  1. A fifth rounder maybe . Brock doesn't do much for their hopes of being competitive. He's a support PP guy.
  2. Yeah, Petterson and Podkolzin making some strides plus a revamped roster ... especially in the bottom 6 and on defence can do wonders for the team. Especially if we get a couple young forwards back in trades. We could even be better with a sensibly structured NHL roster and playing expectations. I know Bruce hates it when players aren't committed defensively and he never had time to work on that. Let's not forget we're talking about a non playoff performance. It's not like it's that huge of a bar to reach. In addition someone has to fill JT's minutes so there is a tonne of opportunity for other players to step up, which is what every team needs for growth. Like stawns says it happens every year in the NHL. Teams come out of no where. It's all going to depend on the roster moves, training camp and team cohesion with Bruce at the helm. I personally see us finishing in a very similar fashion to last year. Not like it matters really.
  3. Forget about the step back Alf. It's a fools game and completely unimportant. We trade Miller for the best return, make some other moves in conjunction, draft well, and build for the near future. It's irrelevant at this point (except to you) whether we take a medium step back, a tiny step back, stay the same, or even make the playoffs . JR is interested in making this team perennially competitive in 2-4 years time. That's it! Forgot about this step back or not nonsense.
  4. Yeah no doubt. What about a more veteran and commanding presence as well.
  5. Need the 1st imo. It's a step up from the #26-31 Pitt usually has. Would immediately make if 4 legit prospects in what is a barren prospect pool besides Klimovich ... who is honestly kind of a longshot. Boner should make the club next year. Rathbone #15 (Yurov, Mintyukov, Kasper, Kulich, Miroshnichenko, Gauthier, Ohgren) #21 (Nazar, Bischel, Mateychuk, Chesley, Seamus, Geekie, Howard, Lambert) Klimovich
  6. Yeah, @DeNiro JR mentioned it several times that they also wanted to acquire picks but their main focus was on younger players closer to playing. I think this team absolutely needs it's first rounders and hopefully a couple more top picks in the next 2-3 years to produce some additional ELC players. It seems JR and Allvin have recognized they need to do this in order to sustain competitiveness in an ongoing basis moving forward. I feel this is an incredibly important part of the process for the plan JT and Allvin have laid out. An additional first rounder at minimum and hopefully another first or second would be incredibly important as a means of augmenting the core and our prospect pool moving forward. We need those high picks in our system sooner than later. After all the Sedin's need someone to work with. Not really the focus but that's all part of having this great new development plan set up. Gorilla Glue # 4 ... good stuff lol
  7. One team is the Pittsburgh Penguins and is on the tail end of one of the best hockey players to ever play the game and our team has made the playoffs once in 8 years.
  8. It actually does with Marino. Not flashy but a steady and solid RD which we desperately need. Signed for another 5 years at 4.4m. Not bad and although only 180lbs he gets it done with calm collected thinking. Kind of like Tanev. No way BB gets it done for Pitt, especially with his QO he has next to no value and I don't see them having much use for Garland either. I don't know if a tiny yet feisty winger does much for their playoff line-up. Maybe though who knows and the salaries offset. If we could do that plus a Miller trade for another RD (hopefully bigger) that would be the cats ass.
  9. I've been 100% on the trade Miller bandwagon but this is the time where I'm starting to realize more what our team will be like without him. Could definitely be a step back and then I also imagine a year of defending myself over the decision and what that looks like on the other end. Like you said though we're all just passionate Canucks fans for the most part. I too just want the best for the team whatever happens.
  10. Alright let's all do a complete flip and argue the other side today. @Alflives you're first!
  11. Typical zero patience children just want something/anything now and can't conceive to plan for a better future. Some people talk about not wanting to perpetually rebuild. Well if you walk up to a project that hasn't been initiated properly do you just carry on with an incorrect build because you're tired of working hard and don't have any patience. I'm sorry but that's just super lazy and ignorant.
  12. We could always recoup an asset at the trade deadline. I'm not overly worried on a one year deal at all.
  13. I meant in the sense that he's not in a position to get the 50 points wai lai is taking about where a Dman typically gets paid the type of salary he does. He also doesn't get the most prime offensive opportunities either. Even without that PP time and opportune starts he is able to deliver a rock solid #1LD role every where else. which is inherently valuable in itself and doesn't necessarily mean having two LD's at 7m is a big waste of cap.
  14. No not really but for the argument that in a sense he's playing in a lesser role that's OK too. It's not the end of the world to be paying a slight premium to ice a #1LD in the second pair. It's also excellent cover during injuries and penalties, or off games.
  15. Yeah we get it but chill out. We have an awesome all around #2ld slightly overpaid. Not much to do or be concerned about right now. Way bigger fish to fry. You probably also see him take a bigger role offensively with Myers gone.
  16. Move over Makar and Mackinnon. Canucks be stealing the show from here on out!
  17. Yeah, that would be a great type of partner for him. He's our third best defender though and his 6m salary should be allocated to the right type of players our team needs. We don't need him at this stage if we can find adequate replacements. Our goal should be the future of the RD in which Myers needs replacing anyway. Imagine that as our third pairing though. Now that would be an amazing luxury lol
  18. Yeah some people talk about Myers minutes but do we really need a minute muncher with Hughes and OEL both capable of doing that? Certainly we can find two replacements on TD who can mange those minutes and not spend entire shifts and game turning the puck over to the other team. Imo as soon as Myers pretends to be a #1 dman and plays lots of minutes while trying to single-handedly rush the puck, he looks terrible. I don't think his level of play will be particularly hard to replace personally. In fact I think our defence will be better with two simpler players who are quicker decision makers and better passers that defend better.
  19. But aren't Petey and Hughes already two truly elite players? Are they not the exact type of player you would hope to get from a top 1 through 5 pick you would get from tanking anyway? I don't see the sense in trading them for hopes just to get the same players again, they are only 22 ... what we need to do and what JR and Allvin are saying is that we need to find/use our other useful assets/cap space to find players that can grow with these two to build a contending team. We also need to hopefully acquire some picks and draft well in unison with that. If that doesn't work at all and we still suck then trade Bo and/or Petey (Hughes) in two years and go scorched earth then. There must be a way to build a good NHL team given a starting base of Hughes, Demko, Petterson, Podkolzin, Bo, and cap space. We will have Myers, Pearson, Dickinson, and Poolman(3), coming off the books in two years being replaced by younger, better players. It's not as bleak as you make it out to be. I think a lot of teams would be pretty happy with that for a start. Imo an elite winger to play in the top 6 while building the bottom 6 and D correctly is completely feasible, exciting, and the way to go for our team.
  20. I think he was saying Petey is a smart and a genuine person who will make a smart decision when the time comes. We have to trust that the team will have enough direction and traction that Petey will want to stay at that point without one singular player being the deciding factor. Having said that and in relation to your statement on not breaking the bank it almost feels like we're being held hostage to a JT signing in some respects that way. We can't compete without him, we don't have any leadership without him, Petey won't stay without him, etc. It doesn't feel like the right move if we're being forced into signing him. There must be other ways achieve the goal of a winning hockey team.
  21. So Miller is so great he is allowed to give up on plays and his teammates and it's W/E? You know a huge part of sports is taking constructive criticism and learning from it. Sorry but that is unacceptable behavior ... especially from a senior player who is supposed to be a leader on the team. Now don't get me wrong it's not the end of the world (lots of players do it) but why are some people completely blind to any faults JT may have? Some even go as far as to suggest that JT isn't susceptible to getting old. Either way JT really cleaned up his act and emerged as a true leader from January on out. I'd imagine working with Bruce allowed him to grow in this respect as well. In addition to a little discussion about that OT play. However I'm sure there is a way this team can move on and find leadership from other avenues. Yes we'd definitely lose a lot, especially in the short term but is laying out 8-9 mil on a bad long term contract really the only way that gets done?
  22. I know he's ranked lower down but I think Howard will surprise a lot of people. I don't know if it makes a difference but I watched a lot of the the under 18's, not scouting the players but just as an impartial viewer. I thought Howard was the guy on that team and the player that made the most impact. I kept thinking to myself who is this Howard guy making all the plays whose name keeps getting mentioned by the announcers every other second. That being said not my pick at 15 but if we had a third later1st rounder I'd be all over that. So many intriguing players. Yup, really huge upside on this player. I would totally be on board with this selection.
