Metro gas prices on the rise again, expected to keep climbing
Boudrias replied to Sophomore Jinx's topic in Off-Topic General
You might remember the last time the idea of a BC refinery was suggested. Black of Black Press fame tried to work up an investment group to build a 500,000 boe refinery in Rupert, I think. He didn't get very far if memory serves. Easy to talk about such things but they usually don't proceed because the economics aren't there. An interesting side note. Most countries consider refining capacity as national security infrastructure. Crude oil can be bought globally but refining it is a strategic necessity. -
Metro gas prices on the rise again, expected to keep climbing

The lack of knowledge associated with the oil industry is staggering. One of the key derivatives is supply contracts. Refineries have to maximize volume to drive costs down. Part of their process in contracting volumes to ensure that maximum production. That process goes thru a 'bid & ask' which establishes pricing. As you pointed out demand and supply makes up a huge part of this. When an refinery goes down it impacts supply. Customers who are buying outside their contracted volumes have to pay more for what they can get, if they can get anything. Refineries don't just produce gasoline or diesel. They produce a whole range of products that require storage and distribution. Build a new refinery: Such suggestion ignores the economics. New refineries require years to construct and the scale is at 500.000 barrels per day to be economic. There hasn't been a new refinery built in North America for decades. Old refineries are updated and streamlined. Refineries are often crude specific. that is why heavy Canadian crude is so popular in Texas as many of those refineries use it. Refineries on the 500,000 boe scale require huge markets. Western Canada markets are heavily weighed to diesel consumption by nature of our resource industrial base. In my day that meant gasoline was a surplus by-product that had to be marketed into the USA to get rid of it. Gasoline consumers benefited from low prices as a result. All this aside. What do people think will happen as hydrocarbon products are bypassed for renewables? Do people seriously think the industry will invest mone3y in new capacity? At some point serious people have to map out a strategy that gets from A to B. Today we don't have serious people in government to make that happen. -
Whatever was going on in China seems to be resolved. Apparently air traffic going into Bejing has resumed. Still no public appearances of Xi Jinping for a number of days. Xi must be putting the final touches on China's plans to annex Siberia from Russia.

I have been a big fan of the USA all my life. Saying that I have also believed for decades that USA and Canadian interests do not always align. Canadians have deferred to the Americans to many times. Canada has been treated as the storage trove of raw resources that could be accessed on the cheap by USA interest. That is not the American's fault it is ours. Keystone XL is a classic example. IMHO Harper and then Trudeau should have used their authority to ensure pipelines were built to both coasts to ensure export of Canadian energy to world markets. Absolutely a national security issue that transcends even the economic argument. Revenue from energy would have financed any number of national priorities, one being economic diversification. It never ceases to amaze me how media never discusses the lost opportunity costs associated with the energy industry. -
The general ignorance or lack of respect for capital markets will manifest in misallocation and likely higher prices. Easier to label it corporate greed rather than exploring the real causes.

A recession should clear the political table. Canada is desperate for responsible leadership. Canada's ace was the energy industry and it has been pissed away. Lost revenue that could have sheltered the country from what we will experience. -

My concern with a MF is the MER associated with it. How much is it? Do MF's outperform a ETF? ETF's have much cheaper MER's. Set up a self directed brokerage account with Qtrade or equivalent. Do some research and buy ETF's that give the diversification you are getting in the MF. It should be cheaper. The added advantage in this type of account is that as your comfort level grows you can buy individual stocks. If I could do things differently I would have focused on dividend stocks much earlier in life. There is so much BS associated with stock markets that causes indecision and exploitation. -

I don't put much credence in comparisons to past data. My biggest issue is the financial status of past governments, businesses and consumers. The debt level today is so much higher, across the board. The ability to react will be much more limited, especially if there is a crisis of overall confidence. IMHO politicians have been using debt for decades to try and spend their way to growth. Not going to happen. Does it take a '30's style depression to bring fiscal sanity back into the picture? -

Farmland prices cannot compete with residential land values. I am not a NDP fan but will give them full credit for the ALR. As you rightfully point out food security is a necessity. I also think farmland interspersed within community makes people appreciate it more. Soothing to look at as well. Vancouver and area have to go up not out. -

Buy yield at + 5% and ride it out. If you don't need the cash flow then use it to buy more stock as opportunity presents. -

Slowly building a position in GSY. Their 2024 EPS estimates show a lot of growth. Now their moving to car financing. -
Nope, government spending has nothing to do with inflation. Obviously a right wing hoax.

Well balanced attack both by air and on the ground. Lions defense keeps improving.

His coach was the World Bank that forced the Liberal Chreitian government to reign in their spending. Hardly done because of responsible government.

[PTO] Danny DeKeyser with Canucks
Boudrias replied to The King of Kings's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I agree Sam. It takes some conviction and judgement to take ice away from a vet who can still do the job but doesn't fit long term. His ice has to go to players who can improve to be part of a contending team in 2-3 years. How do you get a realistic evaluation or development of a young player when he is not playing against NHL competition? How do you give young players in Abby a taste if there is no ice? I guess you wait for injuries. -
