My dad does this all the time ... well the state weirdly wrong ideas part on purpose. I think it's some old guy trick ... except they themselves are the only one's they are tricking. One thing I'm certain of is Aquilini is not running the team so I hope that one stops soon. It's just a silly stance. Like @JM_ said we don't have enough info to judge so we'll just have to wait and see what our direction is. It would be stupid for them to lay out their whole game plan exactly for all to see. I swear, I'm getting so tired of people posting random tweets and trying to project them onto other topics like this. Like one guy posted the Nashville president says they weren't repeating 2017-2018 and that somehow means they are not allowed to trade for Miller, or in no way, shape, or form, would they ever possibly decide, or want to trade for him.

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Gawdzukes replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
In the big scheme of things, yes, we (probably will) may be worse immediately. JR and Allvin say they hope not but common sense tells us we will. JR and Allvin have repeatedly said this too. It doesn't really matter though as we are looking to fix the structural problems on this team first and foremost. Myers is also gone in two years anyway. The biggest key is to replace Myers/Poolman/Dermott with RD players who can bring this team to contender status. This can be accomplished at any time during the next two years and while now is ideal we need Myers gone in order to do it. The whole plan is to free up cap space and to use that to acquire good young players who also come with decent contracts by taking advantage of cash strapped teams. Then in two or three years while those new players are then contributing more than an older Miller and Myers we can use the extra cap space to bring in yet another high caliber player who better fits our timeline and team construction. If Myers is traded I'm betting we'll see a D brought in via a Miller trade, a Myers trade, or via Free Agency. I doubt we go into next year with the depth you suggested. Essentially we're taking the $15 mil allocated for Myers and Miller and spending that on 3/4 good young players who aren't winding down while our core is winding up. -

Yeah absolutely. I too have no problem with analytics. Definitely a useful tool. What I do have a problem with is some dork that's too lazy to actually watch hockey, or will inherently never understand the game even is he/she does, trying to inform me about a player or situation by flashing a card filled with numbers they don't understand. Those Jfresh cards are stupid. 76% defence ... give me a break you stupid lying full of sh!t a$$wad lol I just went and read through all the guidelines for interpretation and expectations for these cards etc. PURE RUBBISH! -

I remember watching a segment where they had on a GM or assistant GM or something talking about their own teams analytics and how they keep there own specialized stats that they feel way better predict things. For example if a player is a good finisher or not. I believe it was something around how the high danger chances are generally mis-understood by the general analytics community and that they had their own people watch and record their own data points with more intricate criteria. I think one major thing they added was whether the goalie had to move first from the center or side to make the save. They also took more categories like 2 feet out, 4feet out, etc.. Of course the exact criteria and the data itself is protected under non-disclosure agreements. So I would think we will have the same type of thing going with our management group. -

Haha, a smart person you are. Yeah this might be helpful in deciding who to keep out of say Garland, Pearson, and Hoglander in a third line role. See who keeps possession, plays stronger d, keeps the puck out of the net, etc., see who gives the biggest bang for the buck and I guess maybe even more valuable for obscure fourth line players. Although there would have to be some pretty amazing numbers there for me to change my pre-conceived interpretations based simply on watching them play. -

If you give me 20 million to pick 6 hockey players for my team I sure want to pick them myself instead of having some computer picking them for me based off analytics. I remember one year in an article a team was put together of an analytics all-star team with all the best players based on analytics. It totally sucked rocks compared to just picking an all star team based on the eye test. I think Steen was then considered the best player in the NHL by analytics metrics. -

Scott Walker is an absolute stud. I'll miss him and the character he brings. It's a little over the top but I love his take. Analytics dweebs are quite dumb and so are the inferences they try to make more often than not. Any person who uses the eye test also most likely uses an eye test combined with memory to get to the same results, except with the eye test you have context. For instance I have a pretty good idea Horvat is better at finishing chances in front of the net than Myers and I don't need some silly mathematical breakdown to tell me who I'm putting in front of the net on the PP because I've already run the numbers in my head and gathered that from watching him play. Then there is this stuff like what they call high danger chances which in reality is just shots close to the net. They have a real bad habit of labelling analytic measurements incorrectly with different labels then what they're actually measuring in a vain attempt to sound smart. Don't get me wrong analytics are useful but you need a good understanding of hockey to use them as a tool to narrow down finer points that one may be missing (over time) or just not notice in an eye test. Trying to claim one guy is a better forechecker because he he got 60% retrieval one game (3/5) and another guy got 20% (1/5) is silly without any context. To just think you can look at a spreadsheet and know the game without putting in any work is just wrong. -

I'm the guy on the left after we sign Miller for 8 x $8.75m -
Chiasson was great for us this year. He's definitely going to get signed somewhere for a similar role. However, judging from JR's comments about waiting until after UFA makes me think they don't plan on bringing him back. I would think 2 players(?) from a Miller deal may be forwards who can step in plus a UFA forward or two in addition, possibly Kuzmenko, or Karlsson, and Lockwood are all options before Chiasson. Having said that it's a pretty good fallback option. This is what I got prematurely assuming JT is traded. Horvat Petterson Boeser Garland Podkolzin Pearson Lammikko Hoglander Lockwood Dickinson Highmore (RFA) If we don't resign Highmore that would leave 3/4 forward spots to fill with trades or UFA. The best would be to dump Dickinson and sign Highmore to a modest deal if possible. I think it's touch and go with so many spots to fill but replacing Chiasson with some toughness is what I think JR and co will do.

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Gawdzukes replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Yes that's what I meant. Some people take these leaks as gospel and then speculate based on that or try to do things like condemn a possible trade when they really only have a tiny bit (5%) of the information. People should understand/remember most GM's are probably quite good at not blabbing their personal boardroom talk to others. In a situation like this where a player like Miller is involved there could easily be 50 different ways a deal could get made across 7-10 teams. Also things like missing a piece in a four player deal can make quite a difference. Sometimes insiders only hear parts of the info. This happens quite frequently where the additional parts to a rumor end up being quite significant and a good trade in the end. I should rephrase my statement though. Yes some of them have real connections but we have no way of verifying how accurate any of these statements are so we should be taking them all with a grain of salt. Some people are so down and convinced we'll get nothing for JT based on some random tweet out of New York 2/3 months ago. At the end of of the day Miller is a hell of a player and definitely worth some good parts in a trade. We'll have to see what happens but I believe the return will both be good and probably contain some surprise parts as well. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Gawdzukes replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
One thing that perplexes me is that people really seem to be biting on all these rumors out there and seem to think that GM's announce all their business and possible trades as tweets... But c'mon there is no groundbreaking journalism going on here. These guys are just people like us who can use google and imagine possible trades, and then totally make this stuff up. I wouldn't get to wrapped up into what the media reports. They're really not part of the process at all and are just guessing like we are. I would imagine if you took all trade rumors and compared them to actual trades they're less than 5% accurate over time. Have faith Jimmy. Maybe some of the reports are even accurate and that's why we haven't pulled the trigger yet but there is a real possibility the trade will look nothing like what's being reported and we do indeed get a more established player back like you wish. One thing does seem certain our management has repeatedly indicated our window is 2 or more years away so some logical deduction does make it seem like JT is on the way out the door. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Gawdzukes replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Miller also grew up in Pittsburgh or close to I believe. I think he went to school there so I think Pitt might be high on his list of destinations. He'd be playing on a team with a couple of the best players in the world and a group who definitely want to be contending for a CUP every single year in the foreseeable future. What's not to like there? Familiarity and a winning culture. I'm sure Miller is getting tired of not having a chance to win every year. Also, happy belated page 420 to you and @stawns -
We do not need to tear it down OR make big trades
Gawdzukes replied to MtnHockeyGuy's topic in Canucks Talk
Well said. Your top players should be setting an example and showing the younger players how to play. Miller's defensive lapses and yes "gambling" continually to score points at the expense of goals against was a horrible example this year. Especially in the first 50-60 games where no one on the outside even cared or really questioned his play much. Back then he was routinely doing no look spinaramas and through the leg passes to no one in his own end. To his credit he cleaned it up somewhat at the end of the year. Still, not a good showing in that category. -

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Gawdzukes replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
This is what I was wondering. What on earth does the media have to do with making trades? Nothing, they just report news and barely know what trades will happen beforehand. I'm pretty sure you can make a trade in the NHL without the media suggesting it first lol. -

But to be honest he kind of sucks at moving the puck and is a complete adventure in the offensive zone. He's a big body who is good at playing the body but horrible at moving the puck in high paced situations. He's also a good PKer as size is a huge attribute but his value is limited in that he is having more and more problems making good decisions under pressure. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Gawdzukes replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I was going to post the same thing in response to earlier conversation. If this player is getting 19 goals in extremely limited situations and 14 minutes a night and at only 20 years old imagine what he could do in the future. With his pedigree and past performance it's a decent bet he can put up perennial 30ish goal seasons and high point totals as he adapts to the league and gets more opportunity. He's also 6'2 196 so we're talking about a super skilled guy with size and skating who can score. The more I think about it this should be a no brainer move if it's ever on the table. Is there risk, sure but I don't think you're going to see much better in terms of talent in any other deal. Here is a a scouting report excerpt. https://www.thedraftanalyst.com/2020-nhl-draft/2020-draft-profile-lw-alexis-lafreniere/ Scouting Report The crown jewel of the 2020 draft class, Lafreniere delivered a season for the ages of any major junior player, let alone one who is only 18 years old. After dominating the under-18 Ivan Hlinka and winning the 2019 CHL Player of the Year Award, Lafreniere won the QMJHL scoring title and earned MVP honors at the U20 world junior championship (10 points in 5 games) in leading Canada to gold. Not only is he a virtual lock to become the first French-Canadian skater to go first overall since Vincent Lecavalier in 1998, but he joined Sidney Crosby as the only two pre-draft prospects to win CHL MVP more than once. Lafreniere also is a team-first leader who has made a profound impact on Rimouski, turning them from a 59-point doormat in 2016-17 to back-to-back playoff seasons of 90+ points. A gifted and versatile scoring winger with outstanding hockey sense and the ability to elevate his game when the situation calls for it, Lafreniere possesses many traits that scream elite and potential NHL superstar. From his deadly wrist shot to his superior playmaking and vision, the St. Eustache native checks every block imaginable when it comes to possessing the puck. What makes Lafreniere unique, however, is his insanely high compete level, tenacity on the puck, physicality, and selflessness. Play him on a line with equally heralded or accomplished prospects, and he’ll make it a point to tap into their strengths rather than make himself the center of attention. Lafreniere is an excellent skater in all directions, but his powerful stride allows him to separate from opponents in open ice. It’s rare to see a winger nearing 200 pounds of any age to be able to turn on the jets immediately following a physical battle, but Lafreniere’s foot speed, long stride, and expert anticipation places him in open ice with a numbers advantage multiple times a period, let alone an entire game. Playing in a junior league has something to do with that, but there no reason to believe his escapability in close contact won’t translate to success within the trenches of NHL warfare, where time and space are earned the hard way. Lafreniere can tailor his game to fit any style of play, and his ability to play physical causes significant matchup problems for smaller opponents. Lafreniere can be used in every situation, and his ability to dominate the puck no matter the in-game environment creates swaths of open ice for his mates. Lafreniere is an incredibly unselfish player, and his youthful exuberance when coupled with his physicality reveal a player of the throwback variety. Lafreniere seems to understand and execute set-plays on or off the puck, and he can be counted on as a reliable and tenacious forechecker who creates turnovers in the neutral zone. Although the volume of high-end prospects being developed out of the QMJHL has slowed down, Lafreniere is at the very top of an elite crop of Quebec Leaguers poised to garner the attention of scouts from all over North American and Europe. The top slot among 2020 draft hopefuls was Lafreniere’s to lose for several years, and never once did he relinquish it. -

An experienced voice that knows the truth. Thanks Joe! -
I'm not surprised at all. The ship has sailed. He wasted to much time toiling away in Russia. There is no way he can catch up on all the time lost. He was horribly out of shape at 22, which is kind of a joke in itself, but now 5 years later how much worse will he be now? Combine that with the fact he is too good/entitled to work on his conditioning in the AHL and you have a non-starter. There is none. It's pure delusion. He was barely good enough to make our absolutely horrible defence 5 years ago as a fringe 5/6/extra. If he wanted to play in the NHL he needed to keep getting better and keep playing and learning his trade in the NHL like any normal rookie. Not sipping Vodka and getting fat in Russia playing subpar hockey. He would need to go in and prove himself on limited minutes and healthy scratches for a year or two like he should have done in the beginning. He doesn't have a sliver of the drive or sacrifice required to do so now. Really he never did.

Are you trying to tell me just missing the playoffs every year isn't good enough for you? I'm amazed at the number of posters here that don't care (or see the need) about making the team better. It seems they're more partial to Miller than the team.
