability to make big plays and score big goals when needed is legendary. When he first came up from the Moose the Canucks were a pretty docile bunch who had become accepting of defeat. Burrows and Kesler took a lot of flack over their approach to the game but I suggest it was absolutely needed. The history of the Canucks will give the Sedins most of the credit for 2011 but I would put crunch players like Bieksa, Kesler and BURROWS right up there.

I have not seen him play a lot but caught a full game awhile ago. He was 1st PP and a regular PK'er. He tended to play high in the ozone and pick his spots to come into the boards for a hit or a puck battle. His game was consistently physical. Regularly won puck battles and set up 2 goals and scored one himself. Berensen obviously likes this kid a lot.

Because of the roster timeline and the need for forward assets Tanev has to be moved. If exposing Edler to Vegas generates a trade then that works as well. Canucks cannot lose one of their top d-men for nothing.
-
Benning has to trade Miller now! He is playing great hockey. As a pending UFA he will demand at least a 3 year term and market rate for a #1 tender. Vancouver cannot use Miller for another 3 years. Time to get something back before he moves on.
-
IMO you are describing what the Canucks will face in serious CUP play. It will come down to how many lighter d-men can be on the roster. It certainly appears that Stecher will be a big part of the future but the players capable of heavy play have to be there as well.

How many Florida draftees have been thrown into that meat grinder over the years. Gudbranson is similar to Sbisa as they both broke in at 18 and had some crash course learning to do. If Benning and Linden saw enough to want Guddy then I am willing to wait more than 35 games to pass judgement.
-
You're probably right but it will be tough to see Hansen go. I thought he was an ideal transition vet for the young players to learn from. While I always assumed that Burrows would likely be gone I also had to pick protecting Sutter over Hansen as well.
-
Totally agree. 35 games +/- is no where near enough games to make any judgement. You're bang on about opposing teams being more physical with Guddy out. Our record dealing with Florida has not been exactly stellar. That said there were simply to many good hockey people back east, outside of Florisa, who were dismayed that Guddy was moved. IMHO a big, physical, d-core has to be the base for the Canucks to build from as a serious CUP contender.

They don't call the media Pressitutes for no reason.

Last night was classic Burrows. Have loved this guy since he first made the Moose. He has been unfairly regulated as solely an agitator, although a big part of his game. His desire to win trumps all else. IMHO his play benefited the Twins more than vice versa. Burrows has had a great road trip after being in a scoring funk for 3 weeks. His recent success should not cloud the reality that Alex Burrows time is ending. If he can be moved for a draft pick it has to happen. As a UFA if he wants to return it would have to be a serious option. Burrows will not get a CUP shot with Van if he can get one with the Habs I wish him well and cheer him on. I rank Alex Burrows up there with Stan Smyl as far as impact on the franchise.

I found the conversation about his brother Michael, in Minnie, during that recent game interesting. At 24 his game took off and he is now 16th in NHL scoring. At 23 I do not think we have seen Marcus Granland's upside. He has a deadly accurate shot. When looking at many of the Canuck players I always consider how slow the overall team speed is. Horvat, Hansen, Megna and Skille have speed. Bring in younger, bigger and faster players and how well to the existing player's games improve. I suggest Granland would benefit in a big way.
-
I am for a Tanev trade because he does not have a NTC, has value, lacks offense and I question how well he can stand heavy physical play. The Canuck team development timeline is such that the young d-core can gain experience while the forward group is acquired. It comes down to choices. Edler, Tanev, Guddy and Sbisa are all draft eligble. One has to be moved. Edler at 20 - 22 TOI is still an option for another 3 seasons. This is not without risk but I doubt Edler waives on a trade. He could be threatened with exposure to Vegas but I don't think Benning would do that. Many fans suggest Edler be traded. I don't like that option because he likely does not bring back as much in return. Some fans fear that Sbisa's season is a one off. IMHO Sbisa gained traction last year and has continued is move upward. He leads the d-core with a +9. His offense still has unrealized potential and it is superior to Tanev's.

To clarify my point about Larsson was his apparent difficulty transitioning from KHL play to the NHL. I was not comparing Joulevi to him. Joulevi will be a young 19 year old next year. It will be his 3rd OHL season. To date he has played about 100 games in the OHL. I don't consider that a lot of experience. I prefer he plays in NA under closer observation by the Canucks. He regularly plays with and against players he will see at the NHL level.
-
Many fans have short timelines and as you said exaggerated expectations. Using Utica and showing patience can maximize talent whatever that ends up being.
-
I am hoping that Benning makes a deal with Vegas on a player so that whoever is chosen is one that the team can afford to lose.
-
Last thing I want to see is Joulevi back in Euroland. They let Jensen go because he was 'to good' for the OHL. IMHO he likely sank his career. Keep him in London playing for one of the best orgs in the CHL. NHL size ice with quality coaching. What I have read about the KHL is not that positive. Very little contact and predominantly offensive in nature. That is not the NHL, not even close. Larsson was a KHL All-Star. By the way travel in the KHL is brutal.
-
IMHO the dif today is that the Canucks have some time in their development time line that would cushion young prospects. Sending Gaunce back to Utica was a sign of this as management is clearly doing the best practices for developing long term success. That is not the history of this org. Utica will have an influx of young talent next year with a very experienced coaching group even if Green leaves. If Boeser needs time in the AHL I am sure he will get it. When Gillis spearheaded the AHL franchise purchase it was a game changer for the organization. Consistent structure from the minors to the NHL. All that has been missing is a deeper talent pool which is changing.
