  1. True but ronning was also not a one dimensional player and a great great skater
  2. And not every player can improve their skating the way Bo, did, he was an exception not the rule. If it were as easy as just getting a good skating coach, alot of the weaker skaters in the league would have improved as well.
  3. LOL, keep on trollin little boy. And yes I do think they should take Seider. Much as I thought they should take Petterson last year. Carry on being angry at life. Sorry your life is so challenging that getting angry on message boards is your only way to get it out. Be well. www.mindcheck.ca could be of help if you need
  4. Dude sounds like one from "hockeyforums" that scurried in between the cracks
  5. Boeser is also a winger, who played his entire first season with our Best center, a strong winger, and on PP1 and OT, then a superstar center his second year and the PP1 again, along with OT. Playing third / fourth line center is a much more defensively heavy role, with alot less offensive support. You may want to look at Horvat's first year as a proxy. He was .36 ppg, Guadette who was up and down and a 'fill in' given our depth at center, so never really 'settled' in, was .22 ppg. Your views don't suggest you know the game very well. Travis Green has said great things about his play and where it's headed, I guess you don't understand the nuances of the game.
  6. Yep just like a 22 yr old 5th round pick who won the hobey baker and is just getting used to being a NHL player, he's a bust! Like Juolevi, a 21 yr old Dman, who progressed at every level and has just had some unlucky injuries, he's a bust! it amazes me how stupid some people are.
  7. They take Seider! And they should be taking a defenseman. If you look at our D right now it’s made up of QH - our only first round pick dman AE- 3rd rounder CT- FA TS- FA BH - 5th rounder AB - 5th rounder while draft position doesn’t always mean success, there is clearly a correlation here between our awful defense and the fact we haven’t made much of an effort to draft in the early rounds on D.
  8. And he’s got the attitude of a player that you win with. Kid is a competitor and leader. He’s worth a lot more to us that a #15ish pick now.
  9. I don’t like the idea of trading down. Take the guy you want and think is the bpa. Someone in between 10 and wherever they trade may want him or have your player second (and their first pick goes) and what happens then. Who cares if true “rankings” have a player at this or that. No one knows what other teams want and unless it’s only a one position move and you’re guaranteed that team is taking another player, moving is not wise.
  10. If you dont think GMs and scouting staffs have that bias, why are so many european stars in the NHL not 1-4th overall picks. Go look at the drafts guy. I could care less what fans think, fans don't make the picks that provided the proof behind our assertion Petey would have gone higher other than his weight, yet a slow 5/'7'' smurf who can score bushel fulls from NA is moving up the lists fast (Caulfield). If was in europe do you really think he'd be getting the same recognition?
  11. The point he’s making (and I) is the similarity to Petey (and other European players ) is that they tend to have a “discount” applied to them because a) scouts have not seen them enough b) there’s an inherent bias in nhl scouting that the quality of leagues is OHL, WHL, US, QMJHL, Europe. Unless a player is SO much better in Europe, only then does he get the credit he deserves, Ovie, Malkin, etc. Every year there are players from Europe ranked well below their actual talent because of that North American bias in the rankings. So the comparison to Petey was that his talent should have had him much higher, same with Pasternak for instance and many others. No one is suggesting he’s as elite as Petey, just that his ranking has materially undervalued him due to where he plays and that “bias”. With his tools he legitimately could become the best dman in the draft if developed properly. There are no weaknesses in his game. Does he have Byram’s offense? No, but as an all around dman he could be and will likely be better. Even the NHLers who played with him on Team Germany were saying great things.
  12. I want Seider Big RD Can skate has high hockey IQ and character plays physical strong defensively he’s got upside to be a real #1 and at worst Parayko / Myers type floor. To me it’s a no brainer unless some one crazy falls. I feel like he’s this years Petey (not skill wise) but due to the Euro discount and not enough eyeballs on him, he’s not ranked as high as he could be. I honestly think he will be the steal of the draft, much like Chabot was.
  13. Its about 'attitude'. Some players play bigger than their size, some smaller. This can be seen as juniors, in their interviews etc. This is why the scouting process is so important, and why its funny how people who are fans think they know more from watching a few videos and reading some fan scouting reports. Scouting is as much about tools as is it is about character and heart and desire to make it/get better. No one drafted Burrows, no one drafted Panarin, Krug, Tyler Johnson, Martin Jones, Chris Kunitz, Bobrovski, Ed Belfour, Adam Oates, Peter Stastny, Martin St Louis, Borje Salming, Tim Kerr, our own Greg Adams, Joe Mullen, Dino Cicerelli - this shows that its not always about size, weight, or some 'measurable talent or stat'. This is why I believe JB and team have focused heavily on character- how bad does a kid want it, how hard will he work to get better. Because all these kids from mid first to 6th round really have similar levels of skill but have deficiencies in their game, whether it be physically or skill wise. Much of that can be over come from desire as the names above show. Its not the size of the dog in the fight, but the fight in the dog as they say.
  14. Agree with all you've said, especially the maturity side. I think Jake's biggest issue was he came into the league too early and being the hometown 'golden boy' felt he had 'made it'. I think he has learned from his time being sent down, to how Green has 'managed' him, that its not only about being an 'every day player' as he's said alot, but with the addition of Petey and watching Bo, its actually about getting better, every day and you must try to do so for the team. I mentioned this in another thread, but in the post season presser, when the players were asked if they had been given a call by team canada, Jake responded with a laugh and under his breath said in a self deprecating manner "ya right"....to me this said a great deal about him. He realized he didn't have a season that would make him look to be recognized, and that he needs to be better. This is a sign of his maturing process. Another sign, albeit maybe silly but its telling to me, he's stayed off social media. He's not posting all the time to instagram, he's being smart and now learning he's a pro. He's not looking for attention, this again, is a sign of maturing. Bo, Petey, Stech, Boeser are all good examples for him, even Hutton, what they've shown is you can improve if you focus and grow up. Jake seems to be getting there, and I really think a bit part of his issue was not talent, it was mindset. And anyone watching Petey on that team now knows what it means to compete. When your best player is competes like him, night in night out, no one has an excuse, and there is a trickle down effect. Jake is going to come back even better next year, and take the next step. I expect 30-35 pts and improved physicality.
  15. Big fan of his as well but at the end of the day, I trust this scouting group to pick a talented player for us. They have seen all these guys alot and know the nuances of their games that we don't see. There are so many players grouped in the 5-15 range that whomever we pick, I just hope (and know it won't happen), that the fans are just happy with our new player and don't start hating a player just because they wanted this guy or that guy. Once we pick, that player is a Canuck, cheer for him regardless
  16. my guess is they probably hold alot back for players and their familes for obvious reasons. I am sure they'll release more closer to given some tickets wont be claimed. I am simply basing this assumption on watching past drafts where you see alot of the junior kids family members there. My guess is they must have some agreement with the CHL, NCAA, and european leagues. Given its such a pivotal moment in these young men's lives, allowing them first dibs would make sense
  17. He doesn't have danglers hands, but he doesn't have hands of stone, he can snipe. Agree with the rest. All he has to learn to do is play like Tom Wilson. He has more raw talent and all the tools (and more) than Wilson. He does that, we have a gem
  18. Gaudette is 'capable' of playing in the NHL, but it doesn't mean he's 'ready'. Much like McCann and Jake who were rushed, Gaudette has the raw skills, its obvious. The issue is, if the Canucks want that 'Hobey Baker" talent coming out, he needs to get top 6 ice and develop the confidence in his offensive game to be a difference maker / force his game on opponents. This is why most young players need time in the AHL, its hard to come up as a rookie and have that confidence when you're trying to impress, not to make mistakes, and usually chasing the game a bit. Only the exceptions like Petey, Kane, Mckinnon etc, are able to do it. I think a year in Utica would do him wonders. Spot duty here for injuries and when Sutter is moved.
  19. Why give up a first and a second this year at home when they only have to give up a likely lower 1st and 3rd next year? There won't be a bidding war for Kapanen and even then if there is and you offer him max dollars for that category (he won't get into the next bracket) then its up to him. He'll either want to play in vancouver or choose to play elsewhere is someone offers the same. In no way should the canucks be giving up a #10 and #40 for him. You give up a later #1 next year, and the third rounder that's what makes it worth it, since you're already overpaying him
  20. I don't think next year's first will be top 10. The team is ready to push for the playoffs, and should we address our D in the offseason as JB said, the pick shouldn't be that high. But fair point if they don't make enough or the right moves to get us in.
  21. Good article on Seider here, seems he's starting to get some attention (NHL players saying good things from playing with him about his poise and ability). I wonder if Edmonton goes off the board and takes him just ahead of us? I could see it, Edmonton tends to always screw us somehow https://www.nhl.com/news/moritz-seider-raising-nhl-draft-stock-at-world-championship/c-307540390
  22. No way we get Kap for Hutton. I was suggesting we offer sheet him. a first and a third is not a major cost. He's worth a first. He was a first and has exceeded his late first draft position. He's a legit top 6 winger who's young and skates like the wind. Imagine him with Petey? So the first is a wash, the third means nothing, we can get a third for many of our excess baggage players.
  23. We'd be a hell of alot better off with #8,#10 and Jake. The top 15 of this draft are very strong. It could be one of the best drafts in years in the ability of first rounders to become solid NHL'ers. I'd take Krebs, Cozens, or Podkolzin (if he's there) + Seider and Virtanen over one Hughes any day of the week
  24. Alf, you clearly don't watch the leafs much. I live in T.O and see most games on tv. They paid the wrong guy the money (Nylander). Kapanen is everything they want Nylander to be. Goes to the dirty areas, puck hound, forechecks, backchecks, is great on the PK, vast majority of his points are 5 on 5 not pp, fast as hell, left shot so he can play the left side, and scored 20 goals playing 2/3rd line. It's an overpayment NOW, but it won't be after next year. Its a smart move, as he's only 22. I'd rather over pay a player like that than over pay a 29 year old UFA I'm not a big advanced stats guy but his numbers are strong there as well https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/k/kapanka01-advanced.html
