  1. JR seems pretty intent on giving him a spot. They think he's good to go. We'll see if he's improved enough because yeah he got eaten alive last year.
  2. Yeah, he got that big contract after one good year. He's a very tough player, good in the playoffs, and scores timely goals. Just not enough of them. He's a great 3rd liner on a good team.
  3. Anyone that thinks Suzuki is a 3rd liner is out to lunch. He's an incredibly good hockey player.
  4. I remember Mason Raymond was the King for me of safe clears. He used to practice 100-500 a day from in his own end, and they were all perfectly weighted to land right at or just past center ice after a nice high chip, so no chance of an over the board penalty. Problem with Myers is he doesn't do it right away, or he's just too slow when he has a chance. There is a newer direction some hockey teams are pursuing where they try to keep possession at all costs, even in their own end. To me it looks like that's what Myers does. Other teams see this and just capitalize on how slow and poor he is at decision making in tight spaces. I think BB just has to dumb it down and simplify it so the whole team is aware of stakes. Either dump it out or have a safe alternative. He shouldn't be encouraged to skate the puck out of his own end. Imo of course. I still think we're asking a miracle out of Dermott. He's showed he's a good 6/7 role guy but to jump into a #3 role out of the blue is a big ask imo. I'm 100% onboard with De-Haan, if he can't garner a better contract elsewhere.
  5. Well they're in a rebuild and have a lot of prospects coming up plus probably another high pick next year. Add in Suzuki, Caufield, Gallagher, Drouin, Dvorak, Evans, and Barron. Wow you're right though does their D ever blow! If you add in Slafovsky next year I would say by year 3 they could have a pretty good top 6 that Dach would fit into nicely. At the very least he'll have a sniper LW, and MSL seemed to be a great fit there too as coach. A team can really turn the corner quick if you hit on a couple picks, of which the habs have had plenty.
  6. "We like Bo and we're communicating with his camp. We'll see if there is a deal to be made," Allvin said, noting that every contract negotiation takes its own unique path. "He's been a good player for his stint in Vancouver, so hopefully we can figure something out here." Hmmm this could lead to wild speculation .... also "When you're doing a deal like this long term, we took our time and looked into the roster," said general manager Patrik Allvin, "The cap situation moving forward, obviously, is important. And then we looked at options. What's out there in terms of players being available, potentially, for next summer? "I don't think you just go from being a non-playoff team to be a Stanley Cup winner," Allvin said. "I think this is a process over time. "I think in today's game, our goal is to be a very competitive team over time. By being that, we need to make a big step this year. I believe that the players are prepared and their mindset is ready to come in here for day one training camp." Looks like they were in a pickle no matter which way they went and took the path of least resistance, or the at least we know what we've got route, which seems reasonable given the landscape.
  7. Yeah he can it's literally his only play though, and it's got to be set up for him to curl around the net. Most every other time he just coughs it up in a myriad of different ways. Dermott is not bad but if can't suddenly become a #3 pairing puck clearer ... shudder We'll see simple defence is one thing I believe can be taught. If BB can simply get him to dump the puck out he can be effective. Typically you don't want 6'7 guys with poor mobility over-handling the puck in your own end. Doesn't mean they can't be effective players. It comes down to coaching though.
  8. I said 3 mil when I saw the thread title. These kids are all getting decent cash on their second deal. I watched Dach a lot in junior. He's still a top notch talent, he kind of got derailed in Chicago. I'm guessing the contract turns out to be a steal for the last couple years. It is kind of a confusing move. Personally I think they are hoping this thing turns around quickly.
  9. I don't think that second line does that. Myers has a hell of time clearing the zone. Dermott isn't known for it either.
  10. Oh yeah by desperate I mean in a year or two if no other opportunities present themselves. I think if we can somehow get Schenn off Hughes line he's a great partner who could make Rathbone successful from the get go. Dermott is a wildcard. I don't really know if BB would even play him on the second pairing. We'll see, who knows maybe Keeper makes the team.
  11. It's nice to see Dermott in early and speaking with BB about the upcoming year. Looks like he's really serious about taking it the next level. I think he gets he has a real opportunity here. Yup, nothing left to do now but sit back and see how the team performs. Hopefully we make the playoffs as that is now an expectation for this group. It won't kill us if we don't but what we do at RD in the next couple of years will make or break this squad's chances. I have faith they will get something done. I hope we're blown away with the results and get a top notch D in but just the right parts can also work. I don't even like to mention it but Pods is probably the one younger guy that could garner a huge return if we get desperate enough. Sometimes that's the kind of sacrifice you need to win now but I would be very sad too.
  12. Yeah LA is a bad example. They definitely were building themselves up prior to that season. Getting Carter at the trade deadline made them a true contender. If we are in the playoff race and add Kane, Mackinnon, Pastrnak, or Tarasenko, and Severson/Dumba, somehow it could be a similar situation. Carter and Richards put them over the top though. We haven't added that level of player yet to a team that had already made the playoffs twice.
  13. That's exactly what I expect will happen. We need to do everything in our power to improve there. Unfortunately that means trading 1st rounders probably. One of these decades we just have to draft a couple RD's early. I would be totally fine using all of our picks on RD next year just because I'm frustrated lol.
  14. Yup, now we're the ones making the typical Boeser/Hoglander/1st type trades. I would kind of expect our firsts are going to be on the table moving forward. I'm thinking we target at least one RD through trade and probably the other in FA. It could require up to 12 mil. We'll have 6 coming from Myers contract plus 5 or 6 from the aforementioned trade, although I think a younger cost-controlled guy will be the #1 target. We need a bit of cap space to tweak the line-up and bolster the line-up at the TDL as well.
  15. I think all this contender talk is kind of silly. Are we a contender ... no we're simply not. I think lots of people in the business will have us as a darkhorse though. If we win the Cup it would easily be the biggest surprise since Carolina, and probably even further back, maybe Montreal I don't know for sure. Does it matter? No, not really because we certainly weren't going to be any more of a contender this year by trading Miller anyway. Can we make some noise in the playoffs and be an exciting team? Sure, but our defence is still horribly suspect, and our depth is certainly thin as well us untested, as is our backup goalie. The true test will come next year or the year after with how they address the defence, and make the resulting changes to the forwards. Years 3, 4, and 5 are likely the peak years of our new window, but hell why not enjoy the ride now while we can? There is no turning back now.
  16. I watched a hockey movie the other day about pursuing the dream overseas. It's called Odd Man Rush. This kid gets traded from the German league to Sweden. After the coach and a couple players picked him up at the bus stop in his Volvo he told him his three simple rules. 1. Always give 100% in every practice and every game. 2. If you are ever in your own end, chip it out or f#$k off. 3. Never sh!t on the bus. I think this is a good start. Seriously though development will be key. One more year of experience from Petterson, Hughes, and Bo, will mean a lot as they do a lot of the heavy hitting. Then there is Boeser, Dermott, as well and Hoglander if he is still here. Podkolzin, is still young and learning, but he is projected as a key cog defensively moving forward. Rathbone is in there too. Hopefully the new additions bring what they are supposed to defensively as this group needs to develop that TB style of defensive prowess from within. It's going to require a team buy in from all of these young guys and new players to becoming stingy defensively, and consistency is crucial. I think there is a good chance that several of these players make strides forward this year. It's also up to Miller to set the tone. He's got to make good hockey decisions and smart plays with the puck as the other players will follow his lead now more than ever. I think the players are revved up as can be and and will bring their A games. It's also big having Petey and Hughes here, engaged, excited, and injury free, heading into camp. What a different feel from last year's camp eh! Thanks for the article. Good read. I had to laugh at the end. Special teams analysis: Well it's useless to talk about because Crosby is a baby and the refs give him all the calls. haha bitter Rags writer.
  17. And a Leaf lol. Sports are littered with players who never gave a crap defensively but their offense is so good they have a spot in the team. Really frustrating as these types of players could usually always be far better if they applied themselves. Heffy doesn't really understand hockey at it's core though. I would imagine he would probably kick at least a quarter of the current dmen out of the league and just go with 4 d or something.
  18. We simply need some rd defenceman that can play hockey. We need 3 or 4 in short order so really he could be a useful player. No need to be overly picky. Some players provide good defense simply by being good at hockey, even if their strength is offense. I think way too many writing him off.
  19. As someone who was pretty vocal in the trade Miller thread, I'm glad it's over more than anything. Most importantly the team has a direction. There was a big chance the season could have been a total waste and critically set back the team if we were dealing with this situation all year. Now it's full steam ahead. The year should be blast with Bruce at the helm. Add in the new faces on forward and I'm excited as ever to see how it all plays out. At least collectively we should all be on the same page as fans. One thing I really like is the Mikheyev move. He's a big player who skates like the wind and can play with skill at the same time. He's also very good defensively and is a PK specialist. Should fit well on almost any line. He also appears to be a great teammate and will help bring the room together. What a perfect compliment to our young skilled forward group. I also love the additions of Joshua and Lazar. It shows management shares my vision there. It's got toughness, decent size, defensively responsible, and very importantly salary efficient. I've been a fan of Lazar since junior and I'll be rooting for him big time. I always said I'd like to see Miller re-signed but I couldn't see a way they could do it and still improve the team where necessary. Well now we will see how they go about doing that. I'm still pretty worried about how hard this will be but I'm going to trust in the new management team and see what they can do. It's an exciting time to be a Canucks fan. That's for sure. Go Go! I must also say Kudos to Miller for making the commitment he did. It makes a difference when a quality player wants it that much. No matter what happens in the future that's a good environment created by a great player.
