  1. They can’t possibly be that stupid. If they thought facing Iran generated controversy for them hooboy they ain’t seen nothing yet if they schedule a match against Russia. The competitive level won’t be as high, but they’ll be able to find someone in the world I’m sure. It might be a delayed match though from the original dates.
  2. Don’t forget heat domes. Climate change is happening now. Sadly this is just the beginning. The only thing we can do is lessen the severity of impact on the future, the time to stop it has long passed.
  3. Who here takes off their shoes before entering someone’s home? I thought all people did this, but to Americans it’s apparently something no one’s ever done.
  4. Here’s how I see Chiasson: If he gives us his first part of the season game under Green for a full 82 he’s not worth a contract slot. If he gives us exactly what he did this season for a full 82 he’s an ok depth piece. If he gives us his latter season game for a full 82 with Bruce in charge he’s a steal at 800k. 7 goals in 12 games, top line minutes or not is a seriously impressive finish when we needed it most fighting for a playoff spot. We want guys on our team who can elevate their games when it’s most important. Which option is most likely? I’m guessing the last one, but he could only be the second. The first seems very unlikely. Either way he’s worth the slot and the money as far as I’m concerned. If a prospect beats him out at training camp so be it, we can trade him, send him to Abby or something else. I don’t think penciling in someone who hasn’t shown NHL level play for a roster spot in the next 82 games is a good idea unless and until that actually happens. We always get hit with the injury bug, it’s going to happen next season too. Best to be ready with a capable replacement before knowing whether a prospect can beat him out to earn the spot. Besides all that competition is good, the more guys competing, the harder they’re going to try to snag a spot on the roster.
  5. Who’s in net for Canada in the most important game of the tournament so far when we face Sweden? Thompson was incredible until that 6-3 Switzerland shellacking they gave us. Driedger hasn’t faced many shots, but hasn’t made many really good saves either. Any other goalie hasn’t seen enough play to be a viable choice. It’s obviously not ideal to question who the most important player on the team will be going into the elimination rounds, but here we are. If I’m in charge I’m probably taking Thompson. I’ll take a chance at seeing brilliance again like he did against Slovakia over a chance of seeing brilliance for the first time. Worth mentioning Switzerland won every game they played, only losing points in a shootout victory win over Germany. They have the the highest points total of any country including Finland. They’ve scored 34 goals as well, the most by any team in the tournament. The quality of competition should also count for something imo. Driedger faced Italy, Denmark and France resulting in 6-1, 2-3 and 7-1 for Canada Thompson faced Germany, Slovakia, Kazakhstan and Switzerland resulting in 5-3, 5-1, 6-3 and 3-6 for Canada So who are you picking?
  6. You’re exactly bang on the money. Overpasses act as wind tunnels that actually increases the speed of the wind and velocity of objects. When you try to squeeze fast moving air aka wind into a confined space it makes the air move faster because there’s more air pushing and trying to get through a smaller area instead of say an open field where air flow is unobstructed. Not only that, but there’s a much greater chance of a car accident from someone else driving not realizing you’ve stopped in the road. This dangerous practice stems almost exclusively from a 90’s storm chaser video where people took cover under an overpass as a tornado was coming right at them. It was tossing a van around like a toy a few hundred meters away. What that video didn’t show or explain and is likely why those people all lived through it uninjured to post the video after is the tornado in question lifted up off the ground just as it had reached them. If you look at the video closely you can tell the tornado isn’t on the ground as it hits them. They were extremely lucky. They never felt the full effects of the winds.
  7. Glad she and her uncle are ok! You are absolutely right about overpasses, they are a terrible place to take shelter in a storm. Iowa got hit by a bad Derecho in 2020 that caused $7.5B dollars in damage and that’s where I learned of the term myself, but before that I’d never heard of one either. https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2020/10/17/iowa-derecho-damage-cost/
  8. I’ve said it many times before: We take so much for granted here that 90% of people in the world have never had a chance to experience in their entire lives. We’ve got our own problems like all countries do, but we are luckier then most living on this planet.
  9. I know your tongue is firmly planted in your cheek, but there probably should be a thread dedicated to Climate Change or Extreme Weather. Is power still out for them? I’m assuming yes since outages are likely widespread. I hope you’ll manage to reach them soon and that they’re all ok!
  10. I can’t believe no one else has posted about this yet, because the destruction it wrought was severe. 1000km of damage in Ontario and Quebec. Cars were tossed, power poles were snapped, records were broken, houses were leveled. At least 9 people sadly lost their lives. A derecho for people unaware of the term is a severe band of thunderstorms that produces extremely strong downburst winds created by a cold front sweeping in, slicing through the heat and humidity that was already in place. The videos and pictures are unbelievable. Also I can’t find any dedicated charities for helping our fellow Canadians recover from this event, but if anyone finds a group or link I’ll be sure to add and donate. https://www.theweathernetwork.com/ca/news/article/derecho-leaves-behind-nearly-1000-km-of-damage-fatalities-in-wake-ontario-quebec
  11. There will always be a blood stain on this Qatar World Cup, those innocent lives lost shouldn’t be forgotten by anyone that were sadly used to create stadiums for a sport competition just for entertainment. Nor should any of the realities of whatever country is hosting or participating in a sports event be forgotten. The facts and truth must be recognized. Qatar as you say treats women horribly. There are many past atrocities committed by many other nations to their people who have hosted the tournament and many other sport competitions. We will always live in an imperfect and sometimes barbaric world. Maybe though by being there with Canadian and western democracy fans and players our ideals might start to catch on. Maybe the husband who controls his wife’s every move decides to give her some free time. Maybe that means a small move forward for the millions of people who live there. A country can’t go from horrid dictatorship straight to thriving democracy, after all we used to allow people to own Native and African American slaves in Canada. Change comes in steps, steps that may not happen if the people or leaders don’t see a different way possible. For one example on the host nation a small, but significant change was Qatar for the first time in its history sending women to compete in the Olympics. For nearly 40 years it was men only. Does that small step mean the possibility of more steps being built upon after to the benefit of women who live there? Does that initial step happen if the country isn’t allowed to participate and experience other people who don’t live under suppression? I personally feel emotionally torn on these complex questions and issues because of my strongly held values on basic human rights and equality for all. As morally reprehensible some nations are to their people though, we can’t create a better world as a species without exposing our democratic ideals to other people in different nations who have never experienced true freedom. No one ever wants or is willing to fight for something unless they know the value of what they’re missing.
  12. Agreed on both. It’s definitely not a simple issue with an easy answer, more so complex and in the grey area. That was one of the stupidest moves he made and created a much less safe world. It wasn’t perfect by any means, but it allowed people inside to monitor Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Now nobody has a clue and Iran doesn’t want to do another already difficult negotiation knowing a new president could just tear up the agreement for no reason at all.
  13. The problem with that thinking imo is that every country in the world has at one point done something to anger Canada in our history. That’s not to downplay the tragic and completely avoidable loss of dozens of innocent Canadian lives or the impact it had on their grieving families, it’s just a recognition of the reality of a world where every country does what’s best for their interests be it for the country’s, the leaders or the dictators in power. If we decided that plane being shot down or even a no dictatorship policy was a line we couldn’t cross we wouldn’t get to play against many other teams in the world for any sport. Iran has atrocious and barbaric policies and human rights violations, with that there is no doubt. So what is the proper line in the sand for us to take while also being cognizant of the reality the world is? I honestly don’t know the answer to that.
  14. A friendly welcome to another soon to be Victorian! Congrats to your son as well! There’s a surprising amount of things to do here. Anything from high end dining to skydiving to breweries (we have an insane amount, there’s a reason Victoria is considered the craft brewing capital of the world) to museums to escape rooms to trampoline parks to beaches to mountain hikes to lakes to music festivals to sports to recreation centers. We have our own local sports teams too: like the Victoria royals hockey and Victoria shamrocks lacrosse. I could go on forever listing them all, but suffice to say there’s a lot to do. More and more activities are created each and every year, sometimes places pop up out of nowhere. Our restaurant business is cutthroat, similar in per capita rate to San Francisco, many places don’t even last a year, but we’ve got some fantastic locally owned places and food truck scene. We’re a tourist town that relies on tourism for downtown businesses and government for jobs. We have cruise ships arrive daily. We’ve got a decent public transportation system and lots of bike lanes. It’s the activity level of a city with a town-like feel. There’s basically 6 degrees of separation everywhere. Every 6th person you know knows someone you know. We’re mostly newly weds or nearly deads as we like to call it lol. The weather is fairly mild, we don’t get a lot of snow and usually don’t get a ton of heat (last summer’s heat wave nothwithstanding). Langford has completely turned around from what it used to be even a decade ago. It’s a very nice place to live now and most people who are priced out of Victoria are moving there. It’s growing very fast. Victoria is most definitely not a $&!# hole, it’s got homeless people like most places and some areas are getting run down, but there’s a reason why our housing and rent prices are skyrocketing: everyone wants to live the relaxed coastal island life. You’re free to your opinion, but that is probably the thought from someone who hasn’t travelled to many other places. Or maybe someone who hasn’t ever been to the East side of Vancouver. That doesn’t mean Vancouver is a $&!# hole city though. Every city has its problems, it’s inevitable with so many people in one area.
  15. Beware: Long incoming post. I don’t like a lot of what Horgan has done or more specifically hasn’t done as premier, but on this I completely agree and I believe most BC’ers should too. There’s all sorts of problems being caused by greedy companies jacking up prices to make their shareholders (aka wealthy people who can actually afford the stock market) more money. The biggest issue for the province though is absolutely increased food costs. Not being able to afford to feed oneself or their family is a far greater issue then someone being able to afford their own personal transportation. One is needed to live and one is a luxury not afforded to the vast majority of the planet. He’s not saying that gas prices aren’t a problem, he’s saying food cost increases are a much bigger issue to his government. That should be a view everyone agrees with. This is just another case of the right drumming up already present previous issues looking for a scapegoat to point to for every problem to try to fool voters into thinking the premier caused it in order to gain power without actually thinking about what is being said. Just so someone doesn’t accuse me of being a biased lib, which will probably happen anyway: No person in any province should blame their premier for the costs of living being increased. Not Kenney, not Ford and not Horgan. The reason is solely on corporations making billions yearly who continue to jack up the prices of everything in the name of making more and more profit. Btw that Palmer person is already putting out puff pieces on Falcon. https://vancouversun.com/opinion/columnists/vaughn-palmer-falcon One by one I’ll go through his arguments that Horgan is at fault for that are either wrong or are undeterminable currently: Crime stats can’t be found for this year yet, so just because news reports of incidents are increasing doesn’t necessarily mean the actual crime rate is increasing. Thinking we didn’t have housing issues before Horgan is wrong. Thinking we didn’t have doctor shortages before Horgan is wrong. Thinking we didn’t have long medical wait times before Horgan is wrong. Those are all decade+ long issues we’ve had and placing blame on the current leader of any province isn’t looking at the full picture. Some things that do help keep things more affordable are listed among this spreadsheet CBC made of every promise Horgan made in his election campaigns: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/1iaM2HULJmh1OlqnFFzvEJocoBFXiMimk8F2tUC0j6U4/htmlview A few highlights for those who don’t want to scroll through: MSP premiums eliminated Increased minimum wage to $15 Reducing/Freezing ferry rates Cap on tuition fees Cutting small business tax rates Increased support for elderly renters Removed PST on electricity Reinvested in co-op housing Increased disability and income assistance by $100 per month Some others not listed: Capping rent increases at 1.5% per year https://news.gov.bc.ca/releases/2021AG0130-001748 12,500 spaces for $10 a day childcare by end of 2022 https://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/more-childcare-10-dollar-spaces 22% of 114,000 promised affordable housing units completed or initiated of the 10 year promise. https://www.policynote.ca/housing-promises/ I’m not saying Horgan’s the best premier ever, nor that he has done the best he can because he’s disappointed me on some things and could be doing more on a lot of issues, but he has done things that help make life more affordable for all and he is right to say food costs increasing are more important then gas costs increasing.
  16. Regardless of what happens with Miller Bo’s definitely not getting traded. What would that say to Hughes, Petey and Demko if we traded our captain? He also always steps up when we need it most in a game, regular season or playoffs. More often then not he carries the team on his back. He’s worth every penny.
  17. If I never have to see those godawful ugly helmets again it’ll be too soon.
  18. I had hoped he’d be able to cross the 1000 game mark, but if he decides to hang it up he’s had one hell of a career.
  19. Even if it is the refs fault for allowing it and Embiid is using that to his advantage (which you’re absolutely right, it’s on the refs) I can still be critical of a player choosing to take advantage. You don’t see Dončić or Giannis or any of those elite players falling down with a slight breeze. He can choose not to fall down, that’s a choice he can make.
  20. Why would we use Arizona as a valid comparison for a players capability? The stats for this year already showed Garland was a better producer then at any time with the Coyotes. What does Boeser do well at other then scoring goals? Is he a set up man? Is he a sniper? Is he a PP specialist? Is he a defensively stout offensive player? Is he a skating behemoth? Is he a chance creator? I’m not trying to rip on Boeser. He’s got some good skills, but I don’t see anything else to his game other then a pure goal scorer. And when he’s not scoring what does he do well for us? Maybe I’m missing something after watching him these past seasons, but I don’t see anything else.
  21. I doubt they’d do that, but I agree something needs to be done. I’ve got no issue with a player falling if he’s hit hard or tripped, but this Philly bs that refs hand the advantage to after a player being lightly touched has got to stop. It diminishes the game of basketball with wins basically by default.
  22. Canada vs Slovakia. Holy cow what a game! Battle of the goalies, that was incredible to watch. It’s now Thompson’s net to lose. The score didn’t do Husk justice. He made some insane saves. After the 4th Slovakia basically gave up, but the first half of the game they pushed Canada to the limit. Fantastic hockey. The Superman save just encapsulated this match perfectly. Take a look at this beauty:
  23. Now that’s an interesting idea. A 1 year show me deal to decide whether to sign him long term or trade. With Miller at only $5m this season it could work out fairly well.
  24. What a cluster&^@# of a franchise. There’s far bigger issues there then the coaching. Couldn’t be happier to see a team go down the toilet.
