Coach BB: Not making playoffs would be ‘a disaster’ for Canucks
Gawdzukes replied to Sophomore Jinx's topic in Canucks Talk
Shouldn't this just in the Training camp thread? As for the topic I don't really agree. It's a disaster as far as expectations go but in reality it will be a tough go, and I don't think it matters much if we make it or not. In two years time if we're not making the playoffs then "Yes" it's a disaster. It should read "It will be a disaster for Bruce if the Canucks don't make it", because he will be fired. -
Yup, this is what good teams do. No problem with a younger player having to earn it while being waiver exempt. That's how you build up a team instead of just throwing these kids to the wolves. He may be much better if he comes back to the team when there is a spot that needs filling and the rest of the team is rolling.

I know you don't like Dickie. I was very unimpressed but I imagine he'll get every chance. We're going to need some guys with different skill sets. Sometimes it takes players an entire year to adjust. Either way i just don't see him getting sent down. But we can hope right?

Can we please stop talking about Green and his systems? Such a stupid conversation. You can't see every system and coaching direction through your TV for starters. Green may have sucked but he wasn't deploying some crazy alien systems ffs. He's been coached by very good coaches, better than here, and is using very common systems. I know people have this need to pile endless blame on Green and try to demonize every aspect of his being but holy crap. It's 2022-2023, we are coached by the great BB. Enough already!

This would be my guess unless Pearson goes down to line 4.

Yeah, we could be dead in the water with our second pairing if QH is #1Rd. Imagining Myers without OEL makes me shudder. Unfortunately bad starts weren't unique to Green as that problem persisted right up to the end of the year with BB as well. Green is arrogant as hell though, part of the reason I hated him when he played in Toronto, also because he played in Toronto. He's smug as a bug and has no clue how over-rated he was as a player either. You can say what you want about him but he did have that untapped passion for coaching much like BB, if I recall how they got into it. Both students of the game who had never really originally planned on coaching, but showed an aptitude for the finer points of the game by the time they finished. I know we all hate him here but honestly I think you're right, he should have been an assistant first, and he still has decent potential as a coach in the right situation. Hate him or really hate him he's long gone now, thankfully. For me it comes back to Benning. Got rid of Beagle, Roussel, Player Ericksson. Then he lost Sutter, and replaced with Lammikko, and Dickinson, who were pretty horrible. Also lost Edler, and Tanev, and only got OEL. I think any coach would have struggled until they finally found a partial solution, like BB did. At the end of the year we were still 3rd last, 74.89%. I think the Mikeyhev signing is evidence that we were simply missing the right personnel.

For sure, I mean it could of been, @Apricot do we really need her? And the answer is, Yes, yes we do!
-
Yeah it's important to get these lines straight. Heck of a task considering all the line-ups we've seen here. Although, I'm sure BB has an idea of who he wants to try where. A few new guys in Aman, and Karlsson, etc., that need looks but otherwise just getting the line combos worked out is imperative. It should be very interesting how it plays out. A guy like Joshua needs to have a good camp but we pretty much know who is going to be on the squad with how deep our forwards are. I could see some defence guys like Keeper staying around longer.

As long as the coach doesn't use it to evaluate players like that other dummy!

Wow, can't believe they invited X amount of players but only X were goalies and X were defenceman. Weird!

Canuck Pre-Season Playoff Betting Odds -- Lower Than I Expected
Gawdzukes replied to JamesB's topic in Canucks Talk
Apparently that's the new expectations. -
I really liked what I saw. A little raw but heavily involved in all the action and appeared to play a heavy game. Could just be more athletically advanced than the other kids though.

Breath of fresh air.

Ha, yeah exactly but it's a natural progression. Basically any team can make the playoffs with a weak D. However, most teams with a negative plus/minus are on the outside looking in ... so you have to outscore your opponents in this case. Poor defensive teams don't usually make it to far though. There are 3 ways we can improve out porous D from last year. One is to change personnel. We can't do that though because we're stuck like the rest of the league. The other way is improvement from specific players internally, or a complete buy in mentally from the entire team as a whole to cover up weaknesses. Unless key players like Petey, Boeser, Miller, and Myers come in with a whole new defensive toolkit it'll be up to the team to buy in as a whole, and BB to implement a structure to get it done. I think it's actually possible with the Miller signing and the excitement around the team. Kuzmenko, Mikheyev, Lazar, and Joshua, are all question marks, and will help determine that level of commitment. There is a lot riding on these new players in terms of making a progression as a team.

@Shayster007 is spot on. Defence wins championships and ours is simply not good as a team. That goes from the forwards to really everyone on the ice except for Demko. Up front Miller has to be far more responsible with the puck, especially as an $8m player. Petterson also has to shape up defensively. He is particularly poor on our own PP. As another top 6 player Boeser needs to put in some more work/effort defensively. He's just a passenger out there. That's half of our top 6 guys who are weak on the d side. As @combover said we scare no one defensively. We are super easy to play against. The defensive side is an absolute mess with slow thinking, immobile RD. It's littered with question marks from the top to the bottom on both sides besides 2 players, and probably the worst prospect pool in the league. You simply can't ignore how well you play away from the puck and expect to be a top team. This team can add as many forwards as they want but are not going to be one of the better teams until they can overpower teams by scoring but also shutting the other teams down consistently. Maybe Mikeyhev, and the new fourth line guys are the glue to make this happen, plus Petterson, Podkolzin, Kuzmenko, and co buying in. However, the overall defence looks real scary moving forward. Not to be a Debbie Downer but this is what will determine how good this team can be. It'll take total team commitment this year as compared to last year, simple as that.

Looking like a real solid pickup. Looking forward to seeing him in Abby, and how the transition is.

He got 23 games last year. He should get his fair share of opportunity. To be honest it looks like a good natured competition for both players. Good environment.

[PTO] Danny DeKeyser with Canucks

Oh yes. Sorry sir. I apologize for expressing my thoughts again. Silly me. I will leave this site again. It's all yours. -

Some people argue that just about every player is irreplaceable because you have to pay someone else just as much. It's a ridiculous concept as you mentioned. Myers needs to be replaced anyway. Hopefully with someone cheaper or better. Same with Pearson. You can't just keep everyone and add to your roster at the same time. -

Yep, we're pretty much out of options. Just have to go with what we got. Could still be a problem in 36 months time as we'll be trying to squeeze blood from a stone as they say. -
Hilarious how CDC was all over this guy and then he promptly wins coach of the year with Columbus.
