  1. Geez Nik the Russian options are being shot full of holes by the Ukrainian army. Better look at the SHL.
  2. We could easily think of many scenarios that would cause some concern for whatever reason. Most of those concerns would never manifest. In the case of the Russian players how do you sit a young 20 year old down and discuss the politics of Russia in a serious way? Not saying those conversations should not happen. Bottom line is that a political situation might occur that will force them home and that would really hurt the Canucks. Do the Detroit Red Wings not draft Canadian hockey players because they might not take vaccines? It can get to far out there. As a Canuck fan I have always been upset by the lack of Western Canadian players on the team or as prospects. Two of the greatest Canucks, Stan Smyl and Trevor Linden were Canadian boys from the West. Would Western Canadian players want to stay in Vancouver more than others would? As I said Calgary has concerns, likely the Jets will and we know many players refused to go to Edmonton. IMO the bottom line is the quality of coaching and management and team mates.
  3. Sounds very nice. Sign Try and there will be 5 Russians on the team and another 5 prospects. With the war in Ukraine Canuck management has to be concerned about these players being forced back to Russia. Concern can also be raised about our American players. The concern is different and likely not as concerning but if you ask Calgary fans they might have a different opinion. Why did Tkachuk and Gudreau really want to go back to the USA? Taxes? If it is taxes then that concern might apply to all of the roster. Having these concerns is being aware and weighing risks.
  4. In essence Canada has 6 major banks. The USA has multi thousands. Regulators have resisted any M&A. TD has been trying to buy First Horizon in the US South East and been blocked. There is an argument that bigger reduces costs but that efficiency often costs jobs. The amount of investment in tech is huge. Not sure how regional banks can stay competitive. In Canada the credit Unions might be a comparable. They don't have to comply with reserve funds to the same level the main banks do. In our area 7 credit unions looked at merging and all dropped out except for 2 because they thought the cost outweighed the benefits. I don't see that being the case but what do I know. Maybe more about management trying to save their jobs. I have been buying GSY instead of the major banks.
  5. Sweet! I tuned in for the late game and was wondering who won the Laffer-Florida game. At the end of the 1st it was "crickets" on the panel. All they could talk about was the Dallas-Seattle game. I knew then that the Panthers had won!!!! So Canuck alumni Forsling and Dalpe are playing. Good on them especially Dalpe who has stuck it out for many years. Schenn is steady as hell and has actually elevated his game IMHO. Unlike other Laffer team mates. Go Florida!
  6. Bruins could be in trouble with pending retirements. Bottom line is that they have shown a greater ability to rebuild themselves than the Canucks have. 2011 seems like a life time ago. I am hoping that this management group can chart a better path for the Canucks. I like what we have seen so far.
  7. Not a big fan of trying to prevent clearing on the back hand and then pivoting for a shot or pass. Some d-men can do this very well.
  8. I thought he was in the gym? He can pair up with Tony Stecher.
  9. Canucks need at least 2 top 4 d-men that have size, assuming Meyers is gone. A balance between Hughes and Hronek. Schenn as a bottom pairing but I am not high on the idea as I prefer a younger player gets that TOI so he can develop. Gear it all for 3 years out for serious compete.
  10. It was a huge failure in Canuck player development. McCann is now 26 years old. Games Goals Assists Points +/- Vanc 69 9 9 18 - 6 * as a 19 year old on a very weak team FLD 143 18 35 53 + 1 * 2 1/2 years; 20 - 22 years old PITT 141 39 45 84 + 31 * 2 1/2 years; Lost to expansion to Seattle SEA 153 67 53 120 - 8 * - 26 in the first year of Seattle expansion I would suggest that McCann showed steady improvement in his career. He spent 42 games in the AHL during his first season with Florida. Exactly what Vancouver should have done but instead rushed him into the NHL. McCann and Virtanen's development was not good. Why would players want to play in Van whether for the Canucks or Utica? People talk about McCann's attitude being a problem. Cannot speak to that much. I can say that Pitt didn't want to lose him.
  11. Sutter had to make a choice. Castrate another 20 steers or go into town and play footsy with a bunch of spoilt boys. No wonder he was always pissed off.
  12. Look at the Macdonald's on the south end of Georgia. Last time we were down that way there were 3 people in there who had obvious mental and drug problems. Regular problem from what I could see.
  13. Looking at Round 1 is just that, Round 1. You have to win 16 games. Yes, smaller, talented teams can win but I take the odds even up.
  14. I get your point and play can beat size. But you have to win 16 games for a CUP. Florida has won 4. Good on them but I still want 4 big d-men to compliment Hughes and Horenk and maybe Hirose.
  15. I can certainly remember him playing the RD. His big hit on Benn was on the right side.
  16. I guess it makes a dif who is making those comparisons. If you took a AHL team over to Switzerland and played a NL team how would they make out? I guess the only comparable is the Spengler Cup. In the past the KHL has sent a team but it did not win. The Davos team usually does well but they get to pick up extra players. I like the idea of sending a couple of AHL teams over for exhibition games.
  17. Resign this summer. Maybe we will get a 2dn rdr for him next year.
  18. Oilers will take this. Lots of depth and a better defense with Ekholm. LA d-side did a nice job but is Vegas better than them? IMO the Oiler offence will overwhelm Vegas. To much speed and to many weapons. Kane and Bjugstad are playing really well.
  19. I have absolutely no problem with Florida reserving first dibs to their fans. The Laffers can have to leftovers.
  20. Unfortunately I didn't see any of Hronek's games with Vancouver. I was out of country. When I looked at Detroit's stats Hronek was 2nd on d-man scoring to Seider. What I noticed was there were 3 d-men less than 200 pounds and moving Horenk reduced that to 2. When you look at the contending Cup teams almost all have big d-men. Was that a Yzerman decision to get bigger. The Detroit defensive group are all pretty decent point producers. Moving Hronek looks pretty calculated to me. This is why I have to reserve judgement. The fact that Hronek was traded does not mean he won't fit in very well in Vancouver. IMHO it does mean that Allvin has to find bigger d-men especially if Meyers is gone. "Fast & Fancy" works during the regular season but playoffs are a grind and often a victory thru attrition. Another Yzerman deal worth considering is his trade of Bertuzzi. Many questioned moving him because of his production. Nice size and truculence as Burkie used to say. Bottom line is his career +/- was not good and his cost was due to escalate with a new contract. Bruins gave up a 1st & 4th for Bertuzzi. They have to hope Covid doesn't come back as we know he is a anti-vaxer. Boston has the rep for molding players to their system so it might work out well.
