I move Miller to maximize on his great play this year. Markstrom is ready to be a #1. As a UFA he is going to sign for market and duration. I would be surprise if he didn't get a 3 year deal. It comes down to asset management. He should return a 2nd Rounder.
-
Cannot wait until next year for this kid to show is ozone presence.
-
My issue with resigning Miller is that his value is not realized at the TDL. As a UFA I am sure he will look for a 3 year deal at the going rate for a top goal tender. Canucks are rebuilding and prospects he might bring back are needed during the transition. A good backup for Markstrom can be had and Demko can be spotted in year 2.
-
Totally agree. If the Canucks did not invest in Gaunce's TOI then who? He has shown enough this year that he has upside. The 4th line is doing exactly what has been asked of them. Anyone notice how many shifts they are getting at critical moments in games. WD had them closing out periods and games more and more. Gaunce will be an NHLer and even Chaput might make it with the experience they have gotten this year.
-
Fair enough. I watched McEneny at the Prospects tourney in Penticton. He obviously had an NHL body. Played a pretty conservative game. I liked his positioning. Couple of point shots that were impressive.
-
I would be stunned to find out that Benning would have any consideration as to who drafted a player. Also highly doubt that Canuck management is not following the play of their prospects in Utica closely. Canucks are in a rebuild and that is all about prospect development.
-
His setup on a Chaput shot was excellent. Great save. What impressed me was how the 4th bent from a fast Hawks team but did not break. We have gotten use to them playing in the ozone most night but last night the Hawks did pin them in the d-zone for some shifts. IMHO Gaunce is having a solid first season in the NHL. He has a decent shot but more impressive is his ability to pass the puck under pressure. Very happy he has not been sent back to Utica. Hopefully he will be a role model for Virtanen.
-
Hawks are a very fast team and I thought they pressured the Van d-core hard. Biega had a tough game. I like his speed and for his size he battles hard. When I talk about a tough game I am talking about his ability to move the puck effectively when pressured. He turned the puck a number of times. Contrast that with Stecher who handles the puck in tight situations and moves the puck effectively. As a #7 there is nothing wrong with Biega.
-
His ability to move the puck in the d-zone stands out. He made some moves in the Hawks game that were outstanding. He rarely misses a breakout pass.

I think they can only protect 3 d-men no matter what. Bottom line is that Van will only lose one player off their unprotected list. Quite honestly of Tanev, Edler, Gudbranson or Sbisa I do not see a forward who would be a better value pick other than Hansen. Your right that other d-men might be picked over these 4 but when a value pick has to be made it still might be one of them as they could be traded once again by Vegas.

Compelling stats. My observation is that there are so many varibles at work a accurate evaluation is tough. I am one of those who has called for trading Tanev by the TDL. He is an option because he has no NTC, his injury history, his size, his durability during CUP play, and his lack of offense. Does Van have enough talent in their d-core group to improve and replace what Tanev is offering today? Serious CUP play is likely 3 years away. What can Tanev bring back in a trade that compliments the long term objective of a CUP? I suggest that it would be a significant return. Bottom line is that Van has to trade one of Tanev, Edler, Gudbranson or Sbisa. Doing less means losing one for NOTHING. My pick of the 4 is still Tanev.

Miller is healthy and playing well. The play to make is dealing him to Dallas. Marky can step in as the #1.
-
Exactly! When the time comes that he goes to the net from whatever angle there will be kaos. It likely won't matter whether he actually scores because his team mates will have open season on loose pucks. Can't you just see a "Flying V" coming down the ice with Tryamkin leading.
-
MY 'new' comment would be that Jake was selected to the WJC two times. Those selecting were not in the Canuck world. Their evaluation saw something that prompted their choice. I am one of those quite happy to see Jake in Utica and quite happy to see Travis Green working with him. He has a coach who had along NHL career and very interestingly two other coaches in Nolan Baumgartner and Jason King who had NHL chances but could not stick. Just imagine the conversations they are having with Jake Virtanen while reviewing video.
-
I doubt management had high expectations that Virtanen would be back in Vancouver this season. The flack this kid was taking as a 19 year old last year was embarrassing as a Canuck fan. At 20 he is with a good coach in the AHL. This is a coach who had a long NHL career and has demonstrated an ability to build players. I am sure Green has broke Jake's remaining season into 10 game segments with skills targets. Set achievable targets and rebuild confidence along with NHL skills. Jake is where he should be.
-
Benning should trade Miller only if the returning value is there. 2nd Rounder or higher. He is playing so well that I expect his new contract will target a 3 year deal and that is to much for Van. It is the old story with the Canucks that a quality vet walks as a UFA for no return. IMHO Van cannot allow that. I would also argue that Markstrom is ready to be a #1 and considering the team development timeline it is Markstrom's spot.
-
You have outlined legit core concerns. I watched Virtanen playing for the Hitman and admit I was surprised to see him on a 2nd line. His play was not that different than how he was playing with the Canucks. IMHO there is time for Green to rebuild this kids game into something that works in the NHL. My take away on JV is that he has superior skating and a wicked wrist shot. I'll wait to see how he develops in Utica.

Positionally I see Gaunce playing a strong game. Strong fore check and strong defense is what is expected from a 4th line and IMO Gaunce-Chaput-Skille deliver this. If the gauge being use by fans is the ppg then they will be disappointed. I am not worried about his point production my only wish would be a touch more physicality. Gaunce is the type of player who could surprise if played on a 3rd line. Desjardin's allocation of TOI has steadily increased for the 4th line and is a valid move. The NJD game had ideal allocation IMHO.

Thanks for the link, Hairy! Many fans are most excited by Stecher's game and fair enough. IMHO Tryamkin has a bigger overall upside than Stecher has. Needless to say the arrival of these two has transformed the Canuck backend. It likely allows Benning to trade either Tanev or Edler within the next year. Hopefully Tanev by the TDL but I doubt it. What we are now seeing from Tryamkin are glimpse of his offensive upside. He is moving the puck up ice more often and cover 200' very quickly when he winds up. One has to wonder what happens when he starts going to the net more aggressively. He will be fun to watch for years!
-
Hmm... Played for the Hitman as well. Won a CUP with the Hawks. Sounds good. I see Virtanen as a solid 3rd liner if Green can reground his game into a solid defender with a physical side. Jake's much vaunted physical game is not a regular part of his play from what I can see. Some have questioned his shoulder and I am doing the same. He has great speed and if his defensive game is solid he could be a real threat off his wing. I have complete confidence that Green can coach him in this direction.

Actually the epic fail will be not moving the Twins, Burrows, Miller and Tanev.
-
Sad to read. Rodin could possibly be seeing his career ebb away. I rather he be put on LTIR for the rest of the season than risk what opportunity he has left. One has to question whether he was given a premature OK last fall to play.
-
Makes a dif who their line mates are as well. When I watch that Columbus team it makes me pause that's all.
-
Many fans on here have penciled Rodin into a top 6 role. I don't see it but he has to have more ice. If his knee is not at top form then we might never see it until next year. I highly doubt he would be claimed as either Baer or Granlund will be exposed and they would go first. I criticize other fans for not being patient enough for Benning to do his job but my outside the box TDL dealings would be moving Tanev, Miller and the Twins. Entertain offers on either Burrows or Hanson. Obviously Hanson is worth more but it is about the quality of the deal offered. I like keeping both of them for the transition. Deal Burrows and he comes back next fall.
-
Unfortunately what I am seeing more is the length of time it takes for the Twins to regain lost position or possession. The difference in speed between the 1st & 2nd PP units is very noticeable. I am more and more leery of their d-zone play. The idea they would be facing off in their own zone with 1:30 left in a tie game is scary. You mentioned third liners and I question how that will work? Last night they had TOI of 20 minutes. WD has had them at 18 minutes which is where I think they are most effective. Edler was at 29 minutes which is way to much IMO. He had Tryamkin cut way back which made me wonder about his heath. I like Edler at 22 minutes.
