Yes. If we want to be smart we make them now. This team is not good enough. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks

I laughed and laughed. Hard to have a meaningful conversation sometimes. Boeser is like the definition of the player the Rangers don't want. Slower, not overly physical snake bitten winger, doesn't PK, due for a difficult over-priced contract negotiation. -

It's been fun. Good honest arguing. Never get that week back! -
Agreed, that game sucked. The timing is perfect though as you say. We will see but I feel we're going to come up a bit short. For me I definitely think the lack of scoring is directly related to our lack of defence quality. For most of the game we're only playing with 4 players (or less) essentially. That's why our forwards aren't scoring. They spend most of the time defending or chasing down errant pucks from our defence who can't make high level hockey plays. The thing with Hamonic is it will probably take him 5-10 games to get up to speed. Tough to do when you're basically at a must win point. One way or other it's going to be exciting down the stretch.

Irrevocable damage from Green? These people are such fools that say that. That's only one reason I have that moron on block. I mean he's a bad coach fine. But he's caused the best players in the world irreparable damage by talking hockey to them? C'mon ... just too stupid it's not like it's the early 80's and he's literally beating them physically or stealing their souls with cruel mental whiplashing. It's Green, he couldn't hurt a fly, it looks like he could kill a mean bottle of bourbon and get drunk stupid ... but kill someone's career with bad coaching? Bobby Orr ... done in by repeated knee injuries, Vladimir Konstantinov almost died in a horrific car crash and never walked again, Pelle Lindbergh did die in a car crash, Petterson ... exposed to bad systems. All good players careers who ended too early. RIP Anyways got off topic a bit there sorry. I don't know if just having a tough guy would work with Petterson. I don't think it's the intimidation or hits per se he has trouble with. He hasn't really missed many games with the Matheson or Kotkavowelmi guy hits. A tough player that can create space and has the skill and speed would be great. Mark Stone's are hard to find though. You know upon reflection I'm a little back and fourth on the issue. Petterson is actually tied for 3rd most points on the team and fourth in goals. He hurt himself by not being at training camp and he's coming off a pretty serious wrist injury. His play of late has been slightly encouraging. I'm willing to give him a mulligan after this year. I'm guessing he absolutely works his butt off this summer and we see the results next year.

I'd trade him for Miller and a first. Hell I'll even throw in Motte. -

You're missing the point. 3 good young players in the trade who turned our franchise around. And Miller is even better at this stage you say. -

Agree to disagree then. I understand your side of the argument but you don't seem willing to listen to what the rest of us are saying. That's fine. I don't think the core sucks as much as it's monetarily improbable to keep them together. The core could do it, but I'm not convinced they can either, and we're strapped for assets moving forward. One think is certain, if we keep Miller this team will have less overall talent in 1.25 years. That's the dilemma. I'm personally tired of being a middling "wildcard team" every year and retaining all of our players for a weak playoff push only to lose those players for nothing. Thankfully we have a GM who agrees. Keep Miller, don't keep Miller I'll let him make the decision. I'm just happy we have a leader who understands the concepts the rest of us have been laying out here and can appreciate all the necessary angles. You seem really enamored by the team since BB took over. Perhaps it's clouding your judgement? To me they aren't the third best team in the West at the .700 you claim. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks

1. It's possible but he may not care either. Not enough to stay anyway. 2. It's possible again although he doesn't appear overly chummy with anyone. It's also a horrible way to choose where to play when your buddies can be traded at any time. Liking the team a lot and wanting to win would be different. But c'mon is JT looking at the team thinking we're contenders? Doubtful in my opinion, he sure doesn't show it. 3. While Vancouver may be a big city in Canada sorry to burst the bubble but it's small market compared to the USA. It's a coastal city and very beautiful which is nice but it also has crappy weather. Unless Miller and his family absolutely love fishing, camping, and really long highways the city probably isn't a huge draw. While being more desirable than the other Canadian cities it probably pales to living and being in an American market. 4. Think of it on a personal level for JT. He never asked to be traded here. He has never come out and made any overly glowing statements about Vancouver, or even hinted remotely that his heart was here and he would like to stay. It's far more likely he'd desire a return to the USA, for a myriad of reasons. I also can't imagine why he wouldn't be somewhat or very concerned about money. It's kind of how a hockey player is defined. I'm sure he wants to get as much as he can. It's an indicator of how good you are when comparing players. Sort of like a badge of honor. It's also for his wife and kids future. Normal people don't just give up millions of dollars, and they aren't bad people as a result. Unless of course you know something the rest of us don't there seem to be more reasons for him to go. I guess the bottom line is unless he states he wants to be here and will do what it takes to do that you would have to silly to not seriously consider trading him. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks

You seem to have trouble grasping the complexities of the salary cap and the resulting difficulties all teams go through. None of those players listed were let go because they were unwanted. They were cap casualties. You can't just keep everyone. Several of these guys were even offered contracts. Unfortunately that's hockey. New management is in and they are very wary of the impending cap crunch, and they are not happy with the old set-up. Neither am I and neither are many other posters. It's as simple as that. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks

No not at all. I mean how it is absolutely clear as day that changes need to be made to make this team perennially competitive. Yet people like yourself want to forgo what's necessary and try to win now with an inferior team. That's Impatience!!! Not to mention this is JB's core and he's no longer the GM. See you've got it backwards. Being patient in this case doesn't mean giving your core forever to work it out at all costs. It means making the necessary changes when problems are identified and having the resolve to accept the time it takes to see them through. Even if that puts you one step back to take two ahead. It's easy to just put your ears back and forge ahead but a lot more difficult to do the right thing. -

Yes exactly. There is nothing wrong with making a complex decision and carrying out a plan for long-term success... for once. In comparison we've seen this organization cater to short term fan impatience over and over and over again. -

Great post. This is what has become painfully honest to me as well. We need to find bonified rd despite the fact they are tough to acquire. It's so frustrating watching other teams put out there best five players 7 out of the last 10 minutes and we can only match with out best 4, plus Myers, Poolman, or Schenn. We need guys that can play 2 way hockey in all situations. We need at least one in every position at the very least. It's costly but that's where Miller comes in. -

Then you trade one for a King's ransom if we can't afford it. Must mean we have other good players elsewhere in the line-up. I'm not really invested emotionally in this so if they go your way I won't be upset. I'm just wanting the best for the team. One thing I do know is ELC players who can drive the team is a huge part of being able to win in the NHL. This is mostly because the salary cap only allows each team to acquire so much talent. Another way to acquire a larger share of cheaper talent at one time is to trade older established players for multiple such assets who will grow into better players. Then add them to current maturing players when you are ready to compete. I guess you think we're very close to contending. That's fine I don't think we really are despite this .700 stint of hockey. It seems a little short sighted. Since J.R. publicly stated this team needs more I've re-evaluated and tend to agree. We've been down the road you're suggesting always thinking we're right on the cusp and not acquiring assets the right way. As a fan I would like to try a different/better approach for a change. On the other hand we can hope this current team minus Boeser or Bo takes a big step in the next 3 years. -
Apparently we're a Cup contender already. Who knew? You call that an upgrade on RD? Motte on the second line? Klimovich playing already? That's a pretty awful looking team and our biggest problem RD still hasn't been addressed. You also have no pressbox players and zero flexibility. I don't want the job of making these decisions but I'm sure glad you don't. Joking but if it goes your way I'll be massively surprised. Also, Miller isn't re-signing here so you'll have to replace him via UFA or elc.

JT Miller's Next Contract - Is it gonna be that high?
Gawdzukes replied to HKSR's topic in Canucks Talk
Sorry I don't think you see the big picture at all. You are thinking this is a .700 hockey team next year after 20 games. That's a huge gamble I wouldn't be willing to take. It's not like we're the class of the league rolling over everyone. You also don't seem to be taking into account that we're going to lose a lot of (key) players due to cap restraints, including Miller when he re-signs somewhere else anyway. -
JT Miller's Next Contract - Is it gonna be that high?
Gawdzukes replied to HKSR's topic in Canucks Talk
So you basically think we should just go for it every single year then until we win it? That didn't work so well the last 10 years. In 2011 that was a strong team with great veteran players on it. Us not so much. The thing is when was the last time we made a move from strength and increased the core value of our team? The Sedin's, Burrows, Hansen, Ehrhoff, Higgins, Edler, Tanev, Toffoli, Markstrom. We got nothing or next to nothing for all of these guys because we were 'going for it'. Usually I'm not one to kick the can down the road if there's a chance but just 3 months ago this team was in utter ruins. We fired the coaches, all the management and made a commitment to the future. I ripped off the emotional band-aid at the start of the season and re-upped that when new people came in. If there was ever a time to not go for it and make a non emotional move for the future it's now. Good teams do this. If not now, when (in 10 more years when Miller's contract finally runs out)? -

The flip side is you do what we've always done and what you propose to do. Go for it with a mediocre team because we're impatient and then end up restarting in two to three years anyway because we continually bleed assets away. You can believe this resurgence is a reminder that we're a Cup team but JR, myself, and many others just don't see it. Not that the team hasn't played alright or anything but some of us want to see it done correctly for once. -

To be honest the only thing I can imagine is players like Petey, Miller, Boeser, Hughes, simply refuse to listen to anyone and keep doing it their way. Not so much Hughes but the other 3 dolts for sure. -

JT Miller's Next Contract - Is it gonna be that high?
Gawdzukes replied to HKSR's topic in Canucks Talk
Sorry Goal but no way we should hang onto him for a playoff push and trade him next year. The time is now to maximize assets ... like we can't be wasting opportunities like this when we don't have enough assets to play around. One may give credit to the team playing well but that doesn't mean you sacrifice the future and the betterment of the team for it. Remember they're still in a dogfight to even make the playoffs. A huge, 'If'. Even if we squeak in it doesn't change the fact we're strapped for cash, and assets moving forward. Miller fixes both of those things (in a real way) moving down the road. Tough decisions but really pretty easy in my mind. As soon as JR was brought in the most sensible direction became trading Miller, it just took some people a bit to realize it, and some haven't gotten there yet. Yeah the thing is if this was still Bennings team we'd all be hanging on to every Miller hope knowing we are seeing it out one way or another. He wouldn't trade his best player and blow up his own team, nor would we expect him to. However, since JR has openly come in and said we're simply not good enough the writing is on the wall for anyone that wants to read it. It would be great in an ideal world to hang onto him for at least one more year, especially with the recent run of things. Though at the same time it would be rather silly or naïve to think this team has suddenly figured it all out because of 1.5 months of hockey, and then to basically be married to the same team for the foreseeable future as a result. Unfortunately the decision needs to be made this TDL. I can't see JR staying the same route we have now with no flexibility because we were chasing a pretty slim playoff hope.
