  1. Does Poolman have to play a physical game to be effective? Last year when he returned and started to get game shape he increased his contact and then was gone. If his headaches return he is likely done. If he can play a steady 2RD it helps the Canucks big time. I would still like to see OEL tried as a RD on the #1 PP unit.
  2. I agree. When he is healthy he can dominate in the ozone. Big body and nice shot.
  3. You have done some solid thinking on this. As someone who was doing business during the late '70's and early '80's I experienced bank rates that threatened 20%. My caution to you is that the government balance sheets are no where close to being as strong as they were then. You have a whole society now built on cheap money. What happens when it gets more expensive? Personal debt is at all time highs. Anyone who thinks there government will continue to puke out money are way off base IMHO. If a serious crunch happens not only will people not be able to afford their mortgages but their jobs could be at risk. People's finances will crumble and corporations will go under along with the jobs they provide. The political response to fiscal responsibility has been repeated kicking of the can into the future. It is the easy thing to do and has appealed to many voters. IMHO most of our political leaders have very poor credentials for any decision making that have fiscal implications. What about our government institutions? Again, IMHO most have a political agenda rather than a prudent protection of the taxpayer. Actually there is an inherent conflict of interest as their budgets are based on an increasing tax take. Our politicians were supposed to be the counsel of sober 2nd thought on budgets. We can see where that has led us.
  4. It was not long ago that the Sens and their management and ownership were the laughing stock of the NHL. IMHO what they have done is a classic rebuild. They aggregated a huge number of picks and then developed them, traded them and now are supplementing them as they are rapidly moving toward contention. They are way ahead of Vancouver. All this aside I still give the new management the opportunity to move this club along with some degree of optimism. There are pieces here. The primary need is still on defense. Hopefully that is addressed this fall.
  5. As one in the trade Miller persuasion I can only assume management has other irons in the fire. JT is definitely not another LE. Another assumption will be a resumption in CAP growth to mitigate contract costs. The options available to PA versus what Benning had available to him is like night and day.
  6. As a 25 year old he is entering his prime as a NHL d-man. No, we don't know his top yet but I thought he was pretty responsible in his zone play after he arrived in Van. I don't see a top 4 player here but if he can tighten up the bottom end then he is a +. If he can play effective RD minutes then he can give coaching and management some time to find the RD that can truly improve that position.
  7. Eventually it becomes a financial decision. An NHL ambition which costs lost income compared to what he can make now playing in Europe. His endorsements alone will be significant.
  8. My hope is that Dermott will blossum in Vancouver. He is the right age to take what he has learned and parlay it into a top 4 role. If he can play RD effectively then JR hit a homerun making this trade.
  9. I am with you. Some nights offence cannot win a game and the d-side does. Championship teams have good shutdown crews. Look at how the Av's 4th line totally took over.
  10. Exactly. I suspect there are willing trade partners just not at the value PA wants. Totally agree with you that the Canucks have to get back what is needed or the waiting game continues.
  11. Trade Miller so Petey won't use him as a crutch and be forced to learn the C position. Petey resumes his scoring pace and his d-side game makes him a 1C even if his FO % is a shade less than 50%. Petey is the future not JT. Trade Miller for a RD ++
  12. I was never a fan of the ALR but must admit seeing value after all these years. There might be some value in determining subsets of the type of farming allowed within distances of urban dwellings. IMHO density has to increase and that means higher buildings along the transit corridors. That would take care of the problem for awhile.
  13. Would not be surprised to see the NHL try for a NFL styled contract.
  14. Give Chaisson a PTO and who's ice are you going to give him? His utility in Van is done.
  15. I hesitate to give Gorbachev to much credit. He was a product of the communist system and was selected by that system to be their leader. His ascension was not democratic and could have been a calculated effort by the Politburo to take global political advantage. Some issue behind the scenes led to the USA not supporting Gorbachev in more liberalized treatment of Russia. This was a time when the players in control were Cold War vets. Whatever led to the talks with Reagan and led to the ultimate breakup of the Soviet Union must have been serious. Debt was high. Growth poor. The satellites weren't happy. Communism had not delivered on their promise. Most people in the west want reconciliation with a much more liberal Russia. In 91'92 the Russian people went thru hard times and that benefited Putin as they grasped for support. What will they have to experience before they accept liberalism and democracy. There will be a price.
  16. Truly a great man. Both grandfathers arrested by the KGB for criticizing the Party. His father was a farmer in a collective. Gorbachev was decorated at 17 years old for how hard he worked on the farm. Reagan had a rough time as a youth. I expect that both these men liked one another. Their candid, off the record, conversations must have been fascinating. Truly unfortunate that Bush Sr did not push through more support for Gorbachev as the Soviet Union collapsed. They might have been able to swing Russia away from the Dark Side. Maybe Biden will achieve what Bush could not. Different means but the same result the collapse of the Russian Communist Party.
  17. Last I checked Vancouver did not have anything close to McDavid or Draisaitl combo.
  18. The deal to bring a RD has not happened 'yet'. I hold out hope. The wild cards going into the season are Rathbone and Dermott. Rathbone was a force in the AHL last season. Can he make the transition to the NHL? I liked the Dermott deal. At his age and experience we can hope that he might play some top 4 minutes and do a credible job. No guarantees but I am a Canuck fan and have my rose tinted shades on. Something I have wanted to see is Hughes and OEL on the same PP. It would require one of them to play the off side but Hughes has done that in the past. Not sure about OEL?
  19. Canucks now have 2 Russians and 1 Belarusian playing for the team. Depending how the war is going in Ukraine there is a chance their visa might be canceled by both Canada and the USA. There is a movement in Europe to restrict all Russian tourist visas. This is a cloud hanging over the Canuck season.
  20. For sure there are risks on both sides of this equation. At the end of the day what do we know? Obviously JR & PA have a bottom line that hasn't been met yet either in resigning Miller or trading him. There cannot be much doubt about what they want in a trade return as NHL clubs mull over their circumstances. I will be surprised if this is not resolved before training camp or shortly there after.
  21. Totally agree. Not worried about how JT might perform over the next 3 years. It is all about the last 3-4 years of his contract. Resigning him does not change the team's timeline. It does not change the CAP exposure the team has. If the Canucks were CUP contenders I might feel differently. Should Vancouver move Miller for younger assets who will compliment the younger core? This would have its own risks but signing a high CAP contract has bigger concerns as the core's contracts mature.
  22. You don't deserve an update. MIA at a critical time. I can only hope the fish were tasty.
  23. Will we see him at the WJC in December? Hope so.
