Next time - this heatwave is something else. -
Yeah, he seems to had been playing very focus for that carrot (like JM was) - I agree pass on him too cause he will be looking for term...

You misread my sarcasm - as a Canucks fan I could care less about the Sabres and just making a comment that it would probably be prudent for the Canucks to learn from there mistakes. -

Perhaps this guy will be the exception; but from a Canucks fan POV, our expansion cousin are doing just fine and should be a model Aquaman & JB should learn from. -
I get it but this past season was an uphill battle from the start - other teams would had recognized and focused on playing & showcasing the future; whereas teams like the Canucks are playing there vets & competing till (like you stated) the team is mathematically eliminated. With hindsight, which would had been the best decision ? Some teams fanbase are ok with tanking in a losing season and others have no real appetite for it - Aquaman knows this fact and will continue to conduct the (so called) rebuild the same way for the most part; although, the shake up off the ice has me hopeful that there might be some changes coming as well (?); and this off season will say alot about the team off the ice moving forward - imo.
-
Good takes; and I agree that this is not the offseason to go all in; and I would add, that the shakeup off the ice (Shaw and Sedins) should be given some time to takehold before any major roster tweaking. In general, the cheapest way for a team to acquire key pieces is through the draft; and once acquired, the team still needs to develope the player. Ofcourse, there is no guarantees the drafted player will not flop cause he might not click with the staff and/or teamates but good chance, a top 3 player will play in the NHL and perform (probably until he signs his last big contract or his only big contract) Imo, when discussing the importance of tanking (in a losing season) and the draft or a rebuild - a few things will have to be considered: the leadership team implementing the strategy & choosing the picks; and secondly, the overall talent available in the draft cause some drafts are top heavy with no depth, some have more depth and so on. Imo, only Buffalo, Deadmonton, Ottawa & NJ (changed GM last year) are current teams that I would consider to be a part of the perenial losers club - teams that seems to be stuck in mediocrity with some sprinkled in success (sounds familiar). As a counter, I am presenting: Yzerman, Blake and Murray (Anaheim) as counter examples to compare against those clubs as they go through there own rebuilds cause at this point these teams seems to be (mostly) following the slow rebuild plans of the teams you've mentioned. Also I agree, that tanking to draft higher is just one part of the equation - this is why I have always stated, that when looking at the perenial losers vs the (eventual) cup winners, the leadership team will have to considered as important context cause it is the gradual yearly improvements of the team that will buy them the time from an impatient owner and fanbase.

Maybe cause it seems Blake has somewhat expited the timeline (a tad) based on the rumour that some of the vets are asking him for one last shot to compete; regardless, they have cap moving forward to add (if necessary) and a pipeline full of cheap & talented prospects to fill out there rosters. Like I stated, this will come down to leadership and on the ice, it will be up to (mostly) Mclelland to put it all together. Seems a like a pretty good strategy from there POV (imo), to play there youths with there long time vets (that was also developed in there system and won) which gives the youths some legit experience and to gauge how far along the youths are. If it flops cause the youths are not ready (yet) then good chance VA will be getting shopped again but the one year experience for there new core will be alot more valuable.
-
Not sure, VA is only 27; Kings still have some hold overs from there cup years to mentor the upcoming youths, still have picks and lots of cap moving forward - ultimately, this comes down to a willing owner and the team leaders (Robitaille, Blake & (to a lesser degree) Mclleland) to implement the strategy and sell the vision to the owners, players and fans.
-
Of course, there is always an exception to any rules but in general, other teams are still implementing a tanking strategy in a LOSING SEASON with great long term result - like with any strategies it always comes down to leadership to implement it & sell the strategies to the owner(s), players and fans. It is all about managing risk managing risk and maximimizing assets. There are really no guarantees in life unless you are talking about death & taxes.
-
I can speculate but would rather not say; and asset management is not just on JB, some of it should fall on the staff as well cause (ultimately) usage & deployment are up to them Hope Rafferty the best (Rafalski Lite).
-
This fan based - thinks tanking are for lovers and it develops a losing culture (Deadmonton syndrome), despite the fact that alot of teams keeps tanking in a losing season with great results; and Aquaman knows this, so he keeps pushing for the playoffs regardless of whether it is obvious the season is lost.
-
Perhaps but JC got way more opportunities than Rafferty and he was nothing special - dime a dozen (imo).
-
I would add: let all the teams FA's walk and give those minutes to a youth.
-
Ditto; despite JBs' promises, game day deployment & usage is still a coaching decision; and in this case, Green played the players he trusted instead of giving an unknown a chance in a losing season. Rafferty did & excelled in everything that was asked of him and I wish him the best in his next stop - taught he was going to be a Rafalski lite: a player who started his NHL career at 26 and was solid all through out.
-
We just see things very differently in this case. In Vegas' early years they were able to succeed with a bunch of (so called) cast off and as you pointed out, with Wille it was a disaster - so it must' ve come down to the coach's ability to put it together on & off the ice. An specific example can always be found but (IMO) a coach that tries or consistently rolls four lines will only benefit a team in general. Also, our bottom 6 was eating up a good portion of our cap - I guess in this case, JB overpaid for those players or were they miscasted or both ?
