Just basing the opinion on Crosbys' contact history; and his current contract seems to have similar traits compared to it: high value deals with the added years to keep the yearly cap hit below his market value. Good chance, he signs a very similar deal in his next contract and it will perhaps (like Crosby) be his last contract as he retires' with the same club that drafted him. https://www.capfriendly.com/players/sidney-crosby Ofcoure, I am speculating but there is a good chance he signs a very similar deal cause players like the MacKinnons'/Crosbys' have additional sources of incomes outside of there salary.

Yeah, I like these discussions myself.
-
It would still be a high value contract with the added year or two to keep the yearly cap hit low (very similar to Crosbys' deals); I wonder what it would take for Makar and Landeskog to sign ?
-
Good points cause (imo) how he keeps all this talent together in a cap world will (more so) determine his legacy as a GM. So far, most of his moves has helped the team (and not hurt them) cause his cap management(s) has been decent. Lets see if he can continue to make trades like the Duchesne and Barrie trade to extend there window with this core group. This coming offseason, they have Landeskog & Makar as major pieces needing a contract - very interesting to see how he handles it compared to our offseason; and in the home front, it is good to hear the rumours that the Canucks are looking to sort out the staff with some veteran presence before making any moves in the roster. Sidenote: with the Barrie trade, Sakic seems to had lost some value as Barrie got closer to FA.
-
You are entitled to your own evaluation of JB and we can agree, that his cap mismanagements cannot be compared to how Sakic has handled the Avs cap.
-
Watching the game and enjoying this series alot - imo, the team with the goalie that performs the best will win this series.
-
Yeah, Sakic definitely benefitted from the previous GM; his drafting has been decent but his trading and signings have been good. Although, with the cap - his hardest task (ultimately) will be keeping that talent together; and his strategy of not overspending on complementary players & with the constant in flows of young cheap talent has beniffted them so far. Lets see how long he keeps this current window open before, he tears it down to transition to the next group - it would be interesting to see how he does it with the draft rules being so different & the secret lottery. With hindsight, JB in FA has been bad and in trades its been getting better but this offseason moves will determine alot about the team moving forward.
-
Yeah, JB inherited some major mismanagements from Gillis: bad drafting which meant no succession plan and bad contracts; whereas, Sakic benefitted from the previous GMs' draft: Duchesne & Landeskog (although, he was already part of the team in a different capacity). With hindsight both GM inherited very different situations but given the yearly records of there teams both GMs' seems to have different philosophies with asset managements depending on what the team is doing in the given year: contending or not; Sakic seems to sell out in a losing season..

Thanks - it seems with the constant tweaking of the draft rules and the secret draft lottery, tanking only guarantees a higher percentage of drafting in the top 3 since the lottery is only for the top 3. With more rule changes coming hopefully this will be the last time we see the usual suspects of: Buf, NJ, and OTT drafting top 3 (?). With JB's drafting record it would make sense to increase the percentage of being able to draft a top 3 player but the biggest thing to consider when tanking (imo) comes down to the talent in the draft - especially on the top end but this market (imo) will not accept a tanking team due to the stigma of a losing culture or perhaps our close proximity to Deadmonton has something to do with this stigma (?). Also, the biggest x factor is the staff cause it is there job to put it all together on the ice.

Sorry, auto type - meant surmise your point

Reading the back and forth (not the whole thing) - can you your point ?
-
Yeah, Green seems to be the only one that benefitted from the subpar assistants - hopefully by hiring veteran assistants (as potential replacements for Green) it will (also) allow Green to continue evolving, as well. Perhaps figuring out the coaching staff and the schemes (first) would be a prudent initial move in this offseason before anymore roster tweaking; just look at Schmidts’ performance in Vegas vs Canucks or Tanev with the Flakes.
-
Ditto - Vegas in last years playoff, took advantage of Baumers'.
-
Yeah, Ham & Schmidt would be able to offer those insights that might help management look in a different direction rather than more roster tinkering - perhaps cheaper to higher veteran coaches for mentoring reasons rather than overpaying a veteran player for the same reason(s).
-
Yeah, he was given a legit chance but no dice
-
Yeah, perhaps during the exit interviews they were able to offere a different POV ?
-
Hopefully, this is what aggressive offseason meant. Maybe Schmidt, offered some perspective from his POV of the difference in systems ???
-
Same; and to many moving parts for one person to take all the blame/credit but that is the nature of the job/business.

[GDT] NHL Draft Lottery, June 2nd @ 4 pm on Sportsnet

Yeah, two 1st OA’s in the past year -
Probably the same can be said about JB getting better assistants to continue to evolve as a GM ?
-
Good point but Green was signed to a multi year; probably first year Green gets a pass and IF Mueller is brought in this year he will have a year to asses the system & roster.
-
Hope not at those cost
-
Yeah, (been saying for awhile now) that in this losing season it would had been prudent to play & showcase the future - over now. Despite the staffs, deployment of a veteran laden line up for most of the season - it still turned out to be a losing season.
-
Good points and it seems Dubas is trying hard to make a name for himself. At the very least, I do like his signings of ex first line players as mentoring type players to low cost & short term deals (700k per year) - that can actually mentor from real experience and are not just good at face offs. Also, despite the cap mismanagements with there four headed monsters (close to 50% of there cap), at least most of the cap is spent on core pieces & not bottom 6 mentoring type players. As a Nucks fan, they are in good shape moving forward; just hoping JB continues to evolve and learn from past mistakes.
-
Yeah, they seem to identify and accept a losing season early on and makes the necessary moves for long term gain; probably a reason, why MacKinnon is willing to sign long term cause he believes what Sakic is selling & doing - yearly improvements is really a good indicator rather done being stuck in no mans land of being a middle of the pack type team; hope JB will continue his drafting mojo.
