I thought Stillman had a decent 1st half. Made a couple of solid hits. He struggles with net front pressure. Loses body position. Both he and Meyers were chasing puck carriers inside the d-zone as far out as the blue line. They have to be coached to do that. I am assuming the forward is supposed to back them up.

Hash Coin debacle from Estonia hits the news again. A bitcoin ponzi scheme valued at $575 million is broken up and principals arrested. Hmm? Maybe Charlie Munger was right after all.

Well good luck to them on that. IMHO the problem is not just Putin. He is simply the head of a very corrupt communist system that has stayed in power for +100 years by exploiting their own countrymen. The top down exploitation has been ingrained into the Russian persona. I honestly think there are lots of Putins scheming their ascendency to power. Real change likely won't happen without a civil war and a period of anarchy. The scary part is who will control the Russian nukes?

[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
Boudrias replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I think you nailed it. Doing the tear down now is critical if you want EP40, Hughes and Demko to be the core to build around. It brings an influx of youth to the team that should show enough promise that the core wants to stay. It realigns the timeline so that the CAP regains flexibility. Many fans will have a fit but I see no other route to serious CUP contention. Canucks need at least 3 top 4 dmen and have only 1. If a serious rebuild is undertaken it will place real pressure on Rutherford's revamped scouting department to produce the talent thru the draft and thru possible trades. -
Hogs will find his groove. More important that he works on his d-game than offense. Canuck history of developing their talent is not good. Big Mac is playing regularly with Philly and has a 0.4 ppg average. TOI averages about 14. He plays the physical game that the Canuck roster has always needed.

At the end of the year fans won't ask how many of Boeser's goals bounced in off his backside or whatever other part of his body. He is going to the net and that counts for something. My hope is that lots of pucks bounce off him and that he can be traded for d-side help. -
Isn't one of the prime rationales behind crypto a method of 'hiding' who owns what? I agree that government will want to create some monitoring system so as to tax it if nothing else. What 5 exchanges failed? I don't get excited about crypto in any form but do believe than bloc chain technology is the future. It will be very interesting to see how much of this is recovered. It isn't a half trillion $'s. That figure was the amount transacted through their platform year to date. I don't know the amount of assets they were holding. Not the same topic but I have read stories that suggest that as much as $1.5 trillion circulates around the world in short term money looking for returns. This amount of money is given as a partial reason for the increase in stock market volatility. When the S&P swings 5% in a single trading day on large volumes it is unheard of. Who owns this $1.5 trillion? Any combination of governments, organized crime, wealthy individuals or organizations, hedge funds... Some financial people are saying that AI trading is using this money more and more. My point in all this is what happens if there is a crisis of confidence in markets or geopolitically and this money is pulled? Would it cause a crisis circa 2008?

I guess in my convoluted way I was suggesting it was the patrons going to BC Place who were the recipients of a massive ongoing subsidy. As I said most people or groups of people play society for whatever benefit they can get. Does BC place provide a real social need? I suggest not. BC Place is part of the mosaic of a city which has such venues to advertise itself. Millionaires and billionaires and politicians and unions and blah, blah all have their hand in the rice bowl.
-
Many segments of society use 'blackmail' to get what they want. I am sure some billionaires and even millionaires do as well. I believe the taxpayer built BC Place in 1983 for $123 million which included no land cost. In 2008 $564 million was spent on a renovation. Revenue last year was $48.7 million. Of that the BC Lions paid $1.3 million. That team is owned by a billionaire, Doman. I suggest the Lions don't make money and obviously BC Place, owned by the public, don't make near enough to actually pay for itself. Who is actually receiving the handouts in this example?
-
I guess my bad effort to bring some humor to this topic. If the value of his holding was $200,000 at market then he might be able to claim a tax loss. If that wasn't the case then losing $10,000 at actual cost would possibly hurt less than losing $200,000.
-
For tax purposes the time at loss. To mitigate the depression the investment value.

Sorry about the duplication. It is my understanding that it would be counted 10X. Each movement is a transaction. The article was written by Liz Ann Sonders of Charles Swab & Company. She frequently appears on Wall Street Week. $8.19 trillion sounds like a lot but if you consider the trading volume of S&P it is not. I think another reason regulators aren't in a panic is that the ownership base is so narrow. While they will certainly investigate this 'theft' it will not threaten the financial system. Many people will lose a lot of money however.

Are vaccination levels high enough and effective enough that isolation isn't required? Such an announcement last fall would have brought a howl in public condemnation. Now it is crickets. I still where a mask in high public locations like the grocery store. Better safer than sorry? My daughter tells us that kids with Covid are now allowed in the school. Their family is vaccinated but she still got a case of Covid that she is just recovering from.

Vegas should have beat the Oilers. Oiler tender won it for them no matter how sweet McDavid's move was. If Boudreau puts Burroughs in the Nuckers win 4-3. -
Tank Hard for Bedard - Playoff chances are already Slim
Boudrias replied to Provost's topic in Canucks Talk
How about ARZ tanks for the Bedard pick and then trades to the Laffers. But all the Laffers get is the #1 pick and they lose their position to the Canucks who are #5. Canucks pick Bedard. The Laffers pick some Russian kid who gets drafted. Nasty. -
Doesn't this just smell bad? Bankman-Fried apparently lent himself $1 billion and another $2.3 billion to a company he owns. I was back handed a while back by repeating Charlie Munger's suggestion that crypto currencies were a massive fraud. Trying to learn my lesson I did a brief research. Fundamentally I like block chain technology which crypto rolls itself in. Transferring 'coins' require an exchange. These exchanges are not regulated and largely function on trust. The libertarian heaven of transferring assets in an anonymous manner. Crypto is not currency but an asset. In a 3rd world country where government currency can change radically there could be a utility. In 1st world, not so much. Other, safer ways to protect yourself. FTX is/was the 4th largest crypto exchange handling $600 billion year to date (YTD). The largest is Biance which handled $4.6 Trillion YTD. The industry did $8.19 trillion YTD. Is there another FTX in this mix? No one knows, yet. With lack of oversight there could be. I doubt this situation has the contagion of the bank crisis of 2008. Crypto has a narrow base of utility.

What a novel idea. A CAP within the CAP! The accounting departments within NHL orgs will be hiring more pencil pushers (Like me) to keep track. I am making fun but otally understand and kinda agree with your point. AT what point does the last deal that goes down get discounted by other NHL orgs as being irresponsible. The level of desperation varies significantly within the league. Timelines impact certain actions as well. Many moving parts. -

It could easily be a multi player deal. I will be happy if a d-man comes back that is young enough to mature into a top 4 D-man. But I am also hoping for a + on that type of deal. -

Your right. Actually Brock's ppg is more than decent. He still might be able to carve a spot for himself. My take on him is that he is a chip that might be flipped into a d-side asset. If the 2 Russians were more consistent I suspect BB would be gone. Bottom line, the better he plays the better the return. -
