You're both welcome to disagree...but you'd be wrong ;) In no way am I suggesting Myers is amaze-balls...but appropriately partnered, in an appropriate role, with proper systems and puck support he would look "ok" to decent (vs the train wreck/chaos giraffe we got most of the time).

Schmidt was no different. Looked good in VGK, lost here and fine in WPG.

Gudbranson was fine properly partnered/role in CAL as well.

Good management puts players in position to succeed (even if they're not all stars/amaze-balls). We utterly failed at that the vast majority of Myers time here (short of his brief time playing opposite Edler). And Myers was not alone there. It's a HUGE element, vast swaths of CDC overlook.

    Ayyup.

I don't disagree that he wasn't put in the best position, along with others, but your defence is paper thin lol.

but appropriately partnered, in an appropriate role, with proper systems and puck support he would look "ok" to decent (vs the train wreck/chaos giraffe we got most of the time).

So if he gets those simple (not at all) 4 conditions met he might anywhere from "ok" to "not complete crap"? That is a lot of help and what ifs and kind of sounds the same as sucks to me. :P Maybe I should get the skates out myself?

Haha, just joking, I'm more than willing to be wrong here though and I hope I am. Obviously he's not quite as horrid as he is sometimes portrayed. However, he's also shown nothing at all on the ice in the last number of years to suggest even in limited minutes he's as good as some others hope he'll be. In fact just the opposite I think he's closer to giraffe than an even otter myself.

Sometimes players have a resurgence when put back in a favorable position. Sometimes they don't and time has just simply passed them by. We shall see what happens.

Myers played 2nd most even strength minutes behind Hughes, but was infrequently partnered with Hughes last year.  He played mostly with an injured OEL who couldn’t move or even flip the puck up the glass out of the zone last year.

He’s been miscast as a shutdown D - and actually held his own when paired with Edler and a healthy OEL.

No one is saying he’s worth a 6 mil cap hit but if he’s partnered with Cole or Soucy… or deployed as a 3rd pairing guy in reduced minutes, there’s a lot of reason to think he has a good year.  He’s had 2 good seasons with us.  It’s not like he’s sucked the whole time. That’s 100% false.

People say he was good that one year with OEL in Boudreau's first year. Apparently the analytics even said he had a good year I've heard people argue. I couldn't disagree more. All I saw that year, and I watched every game, was pure rubbish. His play made me want to  with his putrid giveaways, and the brain dead plays made him an easy target for the opposition.. He was alright the first year and in the bubble. The rest was simply awful imo. I sure hope he plays so little he's not giving away a goal or two a game this year or we're sunk.

We’ve seen way too many “mistakes” that he made too many times for this to be that. The guy is a terrible player. I’m done with his daily snow angels, being constantly caught out of position and lack of awareness.

If your memory and or eyesight is an Issue then check out the the stats. He and OEL were the WORST defensive pairings in the ENTIRE NHL. We literally lost games because of these 2 numpties,

    Don’t even go there.

Also, Schmidt is a decent player, just not a good fit here. He was nowhere near bad. He was here for 5 minutes while we saw chaos Giraffe for 5 years where he continued to get worse.

    Sup Giraffe GIF

Yup, I kind of have to agree. Myers was decent on the third line years ago in Winnipeg playing a depth role and adding hard to pay against size on their roster. A 3 year deal at $4 mil would have been alright. These last years were always going to suck. He's lost some speed but more so mobility and his decision making is bottom of the barrel. He's a liability of out there now in his career and I wouldn't sign him for any price. We'll see about all these playing too many minutes theories but I fear we're going to see more of the same. He just flat out sucks.

I think this is the draft where we could solidify the future of our defence for the next decade. It is looking like an incredible class for dmen.

    Levshunov

    Dickinson

    Sahlin Wallenius

    Jiricek

    Solberg

    Mews

    Skahan

    Kiviharju

    Elick

    Hutson

    Parekh

    Buium

    Yakemchuk

    Vaisanen

    Emery

    Whipple

Assuming we pick 10-20, we’ll get a stud to go along Hughes, Willander, Hronek, Pettersson, Brzustewicz, Hirose.

But we want to make absolutely sure we don't get too many good dmen ... right?

Yes exactly.    At least Miller threw hits too.   Horvat became a selfish player his last year with us, can't really blame him either, because he wasn't before that.   Was pretty mediocre under Greens system play, but look at his linemates.    Did have one great series against St. Louis.    Was hoping that IF we made the playoffs, that rep would continue.   Horvat was just the best we had at the time.    If we had better, not sure he would have got the C.  I never saw Linden watch a player get rubbed out or take a cheap shot, and just skate away like it's just part of the game, he'd be in a scrum right away.    That part or pacifism, rubbed me wrong.   I'm also tired of that type of Captain.   Hope QHs can at least inspire his crew to come to his rescue when needed.    The entire bench would stand up and start screaming when Linden was in trouble.   Remember a game when Sandy McCarthy had him turtled and was pounding away at his kidneys.   Gino (his friend) sure took exception to that.

Horvat got what he wanted.   And will be a rich rich man as a result, no cups in his future.

I think this is a load of baloney created by butthurt fans. The entire team was absolute garbage defensively for 3/4 of the year, and for many years previous to that. Miller was his typical horrible self defensively ... far worse than Bo to start the year. Also looked horribly out of shape. Kuzmenko probably still doesn't know who Demko or Martin are. Boeser was absolutely brutal with zero defensive commitment as usual, and Hoglander, and Podkolzin were rubbish as well. Only our fourth line and Mik showed any defensive chops. Bo played the same game he always played, he just obviously spent time working on goal scoring in the offseason ... which shouldn't be viewed as a negative trait. That's just a ridiculous take by fans here. Criticizing a player because he worked his ass off to help the team score more goals ... as a forward :picard:

Among this group of forwards who collectively had zero interest in the defensive side of the game Bo was no different than anyone else. Maybe he decided not to try to save everyone else's ass for a change but this narrative doesn't really hold water on a team chock full of lazy back checkers who as a unit were simply abysmal.

Alright, got that off my chest. Moving on.

I hope fans can show class. We cheered for Bo when he was a Canuck. As far as I can tell, he worked hard and did his job well as player and as captain - he doesn't all of a sudden become a piece of crap just because he's wearing a different uniform. He didn't screw us over or anything - we got good value for him in the trade. He had to do what he thought was right for him and his family. Let's respect that and be respectful.

Yeah I hope so too. Man the whole thing with Bo has frankly been very embarrassing as a Canucks fan and it's getting beyond annoying to be honest.

What a group of losers who are putting him down and throwing insults around about his commitment to the team, his play, and even calling him greedy. Just a spoiled group of individuals ... if we are fans like that we truly don't deserve anything good for this franchise. Any criticism should be levelled where it belongs. On management for putting together an absolute sh!t team for a decade straight after thrusting the Captaincy on him and giving him nothing but garbage line mates and the worst defence in the league for years running.

If I have to hear that stupid "I'll tell you for free", comment one more time I tell you I'am going to freaking lose it. It's so embarrassing. It's like when you're out with a friend who is lipping off an adversary but everything he/she says is cringe worthy and makes you look stupid. You just wish they would shut up. Please stop people, you look like petty 5 year olds with snot running down their face. Sounds like those goofs who recite the Benning ran out of time quotes. Such simpletons.

    End rant/ :frantic:

Pearson is coming off as well FWIW. Myers and Pearson's expiring cap should easily cover raises for Petey, Hronek and the increase (~$2.4m) of the OEL buyout). Cole and Beau's cap, plus whatever the cap goes up, gives us cash to spend on hopefully another (actually complementary) top 4 D, fill out winger depth (along with some kids) etc. It's really not that bad.

Not lone. I was screaming for us to add what it took to Virtanen to get the rumoured to be available Bennett out of CAL for him. How good would Bennett have looked on this team?!

Yup, I remember you saying that repeatedly and it seemed like a real good idea. :(

Lol what you described is essentially Juulsen (I don't think Myers and Hughes are a quality fit).  Unless teams like LA or CBJ have RD without waiver exemption (e.g. if they happen to not want Peeke anymore) then maybe they would move someone who would be an improvement on a #6?  But even then I'd say don't keep your hopes up, either they don't pan out or you're just looking for your run of the mill right-handed muscle that can move some and not be a defensive liability but it's probably gonna be slim pickings (highly doubt any well respected prospect will slip through another organization's cracks without them trading them first).  Props to Allvin and the crew if they have such a fine tooth comb to spot a value flyer.

Yeah I get it but why wouldn't you keep your eyes open and look for an upgrade if an opportunity presents itself? Otherwise just go with what we have. I think there are a number of guys that could fit on the team better than the rubbish Benning collected in his tenure. We have at least one starting position that is completely up for grabs.

In my mind that's what teams should be doing every year. Looking to upgrade around the fringes if possible. With such a crap group of defenceman it's something we should have done in the past but JB was locked in to his garbage collection.

So you're saying we should go for another Juulsen or Burroughs instead of a Cole or Soucy?

No no, we should look for players on waivers that can be a number #6, #7, or #8, and possibly play with QH. Possible upgrades on Myers, Juulsen, Wolanin, and Irwin. Other teams have players in similar situations to Woo. Instead of filling our #7 and #8 spots with a player like Woo, Juulsen, Rathbone (blah) or Johanssen, if they can be upgraded we should be active. I think they could. I'd keep Irwin for sure and probably Wolanin, but at the very least look to fill #8 on a waiver claim. It's really the first time in years we have the luxury of doing so.

Cole and Soucy will definitely be regulars imo. Their ability to play both sides allows us to target the best of either RD or LD on the waiver.

If Woo takes a step, I’ll be ecstatic. Good 2nd round karma we need for (at least once) using that pick on a defender.

Also - great point on premium prospects like Jiricek. I was clearly too cynical to include that as an option, but that would be ideal

We definitely could use some good karma. Would be awesome for the amount of them we through away but we definitely deserve some good luck from other areas we got screwed in.

I definitely would like to see a big play for a premiere asset. A first and Lekkerimaki for Jiricek, or Nemec, maybe Schnieder, or that caliber of asset. Would be awesome to have that in place and be able to play Willander on the third line for a year or two while Hronek is playing out his 4 or 5 year deal. Then we would have a natural succession plan in place. It would be hard to part with the first rounder though. We are so short on assets as it is but we need to improve on both fronts.

Sorry - had a glitch and had to re-create the original (4) poll questions.

I changed my answer to Woo with an extended look but I don't think they should just give him a bunch of rope. So in that sense I hope he gets an extended look because he comes into camp and blows everyone away. I expect Cole to be there though and Irwin or Wolanin to play on the LD with Myers.

As far as a Hughes partner I went with a younger prospect but I would hope for somebody better than Peeke like a Schnieder, R. Anderson, or Jiricek, but maybe a guy like Pionk would also be good. As would Nemec, or Grans, or Jokiharju, from Buffalo. Maybe I should change my vote to unproven (but high pedigree) young player. The other alternative is to find a high profile vet with two or three years left and time it with the Willander arrrival.

I would totally agree. Signing Mik sort of made sense, but the dollars didn't. What bugs me is Kuz was signed BEFORE Mik. I'm not sure they felt they were taking a gamble with Kuz, and wasn't sure it was going to work out? It seems to me once they signed Kuz, even for one year. They really didn't need to sign Mik. They should have showed more restraint in keeping the cap down. Could we use a PK'er that's a scoring threat? Absolutely. But $4.75 million per season for 4 years. Ouch. I'm really hoping when Mik comes back he's fully healthy and show he's worth every penny, Because he seems like a great guy. But the team needs some flexibility with the cap.

Exactly. It's questionable money for a full season but at ~45 games a year. Blech!

I have been a fan for 40 years +/- I can see the direction things are headed the short sighted moves the wasted draft picks and lack of vision. This does not make me less of a fan. I cheered for the Canucks through the Keenan years and the Benning years and now the Alvin years. Just because I don't love everything they do does not make me a bandwagoner. The OEL buy out was impatient. If they had waited a year the penalty would have been much more manageable but this mgmt much like the last is living day to day. This year we should be stockpiling picks and drafting top 3 not making a half hearted last ditch one and done cinderella run at the playoffs if all the stars align just right and Demko miraculously makes it through the season un injured. We what buy at the deadline? This is moronic. They are going to waste this cores prime by not taking their medicine and cultivating the farm. Lekkerimaki and Willander coming in on ELC's in 3 years are not enough to propel us to contenders. Having my eyes open and having criticism of what I see to be mortgaging our future for a mediocre present does not make me less of a fan of our club. Compounding our cap problems by loading up our wings is not the change we need. We have nearly 30m spent on wingers and no sand paper in our top 9. What's going to happen if we actually make the playoffs? As a true fan I don't want to be sold this snake oil I'm willing to go through the lows to reach the highs.

Hasek carried his teams for sure. Tretiak was 100% the product of great clubs in front of him. Mishkin was a better goalie. Tretiak was hyped up. He was an average goalie. Demko is a great goalie and a hell of a lot better than Tretiak.

I was pretty young for Tretiak but damn I remember him shutting the door on the competition a couple times. Maybe I was young and impressionable. Just wait ... was I young once ... I can't remember. :frantic:

The majority of athletic knee braces aren't designed to "reduce any stress anywhere else", it's designed to do the exact opposite. It activates haptic preceptors of the surrounding muscles so they engage more strongly to stabilize the joint in question on top of their intended function of movement. There are types of braces like hinge braces that do ad significant tensile support to a joint, but those aren't normally used in sport situations and more common during the rehabilitation processes. I have seen exceptions to this, but those are outlying situations, not the norm like you seem to be describing in your post.

There are many commonly broken bones that can function at a normal or near normal level with the only side effect being pain with no long term side effects to the surround tissue or mechanism of movement. Yes, pain can sometimes reduce the overall athletic output of a high level athletes, but often that reduced output is still higher then others on the team. That's why we see top tier players play through broken bones all the time in playoff type situations.

Yeah this is true. I played with a guy when I was younger who played for a year and a half with a a torn ACL (I think it was ACL, could have been MCL). Anyways by the time he got around to getting a surgery date he had messed up his other ligaments somewhat. In addition like you mentioned in your other post he actually changed his body mechanics so much to compensate he was not the same player moving forward and always had mobility issues on that knee, even after it was fixed. Now being this is professional NHL hockey I wouldn't have as much concern about that but it's definitely something to be aware of.
