Good points. I personally like players that defend by being smart with skating, positioning and stickwork. The game is much easier to play when you have the puck all the time. Like you said we need some stay at home guys. Benning tried to do this but he just failed to bring in the right stay at home guys. I'm starting to get on the Colin Miller train. His shot and toughness would really compliment QH well, but he will get lots of interest.

Yeah I agree. It's no cut to Hughes. Makar is just that good. It's all just labels anyway. These players aren't changing teams anytime soon. The goal he scored the other night was just pure skill that no other dman in the league possesses. Like wow, he almost outscored our entire team. That's massive.

Probably not ... but holy crap that would be one hell of a trifecta! Looks like Rathbone is going to get every chance this year so we'll see what we got there. 5"11, 190. Not terrible but you're right size needs to be taken into consideration. Pickering would be interesting if we acquire a later pick somehow but then we should be looking at Chesney or Casey there. Just curious what you're seeing in Snuggerud. Seems like a lame duck pick to me but I don't know much about him.
-
Yeah I'm also hoping we trade up for the betterment of the team but the number 15 pick is so exciting too. So many potential players and so many ways it could go. The draft itself would be super fun to watch just to see how it plays out. Of course we have a brand new group so we would get some insight to their process after the picks as well. Mateychuk is interesting. We could really use a Dman that has a good shot and scores goals himself. That really changes the dynamic. Quinn is awesome but not much of a goal scoring threat. I've heard Mateychuk almost plays like a 4th forward. We'd give other teams nightmares with our left 1-2 LD attack.

I think Casey is a reach at 15. Miro is cleared to resume training I can't see him being there but I think you have to take the chance if he is. Yurov would be intriguing, he seems to be a good overall hockey player ... just not exceptional at anything. I'm leery of the Lambert bust potential but I think he's likely gone by then from a team who fell in love with him last year. Trikozov appears to be a hard working get it done player but I think there will be better options. So yes lol. I would take Miro and maybe Yurov but would be seeing what else is available before selecting the rest. I'm liking Kulich a lot if he's there. Lots of potential LD's around our pick. Actually not a horrible idea to have a replacement for OEL in the pipeline. Timing would be right in line for that as OEL comes to the end of his contract.

He's only 5"8 165lbs ... pass take a RD

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Gawdzukes replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
100% we're going to need some top 6 help if we want to get to the next level. Guys like Pearson and Hoglander aren't going to cut it. Podz is looking great and he'll be a very valuable player but we don't really know whether he's going to be scoring many goals or not. Also no idea what will happen with Boeser. Just another area we're lacking in so yeah it's got to be BPA. Especially if we stay at 15 I don't want to be reaching for RD. We can draft all RD from rounds 3-7 if we want. Podz may turn out to be a fixture in the top 6 but we're going to need some high end goal scoring on top of what he brings. Petey needs a sniper on his wing who can read the play and keep up with him. How good would MacTavish be (provide some toughness too) ... damn. -
I'd be upset I think if we passed up on Kulich. Mateychuk would give us quite the D in several years though.

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks

https://canucksarmy.com/2022/06/03/projected-2nd-overall-pick-slafkovsky-canucks-interviewed-centre/ If you’re a Canucks fan, you likely haven’t done much reading about Juraj Slafkovsky. But on Friday morning’s 32 Thoughts Podcast, Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman spoke about a conversation they had with Slafkovsky, who is projected to be selected second overall at this year’s NHL Entry Draft in Montreal. The 18-year-old winger, ranked 1st overall among European skaters by NHL Central Scouting, told Friedman and Marek in a past conversation that a few teams he spoke with asked if the left winger had the ability to play centre. The two teams he remembered? The New Jersey Devils – who currently hold the second overall pick – and the Vancouver Canucks, who are slated to pick first at 15th. One of these things is not like the other. Here’s the full transcript of the conversation between Marek and Friedman. Now, whether this means the Canucks are trading up to second overall or not remains to be seen, and after using a phone-a-friend, we’d advise not holding your breath on that. “Yes, just in case you trade up,” an anonymous league executive told CanucksArmy when asked if it’s normal for a team drafting in the middle of the first round to interview a second overall pick. “You usually do quick meetings with the top 20 or so and then some guys you think will be in the mix around the time of your second or third selection. “Meeting with a number two projection doesn’t necessarily mean they’re trading for that pick. It certainly could be that! But it could also be just normal due diligence.” Now, the Devils have been linked to Canucks forward J.T. Miller in the past, and as Marek mentioned, Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald has reportedly made a list of players and assets around the league that his club would be willing to move the second overall pick for. If the Canucks are on that list at all, you have to assume Miller’s name is there. That being said, it’s likely wise if you don’t get your hopes up that the 6’4 Slafkovsky will be donning a Canucks uniform anytime soon. -
I love this style of thinking. Sure you might be right and all your desired moves might not immediately go down but you have to think big and keep the whole picture at the forefront. Having something similar to this should be the goal. Hopefully it all happens next year but anytime over the next two or three years would be acceptable as well.

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Gawdzukes replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Lol, it almost seems like you have the patience to see this team build for the future through a series of inter-layered moves while at the same time also admitting it may be a bit of a step back in one sense as well. Kind of like what we've been told time and again by the management team. Go figure. Crazy hey? And by patience I mean ... man you have exhibited exemplary patience. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks

I'd be over the moon with every player except Patrik or Ryan Murray (agreeing on Kakko and Byfield too young but 100% on either for Miller. I'd take a 80-90% chance of a surefire elite player any day of the week. The thing is it's almost impossible to build a team without a number of high end first round picks. This would be a rare opportunity to get one. I'd be all over that but perhaps I just have lowered expectations. I could understand when you questioned Heatl, Lundqvist, and a first, but wow second overall isn't good enough either? When this goes down you are going to to be extremely disappointed I fear. -

You clearly have no understanding of the value a top 3 pick holds. Like zero. Sorry to be blunt. You may not like it but any top 3 pick in any year is going to have absolutely massive franchise changing value. Like 29 year old JT Miller+ franchise changing value. There is also a multitude of other issues you're completely ignoring. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Gawdzukes replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Obviously you can understand the reasons why they wouldn't do it. It may not be in their best interest to sign an older player like Miller to enhance the team but it's also not illegal for them to do so. I guess we'll stop there as I can see anything else is pointless. -
Yeah I always knew we were going to pay a big price for the Cup run in 2011and subsequent bare cupboards and litany of NMC's. Then keeping the Sedin's while they slumbered to retirement stagnated the team too. I accepted all that but we just made too many shortcut moves in the end without a clear direction. The last couple years were especially bad. Too many middling swiss army knife type players (here coach do something with this crap) without an eye on future needs. Too many Pearson's, Poolman's, Dickinson's, Hamonic's, Hawryluk' s, Benn's, and Petan's but I digress as that's over now. How we didn't draft some more RD's I don't understand. Myrenburg, Woo, Carl Neill, and Matt Brassard, in 9 years. Definitely need to make the D a priority as well as some top 6 help for Petey (future), and bottom depth. At least 2-3 years ... possibly more. I don't have any concerns with ownership meddling. FA knows $$ and he knows it's time to sit back and let the new management team do their best. NO MORE SHORCUTS

What a tool lol. Dumb as a cowpie to boot.
-
Yep. People that know hockey will get we're most likely taking a step back with maybe a 25% chance we actually get better after all the moves and free agency is complete. Remember we weren't even a playoff team so the bar isn't that high. It doesn't really matter to me either way though really. Allvin and JR are just candy coating it for the kids that don't have the patience required to commit to a proper restructuring. They'll find out soon enough.

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Gawdzukes replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I don't quite get this line of non-understanding at all. Do you have a quote from that or is that just something you're thinking in your head? It sounds more like he was unsure of his free agent status coming up. They also have Hamilton and his $9 on RD already. It seems extremely odd to me that Fitzgerald wouldn't want to be competitive anytime soon or that you can't see why. They have tonnes or young raw talent Hughes, Hirschier, Sharongovich, Bratt, Mercer, Holtz, Hughes, Zacha, Foote, Boqvist, Hamilton, Bahl, Graves and have been re-tooling/re-building for years now. They also have a multitude of cap space coming off the books and JT Miller is exactly the type of player missing from that team. What on earth would they be waiting for? They were also rumored to have been open to trading the 5th overall. What would they have wanted in a trade if not a player of Miller's caliber? This is a quote from @mll the other day. They don't have to use #2 - they have prospects and other picks. Fitzgerald thinks they have too much of the same up front - ie not all prospects are going to be part of the team. Wants some straight line players and heavier skill to have a better mix of players. 5 years ago they made the playoffs with Hall winning the Hart and Hischier in his rookie season. They missed the following year and one of their co-owners Harris or Blitzer noted that they have picks and prospects so there's no reason they can't improve their roster. That off-season they went on to trade multiple picks for Gusev and Subban. They haven't made the playoffs since. It sounded like Fitzgerald bought himself some time - Shero was fired in January 2020 but got to wonder if there's not some pressure to get in. It's 2 seasons that they've pretty much let things just be up front, and as talented as some of their players are, they seem to need some more external help to reach that next step + they don't have the players in house to change the "too much of the same" up front. @mll like I said before First day of summer is June 21st, signing can officially be done July 13th = summer. Let's not over complicate this. Like when do you guys think the summer is ... September, October? -

Yeah I should be interesting to see what they do. Could take a lot of different paths. One thing I think is for sure. Their 1st is off the table in the Copp trade. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Gawdzukes replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Yeah, that was kind of my point. In a trade like this we may have to take on some perceived future value. Also known as some risk while we hope the assets we receive actually achieve that value we think they will. I don't know if there is any getting around that, or really if Allvin and JR even want to. If they have a good idea that a player will develop then they will take that risk. It's not like there are many surefire paths in the NHL. What we hope for is any player we get ... like a Chytil at least shows sign of progress like he has. Of course it's far better to have made the trade before that point. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Gawdzukes replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Yeah I think it would be insanely dumb if he's playing for us without a new contract. I'm sure we won't make that mistake. I guess I'm not really worried about the return either. I'm more looking forward to making some changes and having a future to look forward to and some real hockey, even if we're building for a couple of years. The entire league has been spinning it's wheels lately and it's been kind of a farce. Not that it was anyone's fault. The Canadian division was boring as hell though. Let's go! Get this thing moving PA! -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Gawdzukes replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Ha ha, Yeah I got some folks here all worked up when all I was trying to say was that Chytil had a little more prospective value then 2 months ago when people were slagging him as part of a trade. Thanks for talking me off the ledge. Hey hey, he will have some value to someone or he'll be back for a year I guess. That would be a huge failure on management in my opinion to just waste a year because we don't know what to do with Miller though. Time to turn the page and focus on the future. I really hope we pick up another first. This is the most I've been excited about the draft since Hughes. Probably more so then the Podkolzin year. There's easily 15-20 prospects I'd love to have on the team. We should get a real good player ... in the immortal words of JB -

I read an article the other day ... apparently we haven't drafted a RD in the first round since Brad Ferrence in 1997. The four remaining teams all have a drafted RD playing on their team and several have been traded for another RD they had drafted like Shattenkirk for Johnson. This would be huge for our franchise. Having Hughes and a stud on RD would set up up the franchise for years to come and we'd always have a solid base. Fixing the d doesn't take many moves ... but they have to be big.
