  1. Think two years from now. -Eriksson, Baertschi, etc. will be off the books -Guys like Markstrom and Tanev’s contracts will possibly turn into liabilities between now and then given their age and ailing bodies -The Canucks have young defensemen in their system (Juolevi, etc.) that are ready to take the place of guys like Stecher -Edler will be gone after this season.
  2. 1) “and now we regressed big time.” -You DO realize that Benning could have kept all of Markstrom, Toffoli and Tanev had he truly wanted to right? (Ie packaging sweeteners to get rid of bad contracts) So why didn’t he? 2) These bad/transitional contracts that Benning signed......what impact did it have on the kids in our system? Did the presence of these bad contracts allow for kids to develop their games with lesser roles? 3) Is progression always linear? 4) Name me one team that HASN”T struggled for 5-7 years during a developmental period. Look at the rest of the teams in our division. What has their journeys been like the past 20 years? What about the top teams in the league right now? What has their journeys been like over the past 20 years?
  3. He drafted good players AND he developed them well. Notice how many of our drafted prospects have either successfully transitioned to the big club or are knocking on the door? A major reason for this is because the kids in the system were never “rushed” into any roles that were beyond their levels. The kids drafted and/or brought into our system via trade (Motte) were placed in roles that were suitable to their level.........and the big reason why the Canucks were able to do this WAS because of the overpaid/transitional contracts that were brought in (Eriksson, Sutter, Myers, Beagle, Roussel, etc.) -Without Eriksson, Virtanen inappropriately plays on the top 6 despite not being ready. -without Prust, Brendan Gaunce inappropriately makes team and plays in a role that he’s not ready for. -Without Ryan Miller, Jacob Markstrom inappropriately becomes the back-up and doesn’t get to go to the minors where he can work on his game. Eddie Lack risks being hung out to dry as well. -Without Beagle and Roussel, guys like Gaudette and MacEwen are rushed into the NHL despite not being ready. -If you trade Tanev in 2016 when his value was highest, it not only impacts the development of the other young defensemen on our team (ie thrusting them into roles too advanced for their games), but this then also negatively impacts your goalie that you’re trying to develop (Markstrom). -By not making a strong push for the playoffs when the opportunity presents itself and getting the kids on the team some valuable playoff experience (like last season), you risk breaking the spirit of the young core. -How did that Vanek for Motte deal work out by the way? I’m not saying that I agree with everything Benning has done. The Ryan Spooner and Sam Gagner deals made zero sense to me at the time. I was also not in favor of bringing in Prust and was hoping that we could have adopted Carolina’s approach in accepting other teams’ bad contracts for picks (ie Bryan Bickel with a 1st as a sweetener). All I’m saying is that this management and ownership group has done MUCH better than many people give credit. When Benning took over in 2014, the core was aging and in decline AND the cupboards were bare.
  4. These things have a way of balancing out. Boeser, Pettersson, and Hughes would be selected higher in a redraft. So would Demko and Tryamkin.
  5. “Playoffs twice in seven years” Let me fill you in on a little secret kid. ALL teams in the NHL go through this. Go ahead.....look around. -Dallas, Colorado, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, Carolina, Florida, etc., etc., etc. -Go look at Tampa Bay’s history from 2004-2020. Progression is usually not a linear process. Things take time.
  6. We were starting to trend back up. We had won two of our last three games against two 2nd round playoff teams in NYI and Colorado respectively. Demko was starting to find his stride and the Canucks were clearly playing tighter in front of him after having finished a ,onstrous road trip.....and you know what, sometimes teams put themselves in a position to get lucky. We dominated in January and so who cares if Covid may have saved us? We still beat out Minnesota to qualify for the playoffs, and then took out the defending champs in the first round.
  7. For one, we made the 2nd round last year and got within a game of a 3rd round appearance. Two - Rebuilds are never an easy process. You think we are the only ones who are taking this long to rebuild? Think again. Look at teams like Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Toronto. How many playoff series’ have they won in recent years? Colorado are elite now, but their journey began in 2008. How many ups and down did Tampa Bay have since 2004? Was their progression always linear? What about teams like Carolina and Florida who are enjoying success now? People who think rebuilding is just a matter of “blowing it up” and trading every Tom, Dick, and Harry over the age of 25 for picks and prospects, really don’t understand hockey. Period. If rebuilding was that easy and that simple, then everyone would be doing it. So then why don’t more GM’s do this if it’s that obvious? Are fans on the internet and media members really smarter than NHL Managers and Owners?.......or, is it possible that a LOT more is involved in a rebuild? Do people really think that we brought in J.T Miller just so that we could “make a run” in 2019-2020? Do people really think that we couldn’t have kept all of Tanev, Markstrom, and Toffoli had we truly wanted to? Again - look at our projected cap situation in 2022-2023. Look at the players that will be on and off our books and at what cap hits. still think management doesn’t have a plan?
  8. 1) Progression usually isn’t a linear process. Look at Colorado since 2008 and Tampa since 2004. 2) Are we going to conveniently forget about our 2nd round playoff appearance last year? 650 sportsnet sure has.
  9. Yes. A smart hockey mind. October 2022. Go to capfriendly.com, and look at the Canucks’ cap situation for the 2022-2023 season. One should hope that you will be able to put two and two together over there.
  10. It only raised more question for those fans and media members who do not truly understand what management’s plan is.
  11. Do you think it’s just coincidence that all of our bad/transitional contracts will come off the books This year and next? What will our cap situation look like on October 1st 2022? Which players will be signed at what cap hits? Which bad contracts will be on the books? How many of our current young prospects and draft picks will likely be on the team at that time?
  12. Do you think it’s just coincidence that about 7 of those 8 bad/transitional contracts will come off the books this year and next? Assuming that it’s not just coincidence, what do you think would have been the strategy behind all of this? (Hint - as a result of these bad contracts, how were the kids in our system developed?)
  13. My guess with Juolevi is that coaching and management want to achieve the following: 1) Let OJ go down the taxi squad and dominate with big minutes and big ice time. 2) In the big club, dress a more conservative "defensively defensive" core with both Benn and Hamonic in the line-up.
  14. I am of the opinion that a Hughes-Tryamkin second pairing would be quite good. Tryamkin is fine as a #4 guy that can provide a stabilizing physical defensive presence. In a lot of ways, I think a pairing of Hughes and Tryamkin would be able to cover each others’ deficiencies quite effectively. If the Canucks can find a way to come up with the following pairings for next season: xxxx-Schmidt Hughes-Tryamkin Juolevi-Myers (Rathbone or Juolevi as the 7th dman) then I think we’ll be in decent shape. FWIW - my hope is that the Canucks can make a trade for Hampus Lindholm and then extend him after July 1st.
  15. Juolevi earned his spot on the team and clearly looked better than Chatfield. I thought he was looking pretty good and was disappointed to see him taken out of the line-up
  16. 2021 positives for me: 1) Demko is for real. 2) Hoglander is for real. 3) Juolevi looks like he could realistically develop into a 2nd pairing #4 dman....maybe a #3. 4) Brock Boeser looks like he did two years ago. 5) Pettersson looks like a guy that knows how to respond to adversity. 6) There might be more there with Motte. 7) Rathbone looks good on the farm. 8) Jasek looks good on the farm. 9) Despite the horrible record, the Canucks have outplayed their opponents in most of the last 11 games or so (give or take 2-3 games). 10) Gaudette is starting to acclimate to a winged position and is looking much better. I've been critical of Gaudette in the past but I'm starting to like what I'm seeing from him on the wing. He's much more suited to the wing. -I still think Tryamkin will be back with us next season -I'm confident that Pettersson and Hughes will get very favourable deals that work in our favour. I think both these guys want to win a cup and will be willing to 'buy in' with discounts so that we can have more money to bring in stronger players.
  17. He’s having an off year due to his injuries in the summer which prevented him from being able to fully train, but yes, he’s elite. When healthy, he’s only below McDavid, Drai, Matthews, and Mackinnon as far as centers go. To my earlier idea (which will never happen mind you), I’d still consider the following for next season: Pettersson + Hughes + Miller for Eichel + Dahlin + Reinhart Hoglander-Eichel-Boeser Pearson-Horvat-Podkolzin Virtanen-Reinhart-Gaudette Roussel-Beagle-Motte Dahlin-Schmidt Juolevi-Myers Rathbone-Tryamkin Demko Holtby
  18. My favorite announcer of all time is still Mike Emerick but Hughson might be my 2nd. Likely a four way tie between him, Bob Cole, Chris Cuthbert, and Jim Robson.
  19. Markstrom on IR = not surprising. His body appears to be breaking down and Benning was smart to move on from him.
  20. (2021 off season deal) Pettersson + Hughes + Miller for Eichel + Dahlin + Reinhart Next year: Hoglander-Eichel-Boeser Pearson-Horvat-Podkolzin Virtanen-Reinhart-Gaudette Roussel-Beagle-Motte Dahlin-Schmidt Juolevi-Myers Benn-Hamonic Demko Holtby
  21. It’s an interesting idea but I’d have to vote no. Eriksson will be off the books at the end of next season and could even be gone by the end of this season with the right sweetener. All of our bad contracts will be gone before October 2022. I want to see what the Canucks will do in the Summer of 2022 with all kinds of cap options. Skinner’s presence would serve as a hindrance to that.
  22. Yes. I miss Team 1040 a lot. 650 Sportsnet is full of 20-something/early 30’s kids that think they are smarter than NHL GM’s. I do not get a good vibe from the douchebags on sportsnet 650 at all.
  23. Agreed but there is something to be said about having excellent depth. Maybe Bennett and Debrusk aren’t the guys to be targeting, but just having young cost controlled assets that can form a “2A” line (2A calibre players on a 3rd line) would be huge. Like Vegas for instance. That’s more or less what I was trying to get at.
