Horvat is miscast as a two way forward. He never has and never will be a Linden/Kesler type. Horvat’s more natural style of game is that of a power forward. A Jeff Carter/Jason Arnott type.

I think Gaudette will be able to produce as a center on the 4th line in protected minutes. He was doing so last season. Virtanen, with a new coach, and in a post Covid world where he can be happier and live a more social life outside the rink, has a good chance of going back to his 20 goal pace from last season in my opinion. What Virtanen really needs is a good two way 3rd line center that can help him out. #SamBennett

[Proposal] Retool of the bottom 6
Patel Bure replied to CanucksCountry's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Here's what we do, and this is something that I believe would make us a very solid team for next season: Trade deadline: -Pearson for 2nd -Edler for 1st -Sutter for 3rd -One of Hamonic or Benn for whatever End of season: -Replace Travis Green with Gerard Gallant Draft day: -Edler's 1st for Jake Debrusk -Our 1st for Sam Bennett + (3rd rounder?) -Eriksson and Rathbone for a 3rd rounder -Gaudette for a 3rd or 4th July 1st: -Sign Adam Larsson -Sign Tryamkin 2021-2022: Miller-Pettersson-Boeser Debrusk-Horvat-Podkolzin Hoglander-Bennett-Virtanen Motte-Beagle-MacEwen Roussel Hughes-Larsson Tryamkin-Schmidt Juolevi-Myers (or cheap vet if Myers claimed in ED) Demko Holtby (or Cheap Vet if Holtby claimed in ED) -
[proposal] Canucks and Bruins - end of season: Miller and Schmidt for Carlo and Debrusk Next season: Debrusk-Pettersson-Boeser Hoglander-Horvat-Podkolzin Roussel-#####-Virtanen (I still think a good third line center will be key for us. A good two way defensive center with enough offensive ability to bring out the best in his linemates. I would actually keep Virtanen here for this reason alone. New coach + post Covid world + new center = clean slate for JV). Motte-Beagle-MacEwen Gaudette (replaces Beagle as the teams’ 4th line center a year later) Hughes-Carlo Tryamkin-#### (My hope is we can sign someone like Adam Larsson) Juolevi-Myers Chatfield Demko Holtby The Canucks get a simultaneous Edler and Tanev replacement in Carlo (I.e. a top pairing all situations dman that can help Hughes on the defensive side things and log big minutes). The Bruins get a solid PMD that can play alongside McAvoy. They will also get a motivated J.T Miller since the B’s are a contender.

It’s a needless and unnecessary worry. The reason why we won’t be overpaying vets as we were in the past is because.... 1) We now have the veteran leadership within the organization (I.e. Horvat, Boeser, Miller, Schmidt, etc.) 2) With our assembled young nucleus, higher quality free agents will take a stronger look at Vancouver.
-
Canucks’ bad contracts will come off the books a lot sooner than Edmonton’s bad contracts did. We are more like the 2017 Avalanche, or the 2007-2008 Canucks. October 2022 is likely when our 2008-2013 window will begin. Take a look at capfriendly.com and see for yourself as to how things will play out. Specifically, look at the 2022-2023 season.
-
All of the bad/transitional contracts will be gone before October 2022.....which has been the entire plan for a long time.

[Proposal] Idea #1: Sell TP
Patel Bure replied to Nuxfanabroad's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I get what you’re saying but I’m just not sure if I see a fit here for Edler here next season. The Canucks have a more pressing need for a younger top pairing right sided “defensive defenseman.” Tryamkin will likely be back and Juolevi will likely need more ice time as well for his development. I see our pairings being more along the lines of the following: Hughes-Larsson Tryamkin-Schmidt Juolevi-Myers At 35-36 years of age, I just think Edler would be better off somewhere else. -
Oh ok I see what you mean. Still - it’s not that big of an issue for me as long as you have a young core of players intact. Supplementary players come and go all the time. As long as there’s cap space and a good young nucleus in tact, we should have no problem whatsoever in replacing the departed.

Hockey is a business. Sparing hurt feelings aside, keeping a healthy pipeline of picks and prospects should be the goal of every GM. -

Protected in the sense that he won’t be forced to log first pairing minutes like he would have in say 2011. However, as much as Edler has declined, he’s still the exact type of guy that you’d want on your 2nd pairing going up against secondary forwards (with good secondary forwards in front of him and a good partner beside him). Edler should easily command a 1st from a top tier team. -

In a secondary role with less pressure, Edler Is the exact guy you want eating up minutes when the top pairing isn’t on. Under the right circumstance and with protected ice time, he’s still an excellent all-situations defenseman. Teams go crazy at the deadline. Didn’t Ryan Hartman get moved for a first a few years back? -

I don’t think it’s ugly at all. It gives Edler a chance to go after a cup and it also allows Edler to give back to an organization that has given so much to him. If Edler wants to re-sign in the off season, if the fit is there, he’d be more than welcome to. Maybe that’s how the Canucks can position it to him. -

Pearson should be able to fetch a 2nd. Sutter is probably the guy that gets you the 3rd if we’re lucky. -

It’s not going “back” to anything. Unlike previous years, Edler doesn’t have term on his contract and so he might be willing to waive this season IF it’s mentioned to him that the Canucks will not be bringing him back. Move Edler and sign Adam Larsson in the off-season as the new top pairing “defensive” guy. Sign Tryamkin as well. Hughes-Larsson Tryamkin-Schmidt Juolevi-Myers -
1) Benning is the guy 2) Organization isn’t at a crossroads at all. Stay the course. Trade Edler, Pearson, Sutter, and Benn at the deadline if we are in the same spot as we are now. Don’t listen too much to these idiots on 650 sportsnet or the even bigger idiots on HF Canucks. Those guys literally can’t see two feet in front of them. 1) Benning and ownership have built this team with the expectation that our real window will start in 22-23 (look at the contracts that will be off the books). 2) Organizational progress is usually not a linear process. 3) Many of the teams in the NHL that are currently elite, struggled for YEARS on end before finally establishing themselves in that upper echelon. The media members that are complaining about what they perceive as a lack of progress on the Canucks’ part, simply do not understand what a true rebuild truly entails. October 2022 and beyond. Keep your eye on the prize.

Thanks NuxFan, I’m thinking about creating a thread later on which analyzes the current top teams in the NHL and how long it truly took for them to get into those spots. I think it will be an interesting study and exercise and hope that people will come away with something. Im listening to these idiots of 650 Sportsnet, along with reading HF Canucks, and they’re pretty much acting like our 2nd round appearance from last season didn’t happen. They seem to have this notion in their heads that progression is always linear. -
If the Canucks have a solid 22-23 season, then signing all/most of those core players will not be a problem. Pettersson, Hughes, Demko, Boeser, and Horvat. -1st line C -1st line sniper -Elite dman -Matchups center -solid goalie That’s your core, and you find ways to build around that regardless of how that manifests.

[Proposal] Idea #1: Sell TP

What the Canucks should do at the trade deadline at this current trajectory (in my opinion): 1) Do NOT lose their $&!#. So many media members and fans are screaming to "blow it up" and that's just......shortsighted (to put it politely and mildly). Rebuilds are never easy and take quite some time. Don't believe me? How many playoff series' has Calgary won since 2015? What about the Oilers since their 2017 2nd round appearance? What about the Winnipeg "You need an army!" Jets? (and the model that Linden advocated). Outside of that 3rd round appearance from a few years back, what have they done? What about Toronto's "Shanaplan?" Have they won a playoff series since "Shanaplan" took ever? When was the last time they even won a playoff series? The point I'm making is that we've assembled a solid young core here and a number of our 'transitional' contracts will be coming off the books this season and next. October 1st 2022 is when our real window will begin..........now having said that: 2) Move Edler for a 1st round pick. Make it known to Edler that the team doesn't have any plans to re-sign him in the off-season. 3) Pearson for a 2nd round pick. 4) Sutter at 50% retention for a pick (4th?). I'm not sure what would equate to fair value here. 5) Benn or Hamonic for a pick (not both, just one). End of the season = Replace Travis Green with Gerard Gallant. Draft Day: I am of the opinion that our two 1sts should be used to acquire good young 3rd line players. A 1st for Sam Bennet+, and a 1st for Jake Debrusk+. July 1st: Sign Adam Larsson. Expansion draft: Incentivize Seattle to take Tyler Myers if it helps us reduce cap space. If moving Myers is not possible at ED, then use Virtanen as a sweetener to move Eriksson to clear cap space. Miller-Pettersson-Boeser Hoglander-Horvat-Podkolzin Debrusk-Bennett-Gaudette (or Virtanen) Motte-Beagle-MacEwen Hughes-Larsson Tryamkin-Schmidt Juolevi-Myers (or CheapVet) -
The team has to keep toughing it out. Rebuilds are not easy and players have to be cognizant of this. Most of the teams that are succeeding right now spent YEARS with their current core players struggling. How many playoff rounds have the Oilers won with McDavid? What about the Leafs with Matthews, Marner, and Tavares? Where was Colorado as a franchise from 2008-2017? What did Dallas' path look like from 2008 onwards? Rebuilds take time. A 2nd round playoff appearance was a good starting point last year but progression isn't always linear. How did the Canucks do in 2007-2008 by the way? Didn't they make the 2nd round one year earlier? What happened from 2008-2013? Consider what the teams' situation on October 1st 2022: 1) ALL of our bad/transitional contracts will be off the books. This includes Sutter, Baertschi, Eriksson, Beagle, Roussel, Luongo's cap recapture, Spooner, etc. 2) Miller and Horvat will still be on relatively cap friendly deals. 3) Boeser will still be a cost controlled RFA 4) Pettersson, Hughes, Demko, Juolevi, Hoglander, and Podkolzin will be closer to their peaks. 5) IF the Canucks bomb this year and land a lottery pick, our 2021 1st might be a factor in the 2022-2023 season. The Canucks aren't as far off as people seem to think. This team is in need of two major things: 1) A top pairing 'defensive defenseman' 2) A good two way third line center that can help Horvat with defensive responsibilities AND utilize his linemates offensively [someone that can Miller-Pettersson-Boeser Hoglander-Horvat-Podkolzin (Podkolzin = Pearson replacement. Cap space permitting, maybe Pearson is re-signed as a 3rd liner). ####-####-Virtanen (A new coach replaces Green [Gallant?], and Virtanen is given a clean slate in a post-covid world where he can resume his normal life and be happy]. Motte-Gaudette-MacEwen (a decent 4th line - I think Gaudette will be a much better fit on the 4th line) Hughes-Larsson (Adam Larsson would be a good fit) Tryamkin-Schmidt (Tryamkin is the Tanev replacement) Juolevi-Myers
