  1. I think I'd like that plan. It just might work. If we get OEL munching more minutes and taking Myers ice time down it could conceivably make quite a difference. Of course someone has to step up at LD though. Maybe that's DeHann and leaves a Rathbone Schenn line which I think would be a perfect fit for Jack in his first real season. Much like Hughes in that sense. That's a way more balanced D line-up and leaves Dermott and Poolman/Burroughs as depth pieces. Not bad. I'll admit it is a rather exciting thought if we could just figure something out there.
  2. Exactly. This team played extreme backs against the wall hockey for half a year and made a hell of a push which few teams could sustain. In your own words that should tell all you need to know about the expectations for this club. Despite this unsustainable push we were still a fringe wildcard team (8th place) when all was said and done.
  3. We shall see. I may be one of those people as I didn't buy into that narrative as deeply as some. You mean a ten point bump on top of the Bruce bump ... hmmm I don't think so. One thing I think is some people are neglecting that Bruce walked into a team that was already put together and went through a bonding process already. He's probably not going to get the 11 game bump to start the season and he's got a lot of new faces (4) to integrate on forward, plus a shaky right side. Bruce is awesome but I think he's also human, as are our players. I wouldn't be shocked if they start out poor or at a medium level because of it. There's also going to be a fair amount of pressure on Miller, and the team to deliver. Miller already said it's going to be hard to concentrate with his career and future hanging in the balance. We also seemed to get some luck with playing back up goalies, being under credited by the opposition, and some good luck. I seem to recall teams coming into Van at the end being totally sick with Covid, injuries, and at the end of a long road trip. I don't think anyone will take us lightly like they may have after our start last year. It's going to be ultra competitive this year. Even Anaheim is going to be a tough out. One thing is it's going to be riveting TV come October with all these different opinions. If they come out 14-6 in the first 20 I will officially congratulate you on being right on this one.
  4. We'll see. I think we fine tune the RD, (our LD is set) and in 2-3 years we should be a consistent playoff team bordering on contenders with Hughes, Petey, and Pods, all entering their prime. At this point we can use that 8m Miller would be taking up to add to the forwards if necessary. In addition we would hopefully be adding to our prospect pool all the while to ensure continued playoffs in years 5-8, in addition to the short-term. Hughes and Petey are so young I think it does them a disservice to purposely sign a bloated contract for their prime ages 27-30. I wish you were our GM and you could just scare us up a couple Rd's, a Miller contract, and some cap space. I would definitely be down if you can pull it off. It may be possible somehow but it sure wouldn't be easy and the numbers and landscape just look horrible. I just hate being the team that doesn't do smart hockey things and just throws money at the problem year after year. I guess I can pose the same question to you. Were just going to all of the sudden become contenders without doing anything different after being a joke for the last 5 years?
  5. Yeah thanks. I didn't realize they already incorporated the other two signings in Cap Friendly. Damn I really liked him as a draft choice that year but we got Quinn so all good.
  6. Does this mean they have to trade someone? Do you how their cap is working? Edit: Ah sorry they already have Bellows and Romanov on Cap Friendly so I guess anywhere up to $7.4.
  7. I have made a grave mathematical error. My apologies to Euclid and Newton.
  8. Nicely said. Signing Miller is going to make it nearly impossible to do the things necessary to improve the team's weaknesses. We shouldn't be making an all in gamble when we know full well we're missing the necessary parts. All those things you mentioned are roadblocked by a big Miller money deal. Like you said the next year alone is the new Bo deal, another chance at a RD, Kuzmenko' s contract, Hoglander's contract, and Schenn's deal is over. The 2 years after are Pod's and Petey's contracts and we would have zero cap flexibility again to fix anything that needs fixing. It's this lack of flexibility that makes this team stagnant from year to year already but some people want to repeat it again. Of course this is all predicated on the notion he signs a team friendly deal ...
  9. They also have a real shot at 6th. Like people are saying it looks like we're in a fight for the wildcard spot at this point. In sports your competition is almost always going to be better than you think, not worse like some folks are saying. That's a faux pas. I see a lot of hopeful thinking not quite based in reality. You're basically hoping the whole Western Conference got worse while we got better. We maybe got marginally better up front. Maybe. The same other players are still in the NHL. This league didn't get any easier than last year.
  10. Kadri? Yeah I don't get why some are assuming the absolute worst. Just like every other year teams are going to experience injuries and just plain old make trades to get better at the deadline. There is no reason to believe we won't get a decent - great return if we choose to trade him. You're talking about a top notch ufa rental for peanuts by the time the TDL rolls around. Yeah considering all the ups and downs in terms of options and "deadlines" there is still a chance to get what we need out of the situation. Like you said it it's a big gamble but maybe one we had to take considering the gridlock in cap you mentioned.
  11. I have the patience for a retool/changes as stated when JR and Allvin were hired. Also the patience to address the RD which looks like it could take a couple years. If in 2-3 years we're not on serious trajectory than I'm with you blow it up and do a proper rebuild. Hughes, Petey, Pods, Hogs, Bo, Rathbone, Demko, and even Boeser, can still be traded for a massive haul but we also have the chance in the interim to get there too. Not to mention it's a horrible time to be trading right now. As long as management is consistent. If they want to keep Miller do it and start trading all our firsts and prospects and load up and go for it. I don't like that plan myself.
  12. When we're prognosticating people should probably remember that in addition to replacing Myers we also need a another top 4 guy like you mention so that's going to cost another 1.5 to 3 million on top of Poolman's 2.5. That's the problem with having zero prospects in the system that can even play a lower roster role. We also have replace Schenn's sweet 850,000, so that could be another mil or more as well. So if we're intent on actually fixing the RD properly we should be probably be allocating another 3-4 mil to that position. Unless we can acquire a younger player, which we should do but guess what that takes? Yeah it'll take assets. I like OEL a lot but that money/high picks should have went to a RD.
  13. I get you don't like waiting and want us throwing everything we got at it the next couple years. Part of the reason I prefer to slow it down it is because our young key core guys Quinn, Petey, Pods, and Hogs are still very young. I think the reason we're not more dominant yet is simply because those kids are still learning what it takes to be successful in the NHL. I have no doubts they will get there and be some of the very best in the NHL but it will take some time. It could be next year or it could take them 3 years to really get to the to top of their games. It's all these little reasons that add up that don't have me at all concerned about showing some patience with this team over the next 2 years. If the kids pop that's great but it's not the end of the world if it takes some 22 year olds a couple more years to get there.
  14. I haven't seen any reports on that stuff either. Yeah this is all possible but as we've seen in the past it's always rosy and we always end up with cap shortages. Even before Covid the cap and NHL always have these rosy looking forecasts which rarely come to fruition. The cap is always supposed to go up in leaps and bounds but it doesn't. A million here a million there. I won't go any further here because I'm on shaky ground knowledge wise. It's one of the big reasons we're in cap trouble though so I'm wary of repeating those mistakes again. Just like real life you can rebound from a recession but peoples salaries are never quite as quick to recover. I'm not sure what the Covid rules are this year. Are they dropping testing too like the NFL? Either way we'll see a resurgence this winter so at the very least it may be smart business to first see if we get a 100% rebound or what the financial/NHL landscape looks like in a year. Which for me makes a big signing difficult due to many unknown variables. We could be looking at 1 year or it could be 5 before financial stability returns.
  15. Damn it's too early to fool JM. Stupid Bobrovsky. Let's sign 3 of them then. Just joking. Don't forget we have OEL already. Personally I don't consider the Sabres or Wings bottom feeders anymore. I think they both have good years and turn the corner ... but that's just my take. Like Stawns said it's all about the contention window but you're correct. Most half assed teams have at least one but I don't know if that's a good rationale for acquiring one or not. If we sign Bo to 8 years that's likely another there too. If we went your way and signed Miller I'd probably trade Bo out of necessity. At least the return would be better than a couple of crappy swamp beans and some bum they found at the bus station. Wai lai ... er I mean lol
  16. Preds Redwings Sabres (Skinner?) Isles Honorable mention Panthers Hurricanes (Just traded for Burns so they're fine with it) I don't buy that we should sign one too just because other teams have done it though.
  17. Yeah exactly. Thank you. I have to shake my head a bit (a lot) when people make these big prognostications like it'll be at $100 mil in 6 years. One thing going through Covid taught me is to be somewhat conservative and expect some hiccups along the way. Things are improving but we're not out of the woods by any stretch. Yet there is a rash of people that can't wait to go spend every single penny of a fictional amount they've created in their head. You can run along at break neck speed and hope everything falls into place but you can also take your time and make sure it works out correctly.
  18. Some people think it's no big deal to sign a big contract and predict the cap to go up right away. I wouldn't bet on it myself. Tonnes of instability as you suggest going on right now.
  19. Maybe Bo should sign for 5mil a season and give the rest to Miller if he really wants to win. Solves all our problems lol. Honestly I don't think Bo is the type of guy to bolt. He's the Captain and doesn't seem to be the type to walk away from a challenge. Certainly these guys understand that not everyone can be retained. I think he's probably got a deal in place as soon as Miller is figured out.
