[Discussion] Do You Have the Stomach For a Rebuild?
ShawnAntoski replied to Warhippy's topic in Canucks Talk
Yzerman sold on a 25yr Mantha cause his age & salary demand, didn't fit his plans and he took, the FIRST best deal he got; a very similar decision, to CHI when they traded Dach and Debricant. It seems once committed, a team has no choice but to commit and it will come down to a patient & competent FO, with the understanding & courage to rebuild and eventually turn the page cause we had seen what a incompetent FO can accomplish with a rebuild: Oilers & Sabres. Although, both are doing well, right now; the Sabres might be better equipped to contend long term cause of their young D - and if Levi developes into a goalie, they can depend on. Perhaps their new FO, has learned some important lessons from the incompetent Botterill regime - and as one of the ever rebuilding clubs, atleast their fans can look forward to a top 3 prospect, ever so often... -
Imo, Holland was retooling but it is Yzerman, who is rebuilding and it started with the trading, of a 25yr old Mantha. Illich understood that Hollands time had come and that is why, he gave what he gave to Yzerman: a longterm contract with full support vs what Aquaman gave JR & friends - a bunch of short term deals. Yzerman has the track record with Tampa and good chance, Detroit becomes a contender before the ever retooling Canucks cause Yzerman understands, the cycles a team has to go through to win a cup, in the Cap Era vs before it, which is where Holland draws his experience from. Holland, did have a win a final cup with a team, on the backs of two late round gems: Datsyuk & Zetterberg and the team was put together before the Cap was implemented. Anyways, most of Cup Champs in the Cap era won by going through a rebuild vs constantly retooling, for a playoff spot.

To answer the OP: Aquaman doesn't have the stomach but he has a big appetite for mediocrity - cause he knows best. -
I understand the roster situation the team, is on. But our discussion was on both OEL & Myers ability to still defend effectively. We can both agree that both are overpaid but I don't agree, that both are still quality defenceman in the NHL - unfortunately their salary, dictates their ice time vs their actual performance, which is just hurting the team on the ice and from improving cause 13 million, is wasted on them. Thanks JB & Francesco

Yeah, the acquisition of Thornton (1st OA pick by Boston) to build around and some draft hits (Pavelski, Vlasic & etc), created a good core - but the same playoff chasing strategy, still netted them with no cup (PLUS a giant anchor of a contract: Karlsson) vs the teams that build up their foundation through the draft (just look at, all/most of the champs in the cap era). Detroit with Yzerman is now 3yrs in with his rebuild and it seems SJ will be starting theirs' soon. As for the Canucks, the playoff chasing strategy to NHL Purgatory remains cause Francisco is committed and he still believes he knows best - to his own peril. Been looking for a team, in the Cap era that has won a cup without doing a rebuild and I had found none, so far.
