  1. Colorado would say no to that and the Canucks wouldn’t have much of a reason to do this either. The Canucks’ because need on defense is a long term Edler replacement; a top pairing all situations dman. If you’re thinking Colorado, then Bowen Byram would be the guy to target. But again - I can’t see Colorado giving him up.
  2. This is really interesting. I wonder if the NHL will take this into consideration in the future and find a way to remedy this as to create even greater parity (I.e. teams in high tax cities can have higher tax adjusted salary caps).
  3. Cap his is definitely 6 million but I was under the impression that he’ll only be owed 2 million in real dollars next season. ???
  4. Fair enough and I agree with you on Drai. That actually is a really good contract. Having said that, I still think paying someone 10+ million when they haven’t won a cup is highly risky. I get that McDavid is a generational talent, but I’ve still yet to see a team win a cup with such a high allocated percentage towards their top players.
  5. We've outplayed our opponents for five games in a row now. We should have won all five games.
  6. Agreed, and in Toronto's case, it's $40,505,616 tied into four players which I think is insane (and to which I'm hoping is NOT the grim reality of a Canadian market). In terms of bargain hunting, Toronto's strategy seems to be in targeting aging cupless superstars that want one last shot at a cup and are willing to take huge discounts (i.e. Thornton, Spezza, Simmonds, etc.). Vancouver's taxes and cost of living is just as scary as Toronto's and so it will be interesting to see if they'll need to follow this model as well. We can all romanticize about the "Colorado" and "Tampa" model as much as we want, but is it realistic in a Canadian market?
  7. True but not relevant. Every team has the same ceiling and so Tampa’s tax advantages serve as a huge advantage. FWIW - I am a fan of the way Calgary (Canadian market + no tax advantages) is doing things in terms of their cap structure, but things have also not really panned out for them. Teams like Colorado, Vegas, Carolina, and NYI are doing things the correct way imo and I hope the Canucks can find a way to structure their cap in a similar manner. ps - While I’m not entirely sure if Toronto and Edmonton’s big contracts are simply a reflection of the realities of a Canadian market (ie needing to hand out huge 10 million dollar contracts due to the relative tax disadvantages), but Buffalo has no excuse. They REALLY effed up badly.
  8. Stamkos is at 8.5 million which is a very decent cap hit in terms of helping a team maintain a strong internal cap limit. Teams like Edmonton, Toronto, and Buffalo really messed up in my opinion. I’ll happily eat crow if I’m wrong, but Toronto is basically 2010-2015 Pittsburgh, in that, they will likely consistently field very solid teams but will ultimately come up short to the modern day Chicago’s, Boston’s, and LA’s who employ a “cost controlled elite talent + depth = championships” model (interesting to note that Chicago and LA both declined once Kane, Toews, Kopitar, etc., received their 10 million dollar contracts........well deserved mind you, but still).
  9. Couldn’t agree more. Also - if the last eleven years have shown us anything, it’s that depth is key. Depth + cost controlled elite talent = championships. I have yet to see a team with a 10+ million dollar cap hit player win a cup.
  10. 1) Virtanen as a sweetener to move Eriksson 2) Myers claimed in the ED 3) Sign Hamilton Miller-Pettersson-Boeser Hoglander-Horvat-Podkolzin Roussel-Gaudette-MacEwen Motte-Beagle-Bailey Hughes-Hamilton Tryamkin-Schmidt Juolevi-[CheapVet] Demko Holtby Management would likely need to add something to that forward group as the above forward group looks a little anemic. Wonder if we'd have the cap space? to be honest, I think a guy like Adam Larsson might fit our needs better when you take the cap into consideration. While Hamilton is a much better dman than Larsson, he’d likely be far more expensive as well. Larsson is probably better defensively than Hamilton in terms of being a stay-at-home guy and so he’d fit a lot better with someone like Hughes.
  11. In this offseason, I’m wondering IF Virtanen can be used as a sweetener to get rid of Eriksson (remember, Eriksson will only have one year left and will only be owed 2 million in real dollars), maybe we WOULD have the money to take a legit run at Hamilton.
  12. I love those lines obviously but I also really liked the Bubble days where we experimented with Miller and Horvat at timest to match the physicality of the Blues and Knights. Miller-Horvat-Boeser Pearson-Pettersson-Hoglander Roussel-Sutter-Gaudette Eriksson-Beagle-Virtanen Edler-Schmidt Hughes-Benn Juolevi-Myers
  13. Unfortunately with what we’d likely have to move in order to land someone like Eichel, “the flake” would likely enter the top 6 by default. FWIW, 1) I wouldn’t trade for Eichel for reasons I mentioned earlier 2) There’s absolutely nothing to this “Eichel to Vancouver” stuff. Just a bunch of random dudes speculating.
  14. From a friend. My apologies as I should have clarified this in more detail. This wasn’t a legitimate rumor from a credible source. It was a friend of mine who heard someone else speculating.
  15. Agreed. I wouldn’t trade for Eichel either although the thought of it is tempting.
  16. The rumour I've been hearing is Horvat, Podkolzin, and a 1st. That deal might not be terrible in a vacuum but people often underestimate the impact a move like that would have on team chemistry. Guys like Horvat and Miller for example, are huge presences in our lockerroom. Horvat is a captain and also takes on a lot of our toughest match-ups. One REALLY needs to think long and hard before trading a gem like Bo Horvat. I personally would NOT make the Eichel deal.....especially in light of the fact that Eichel makes 10 million per season. With Petey's contact coming up, this could easily turn into a situation where a guy like Petey says, "he got paid and so I want to get paid big as well." Ditto for Quinn Hughes. That's exactly what happened in Toronto by the way. The Leafs signed Tavares to a huge contract and so there was no way that guys like Nylander, Marner, and Matthews were going to buy in one cap friendly deals. Now having said all that, Hoglander-Eichel-Boeser Miller-Pettersson-Virtanen xxx-Schmidt Hughes-xxxx Would be very interesting. You'd have two very strong forward lines with a good PMD quarterbacking two separate lines. It's definitely a move that I'd try on NHL 21' but that's about it.
  17. Why is Boeser being listed as a center with Miller and Pettersson as his wingmen? Lol.
  18. Canucks had also won 2 of their last 3 games before the season shut down as well and so it was within reason to argue that the Canucks were coming out of their slump (in actuality, their poor play was far more related to fatigue which was caused by a brutal travel schedule). Those last 2 of 3 wins came against Colorado and NYI by the way (two very respectable teams that made 2nd round appearances during the post season).
  19. You’d fit in extremely well on HF Canucks.
  20. Sounds like you’ve got things figured out. No need to watch the rest of the games for this season in that case. :-/
  21. I don’t believe that the reaction is justifiable. All of those “formative/transitional” contracts (Sutter, Baertschi, Beagle, Roussel, etc.) were signed so that the kids in our system wouldn’t be rushed into roles that they weren’t ready for. The obvious question then becomes, “well why didn’t we just sign PTO’s and/or cheap vets to favorable term and money?” and the answer to that is obvious: A downward trending team that is headed for the cellar won’t be able to dish out favorable term and money. Furthermore, PTO’s and players looking to save their careers aren’t going to sign with a team if the role isn’t right for them (ie they put themselves in a position where they get thrown to the wolves). Vanek signed with us because the role was a good fit for both parties. The above is a simple concept that 90% of fans in this market don’t understand unfortunately.
  22. 1) Sutter will be gone at the end of this year. 2) Beagle and Roussel will be gone after this one. All of those contracts were initially signed during our formative transitional period to help protect the young players within our system.
  23. Podkolzin = Pearson replacement. Toffoli - Hoglander Markstrom - Demko Tanev - Tryamkin Pearson -Podkolzin Edler - Adam Larsson.
  24. I used to be high on Connor Carrick. A shame he didn’t pan out. Maybe the Canucks could claim him but I’m not sure if he’d really develop into much at this point.
