Yes, a good portion of posters could see this clearly for quite a while now but management doubled down on this mess and made it even worse. It could be a long decade of pain. -

Yup, so many here tossing all the blame on one person and absolutely zero responsibility on the 23 players who actually played the games. It's absurd in this place sometimes. -

Agreed that is exactly what you want from the 4th line. Cost efficient, can play minutes, don't tilt the ice, and don't get scored on. With Hoglander though I wonder how important a bigger body is on the fourth line. I don't actually think Joshua is a fighter though is he? I think he's more of a low event player like Aman and Lazar from what I recall. -

Every time the Canucks play we'll have to re-write the rules depending on the outcome. Would that have even helped in this situation? Would they have seen the flag at center ice and stopped the play before the goal, or would they have to go back, watch the video, make the penalty call, and then erase the last 30 seconds of the game and start again? How far back could you challenge, 2 minutes, a whole period? We could make integrity of play calling the upmost of priorities but it would change the game dramatically. -

Holy crap that's a young line-up with some unproven guys. I don't even recognize a couple names. Should be a very interesting up tempo game. I wonder why the great Zac MacEwen isn't in the line-up. Oh yeah, he absolutely blows at hockey. -

Are you good with backing up the game after the fact or does the coach need to throw it on the ice and have the refs see it? Sure, I see what you are saying Deb and Hairy. I get the sentiment ... I do but this seems very reactionary based on one incident that went against your favorite hockey team. If you want to go ahead and re-write the rule books though go for it. Be my guest but it seems trivial to me. This is the NHL. It's a tough game. I don't know if you saw Sid.is.Sid's summary but it was very good. I think Hughes actually stopped the refs from calling it by getting himself back in the play, or do we think this was purposely done specifically to make the Canucks lose again? I'm just curious but do you want them to stop it every time they see blood or a player falls down ... or just 1 challenge as Hairy suggests? Is this about player safety, or us getting scored on? It was a really bad missed call but I've been watching hockey for years and years and this happens quite often. I remember one time in the playoffs a Boston guy broke his leg and continued to play for another minute on the PK ... should they have shut that down too? Where do you draw the line because every time a guy lays on the ice he could be seriously hurt. I'll tell you a broken leg is a lot more serious then a couple stiches in the face. -

Reffing, judgement, and bad calls are part of the game like missed passes and wide open nets. Unless they want to slow every game down to 4 hours and double check every time someone falls down, or gets a boo boo. Which they could do but it sure would tarnish the image of hockey being a tough game. Poor calls and how you adapt is crucial to hockey. It's woven into the fabric of the sport. -

You're so hung up on calling the Oilers and Leafs D AHL trash you've missed that we have the exact same trash. If you think Schenn, Poolman, and Burroughs is any better than the Oilers RD or any RD in the league for that matter sorry but you're out to lunch. -

Yeah I tuned out and went to bed after the second as well. Seen this story enough. The D-core is pathetic. Like you say that right hand side are like super oil tankers speed and mobility wise. Yet some people don't see that as a problem. Can it ever be fixed? I don't know how either. We're basically the Oilers trying to outscore our deficiencies. They're just better at it. We're almost the Flyers of the last 25 years desperately trying to find a goalie except with us its RD. -

100% agree. We have way too much talent to let our PP be a weakness. Our PP is so predictable. Play around with the puck ad nauseum forgoing multitudes of great shot opportunities until we try to force a bad pass that goes for an odd man situation the other way. As someone mentioned earlier Edmonton's PP is successful and so hard to stop because they don't just stand in the same spot for 2 minutes. A more traditional PP that gets shots and reacts would be more wise and would also stop being a game-changer for the other team. OEL is so good at controlling the blueline and knowing when and how to shoot the puck from back there. If only Hughes had a howitzer he could get 20 though. Way too many hotdogs out there and not enough serious direction. It's fine to pass the puck around and make nice plays once in a while but when you get 8 PP's you have to be able to bear down when it counts. -

Yes it was a tough call as you say. Hughes coming back into the play probably stopped them from blowing it dead. Unfortunately his bravery backfired and I agree another second or two on the ice and it would have been blown dead. Great summary of the situation. I don't think they should automatically call it though or you would see a lot of faking eventually. The refs just blew it all around on that play and the timing was unlucky. It happens. -

There were a lot of good things last night, I agree, but either they fix the defensive lapses and game management issues or this team is going nowhere again. It's as simple as that. Petey, Bo, Miller, and whoever have to get it through their minds that the PP is not there for them to pad their stats and look like stars, there is still a hockey game going on. At that point their biggest priority/only priority is (should be) don't get scored on. If they don't give up yet another shorty at the worst of times and go into the third up 3-2 we're most likely looking at OT at the very least, possibly a win, and at the very least a point. This is what good teams do regularly and we struggle with on a shift by shift basis. Petey is by far the worst at this, whether it's coaching or poor leadership, the next step for me is to take him off the PP until he learns. He does this once or twice a game at least. My biggest fear is no one is even approaching the topic and with Miller giving the puck away at every opportunity too he's not getting many good examples from the veterans. I don't mean to come off overly negative but that's how I deal with a loss. Look at what you can do to best fix the issues for the next game and future. Like I said, it's only one game but if we don't learn how to be responsible with decision making nothing else will matter. Maybe they need to put OEL on the PP and scrap the 4th forward. It's a sad thought to even have to go there. Obviously special teams was the issue again but it's a reflection of the team's mental approach to the game itself. -

Yup, one thing I've learned in sports is concentrate on the things you actually can do (like protecting a 2 goal lead) and don't waste your time and energy on the things you can't (like complaining about the reffing or changing the rules). It's only one game so I'm not going to throw in the towel but it's disheartening that we don't seem to have addressed our weaknesses at all. Same old risky plays and irresponsible decision making that lead to our downfall last year. -

Well same old crap. Bruce still hasn't taught them game management or defensive acumen. Another game lost by guys d#cking around on the power play when they should be concentrating on winning the game. It's absolutely sickening to watch. They also gave up a horrible two on one in the first period. Mistakes is what wins and loses at this level and we keep making the same ones over and over. Our AHL defence certainly isn't helping on the PK either. At least they started good I guess. Kuz looked good offensively. Petey looked dialed in. We tried to out Oil the Oilers ... silly -

lol, hockey's officially back, if they get a win it's going to be the "is Matthews more important to hockey than Gretzky", story. -

Uggg, how many of those do we get on our road trip? -
Here here! Knock his minutes down and play him on the third line and then maybe he actually adds value when he's not handing the puck away.
