Keep all the picks, continue to build the cheap depth with talented rookies through the draft and stop signing great intangible players to term & cost. Last years Flakes should provide some caution before implementing an aggressive offseason strategy cause it doesn't guarantee anything. Probably, it would be more prudent to see what system Shaw can implement first before making any major roster moves at the cost of (finite) future assets.

The twins - seems to be brought in to be JB'S personal communication department and more importantly - another voice outside of parrots JB had surrounded himself.
-
Imo, if JB was able to acquire McD - the team would still struggle to win unless the goaltending is good to elite due to the system & deployment that Green & friends were implementing. If you look at the teams that made the conference finals, the staff has a good mix of old with the new on their staff (the new being an ex NHL player that played a loooong time in the NHL: Richardson (Habs) or Zettler (Tampa) or Shaw vs the Baumer types); i am really looking forward to what Shaw can do with this roster.

Good take ! Imo, the tax discrepancy between teams will only widen moving forward cause some of these provinces/states are in trouble. At this point, the model of having (so called) small market teams (like Tampa) being able to win/compete for a cup is working and it makes the league look good - these reason are perhaps the leagues biggest reasons for not taking this issue on cause at the end of the day most high tax jurisdiction like Vancouver, Toronto and NY are still making boat loads of money; whereas, teams like Tampa or Arizona and so on - its either feast or famine. Imo, it only takes one of big market team to start making a big stink to get the snowball rolling (imagine the PR nightmare of the Haves vs the Have nots) cause some of these states/province are not doing too well and it is just a matter of time before the bottom line of these big market teams starts getting affected. My main point about, ex first line players is, that they are able to provide more value on the ice - only if they are willing to accept the role and willing to sign a short & cheap deal to win with a young core. With hindsight, JB (moving forward) can perhaps look into this strategy as a short term solution to fill the mid to bottom six of the roster, if the youths are not ready to play those (hard) minutes. Imo, the best way to bring in the youths is to play them with legit minutes and showcase them for the fans as a treat - these young players are hungry and giving them a short leash (as Green tends to do) hinders there development with the team cause it forces them to play cautiously to get minutes; unless (ofcourse) the player does an EP or Hogz (as a more recent example): by earning the spot & minutes from day one and removing the option to sit him away from Green.

Regardless, of the process the figure against the Canucks is having a real affect on the team, whereas, with Fla & NJ the value is very minimal. Good thing, this coming season is the last year of the penalty and we can move on from Loungo. Bottom line: the league could had just closed the loop and moved on but Bettman decided to remind everyone who's boss.

If they remain hot and the bounces continues to go there way then they will have a good chance. The team is built on a good goaltending performance.and coached to grind it out with the other team; although, if the Bolts take advantage of there chances (by scoring first) then this will be a short series (just like how the Canucks beat the Blues in last years playoffs). Imo, the Habs is playing a very similar system to the NJ Devils championship teams: well coached defensively, stud defenseman(s) and elite goaltending. These games will come down to who will score first, which makes the least mistakes and which goalie will make the right save at the right time.

Good points ! Imo, long term the Canucks are better built to compete cause of Demko - a (youngish) goalie they can build around. In a few years, JM, Price and Hellybuck will be well into there thirties with a (still) high cap hit; although, some Laffs fans are starting to hype Wall as there franchise goalie of the future. The cap mismanagements by Dubas is the very opposite of JB - atleast, with the Laffs, a majority of there cap is going to core players, whereas, with JB, a good portion is going to (often injured) complementary type players. Hopefully, JB can continue to evolve and will have a long term approach during this offseason. One thing, that I like with Dubas is the signings of ex first line players (Thornton & Spezza) to cheap & short term deals - very similar to the Habs with Staal (traded for) & Perry. Due to the cap, the most difficult job for a GM's is how to keep a cup contender roster intact. The Cali advantage is perhaps starting to disappear due to the tax situation in Cali (one of the states with the highest exodus in the US); but these millionaires & so on, have access to the best so it might not be a factor at the end of day (?). The league should really do something about the tax difference between countries & states; unfortunately, for Vancouver it will not happen cause Vancouver is considered to be a rich team/market. From the start it was an uphill battle and with hindsight, it would had been prudent to trade assets then play & showcase the future; very similar to what teams like the Av's would tend to do in a losing season. Preferably, all the FA's walk; and for the nostalgic crowd they can sign Edler to play in Abby. As a Canuck fan perspective - all the Canadian teams are good hands.

I will do my deep dive into it then - thanks for the recap (no pun intended) of the teams. Teams affected by the cap recapture penalty: Florida - 1+ million for one more year NJ - 250 K for four more years LA - currently nothing Canucks - 3+ million for one more year It seems the Canucks is the one team that have really felt the brunt of the penalty. I remembered reading somewhere that the Devils did some dealing to with the league to make the amount irrelevant.

Mostly agree but only the Canucks are being penalized with cap recapture penalty. Other teams were able to make a deal with the league office to avoid the penalty (although, I haven’t really looked too deep on this issue but from the surface only the Canucks are being penalized). It would be interesting to see, if the league will close this loop hole (?). Thanks Loungo, the greatest REGULAR SEASON goalie in Canucks history.

Good take and mostly agree, the x factor with Anaheim & LA (imo) will be there cap space and it will be just in time (two years at most) for when there young talents are just getting there feet wet. Also, both teams have good GM’s in charge with Mclleland in LA. I wonder how fickle the (spoiled) Vegas fans will be but McPhee is a long time GM; although, experience can only take you so far cause not all situations are exactly the same. Laffs, Flakes and Deadmonton are starting to stale (despite the young talents in there rosters) - imo; and it would be interesting to see if any of there stars will stay as they head into there prime. I hope the Canucks don’t have the same experience as Calgary with there version of an aggressive offseason. Preferably, the tweaking in the staff and the addition of the twins should be there biggest moves and the roster tweaking can wait after a year with Shaw. Hope they keep there picks for this years draft cause in a cap world that is the best way win to build cheap talented depth rather than overpaying in FA & trades. If the Canucks sticks with a patient approach, we can all watch the Abby team compete while the big club learns how to win with the young core. No more of these overpaid signings for mentoring reasons; and if it is necessary, play the future then hire ex NHL players as coaches for that reason or/and pursue ex first line players that can actually mentor our young core from experience to cheap & short term deals.
-
Too late for the latter cause outside of Shaw it still seems to be the Green & friends show. Tampa will be in for a tough series against a Habs team that is built & coached to grind it out with the backing of elite goaltending. On paper, it seems like it is going to be a good final series - the champ vs a very confident & red hot challenger.
-
California teams are probably a year/two of bottoming out away from icing a young competitive team - imo. SJS is not as far ahead as LA & Anaheim which has been rebuilding for a few years now; although, LA unlike Anaheim kept there big contracts but in a year or two (inline with the Canucks) most/all of there big contracts will be off the books - cap space galore for both. Vegas & Calgary after an aggressive offseason, seems to be retooling or rebuilding. As for Deadmonton they just need a goalie to build around (for starters) cause the team has enough talent to make the playoffs. Looking into Hollands' tenure with Deadmonton: he seems to have a had Bergevin version of trading an unknown lottery ticket (Sergachev), were he traded John Marino to the Pens for a 6th round pick (hoping JB will not make the same mistake with OJ).
-
Hope your right - fingers crossed cause the off season is just about to start. What is your take on the addition of the Sedins ?
-
The Habs success is probably affecting Aquaman right now - hopefully it’s a positive one right before the roster tweaking start or the aggressive offseason. Imo, the Canucks haven’t been rebuilding but more like, retooling - based on the signings & trades
-
You area devaluing those players tooooo much - combined they have 49 yrs of hockey experience and don’t forget about the great intangibles they added to the team. It is obvious that they were needed despite the fact that they miss a lot of games due injuries (or uselessness in LE case) they’re mentoring & sheltering the young core helped in there development to be champions.

[Report] Kraken name Dave Hakstol as head coach

I get it; just ascerting that Vegas is not a traditional hockey market and floundering from the get go (once the nostalgia is gone), the NHL would have another Yotes or Panthers but ultimately with Seattle, it will come down to the owners & Francis, on how they will go about there business.
