It’s actually less because we were paying 800k of his salary. Just jettison some baggage and we’re good. Better he did it now than later as you say. Have to respect the guy’s integrity. Choosing not to use the IR loophole and take a lot of money. Most including myself wouldn’t do that. thank you Lou, for all you did for us , the excitement and congrats on a great career and a HHOF induction down the road

Why retire vs LTIR? He gets paid for three years if he goes in LTIR not if he retires
-
No, it’s about compete. How did Sakic, Yzerman, hell even Marner, Patrick Kane and Marty St Louis compete in the playoffs? It’s about size it’s about compete.

well the point is, whining about a lottery pick before its a lottery pick is sort of silly

Thanks, I was wondering why he wasn’t on the list. Given he has to spend his own money to come, no reason for him to come for off ice stuff. He probably wouldn’t be able to participate in most of that either, as a lot of it is active

LOL- really trying hard aren't you? What's your id on hockey forums guy?

Camp is going to be a battle as will the first 20 games to cement spots. TBH I think Leivo and Goldy are the bubble players who now have to take spots in order to stick. Else one will be kept as depth, the other will be moved

[Discussion] 2019 Canucks Developmental Camp

His numbers look really good, good size as well. Maybe a little steal there. http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=171240 -
How about the fans then, assess the trade on the results in 2 years, as that is clearly the issue (or one if they make the playoffs this year).

a. Bolded - irony b. It was sarcasm and the reality that Nylander is more a beneficiary of playing with great players than being one, and he's overpaid c. On Boeser see your bolded comment. Your logic would suggest a trade of Boeser for Nylander would be reasonable. I would posit Boeser is much more valuable of a player and is not perimeter player at all.

I think Hughes is more than ready to be a top 4 given the offense he'll create and he certainly will be by 2021. Pair him with tanev or a ufa and our top 4 is solid enough to compete. If we don't make it in this year we have our pick Tryamkin's season ends in March, so we add him in too, he's better than a 5-6. If OJ can play, by next year he's pushing along with Tryamkin for top 4 minutes. We can also make moves during the season and off season next year to improve our D even further if it doesn't work out as well as we hope. There's no way if JB signs a RD UFA or trades for one, with Tryamkin, OJ, Hughes, Stecher (who has very good underlying numbers btw) Edler and Tanev or a Tanev replacement, combined with what we have upfront now, that anyone should think this team cannot make the playoffs in 2021

Go ask toronto fans what they think of pretty willy. I live in Toronto, most want the bum out because of his lack of compete in the playoffs guy. I played Junior A many many years ago. Put me on a line with Matthews, on the PP with Reilly, Matthews, Tavares, and Marner, Dude I could get 11 pts. SMH think about context No one wants overpaid perimeter player taking up cap space when it counts bro. You pay guys 8 mil who are drivers of offense and show up in the playoffs not who play outside and get pity points from playing with talent

I'm not suggesting he's a game breaker whatsoever. But rather he's going to do the things our gamebreakers need to be even better. ie Burrows with the twins. The twins were great players, and would have been regardless, but even they credit Burr for being the guy who allowed them to take the next step. I also don't think JB did this out of desperation, his job is to win. His job is to get these kids the support they need to start getting playoff tested. You don't win a cup by sucking every year for a decade and hoping you get first rounder after first rounder to get you in, and then win by the time you get in. Firstly, your players who you got early, Horvat etc are beaten down, frustrated, probably want out (aka edmonton), you know how to lose not win, etc. This team is 1 right D away from the playoffs and being a thorn in the side of anyone they play. Can they win cup with this roster NOW. I doubt it. But give their core 3 years of playoff experience, an older Petey, Boeser, Bo, JV, Hughes, OJ, Tryamkin, etc and you know what, maybe. But you need to learn how to win in the playoffs by being IN the playoffs guy, not by collecting first rounders like they are hockey cards.

someone should have converted him to a winger. The kid has wheels, smarts, hands, is tough and strong for his size but is just too small for D. Playing and trying to learn to play D in a big man's league has likely made him at least very good defensively as a forward. I am not sure why no one has every given him that opportunity. He's got a better chance of being successful at his size in the NHL as a forward than as a dman.

[Report] Lazar and Rychel not qualified
18W-40C-6W replied to HKSR's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Question you have to ask is, why hasn't he by now? Maybe he just can't improve enough? He's 24, he's had ample time. I think at this stage he is what he is. Would be useful in Utica though as a RH center -
I know many like Hutton, I do too, but he's fully replaceable. In my view he's a tweener and as such more of 5/6 depth guy, and as such he's not worth the 4.5 needed to retain him with a qualifying offer. He's big but doesn't use his body enough to be a punisher Good skater and decent offensively but not a pp specialist Decent defensively but no Tanev / defensive specialist. I'd be fine with us running with Sautner and Brisbois who are due for an opportunity and do everything well also. Hutton has become redundant and unless he's willing to take 5/6 money we don't need him, he's never going to be a difference maker.
-
But but we could have got so much for Hutton and Granlund!!!!! JB and his bad asset management!!! Maybe people should accept that the market they may perceive for our players, is not necessarily the real market for our players now?

[Discussion] Colorado Going after the big two
18W-40C-6W replied to Squamfan's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Well they have missed the playoffs 7 of out the last 10 years, and 8 of 11, when you've had that kind of futility eventually you get better from your picks! http://www.hockeydb.com/stte/colorado-avalanche-5307.html -

He's not a quick enough skater. Had all the other tools but he's never going to be a NHL player unless somehow he makes changes to his skating like Bo did. -

funny how some times first round picks don't work out hey? Maybe someone should tell all the kids having tantrums about the Miller trade! LOL -
I appreciate your take, and respect it, but I think people are overvaluing that pick - now this is the big if, IF we make the playoffs in 2021. The cost of a legit top 6 winger with Miller's numbers is typically much higher, its usually a first, a very good prospect and a later pick (and UFA look at what Hayes go paid salary wise). We gave up the first, a mean nothing pick and baggage. Sure if its a lottery pick it would look bad, but even so, assuming he can up his 50 pt numbers playing on the first or second line at 18 mins a night (vs 3rd line and 14 mins), play on the pp/pk and help improve that, (all of which are reasonable expectations) along with his terrific physical 2 way play, was it really that much of an issue? We can address D in ufa's, and again, maybe the deals just weren't out there for a RD and if you wait, who knows maybe he's gone. Clearly there would have been competition for him, again people make assumptions that the league will wait for us, it doesn't. You have to often act now to take advantage of an opportunity when its there, vs waiting because if you wait the deal is gone. Miller is literally EXACTLY what this team needed. A top 6 LW (who's actually a C and good in the circle, so he gives us depth there too and options should injuries crop up as they always do), with skill, size, plays 2 ways, can drop them if needed and will, on a great contract, still young. I find it odd how people are worrying more about what's likely a 18th or 19th overall pick vs what we just added to our lineup. I don't think people really understand the value of this kid to our group.

The issue I have with your comment above, and many similar, is you make an implicit assumption that JB didn’t have such conversations with other teams about a top 4 RD, without even having insight into whether he did or not. No one knows, not you, me or the idiot Vancouver media hacks. He has stated many times he was looking to upgrade our defence via UFA or trade. What makes you think he hasn’t inquired on those names and many others and those teams wanted even more? My guess, is that’s that case and he felt he can use the pick for a forward and address defence via UFA and Tryamkin in March, as top 4 RDs command a huge premium beyond a first rounder that JB was unlikely willing to give up (aka our youth).
