They will likely play each other a number of times more. The exact number however, I am not sure. We play Calgary four more times I believe, and Montreal 3-4 times. If we can defeat those guys in the remainder of our games while having similar records against other teams in our remaining games, then we’re right there in the thick of things. One game at a time though. That’s the mindset we need to adopt.

I would say this your cited sources are a more accurate prognosis for this season. Nonetheless, Canucks need to keep battling. One game at a time. I would argue that over the last 9-10 games or so, the Canucks have really only been outplayed twice (both games against the Oilers). We deserved to have swept Calgary, probably should have taken all the games against Winnipeg, and probably deserved to beat Toronto in that last game that we played against them out East. Percentages are not on our side but a journey of a thousand miles always begins with a single step. If the Canucks win 6 in a row, I think we re-enter the conversation.

Yikes. I just looked up his stats and he's having a terrible year. It looked like he was turning things around earlier this year but it appears as though that was a fleeting moment. Perhaps he'd play better with better linemates (Lucic and Dube are his linemates right now), but yeah........probably a pass. Going back to my main idea however (i.e. Edler for a 1st at the trade deadline + trading two 1sts for two players), the idea of trading two 1sts (for two good young two-way grind 3rd line forwards that wouldn't look out of place on a 2nd line incase of injuries) does appeal to me. We 1) long term assets that can help the team as early as next season....... 2) Address one of our biggest weakness' on the team (i.e. lack of bottom six scoring to complement our top 6 + alleviating defensive pressure and responsibilities off of Horvat) 3) A future replacement for Brandon Sutter who will become a UFA. I dunno...... Or maybe we'd just be better off keeping the two 1sts and/or parlaying those 1sts into something different (one of which being a Hampus Lindholm type guy whom we'd then extend after July 1st).

-1st for Bennet + (plus being the operative word) -1st for Debrusk + (plus being the operative word). Agreed that a guy like Bennett hasn’t lived up to expectations but he’d be a huge upgrade over Sutter and Gaudette in a 3rd line C role. A 3rd line of Debrusk-Bennet-Heinen would likely be able to contribute regularly and consistently while also being able to play solid gritty defensive hockey. While not ideal, I’d also argue that any one of those bottom 6 guys would be able to *temporarily* fill in on the top 6 in case of injuries.

(Proposal) Canucks and Others

1) Edler with 50% retention 2) Debrusk +.....not just Debrusk by himself. -

Hope he gets help, although the bastard in me probably would have found it funny if he accidentally and randomly hit Steve Moore while driving. -

Pearson and Roussel won’t land you Drouin in my opinion. -
I like your thinking a lot. My only issue with Dougie Hamilton is that.... 1). he will likely cost some serious coin. 2) As good as he is, he’s not really a “defensive defenseman” (which is what we really need). Very interesting ideas though. I still think the presence of Sutter and Gaudette would make that 3rd line quite weak however.

-I don’t think a 2nd rounder would be enough to get Bennett. -It could be a first for Bennett+ not just a 1-1 swap. Ditto for Debrusk. -I agree that moving two firsts for anything is generally not a good idea but the players that we’d get in return would be two young assets that would significantly bolster our 3rd line for next season and beyond: Miller-Pettersson-Boeser Hoglander-Horvat-Podkolzin Debrusk-Bennett-Heinen Motte-Beagle-MacEwen Hughes-Larsson Tryamkin-Schmidt Juolevi-Myers That’s a solid playoff team for 2021-2022 is it not?

1) You're likely right about Rooster 2) Doesn't have to be one for one. Calgary and Boston add to make the deal fair. 3) Edler is in the final year of his contract and perhaps the Canucks can make it known to him that they have no intentions of bringing him back, and that perhaps he could do the team a solid and go to a contender. 4) You might be right about Larsson as I don't know him that well other than the fact that he's pretty good on the defensive side of things. Bennett - that's one of the reasons why I'd be interested in doing this deal even if Bennett clearly doesn't warrant a 1st round pick. He would address a very massive organizational need (i.e. someone that can serve as a catalyst for revitalizing our bottom 6 with smart two way hockey....while being able to utilize linemates.)

[proposal] Making the Canucks great starting next season: I am of the belief that the moves I've suggested below will address our following weaknesses and then some: 1) A legitimate top pairing "defensive defenseman" that can be the 'ying to the yang' for Hughes, while also adequate replacing Edler. 2) A new solid 3rd line can pitch in offensively, be smart defensively, and supplement our top 6 scoring. 3) More overall size and toughness on the back-end. Trade deadline: -Pearson for 2nd -Edler for 1st -Sutter for 3rd -One of Hamonic or Benn for whatever -Virtanen to Anaheim for Heinen April: Welcome Podkolzin! (burn a year of ELC so that we can control him for a longer period of time during his RFA years with a longer and more favourable bridge deal....similar to what we're doing with Boeser and will likely do with Quinn Hughes). End of season: -Replace Travis Green with Gerard Gallant Draft day: -Edler's 1st for Jake Debrusk (Boston can add) -Our 1st for Sam Bennett + (3rd rounder? / regardless, Calgary adds) -Eriksson and Rathbone for a 3rd rounder -Gaudette for a 3rd or 4th July 1st: -Sign Adam Larsson -Sign Tryamkin Expansion Draft: -Roussel exposed and claimed 2021-2022: Miller-Pettersson-Boeser Hoglander-Horvat-Podkolzin Debrusk-Bennett-Heinen Motte-Beagle-MacEwen Lind or Jasek Hughes-Larsson Tryamkin-Schmidt Juolevi-Myers Chatfield Demko Holtby (or Cheap Vet if Holtby claimed in ED)

[Proposal] Retool of the bottom 6
Patel Bure replied to CanucksCountry's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Just to add to this, I’ll assume that Virtanen gets traded for Danton Heinen. Expansion Draft: Roussel gets exposed and claimed Miller-Pettersson-Boeser Hoglander-Horvat-Podkolzin Debrusk-Bennett-Heinen Motte-Beagle-MacEwen Lind or Jasek Hughes-Larsson Tryamkin-Schmidt Juolevi-Myers Demko Holtby I’m not 100% sure if the above team would be cap compliant, but I think the team above definitely would turn some heads. -
The only reason why we initially overpaid certain players on money and term (Eriksson, Sutter, Beagle, Roussel, etc.,) is because the kids in our system weren’t ready to fulfill those roles. PTO’s aren’t going to sign with a team if the role isn’t right for them, while cheap vets aren’t going to sign at favorable term and money on downward trending teams in a high tax Canadian market. Hence, the need to overpay on established vets and/or bring in youngish reclamation projects. It’s a less than ideal situation but it’s still better than throwing your prospects/kids into the fire and watching them crash and burn (as we almost did with McCann and Virtanen). it’s no coincidence whatsoever that all/most of our bad/transitional contracts will be off the books in this coming off season and next. It was deliberately designed this way. Getting back to my main point, the main reason why we won’t overpay vets on term and money this time around is because.... 1) We now have kids in the system that are ready to take on those roles even if there are some growing pains involved. Hence, the reason why we were able to walk from Toffoli (Hoglander), Markstrom (Demko), and Tanev (soon to be Tryamkin). It will also likely be the reason why we’ll be able to walk from Pearson (Podkolzin) at the end of this season. 2) We now have a young and promising core in the right positions, and high ticket UFA’s wil see us as an up and coming team. It’s why I keep harping on the 2022 off-season. A) ALL of our “bad/transitional” contracts will be off the books with the only possible exception being Myers (which isn’t all that terrible to begin with). B-). Miller, Horvat, and Schmidt will still be on very cap friendly deals. C) Boeser will be an RFA but will have a very reasonable QO at 7.5 million. D) Guys like Pettersson, Hughes, Demko, Hoglander, Podkolzin, and Juolevi will all be closer to their peak years. To add, If the Canucks bomb this year, then there’s even a small chance that our 2021 1st rounder could be a factor in the 22-23 season. UFA’s and their agents aren’t stupid. They will analyze the above and will see Vancouver as a team with lots of promise. Hence - we might be able to attract “Marian Hossa” type UFA(s) that would be willing to take on more favorable term and money if they see Vancouver as a team being able to realistically make a deep run.

Well, I’m sorry you feel that way about my takes on here but what’s your theory as to why the Oilers haven’t been able to make the playoffs since then? My theory is that Lucic REALLY nose-dived, along with the terrible Eberle for Strome deal. Some guys that were expected to take the next step (Klefbom, JP, Talbot, etc.,) failed to do so. All I’m saying is this: I don’t see our situation being analogous to the Oilers’. I don’t see us missing the playoffs for another four years like the Oilers did because ALL/most of our “bad/transitional” contracts will be off the books before October 2022. Petey and Hughes will be extended, while Horvat, Miller, and Schmidt will still be on relatively cap friendly deals. Boeser will hit RFA status but will still be a cost controlled asset, while guys like Pettersson, Hughes, Demko, Juolevi, Hoglander, and Podkolzin will be closer to their peak years. I am of the opinion that October 2022 will be the start of our real window but I’ll admit fault if this does not turn out to be the case. And yes - I am of the opinion that this has been the plan for a long time. The JT Miller deal was made for this very purpose.

[Proposal] JB will circle back to OEL
Patel Bure replied to The King's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I’m of the opinion that Tryamkin will be returning to us in this off season and will be able to fill that role for us. He’s not the kind of guy that will look for fights like a Manson would, but I don’t think too many teams will take liberties with us with Tryamkin back there. -

If we're thinking Anaheim and we're thinking "defensive defensemen," then I'd much rather go after a guy like Hampus Lindholm. Lindholm is younger and plays a style of game that will age better than Manson's. Canucks are rumoured to be in talks with Anaheim right now (Virtanen for Heinen is what's being tossed around), but I'd rather see the Canucks try and put together a bigger package for Lindholm. Something like Virtanen + Rathbone + 1st. Trade for Lindholm, and then extend Lindholm after July 1st. Let it be known to the boys in the locker room and the fans/media in the city that this year was only a temporary set back, and that the mad dash forward begins next season. Lindholm-Schmidt Hughes-Tryamkin Juolevi-Myers Is a pretty solid defense. -

My only issue with Manson is his age and style of play. Guys like Manson are highly susceptible to falling off a cliff. -
The Hall for Larsson deal was considered one of the worst deals in recent NHL memory. Lucic fell off a cliff and I believe there was 1-2 other deals that I can’t think of. Although McDavid and Drai are great players (Drai’s contract is a bargain), were Mac and Drai on ELC’s during their 2nd round appearance?

Just a thought: With the way Montreal has been slipping lately, 4th place might not be entirely out of reach IF Toronto, Edmonton, and Winnipeg run away with the top three spots. Ottawa is very beatable while Calgary and Montreal are experiencing a lot of turmoil. Canucks might be down but it might not be impossible to climb back in. Journey of a 1000 miles begins with a single step.

Key word being ‘bad contracts’. Pettersson and Hughes receiving bridge deals would be considered good contracts. (Not entirely sure about EP actually since he might not be an RFA once a potential bridge deal of his finishes). The Oilers handicapped themselves with bad contracts after they made the 2nd round while our bad contracts will all be off the books shortly after our having made the 2nd round.

[Discussion] Realistic Value of Quinn Hughes
Patel Bure replied to Warhippy's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Trading Quinn Hughes would be beyond stupid but IF I had to do something like this, I'd see if I could go Pettersson + Hughes for Eichel + Dahlin.
