Potential Benning Replacements?
ShawnAntoski replied to PetterssonOrPeterson's topic in Canucks Talk
Good take. Imo, Sakic has autonomy from his (non meddling) owner(s); and the biggest question for any incoming hire should be how much autonomy he will have to perform his duties properly. Aquaman, has to take a brunt of the blame and spending to the cap is not enough, if he is cutting cost in other important positions. -
Currently, any draft year were Gillis was in charge.

Potential Benning Replacements?
ShawnAntoski replied to PetterssonOrPeterson's topic in Canucks Talk
I was also thinking of MacFarland and the general approach of looking at AGM'S from clubs that had successfully navigated through the different cycles a pro sports team has to undertake. Imo and based on what I had seen in my career in corporate: some assistants are only meant to be an assistant cause being a top dog is very different (ie: JB). In terms of Colorado, Sakic is a very shrewd GM, based on his prospects & trades but his hardest job will be dealing with the cap & keeping the KEY talent together. Moving forward, I wonder how Aquaman will assemble HIS leadership group - this for me, is the most interesting part. -

Just like the situation with Quinn, it seems very comparable to when Sutter took over half way through last years with the Flakes. The 30 games gave him enough information on what he thinks the Flakes needed and Treliving worked with him. So far, the Flakes had bought into Sutters system and they are playing as a team. At this point and regardless of the result, I just want to watch a team that competes hard and is hard to play against. Overall, I am in agreement with the slow approach being taken by Aqauman & crew cause a panic move will only make it worse; and let's see how this whole thing will play out. -

Aquaman, should be looking for candidates in organizations that has a track record of successfully going through the cycles. -

Lots of things will have to go right for your intended outcome - with mediocrity as the only predictable factor. If next year is the goal, I wonder, what lessons would had been learn that would foster any worthwhile change moving forward. -

I get it; but Iam sure he is also asked about every player being looked at; and he determines how they are (ultimately) used & deployed. -

Learning the business ? I hope, whoever is mentoring them has a track record of winning in this league cause eventhough, they were a part of the core that gave us fans the best years & trophies: they fell short and the transition plan from that core is still an on going mess. -

The leadership group he assembled - ultimately, is a reflection of himself and his priorities. -

Doubt it too. Anyways, Aquaman needs to realize that owning a very public business is very different from his other ventures. -

Depends on the coach; unless ofcourse, the coach had made up his mind already. Lots of examples, from players eventually flaming out despite a scenery change and vice versa. It is a lottery ticket with young players and with older players, it is mostly know at there age. -

Ditto for the most part; except on JB: if he is willing, he would be a good AGM (like in Boston) - imo. As for Aquaman, spending to the cap seems to be his cover, for cutting cost in other important areas of running a successful franchise: Management & the Staff. There is lesson in this for the leadership group to the players and how each will respond should determine if they stay or go. Will Aquaman be reactive or responsive ??? -

Point by most posters are: those were YOUNG cheap depth and Green chose a bunch of OLDER waiver wire plugs that offer nothing different. Also, as a fan I would like for the team to had showcased them in the pre season as a treat - after reading up about them for so long. Let's see how they develope with there new clubs cause we already know where waiver wire plugs are going. -

Yeah, the echo chamber that has made this forum has made it boring but this coming together, will force some changes - hopefully for the better & long term. This is a perfect time, for Aqauman to bring in a consultant or a new POH with a track record or he & his friends can figure this out.... -

The coming together of the fans, shows how bad this whole situation (is) cause the roster tweaking is off the table and everything the staff had done continues to make everything worse - which with hindsight, confirms that they have no clue on what it takes to win in the NHL and should had never seen a third year - imo. Ofcourse, the same can be said, to a certain degree with JB & friends but the deeper roster buys them some time. Ultimately, it comes to down to Aquaman on what he will do moving forward & accept with this current situation. Imo, the WHOLE leadership group (including Green & his assistants) should be in the presser with JB to answer questions. Atleast, indulge the fans. -

It will be a vanilla interview with cookie cutter answers; good chance, the questions had been pre screened. The media schills in this market are partly to blamed cause they are unwilling to stir the pot with there - passive aggressive style - cause of the fear of losing a cushy job. Easy to tell: just lock at how PC & indirect the questions are. -

I get it; and I did offer up the traditional POV by emphasizing the context that the priorities of the kid/parents/family should always be considered when discussing a kids life in hockey. I do agree, that it is a very different society with social media and the very familiar flaws of human nature makes it a very slippery slope. Anyways, Aquaman being a business owner in Vancouver or BC - has to really consider, what is important & socially acceptable to the majority/all of his paying fans. -

Makes sense. It is fairly obvious, looking at it from a bigger POV, that the organization is lacking an independent voice or voices that has a track record of winning in this league cause anything they do at this point will only make things worse ie: just look at the on ice product and it says alot about how clueless this staff is. If I am Aquaman, I would invest more in my leadership group (moving forward), be more opened to opposing views and look at candidates in organizations that has a solid track record of winning. Deadmonton did it with Holland and that group didn't start clicking until he chose Tippet; but I still argue, they are a Smith injury away from missing the playoffs. -

FA, seems to be reading the, Dummies Book on Owning an NHL Franchise - revised edition. Kidding aside, the aggressive offseason bullet has been used - then what; and imo, it is critical that he needs to surround himself with a group/person that has won on this league - JB might qualify cause as an AGM with Boston they (were allowed to) gooned there way to a win (?); but he was not the top dog, so there is a difference.
