Where have you been? When Van and Buffalo came into the league who drafted first was determined by spinning a roulette wheel.I cannot remember for sure but must have been Clarence Campbell who read the ball wrong and announced Vancouver had won and would pick first. Perrault was the consensus 1st Pick but before Van could act the correction was made and Buffalo picked him. Vancouver picked Dale Tallon. So it was established early that Vancouver would be 'skinned' on a regular basis by those bastards back east. The Canucks were a pretty good club in their first year and Tallon was a talent. As per usual I thought if he was brought along slower it would have made his career more productive. #7 Andre Boudrias!!!

For every Briere and St.Louis there are thousands of smaller players who never see a pro game. While Ican hope that Schroeder is successful the odds are definitely against him. One might even suggest that drafting Schroeder was a gamble that the Canucks did not have enough depth to make. As a 1st Round pick Van had to consider his residual trade value if he could not crack the Canuck lineup. I would suggest that the value of a smaller player like him would drop farther than a bigger player would. I am always impressed by Schroeder's drive and desire to make the NHL. He started last season trying to play Tort's style and it cost him an injury. IMO he has to play more to his strengths, handling the puck, skating and passing. Hopefully he will be put with linemates who can compliment those strengths.

Who knows what Garrison is thinking. He might miss the warm weather. What blows me away is how many fans think Van is one player away from being a 'contender'. They are quite willing too trade roster players and picks for a #1 pick like Reinhart. At some point fans have to realize that Van's major problem is lack of depth on the current roster and lack of depth in prospects.

Loved Mitchell's story. Willie cannot win enough CUPs IMO. Tikkanen was a classic character. My son's bantam team was in Van for Provincials and Rick Ley got us into a Canuck practice. All the boys are sitting in the stands at the blue line. Tikkanen fired 3 wristers from the blue line and put all 3 off the cross bar! Before each shot he looked at the kids and smiled only the way he could smile! All the way back to the hotel all our kids could do is debate whether he did that on purpose or not. Rick Ley was nice enough to let the kids into that practice but I was disappointed that not many Canucks went out of their way to acknowledge the kids. Tikkanen, Tim Hunter and Corey Hirsh were outstanding. -

Have you ever heard the Laffers consider any of their players anything less than in the top 10 in theirposition? Reminds me of last fall when they were booking their parade after 10 games. Kadri is no where near even Kane light. Sat by Carlyle duing a playoff race and then sat again by Team Canada, does that tell you anything? -

At the WJ it was Horvat centering Reinhart. I really liked the way they were playing off one another. It appeared to me that Reinhart was QB'ing off the half boards a lot. -

The last thing we need in summertime CDC is a realistic attitude! If you want reality go to the Marleauand Thorton thread for serious thought provoking trade proposals. -

I would suggest that Edler's game was in trouble before Torts. Torts was talking about turning Edler'sgame around when he was hired. Edler has had 3 NHL coaches; Crawford, AV and Torts. I suggest that his development was rushed because of a very weak Vancouver roster in 2006. No where near enough AHL time. Fair or not I then blame the defensive coach, Bowness, for letting him flounder as his confidence went south. As you suggest Edler is young enough that he fits into a Canuck rebuild where some of the older dmen like Bieksa do not. He has a capability most hockey people would have a hard time giving up on. In some ways we might be disappointed in Linden if he did. If a top 4 dman is moved I suspect Bieksa or Garrison. The issue IMHO is Vancouver forward depth that could use what a trade would return but also the issue of how well Tanev has developed. Stanton is also part of that equation. He does not get enough consideration. He had a great rookie season. His ppg before injury was in the top rookie mix for dmen. Both Tanev and Stanton can handle more minutes. It becomes an issue of CAP, keeping 5 dmen who can play top 4. -

While I do not think there is anyone that is untouchable on any hockey team Tanev is an interestingplayer. I thought he might have peaked last year and yet he continued to improve this past season. How could Van consider moving him not knowing where he could peak out. His development history is one of overachieving, overcoming his size and showing a real desire to make the NHL. He does have to put on more weight. No doubt in my mind that opposing teams were playing a real physical game against him. A little meanness to his game would help as well. Stanton: Another d-man who we have no real idea of how far he can go. Moves the puck well and I would argue finds the net with his shot better than Tanev does. Like Tanev I wish he had more size. As much as Torts probably did not want to play him as much as he did he was forced to increase his TOI because of his play. In years to come the Gillis legacy on the current roster will be Kassian, Tanev and Stanton. -

2 years ago Stevie Y picks Burrows for his team. This year Rob Blake picks Burrows for his team. Top quality hockey people! At some point Burrows will extend his career by dropping off the #1 line back to a 3rd or 4th line checking PK specialist. That is more than what it appears the Twins will be able to do. -

I was struck by your WCE comments. I would point out that the only return that line gave us was Lu inthe Bertuzzi trade. Naslund and Mo both walked as UFA's. That is absolutely brutal for any org to deal with. It is a unfortunate reality with the Canucks as you can name many others, Ohlund, Salo, JoVo, Torres, Raymond... Who am I missing? I guess I can add Roy, Lapierre and Manny as well. I appreciate special circumstances with some of those examples. Net, net a lot of assets gone for no return. Combine this with the number of 2nd and 3rd rounders who have been moved for 'that' piece that would take us to a CUP. I suggest asset management has been on par with Canuck drafting for many years. Bad and bad! As a result when I look at this roster I fear the a repeat of this Canuck history. Burke/Nonis were seriously bad and Gillis not much better. IMHO building a org that is paper thin in depth is a or should be a non starter. Once again Van has a opportunity to convert older vets into prospects and draft picks. Fail this time and Van will be another Calgary/Edmonton. Instead of the option of rebuilding on the go the alternative will be drafting #1 for years because the team will not survive an NHL season. Both Calgary and Edmonton fans can look up and see CUP banners which is more than Canuck fans can. -
Tambellini had a pretty decent slapper coming down the right side.

[Report] Canucks wont ask Alex Edler to waive NTC
Boudrias replied to AriGold's topic in Canucks Talk
As you suggest Linden might think highly of Edler but I doubt that prevents the same assessment by theentire management group that all players will be under. If other teams have approached Vancouver about a deal for Edler it has to be considered. Two coaches, AV and Torts, have struggled with Edler's performance. It does make a dif who the new coach is but it will come down to a Linden/Benning decision. One scenario might be a new coach and a review of Edler's performance up to the trade deadline next March. The risk is that Edler continues to perform poorly and his trade value drops. I cannot see Van moving Edler for less than 2 1st rounders or a prospect and a 1st rounder. His contract is very appealing and with a dif roster he could re-establish himself. It would be a very difficult decision in any event to move Edler. His age gives management time to reground his game. As much as I hate to say it if a top 4 was to be moved it makes more sense that a Bieksa go. As always it is all about what is offered in return. -

I think you are band on. Early in the season the forward puck support in the d-zone was very good. Asthe team got more desperate it started to break down. I won't go into big detail about how poorly I think Edler's development has been handled. I am curious about his emotional approach to the game as well. Physically he has all the attributes for great success. Because of previous success did he view himself as one who had to led the team from the backend? I appreciate that most players feel that but in Edler's case how did it break his game down? Can the right coach reground his game? If the conclusion is that one of the top 4 dmen have to be traded then it comes down to Edler, Bieksa and Garrison. CAP wise they all cost basically the same. I consider Edler the biggest gamble as his game is in tatters but his age is an advantage. Bieksa is a big play leader and would be in huge demand. His age suggests that he would be the prime trade candidate. Garrison would be in demand but his value does not equal the other two. Again, the caveat is always about what comes back and what Benning is trying to achieve. -
There were a lot of games last year where Santorelli outplayed Kesler at the C position. That said he also did well at wing. Like the Twins and Kesler I thought Torts overplayed him. If Kesler is tradedthen the whole question is opened up. Who takes the 2C?

For sure Benning will not denigrate his roster at almost anytime. Very wrong to look at players in a singular way it is always about how they compliment the team. If you want to equate Burrows performancelast year as the standard for what can be expected going forward then I think you are wrong. Does that mean he should not be traded, IMO no. Will other teams see value, yes. Not one player on this roster should have a secure position. Any player is tradeable because the object is all about winning a CUP, everything else is failure. I anticipate the draft day as it will be a huge indicator of where Benning thinks this team is. If he moves Kesler then I see a major shift towards youth. It would be the right thing to do. I am not one of those who think this org is a couple of pieces away from CUP contention. Canucks have had 3 years to build a 2nd line around Kesler and have failed. Time to move on. The next crisis to face the Canucks will be finding out whether the fan base are real hockey fans or whether the Canuck craze over the past decade has been a fad. A big city with no other major sport other than hockey. I suspect a huge portion of the fan base are people making the scene. A Canuck rebuild that could take 3 - 5 years is not something they might want to endure. A serious rebuild is something this org has never done. IMHO Van has a ideal situation to do it quickly now as many vets could be moved for picks and prospects. -
True enough. I guess we will see how LA approaches things starting tonight. I fully expect a very physical game against the Rangers.

With the Canuck advance man busy pumping tires in Florida I can see some Vancouver vets headed that way. As the Canucks ramp up for draft day I do not expect Linden to come out and say anything less than what he did about Edler. Edler did not have just one bad season. He does have all the tools to be a #1D on most NHL teams but that doesn't mean he will. He has his own challenges as a player but it also makes a dif who his coach is and who he plays with. I still consider Edler a player from the Nonis era when some players like Edler and Raymond were rushed to the NHL without sufficient AHL experience. Top Edler's situation with coaching that rode him into the ground. Edler player 25 - 27 TOI when he was floundering was unacceptable. When you look at the TOI for the LA Kings as they head to the CUP finals you can quickly see that this is a very balanced roster. Depth! I cut both AV and Torts some slack as they tried to win with no depth. Does Linden and Benning think this club is a 'couple' of pieces away from serious CUP contention? I am hoping that as wise hockey people they do not. I am hoping that they do not tune into the CDC summer chatter. No matter what is said in public any possible player move is always measured by what the needs and what has to be given up to get it. IMHO Van has a golden opportunity to move some vets to gain the org depth that it has rarely had in 45 years. Many of these vets have CUP final experience and are attractive pieces for CUP challenging teams. Van's opportunity does not come along that often. Failing to take advantage would be a serious step backwards. IMHO this roster is a far way from serious CUP contention. If new management continues the decades old practice of patching the roster to maximize the existing vets then nothing will change. Benning has a rep (deserved or not) that he will make moves for long term success. Combine that with his ability to appraise players and I expect deals to be made. If Kesler is a fence sitter then his movement could trigger even more movement towards a younger roster. Next season will be a transition period for the Canuck org. Whether Benning makes big moves prior to or during the draft or prior to the March trade deadline depends on his assessment. I assume the Van org is viewed as wounded and other teams will be circling to pick off usefull pieces. As always no player should be considered safe in this process. They all have +/- and it is always about what comes back. -

The steady stream of CUP final media was talking about AV's coaching style. Interesting comment about AVstarting the TWINS at 64% in the ozone FO's. Talked about AV playing to their strengths of puck possession in the attacking zone. It reminded me of Gillis's claim that they pimped CoHo for trade by doing the same thing to make him look good. -
We might find out whether you are right about that this fall. There are enough rosters with youth that he could be moved back and forth to the AHL that they could take a flyer on Schroeder to see if there is a fit. A CUP final with 2 very big teams. A sign of the NHL future. I suspect that Cherry was bang on the other night when he suggested there would be even fewer little guys in the future NHL. When one considers that the NFL and NBA are a big man's game why should the NHL be different?

I watched Tort's 'system' with interest as last season started. As you said the 2-1-2 was standard, in fact at times he brought a 3rd forward into the ozone puck battles. Even before things started to fallapart the aggressive forecheck was being abandoned. Am I wrong or did I see more 1-2-2 towards the last third of the season? Who knows what the thinking was. Injuries probably had a lot to do with it. I never really recovered from the overplay of Kesler and the Twins.
