  16. Vancouver Canucks (51-24-7) vs Winnipeg Jets (43-26-13) Between the Pipes Thatcher Demko (27-10-4, 2.44 GAA. 922 sv%) vs Connor Hellebuyck (33-21-11, 2.56 GAA, .911 sv%) Edge: Vancouver Vancouver employed a new strategy which may take the NHL by storm. This year, Vancouver hired former GM Mike Gillis as the head sports phycologist for the club. One of the philosophies Gillis brought to the club was load management. Among all starting goalies, Thatcher played the least with 43, splitting the crease with fellow netminder Hogberg. On the other end, Winnipeg played Hellebuyck, 65 games. Will the increased rest Thatcher received during the regular season pay dividends in the playoffs or will the mileage on Hellebuyck's body catch up this season. X-Factor Winnipeg: Is this the year where the question of "will the experience of previous years help Hellebuyck" Connor is clearly the more experienced of the 2 starting goalies in this series. Connor has played in the post season for the 5 seasons thus far but has a modest 8-14, 3.01 GAA, .895 sv%. Connor needs to rise up this season and play lights out for Winnipeg to have a chance this series. Projected Forward Lineup Vancouver Lafreniere-Duchene-Tarasenko Mittlestadt-Karlsson-Sprong Comtois-Gaudette-Zuccarello Foligno-Kotkaneimi-Vrana Winnipeg Connor-Scheifle-Laine Popugayev-Malkin-Schilkey Vatrano-McCann-Kase Lemieux-Malgin-Eklund The first line of the Canucks have been dominating the NHL all season. The first line of the Canucks sit 1,2, and 4 in the league in scoring. Tarasenko and Lafreniere are both 40 goal scorers and Duchene are a nice compliment to the line. Their second line, anchored by Karlsson is defensively responsible and is often used against the other team's top line. The Canucks have been characterized this season as being a top heavy team, due to most of the lifting done this season done by the top guys, however, the Canucks have scoring options on all 4 lines. The major glaring hole on the Canucks is the 4th line. Often, playoff teams have a 4th line of responsible, defensive veterans. The 4th line of the Canucks are unconventional in that they like to play offensive and take risks, and thus often gets burned by the other team. Look for the coach of the Canucks to insert some more defensive minded players, sacrificing offense for defense if things go south. Winnipeg, although not as high flying as the Canucks also have stars and former stars throughout their team. Connor, Scheifle, and Laine have been a stable for many years tormenting the league. Laine is a former Art Ross, Hart, and Calder winner and is essentially a career PPG player. Connor and Scheifle are great compliments for Laine as a both are consistent 70 point players. On the 2nd line, the experience of Malkin may be a difference maker. Father time is clearly catching up to Malkin as he produced a career worse 47 points but that is nothing to scoff about. His experience will help fellow Russian Popugayev in his 2nd career NHL series. The Jets have depth throughout the lineup and can capitalize at any time. Defense Vancouver Chabot-Theodore Robertson-Romanov Juolevi-Juulsen Winnipeg Letang-Trouba Niku-Bouchard Valamki-Tryamkin After the first pairing of Letang and Trouba, the defense on the Jets are thin. Letang, in his age 36 year played a season average of 27:12, 2 minutes more than last season. Already with a lot of wear and tear on the body, can Letang be asked to sustain a high level of play for that long throughout the playoffs. Series prediction: Vancouver in 6. The defense on the Jets cannot keep up with the offense of the Canucks and thus will burn.
