  1. Yeah 85 mil. Holy crap I guess they decided they weren't walking away from the offseason with nothing. You're right though and hopefully JR/PA can find a decent trade for us along the way. It's going to be a wait and see process. Might happen when we least expect it.
  2. Yeah I can't see him toiling away in Canada when he could be front page news in America and have his children grow up near family, especially the grandparents. He may love Vancouver but not enough to settle down for the rest of his career when he has a choice. I haven't heard one word from him about wanting to retire and play out his days as a Canuck, just standard soundbites keeping his options open.
  3. People traditionally over-rate their own teams and those with strong teams are quietly humble hoping it all works out. We do have an awful lot of positives but also a tonne of things that need to work out as well. This tends to lead to mixed results. Also people talking about Vegas' downfall should remember Tampa the last several years. People always say they're just screwed by the cap and then they ice a deadly line-up and remind us they are an elite team.
  4. Well like I said I wasn't adamant about this just speculating ... I didn't get that far. I see you asked wsa as well but my point was more coming from the angle of if management wanted to attempt something like that $12 mil in cap space is better than $0 right? I guess Weegar was an option. Pulock, Dobson, Mayfield, Larsson, Theodore, Girard, Severson, Pesce, Hronek maybe. Sorry I was leaving that part up to management and I don't disagree it's super hard but so is trading Miller and we're trying to do that. Point being you can't do anything with zero cap space. I wasn't really trying to change your mind just having a conversation point. I agree completely that our winger depth should serve us well when guys like Miller are moved. Really good plan while maybe showing our hand a bit. Yeah we have no choice really ... unless we trade our first and second this year plus Myers, Ferland, and Dickinson for Chychrun. Seriously though yes these contracts can slowly come off the books in the next two years. Definitely not crippling. Unfortunately the league is operating in safe mode for the next two years while we reboot the system so just stagnant. Just yet another reason to not go for it while the league is in flux. Better off positioning the club for when the league is back to normal.
  5. That's the play that could have been there for us. You also make a valid point in that as we hit our competitive window he will be getting up in age. All we can hope is that he maintains a high level of play throughout that period. That's the way we went and we're committed to it now. There is more than one way to skin a cat but it means our RD still has a big zero in terms of a succession plan. So we're going to have to find 3 RD's in short order in a difficult climate.
  6. They are not bad players at all but certainly it could have opened up some other possibilities. Namely a RD to play with Quinn instead of a 7m dollar second pairing LD could have been a strong advantage for our defensive make-up. Especially with LD seemingly being easier to find. Also we currently have too many wingers and can't even dump one for free so that would have also freed that up as well. However that should sort itself out eventually. In addition there is the two high picks we lost. I'm not hugely advocating for this or anything but it would have given us the cap space management is so desperately seeking and perhaps the ability to do what they really wanted. It is interesting to think on. I really like OEL though and I think Canuck fans will see an even better more important player this year so I'm still happy. As one last thought how good would that deal look in this off-season. $12 million in almost complete dead cap traded for a first and second. That in itself would be a coup but we also got 2 higher end NHL players out of it. Win Win baby!
  7. Canucks fan counters Vegas Injury Be Gone card with Bruce There it is card. Add 10 to your own projected Canucks Final Total Points Score. Seriously though some wishful thinking on Vegas from some folks.
  8. Yes this is all true. However it kind of sucks the team that perhaps took a full step back was the best team and still finished a comfortable 19 points ahead of us. The closest playoff team LA who finished 7 ahead of us did the most beside us to improve and brought in a ppg 82 point player at no cost who fills some big holes for them. They should be much improved. Edmonton finished 12 points ahead of us and hasn't really gotten any worse. They arguably addressed their biggest question mark. Vegas who finished 2 points ahead of us loses a ppg player in Patches, but this team still has a top notch defence, goalie, and star power, and will be more healthy. They have some depth issues but as we've seen they're not afraid to go and address these (Miller lol). They've been a top team in the league for years. Even though I really really don't like them they're pretty impossible to count out at this stage. Fighting for the division lead in my view. The best I can see is it really depends which team(s) steps up and grabs the bull by the horns. We'll be in the mix but we're no shoe in.
  9. No I wouldn't say long shot either. I think we're 20% chance a fairly improved team, 55% chance to make the playoffs, 45% chance to just miss. 15-20% chance we run into hard times. Does that even make mathematical sense? Ah it's late whatever I'm going with it. lol.
  10. We finished 5th last year. I don't know we're that much better to catch Calgary, Edmonton, or any improved LA. Vegas is a good team with severe injury problems last year. Unfortunately I see them jumping back up to the top of the standings with a return to health. It'll be a battle probably coming down to injuries.
  11. 1. LA 2. Vegas 3. Edmonton 4. Calgary 5. Vancouver 6. Anaheim 7. SJ 8. Seattle In all honesty it's completely wide open though. I expect the Canucks to be fighting for the last wildcard into the last couple games of the season.
  12. Yeah I like OEL but it certainly would have been nice to have Guenther, or a younger RD, or prospect and 12 mil in cap space. Don't forget the second rounder where Luneau and Salomonsonn, both RD were drafted shortly after, or even a center like Jack Hughes.
  13. Jesper Bratt Severson 2023 1st Miller Pearson Dickinson Hoglander Myers
  14. Fair enough. First and foremost I just want the team to continually make good decisions, which of course includes trading an over-priced aging Miller. I completely get your stance though. I just feel that 2-3 years of waiting is an essential part of hockey which I would enjoy (knowing we're investing in ourselves), and that's the part we're continually skipping ... to our own detriment. If you're always so worried about losing players you are forced to go for it and sign bad contracts at the same time it is pretty much a recipe for losing. I see no reason to blow up a core of 22 year old players just to try to re-draft those same players in 3-4 years, and then try to add to them again. It literally makes no sense, especially when the market is terrible. I get trading Bo in addition to Miller perhaps but we've got a good young core. No reason not to support and build around them.
  15. Yeah I have to completely disagree on that one JM. But that's alright you know that already. Too self defeatist for me and an unsuccessful approach imo. If I'm building a team I look at the core as Petey, Hughes, Demko, Podkolzin. They are average age of 22.5 and even Demko surely has 10 years of hockey left. For me that's a huge window. Easily 7-10 years of prime hockey for the three skaters and Goalies play well into their 30's. Even if Demko leaves (which I doubt) all teams have a goalie and we will have one either way. For me we need to add some RD by draft, trade, and UFA. It could take a little time. In addition adding a couple high end players like Lekkerimaki in the next 3-6 years will be what we should be shooting for in order to build a team with high end skill capable of getting to the finals. Personally I don't think Miller makes us such a great team that Petey and Hughes, etc., will be completely enamored and want to stay anyway. They will be far more impressed by smart use of the cap and the resulting better team and future ... imo. If I'm Petey I don't see much incentive of re-signing if Miller is wasting a bunch of cap on a retirement deal. @JM_ little update here as I'm re-reading but to me it seems obvious from what your worries are is that we should be more worried about what the team looks like in 2024/2026 when Petey/Demko is up for renewal, not the next two years while he is under contract. I don't think he'll care much that we tried hard two years ago when he decides what to do, he'll care about the future position of the club.
  16. Biggest solvable reason that's it harder to win in Canada is the fanbase expectation. We always want to be in the mix here and the GM's with such a short shelf life are rewarded by short term decisions and successes. Rarely do teams here make the hard patient decisions necessary to create a championship team. We saw it with our own Canucks when we realistically should have went scored earth but decided to try to compete while rebuilding. The Leafs are tragic and always going for it but lucked into lottery luck to get where they are. Winnipeg is perpetually rebuilding/retooling/going for it. Edmonton ... is pure whack #%%#$. Calgary is always putting their best effort out there even when their chances are slim. Ottawa has finally been the first team here in a long time to rebuild correctly and now Montreal is following suit ... although it looks like they are on the verge of being impatient as well. Teams here need to start with the simple decisions and make them with their collective brains and not their heart. Vis a vie Miller. Too many times we're able to convince ourselves that hey we might as well just go for it. In the States there is far less pressure to spin their wheels in mediocrity.
  17. Absolutely, just like any team. Plan for your core. You have to assume/plan as if you're going to do enough to make them stay. Some people try to limit the window by their contract lengths but I think that's a little silly. If people used that approach teams would go for it for a year or two and then blow it up continually. You would have 25 teams tanking hard every year and half the players not even in the league anymore.
  18. Who would have thought. Miller is borderline worthless.
