[Report] Jim Benning to return for next season
ShawnAntoski replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Good news if true, but disconnect his phone when FA starts and Aquaman should hire a team president that can work with JB... -
Yeah, hindsight had not been kind to most of JBs' signings but the bottom 6 players &.agents are loving it when santa JB is on the line. Would hope JB can look at what the Laffs are doing by signing former first line players to cheap & short term deals that can actually mentor from actual experiences as top line players; with the added bonus of not just being good at face offs.
-
Hope this is just a rumour would rather have players that has some bite in them when pushed rather than (we all know & remember). If it did happen and they are able to have a positive affect then hindsight will prove this was a good hire.
-
Yeah but drafting the young core instead of trading for them should give JB some leeway for now. Although, if he continues this trend of overpaying for (great) intagibles and nostalgic reasons it perhaps would be prudent to look for a new GM & AGM'S (Gear & Weisbrod).

Predict The Score Contest: VAN @ CGY May 19th 2021
ShawnAntoski replied to goalie13's topic in Canucks Talk
Greens last chance to pad his stats and ensure our spot in the 8 to 15 range in the draft; Green will want to win this game and thr Flakes doesnt want to go any lower in the draft 3-1 Canucks Miller GWG Calgary BB last goal of season. -
Honest Conversation With Those Who Still Support Management

I edited my response to you; to recap, I had been a fan since the 80’s and not too long ago there was a Laffs troll roaming this forum - I always call out any suspected trolls. We are just all fans of the Canucks and now that you had (rudely) provided some context then I apologized for my assumption No name calling - wasn’t hard ! -

The name calling at the beginning just confirmed it (to me); if you wanted an honest conversation then you could had just provided more context in a better manner. For some context: I had been a fan since the 80’s and there was a Laffs fan troll that use to roam this forum not too long ago - didn’t mean to offend. edited -
Yeah, the morale victory fans that considers tanking as a losing strategy rather than a prudent move in a losing season for (potentially) long term gain - good thing JB has hit in the draft by drafting a top 3 talent (with hindsight) in a lower draft spot and I hope he continues if the team goes on to win these last two (meaningless) All Star games. Imo, I assume a majority of the fans (most people I know and had spoken with as a baseline) would rather see the team during seasons like these to pontentially get the best chance to draft an impactful player. Also, the added bonus of picking high in the first round also mean the team will be drafting higher in the other rounds.

Yeah, all three went for market value when they signed there contracts - close to 50% of there cap are tied up to four players. Although, I would give Dubas some credit in the way he fills his roster to complement the teams four headed monster cause (recently) it seems he has started signing former top liners (Thornton & Spezza) to short & low cost contracts (700 k each) to complement his core. As former, top line players they can actually mentor from actual experience as top liners there core with the added bonus of still being productive on the ice rather than just face offs; also Simmonds at 1.5 per is not a bad contract. Hope moving forward, JB would stop overpaying for great intangibles and (in some cases) nostalgia when it comes to filling/complementing the core - at the very least, with the Laffs most of there money is actually spent on core type players and not on support/complementary type players - there goalie situation though, is why they will always be pretenders (imo) and with there cap, they would be hardpressed to sign a legit goalie, unless they (get lucky) in the draft or sign a vet to a cheap deal then that goalie goes on to have a good year (like Smith with Deadmonton).
-
Yeah, Linden was not a bad consolation price after missing on Modano. That Matthews draft had alot of teams (including Deadmonton, who drafted McD the year before) tanking hard to draft Matthews and I taught we were too - until the team went on a VERY (familiar) late season winning streak which dropped us to 3rd (based on the standings) and then Bettmans (rigged) lottery pretty much sealed the deal to our intended spot at #5. After the disappointment of dropping to fifth, I was happy that Deadmonton had dropped as well - getting greedy but they would probably still be in the same state as a team, even if they had drafted Matthews cause Draistl is a very good Matthews comp (imo); due to the state of there goaltending.
-
Good memory ! I dont neccessary think it was a majority of the fans perhaps the vocal few and the toxic local media trying to sell a spin.
-
Hope that JBs' draft mojo will continue, if the team is drafting in those spots. Added bonus of drafting high in the first round is the team also gets to draft higher in the other rounds...
-
Yeah, I was going to mention that but our offical spot was # 2 cause it was just a (very important) part of the deal with Atl to make it all work. In the end, ATL chose first (Patrik Stefan)

Honest Conversation With Those Who Still Support Management

You mean mentoring vets who are good at faceoffs and not scoring. Based on your crude summary of history - it seems obvious the team is doing the tango (one step forward and steps back); this season will be the same a high draft pick but not top 3 for winning meaningless all star games so Green can once again pad his stats. Also, I dont blame Aquaman for chasing playoff $ but this cycle of mediocrity have been going on for a few years now with no real improvements on yearly basis; except for the joy of watching the young core develope and the anxious anticipation of potentially competing in the near future the trend line has been mostly flat. -

Based on his handle he is just trolling - he could care less about the Canucks and JB. -
Canucks have never had a 1 OA pick and it looks like we will miss it again this year cause of potentially winning these last two (meaningless) all star games. Sidenote; our expansion cousin have had three and it looks like they will be getting there fourt - Powers or Clarke with Dahlin.
