  1. Both Nonis and JB were first time GMs: one was internal and JB an external hire. Nonis seemed conservative (imo) compared to JB or his mentor & predeccessor Brian Burke, when it comes to trades and FA but he did leave Gillis alot of pieces to work with (you can search for it yourself). He was a Canuck GM for three years and missed the playoffs twice, then got fired and quickly joined Brian Burke in Toronto afterwards. As a long time fan, Nonis' most memorable move was the Loungo trade and Mitchell signing. Personally, Iam more excited about the JB era cause of the young core & propects he was able to accumulate and develope - alot more to be excited about with JB or (in your case) complain about.
  2. Anyone willing to bring in the Burke, Quinn, Nonis and etc tenures as part of this conversation ???
  3. The OP, has chosen a side - fire JB and the only solution it seems is to hire him as GM (re hire - is that you MG, LOL !). Regardless, I am enjoying the back and forth between Canuck fans of both eras.
  4. Round and round we go ! Oh well, the doldrums of a quiet offseason.
  5. Ditto, some context: Gillis obviously was going all in and was perhaps planning a complete rebuild when that group wins the cup. The Bruins winning the cup was probably not in Gillis' plan and when the 2011 finals went against him he seems to have no cheap succession plan due to a weak prospect list he has created. The author has clearly chosen a side - wants JB gone for past mistakes and quickly disregards Gillis mistakes that JB inherited; the biggest of which was leaving a prospect cupboard bare. It took JB, awhile to fill that cupboard and to finally have a team filled with his players & prospects. As stated the team is trending in the right direction and starting next year some of these bloated contract will be off the books. Even with context some of these contracts can be justified in supporting the young & inexperienced core. Iam much more interested, in the contracts that JB & "his cronies" (which includes AGM and head legal counsel - Chris Gear) will be able to negotiate with next years RFA's. If the team is trending downward, the OP would probably have more merit. I do agree that it can be frustrating with JB, when looking at his past moves but when you look at where the team is trending - it still seems to indicate a plan was actually in place with a solid succession plan through the draft & developement to support it (but who really knows what is going to happen in the future). Of course, having a plan is very different to the actual execution of it cause no one has the benefit of a 'reset button' or hindsight. Doing a quick google, it seems to indicate that our current owners had never had to go through a complete rebuilt during there tenure - 'this' was probably why there was resistance to doing a rebuild and instead comprised on a retool. Also, inheriting a weak list of prospect(s) meant JB had to create succession plan by filling our team with talented & cheap prospect(s) in the short term to support the age group of Bo (the core at that time). Imo, the author of this thread cannot be convinced to see it any other way and trying to do so will only lead to a discussion with no end - 'this' perhaps is the real reason for this thread ? At the very least, it is nice to see so many passionate Canuck fans still supporting the team - despite the bumbling GM & "his cronies". GCG!
  6. Ditto, the creator of this thread seems to believe there is a manual on how to be a GM in the NHL. Even the so called, "experienced" GM had to go through growing pains to evolve and these GM's are not readily made available by there respective teams for good reasons. Personally, the best approach (as fan) is to look at the general direction of the team rather than nitpick on past mistakes (using hindsight) to frame a narrative. Atleast, name an alternative to support your argument - unless the alternative you are suggesting is yourself !?
  7. Despite the growing pains associated with our imperfect GM - hindsight - the team is still trending in the right direction and just like any journey there will be speed bumps or detours along the way. With hindsight, JB does deserved the criticism but with some context some of the decision can also be defended. Moving forward, I am more interested to see, if JB & "his cronies" are actually evolving into becoming better decision makers for the Canucks cause our young core are also evolving and they will require the right support to compete at a high level. Iam not really buying your grim outlook of the teams future cause there is still enough talent in the team to be competitive. In a couple of years the bloated contract will be off the books and this roster will look very different; hopefully JB will be given a chance to win with his core. Did a quick google on Chris Gear and his credentials are excellent. Personally, I would still prefer our bumbling (first time) GM heading to the draft with his eye for talent cause a teams' superstar/core players should mainly be acquired in the draft (especially, in a cap world). If CG becomes GM, (I would assume) his tenure would perhaps be more comparable to when we had Gillis: were trading and FA would be the main source of talent cause his drafting record was atrocious - hindsight. JBs' background is from being a scout and CG is more so from a lawyer & business perspective - like Gillis who was an agent/lawyer. Perhaps he would be a better Team President rather than GM ? Just curious, you had mentioned Chris Gear as an internal option but you never mentioned any external option - any suggestion ?
  8. This seems very vague and incomplete (perhaps on purpose) cause it does NOT include compared to who ? My answer: compared to other Canucks GM, I would say JB is the best Canuck GM cause despite not having a pick higher than 5th OA he was able to draft our two superstars instead of trading for them and he was also able to build ul our prospect list to a legit one.
  9. Ottawa going for it for the next few years while there best players are in there elc then when they get too expensive they will be traded and the rebuilding starts again.
  10. Good points but I didn't really look at the details. My main point, is that with the cap, teams in a cap crunch cannot really get of players with out given up assets/cap space or both to gain cap relief.
  11. Just like us but with less talented players eating up a chunk of our cap, we have to pay a team to get these players of our books; Tampa will be paying with assets: draft picks, cap space and prospects/players to sign these RFA's. They draft well and even if they lose some of these players resulting in some regression next year; in a few years they will be back to competing. Hope JB, has drafted enough NHL player and continues to identify cheap talents, to get us in a similar compete cycle.
  12. As a Canuck fan, I would argue the Laffs are fine and seems to be headed in the right direction of perpetual mediocrity due to four players eating 40+ % of there cap (based on this years cap limit). Probably, why JB sold on this years draft to give himself a brake from having consecutive years of talented players on expiring elc cause in this cap world and if a team is drafting well every year, that team will eventually lose a young talented player: Tampa (this year), Winnepeg and etc. Hopefully, one of QH or EP will sign a bridge or contracts very similar to MacKinnon/Crosby.
  13. This will come down to JB and the teams ability to sell a vision. Perhaps contracts very similar to Crosby & McKinnon - high value with extra years to bring down the annual cap hit. At this point, the Laffs seems to be trending in this direction with exception of Stanley cups; there young stars wanted to get paid before the team has even won a cup.
  14. Once JV, realize that he is running out of time to maximize his earning potential as an Nhl pro, he will develope enough for that one last big chance of a big payday - JM. Perhaps best to hold on to him after this contract and sign him short term with the intention of trading him - imo.
  15. He will ride this contract to the last year, in which, he will have his best year as a Canuck....
  16. Imo, JB has used this FA period to clean up some of his cap mismanagements and there will be next years (better) free agency class. A few more years, these players with there bloated contracts will be gone - unless, JB & the owners decide to open there wallet again and overpay; hopefully, JB avoid making his past mistakes (hindsight).
  17. Yeah Schmidt, perhaps gave Vegas a limited list of teams and Vancouver made the best offer, in terms of cap space....
  18. His contract is almost done and it seems to be right in line with this teams compete window. Not sure what kind of a locker room presence he has but I hope he doesn't win with this group cause (with hindsight) the only bright side, I can see that he has brought to the team, is that his contract has (hopefully) taught JB to stop overpaying for player at/over 30 that had a career year (or a few years prior) heading into Free Agency; glad they walked away from JMs' demand. On the ice - no need to elaborate or waste words cause it is fairly obvious... I would speculate, that in his last year - there is a very good chance - LE will have his best year as a Canuck; hopefully, JB can trade him for some asset(s); i would take one/two sevenths for him and celebrate.
  19. Yeah, the price in cap cost and assets is too much for very similar players. Also, agree that his relatioship with the Jets, seems very similar (to a small extent) to the situation with the Canucks and JV; perhaps 1 for 1 but pass for now !?
  20. Ditto, very similar players but Laine will cost more in cap space to keep and assets to acquire if traded for.
  21. Great points. Wpg is a small market team and (mainly) due to there great drafting they had been able to compete at a high level but the cap, will eventually catch up and they wont be able to keep everyone. Imo, they will be force to make a deal concerning Laine or keep a VERY talented (but one dimensional) player with rumoured motivation issue(s) eating up a huge part of there cap (unlike, EP who seems to be very self driven and actually tries to play a two way game). If I am GM, I would wait for his contract to end next year and make a good offer in FA cause he would cost alot of cap space regardless of how he is acquired - why help out the Jets with assets (unless a sign & trade deal is being talked about). He is signed for one more year and Cheveldayoff doesn't seemed very keen on signing and commiting longterm with a very talented but one dimensional player. Despite Boesers' (so called) issue(s) I would rather keep him cause (imo) they are both very similar but BB plays a better defensive game and his character matches well with the core. Personally, with all the uncertainties and during this part of the teams development curve, I would hope JB, stays away from acquiring Laine - at this time, unless it is in FA and he signs a contract that doesnt handcuff the teams future (high valued contract but includes more years to bring down the annual cap hit). Maybe in a few years, when the bad contracts are of the books, current prospect are no longer prospects and the team is a legit contender then perhaps circle back. Imo, at this point, Laine is not a good fit. I remeber when the Jets, lucked out in the draft to picked him (2nd OA) and we moved down to the fifth spot and drafted OJ - hindsight. Given the circumstances, OJ arriving this year seems like the best time cause his cap hit will be low (due to his lack of developement) during EP & QH first big contract and he gets an opportunity to grow with them while establishing his NHL career.
  22. Perhaps just like Brett Hull he just needs an Adam Oates to keep it simple for him. Atleast, his cap hit is well below market value - currently
