Imo, his greatest strategy is to roll four lines which keeps the whole roster (very) engaged and every player motivated to buy in. Perhaps (a big reason) why he was able to be successful in Vegas with a bunch of so called cast-offs (?). If Shaw is able to manifest that great interview on to the ice (with the help of the other coaches) then this offseason is already a win.

[Signing] Sharks sign Jonathan Dahlen
ShawnAntoski replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Ditto, he still has to prove himself in the NHL. -
Pass: acquiring him will deplete the team of there depth in future assets and (also) cap space. Preferably, if the team is spending cap it would be in FA and not paying with unknown lottery tickets like: prospects & draft picks; which are a big part of the teams (cheap) depth. Plus, no guarantee he will do well with Greens system perhaps better to see what Shaw can do with the team first before acquiring any (major) pieces.

Somewhat agree on most points, especially about the importance of goaltending in the game of Hockey. There are three teams that I can remember that won the cup based (mostly) on goaltending: 93 Habs led by playoff MVP winner, Patrick Roy (last Canadian team to win a cup), Devils with Brodeur and (to a lesser extent) the Blues. These teams were built to grind it out defensively and solid goaltending with the guidance of a defensive minded coach: Burns for the Habs and three for the Devils (Lemaire, Robinson and Burns). It is not impossible but it is tough to do, it will take the whole team buying into the system and a coach to put it all together in the ice. Imo, when it come to toughness, it is better to go about with a team approach: from the staff, that coaches the team to be hard on the puck and the players - were even the stars are not afraid to get dirty cause it is all about sending the right message (especially, in the playoffs). I get your point cause in 94, it seems that both game 6 & 7 was managed to have the team of destiny win the cup; and from my experienced, this type of game managing is nothing new outside of NA pro sports were it is more obvious.

[Report] Canucks announce coaching staff updates

Ditto on most points - especially, with personnel being re signed for nostalgic or great intangibles reasons cause as proven by the Shaw signing mentoring doesn’t have to come from expensive forwards that are mostly good at face offs on the ice. Preferably, all the FA’s walks unless they are willing to take league min & less ice time; looking forward to what Shaw can accomplish with this group cause we already know what to expect from the rest of the Staff. With hindsight, it would had been prudent to play & showcase the future in this losing season - imo. -
At what point do the bruins blow it up?
ShawnAntoski replied to UKNuck96's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Imo, after this or next season they will be tanking and fighting for that top 3, with some high end talent entering the draft. Also, they will be selling hard - maybe but good chance they will tanking. -
[Rumour] Seth Jones to test FA

Good chance, that one day he will realize all the lost opportunities. -
Defensive trends in the league, and the Canucks plan
ShawnAntoski replied to D.B Cooper's topic in Canucks Talk
I agree and hopefully JB will continue to evolve and used his experience with the Bruins cup win to set the next trend. Not confident about the potential roster tweaking this offseason based on JBs history in the offseason. Perhaps Aquaman can start a hindsight department or just like Green, JB should look at changing his AGM's -

The Laffs needs to sign a Sumo wrestler to a cheap 10yr contract to play net and that should solve there goaltending problem; while Dubas continues to pay the four headed monster with 50% of the teams cap... -

Yeah perhaps they should look into just putting football players on skates; who cares about coaching; and just put a sumo wrestler in net - guaranteed cup winner. Or make this guy the coach - woo-hoo! I wonder what would had happened during the 2011 Sedin vs Marchand match, if Ric Flare was our coach - good chance the Canucks would had thrown everything at the Bruins to send the right message ? -

Hockey requires a more team approach to winning (cause of the requirement for a goalie); unlike Basketball were one/two player(s) can be a difference maker to winning a championship. Those players you mentioned are not goalies. -

Good take, probably something to consider when discussing these topics are: what teams are making the playoffs and how the Zebras are managing the playoffs games but the x factor of a lights out goaltending performance paired with a good/great defensive coach can win a cup - 1993 Habs (Canada's last cup). Currently, it seems the Tampa model is the trend to win the cup cause they are the champs; and perhaps when they get dethrone the new trend will be based on the new champ ? -

Good take and with hindsight, Murray seems to had regressed (since being traded to Ottawa) and MAF is still contributing to Vegas' cup chase (in there short history) Imo, MAFs' presence on & off the ice has contributed a great deal to Vegas' early success - would be interesting to see if Lehner can fill that role when his contract is done. MAF was not protected cause of his contract and Murrays hot start to his career (like Binnington) justified moving on from an expensive MAF - one seems to had cooled off, whereas, MAF is still performing. With hindsight, it was more of a business decision for Rutherford rather than personnel. -
Ditto and hindsight has proven that the Gentleman’s type of hockey can only (at most) lead to trophies in the regular season were the Zebras are very active at being game managers. In the playoffs, declaring war is the mentality needed for playoffs success but the biggest X factor is the goalie performance; as proven by Greens (very) flawed system were a consistent good to great performance can still lead to wins; at the cost of wear & tear on the goaltender. Edlers’ non response reminded me of the 2011 series were the Bruins (really) amped up there douchery (on & off the ice) after the Marchand & Sedin incidence. That bewildered look on Marchands’ face due to the non response of Sedin is hard to forget and watching it live didn’t help.

Defensive trends in the league, and the Canucks plan
ShawnAntoski replied to D.B Cooper's topic in Canucks Talk
Imo, just like the Laffs & Deadmonton in the North division, once they find a goalie to build around with all that talent the team will be very competitive - Pittsburgh had MAF in net when they won 3 cups. Would be interesting to see how Sakic will keep all that talent together cause Makar is an RFA & Landeskog is a UFA ? -

I would argue, that it would be good to include the Coaching staffs of the teams you mention and how they use personnel cause just look at Schmidts’ performance or Tanev with the Flakes. Glad for the Shaw hiring and especially, hearing in the interview were (paraphrasing) he indicated that it is the staffs job to (mostly) adjust with roster/player rather than the expensive route of looking for perfect players to fit in a system. Imo, JB can acquire McD and he will just be misused by the previous staff deployment & usage - hopefully, Shaw can deliver and be a difference maker based on that great interview. -

I get it; and i still would pass and give the Internal options a shot with Shaw first before before breaking the &^@#ing bank for Cernak. Preferably, I hope the Staff figures out there side first before any (major) roster tweaking takes place. Looking forward to what Shaw can do. -

I get it and we will just have to wait & see how the season goes; and the roster tweaking is just about to start - fingers crossed. Perhaps Shaw will suggest to bring in someone he is familiar with ? -

Yeah, hoping the interview can be manifested on the ice but there is always the human ego - still hoping that the staff can perform as advertised and the players buy in (?).
