[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Gawdzukes replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
We will see but I don't believe he's willing to sign for less than 8x8ish. If he's willing to do 6x7.5 it's worth looking at for sure. I get what you're saying about the team here now and his mentorship etc., but is it worth that much for intangibles? I noticed your comments to Nucker and like you said I think it comes down to your opinion of the team in the end. If you're one of the people that thought this team was amazing last year it makes all the sense in the world to keep Miller. I wasn't overly impressed, even with our strong finish I thought we got massively outplayed for large portions of most games. I mean we're not horrible we're a decent exciting younger team with some great pieces. I just didn't see a team capable of playing a dominating, 60 minute game, capable in all departments. Unfortunately the salary cap is extremely tricky to navigate or keeping JT would be a no brainer. Either way I think we were just dealt a bad hand. The teams at the top have been successful during flat cap because not much movement is possible. The teams at the bottom have collected high picks without sacrificing much (3 Covid seasons). It's us teams in the middle that have to figure out how to forge ahead. -

Yes these things are possible I suppose. Maybe you can agree that if not crippling it may at least be considered difficult? That's my biggest concern. It feels to me we spend to the cap every year without addressing our biggest weaknesses. If we made a big move to address the issues than great but I guess I'd feel like we're in limbo until we do it. The media has no clue what the offers have been but I'm assuming they're better than the third we got for Hamonic, or the 6th we got for Benn, or Goldobiin for Hansen, or the 3rd and 7th for Lack, etc.. I have a belief that acquiring assets is a key for good NHL teams. I don't think that's too crazy. -

I just don't see how we do it while giving Miller 8 mil a season though. Timing is a massive issue. Zero flexibility and a wild hope some quality RD land in our lap for free somehow. I agree that you can only do so many incremental things in a year. Signing Miller just makes it that much harder to fix the D. We need cap space in order to pounce on the opportunity when it arises. I don't see how we can add any RD with 0 cap space and other raises coming up. To me if you have a serious problem you don't fix it by spending huge cash on a different luxury item. That's just me though I've become quite conservative money wise in my old age. I'm getting tired of just going for it every year though and getting no where. I personally want a dedicated commitment to building a winner. But hey if they want to put everything in one basket for this year whatever. I just think it's the wrong move if we're being honest with ourselves about the complexion of the team. Sure I guess we can keep Miller for a year and get nothing for him if you want. It just doesn't make any sense to me to get nothing for the best trade chip we've had in decades, on purpose. -

I still think it's just really bad math. Until we fix the RD we're going nowhere. A player here or there is one thing but we literally have zero RD players within two years time and zilch coming to address it. You can't win in the NHL when you're missing an entire position. We would waste the best 2 years of JT's career waiting for bad contracts to expire and trying to acquire dmen. -
I hear ya 100% I was also hoping for an electric performance but to be honest this Sweden team kind of sucked lol. I remember that pre tourney game they were just rubbish. I also desperately want to see Lekk on an ELC as soon as possible too. I think it's critical to our success in the cap world. I think it should actually be pretty beneficial to see him in the Allsvenskan where he can play a bigger role and be a difference maker. Smaller progressions are better for some players. Hopefully they can win promotion and get back up. He's got a couple of years here to round out his game. Hey the good news? We get to see him back in 3 months for a redo but he'll be a year older somehow.

Are there really people thinking Miller is looking for a 7x7? -
Yeah that wasn't my intention at all. I was just commenting on Lekk. I mean maybe he was there to win hockey games and not showcase his game for CDC to settle a debate though? As you stated, I guess it's better he's fast as compared to slow right? One guy played on an elite top line and the other was an afterthought. I do believe coaching and playing on different teams in different situations affects the results as well. Kemell might be the better player right now but he didn't really impress me either. I thought he was rather pedestrian out there. I'm not a draft guru though so I don't care who liked who before the draft or anything. You almost seem happy he didn't have a better showing. I'm not going to write him off quite yet myself.

I think on a more conventional 3rd line he might be a better fit. I also like to give players a year in new surroundings. It's not a good thing but some players can take a whole season to adjust to new surroundings and gain confidence. It'll be very interesting to see what happens but someone has to go ... or Hoglander to AHL perhaps.

Well I guess it could be like height but he's listed at 180. I said close. He's very stocky and I don't think he's that much lighter ... or what do you think he's at? -
Well he's already representing his country in a defensive role which is great for development and he has lots in the tank ... as in a lot of improvements can be made on both sides of the game. I'd imagine we're not seeing anything close to the final product.
-
Yeah I was just noticing that as well. It's hard to get a read when he's playing 3rd line and they're winning. Plus he's so young. I've been watching all the Finn games and Kemell is a huge opportunist. He benefits from getting the puck on his stick at the right time but doesn't really make a huge impact himself and is more benefitting from teammates from what I see. I like that he's accepting of a role in order to win.

I think it's a great sign if he has the speed but isn't using it yet.

Haha, yeah. Tiny tots lol. Colorado also boasts Makar who is barely bigger than Quinn at 187 lbs, Toews is 191, Byram is 190. Manson and Johnson are both 225 so I could see us follow that approach. Quick sticks and good defensive acumen can make up for a couple pounds. I'd rather have Girard over Poolman 1000 days a week though no matter the situation. No disrespect to Tucker. -

Yeah it's a real concern for sure. Can we get better bigger RD then I'm in but maybe since we need 3 of them this one could be useful. I agree though 2 small guys is probably enough unless we have one defensive tank on each line. I'd rather have skill than size I think. -

Thanks I appreciate it. Doesn't really pass the sniff test for me, even though Uncle Laleet sounds super legit. Not Haha. I get Aqulini wanting to see his father see success but I don't see that as making direct calls on personnel or to what level that would reach. Certainly they could have pushed harder if this was true. Sounds like complete unfounded conjecture to me but I don't know. This is my favorite part though: But then, we learn something interesting. For those unaware, there is a frequent caller of both Canucks radio stations who goes by the Twitter handle, Uncle Laleet. He is an entertaining caller that is frustrated by the team’s current direction and is very much in the scorched Earth rebuild camp. hehe -

Exactly, if you didn't follow that key story to our success you mustn't have had the volume turned up on your TV or watched any of the highlights on sports center either. Yeah he was the story aside from Demko although Petey and Miller played great too. Point being Bo was a massive leader there and a couple times single-handedly put his team on his back and went through the entire team to win us the game. He played like a true warrior, and leader, which was the original point I believe. -

Ummm sir, you're standing in line at Subway, may I take your order. Ummm not possible didn't you see JT had six more points/sarcasm Anyone that watched the series saw Bo put us on his back. Clearly the catalyst our team relied upon, not to mention huge goals and single handedly winning games along with Demko. -

Just out of curiosity why do people think Aquaman interferes or has a playoff directive? I would think multi billionaires are fairly smart and understand the basics of revenue now vs revenue later. They don't seem to need the revenue and operates the team at full cap as a personal interest vs a business investment. Maybe you guys know something I don't but I would think the GM's who made the call have a far more invested interest in compromising the future of the team for results now. I mean if Aquaman were desperate and needing money I would totally get it. -

Nice summary. They definitely have appeared to make major miscalculations regarding the market and gambling on making the playoffs was a silly move inconsistent with their message. How they handle this decision will basically be their defining moment. Like you my leeway will be far shorter with this group. Benning actually had to deal with the Sedin winddown and a barren wasteland of talent and prospects. I knew it would be some down time after being one of the most successful/good teams for over a decade even though we weren't one of the handful who won the Cup. Personally I feel we've been throwing crap at the wall and going with the same group ad nauseum for 4 years now. I'm getting very tired of it from a fan standpoint. This group hired of tonne of upper management, spent a tonne on intangibles but haven't done as much for the on ice product or our future after preaching big changes. I really hope they have something up their sleeve that moves the needle and gives me some hope for the future that is more than just hoping we fluke out and make the playoffs and then make a Cinderella run. -

Exactly. In a landscape where it's super hard to find good D here is a very good player who would make our d significantly better with a good contract and age to boot. At least he's a significant upgrade in the skill department.
