  1. Yeah, so far not too bad this year. For the first time in 6 years we actually addressed areas of need instead of the slew of "not bad" wingers. Now the writing is on the wall and we're going for it yet again so those moves as you stated were necessary. As such I'm keeping an open mind and will get on board with the upcoming season. Here's to hoping it works out. It's going to be tight and my belief is that next season when Myers is finally done is when we will actually see the best chance to ice a competitive team. It depends how they navigate the raises for Petey, and Hronek as well as still finding a top 4 RD to play with Hughes. The OEL buyout, and also the lack of quality wingers in the top 6 and quality in the entire bottom 6 are still obstacles to competing with the cream of the crop. When and if we rebuild I hope the franchise has finally learned some lessons about building the right way and not blowing all the cap and assets before the core is ready.
  2. Exactly, wrestling is for children. What's up for the second intermission, we bring AV back with Oscar the Grouch, Cookie Monster, and Big Bird?
  3. Unfortunately you are most likely correct. This league is hard enough without the constant waste of assets and cap. The year after this one will be our best shot. The window is tiny.
  4. Ha ha. In all seriousness I am rooting for Brock. Would love to see him rediscover his game and make a big impact this season.
  5. He comes off as overly cocky in this interview. I would only be 946% confident myself.
  6. Well you can get rid of the wingers off that list to begin with as Matthews is a Center. Also, older contracts shouldn't really be brought up. The biggest thing I notice with Matthews is that his assist totals are kind of low but actually getting better each year, which is why his point totals are lower than they could be. He's a phenomenal (60) goal scorer though, 210 lbs, and skates like the wind. That's insanely valuable. Obviously the goal scoring carries a premium but I think all these players are in and around the same value. It all depends on what teams are willing to pay and how much the extra half to a million matters to the player. As far as him regressing it looks more like his last season may have been an outlier, same as Miller, and possibly the same as Petterson. Similar to our situation I would guess we would also consider paying Petterson slightly more than market value as he also holds all the leverage. You have a good point though. $13.5 is a lot of money for a player if he's only getting 80-85 points a season. He is easily one of the best players in the league though.
  7. I don't pay attention to any of that crap or twitter, except for here when reliable sources are directly quoted. I read that earlier in this thread. The information here is usually pretty spot on but now that I look back I don't see a very reputable source. It should be Ferraro. At least the guy knows hockey and he's as passionate as you can be about hockey. He's got a pretty good humor too.
  8. I thought it was already confirmed he's doing 28 games or something, whatever his other contract allows him to do in his time off.
  9. Fair enough. Maybe you know the player better than I. He's not on the Canucks so it doesn't concern me that much. My only comment was that the table is set for him in LA if he chooses to apply himself. He has a very good opportunity there.
  10. Yeah Virtanen is far worse. I guess Kane wasn't the best example lol. He got himself kicked off teams and then grew up a bit now and has settled in.
  11. I suppose. I'm not going to write him off though. He's going from two kind of crappy hockey cities to an already good team in LA. He must know this is a career defining move. I don't think this makes him unable to play hockey at a good level. Whenever I've watched him I've been impressed with his level of play. I haven't seen him give up at all myself. He won't have anywhere to hide or run, or ask to be traded again though. It's put up or shut up. He did have 63 points in 73 games. If that's mailing it in and he actually tries he could fit in very nicely. Not to mention you have Kopitar and Doughty there to challenge his ego. This is the same thing Tkachuk did. Gaudreau told them he was not resigning, Panarin demanded a trade, Fox did it twice as well. I can't imagine a player with his skill and surrounded by good hockey people won't eventually figure it out. He did just turn 25 last month. For every Evander Kane there are many more cocky NHL kids that make some mistakes but eventually grow up along the way.
  12. I haven't really been 100% ultra focused on his career but I see this "not happy" thing as easily overblown. There is a lot of guessing and supposition going on here. Losing sucks but if he gets to be part of a team on the upswing and a winning group I don't know why he couldn't bring the best version of himself going onto his third team at the age of 25. I can't imagine he's not extremely motivated to be successful in LA. He wouldn't be the first disgruntled youngster to figure it out at this stage.
  13. Yup. Very true. Unfortunately for Canuck fans I think the table is set for PLD to be very successful. He is exactly what they needed to add to an already strong team trajectory.
  14. lol, I no longer wonder why I get into the silliest arguments with this poster. This is literally how every conversation with him goes with him and it's absolutely mind blowing. haha Imagine being a grown man and not knowing the difference between a sport and exercise.
  15. Silovs will be NHL ready at exactly 1:33 and 46 seconds PM on March 17th, 2024. This is an exact science and I have all the answers, so let me know if you have any further questions.
  16. Hoglander Blueger Podkolzin That would be a nice line to have as a natural team progression. Then you roll out Kuzmenko Petterson Mikeyhev Garland Miller Boeser in your top 6 and imo upgrade on either Garland/Beau or Boeser if possible. That gives a more realistic and even distribution of salaries with opportunities available on the wings. Meanwhile the young players are also able to contribute while striving to play higher up in the line-up. Like Tocchet says, if they can bring some enthusiasm and play the game the right way with energy it be a huge benefit for us. Of course, those two would have to be able to pot some goals.
  17. So ... replacing him with no one. Hmmm, how valuable could he have been?
  18. You misunderstand the term cap dump. Bo was expiring this year, and the Islanders were seeking his services, as evidenced by the 8 year re-signing. Since we never had to pay him this year in the first place, we haven't dumped any cap, but we are paying for Beauvillier's salary this season, which the Islanders needed us to take on in order to facilitate the trade. So that was a cap dump by definition. It really doesn't matter what we we call them though. Bo is a player the Isles wanted. Beauvillier is still a good player and we have his rights for this season. You're right it's a winger battle for sure on the Canucks. It should be fun to see who makes it when the dust settles. Beau may be better right now then Hogs and Pods, but they are both younger, cheaper, and have more potential to get better. The $3 mil difference in cap space make them better options in my humble opinion.
  19. Yeah me too. I actually really like the way he plays the game! Like you said he's got top speed. He's really prolific in his skating lanes and anticipation. He's also got enough skill that he, Petey, and Kuz look amazing when they are attacking the opposition. It's so refreshing when you can see the passes available being made in real time as you see them develop. I also really like his ability in and around the net. He's a gamer. The biggest downside is his size and lack of defensive acumen. We already have slighter and/or poor defensive players in Kuz, Miller, Boeser, Petey, and Garland. Unfortunately it doesn't leave much of a fit being we are pressed for cap space, unless we move several of these guys and/or change the make-up of the top 6. Maybe he can carve out a role in the bottom 6, but of course he didn't look great there and certainly doesn't at the $4 mil price tag. Horvat was a 40 goal scorer making $5.3 mil on an expiring contract. He was one of the best players available before the TDL, and certainly not a cap dump. He brought us a good return, which in hindsight was a great move for us considering we had no chance of re-signing him. Couldn't care less about bashing other teams or players in a vain attempt to justify the trade. Moving forward the jury is still out on who won the trade, It really matters how Hronek and even Pelikka perform, vs how Bo plays in his new home. It also remains to be seen if Beauvillier pays any dividends at all, or becomes a cap causality. We also need to see if Raty does anything at the AHL/NHL level. Next season will reveal a lot.
