Exactly. While there are certain times (many times actually) where it would be advisable for a lottery team to make the pick and select the player with highest potential (as we did with Pettersson), there are other times where acquiring the “rock solid safe and secure player that would fill a huge organizational need,” would be more beneficial. I am of the belief that this would be one of those times. While I believe that Tampa will have better options available to them in terms of clearing cap space, I’m going after Cernak if Tampa is down with it.

Value of Dougie Hamilton (Discussion/Proposal)
Patel Bure replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I suggested this idea this past summer. I wouldn't give up on Schmidt however. Give him some time to acclimate to our system. If Myers can be claimed in the expansion draft, then I'd absolutely take a run at Hamilton, cap space permitting. Having said that, we might be better off with a more 'defensive defensemen'. Adam Larsson for instance would be a much cheap alternative than Hamilton. If the Canucks are destined to be a lottery team this year, then what about moving our 1st for Erik Cernak? Hamilton would be nice but I'm just not sure if we'd be able to accommodate him cap wise. He's also not the best guy in the dressing room from what I understand. -
If the Canucks are destined to be a lottery team this year, then I wonder if it would be worth our while to dangle our first to Tampa? I know people on here will HATE that idea since a lottery pick could end up being an Elias Pettersson/Quinn Hughes calibre talent, but honestly, Erik Cernak would be EXACTLY what this Canuck team would need both short term and long term. Cernak is a Tanev replacement and then some. He'd be the EXACT guy that you'd want being the "ying to the yang" of Quinn Hughes. Getting a good young solid 'stay at home' RD is not easy. I'd say in this instance, passing up potential (i.e. the next superstar) for a guy like Cernak might well be worth it.

The Canucks putting "all the eggs" in one basket.
Patel Bure replied to Patel Bure's topic in Canucks Talk
My “all the eggs in one basket” idea updated. I especially like the idea of placing Miller with Gaudette. Miller and help Gaudette with face offs and defensive play (well.....last year’s version of JT anyways). -
The Canucks 1/3 of the way through the season (discussion)
Patel Bure replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Canucks Talk
The Canucks need a larger representative sample size against Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Calgary in order to see where we are really at as a team. -
Streaks and slumps are a natural part of a players’ development. For instance, Boeser struggled last year and looks really good this year. My recommendation to Green would be to try and play Petey on left wing on a line with Horvat and Boeser. Put all the proverbial “eggs in one basket” and see how the team fares. Pettersson-Horvat-Boeser / Hughes-Schmidt Miller-Gaudette-Hoglander - Edler-Myers

The way I see it, management and ownership have built this team for the 2022-2023 season. Obviously, management and ownership want us to be competitive right now but 2022-2023 is the REAL prize that they have circled in my opinion. -Petey, Hughes, Demko, Juolevi, Hoglander, Podkolzin, etc., will all be closer to their peak years. -Horvat, Miller, Boeser, and Schmidt will still be on cap friendly deals or will still be cost controlled assets (in Boeser’s case). -All of our “transitional” contracts that were signed during our rebuild will be off the books, along with our cap penalties (ie Sutter, Eriksson, Beagle, Roussel, Baertschi, Spooner, Luongo, etc.). Ferland will be LTIR or retired, while Myers will be our only ‘bloated’ contract left (although in Myers’ case, it’s not really a horrible contract since his presence fulfills our biggest organizational weakness). It’s NOT the end of the world if the Canucks bomb this year because if they bomb and land a lottery pick, then there’s a small chance that this 2021 1st lottery pick will be a huge factor in the 2022-2023 season. Try to focus on October 1st, 2022. Most fans may not realize this, but we might actually be close to where Colorado was in 2017.

The Canucks have played well their last three games actually and deserved to win all three. The Nucks have had their fair share of problems this season, but a lot of it can be attributed to.... 1) A brutal schedule to start the season which prevented the team from being able to practice much. 2) Playing a disproportionately high number of games against the Canadiens and Leafs relative other teams in the division. Both the Leafs and Habs are top 8 calibre teams in the NHL. While the Leafs and Habs definitely appear to have the Canucks' number, the Canucks have smacked around Ottawa (3-0), and are currently 1 game below .500 against teams that could be considered around the same calibre as the Canucks (Oilers + Jets + Flames = 3-4 overall record). A better gauge on where this team really stands, would be to see a larger representative sample against the Oilers, Jets, and Flames, while also seeing how the Canucks perform as their early hectic schedule normalizes somewhat. Unfortunately, I wouldn't expect bandwagon fans like you to understand this simplistic concept and so I'll be happy to show you the door on your way out.

Although it’s highly unlikely, I’m wondering if Canucks could make a trade for a guy like Hampus Lindholm in the off-season and then simultaneously sign him long term (similar to what we did with Sutter). The Canucks do it because they get a solid top pairing “defensive defenseman” that is still young while Anaheim does it because receive assets for Lindholm instead of losing him for free in the 2022 offseason. Lindholm-Schmidt Hughes-Tryamkin Juolevi-Myers

1) Doubtful we’ll lose Myers to expansion and Schmidt will be protected. 2) Tryamkin will be back despite what many people think. 3) Even despite the extensions given to Hughes and Pettersson, the Canucks will likely be able to go hard after a top pairing dman. If not, then Edler is a good contingency plan (hence my comment of “see a fit). Hughes-#### Tryamkin-Schmidt Juolevi-Myers OR #####-Schmidt Hughes-Tryamkin Juolevi-Myers Edler or a new dman will fill be the #####

Tryamkin really does want to come back here and he almost signed with us this past summer. Cap space and Covid were the only real hold ups. While Tryamkin isn’t a top pairing dman by any stretch of the means, he’s still a good stable #4 dman that will take on a lot of the defensive responsibilities that Tanev previously fulfilled. Hughes-##### Tryamkin-Schmidt Juolevi-Myers is how I see our defense shaping up next year. My hope is that the Canucks will have enough cap space to go hard after Adam Larsson so that he can fill the role of the departed Edler. Hughes-Larsson Tryamkin-Schmidt Juolevi-Myers

A better question is who will be on the team in October of 2022: Miller-Pettersson-Horvat Hoglander-Horvat-Podkolzin ####-####-#### Motte-Gaudette-MacEwen Hughes-##### Tryamkin-Schmidt Juolevi-Myers Demko ###### Is how I see this. Based on the above, IF the Canucks can land a top pairing RD to play with Hughes and a new 3rd line, then I think this Canucks team could be a serious cup contender.

[Discussion] Tanner Pearson Can We Really Keep him?
Patel Bure replied to Rush17's topic in Canucks Talk
I don’t think we can. My guess is that Hoglander and Podkolzin were meant to be the Pearson and Toffoli replacements. Pearson could possibly be moved at the deadline if the Nucks aren’t competitive at the deadline. -
HF Canucks was literally a ghost town tonight. Especially in their GDT thread. What a surprise! (Shocking!)

Canucks fans pen open letters to team owner Francesco Aquilini
Patel Bure replied to nux4lyfe's topic in Canucks Talk
October 2022: 1) All of our “bad/transitional” contracts will be off the books....contracts of which were deliberately brought in at the time to insulate the youth and protect their development. 2) Horvat, Schmidt, Miller, and Boeser will still be on relatively low cap hit deals. 3) Demko, Pettersson, Hughes, Hoglander, Podkolzin, and many more of our younger players will be closer to their peak years. Guys like Pettersson and Hughes will likely be put on “bridged” or 5 year cap deals (a la Chicago/LA model) so that it keeps their cap hits low in the short term so that it increases our chances of going after a cup. If the Canucks finish poorly this season, there’s also a slight chance that our 2021 1st rounder could factor into the 2022-2023 season. If these so-called “knowledgeable” fans truly understood our cap structure and what contracts will be coming off the books this season and next, along with what type of players would want to sign here given our young core and nucleus, they would not be in such a panicked state. STOP. Re-Read the above in bold again. Its entirely possible that the Canucks’ GM, management, and ownership is much smarter than a bunch of schmucks from HF, The Athletic, Canucks Army, etc., etc. -
Canucks fans pen open letters to team owner Francesco Aquilini
Patel Bure replied to nux4lyfe's topic in Canucks Talk
This is one of the stupidest articles that I’ve scrolled and skimmed in my entire life. It’s so short sighted and ridiculous. Will be interesting to see what this fan thinks of the state of the team on October 1st 2022. So many Canuck fans cannot see two feet beyond their nose. -
[PROPOSAL] Adam Larsson
Patel Bure replied to Elias Pettersson's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I can't see him doing that to be honest. If you were Edler, would you accept 700K to stay in Vancouver (high taxes + high cost of living) or go to some American team where you'd get paid millions with far less taxes and a lower cost of living? -
[Rumour] Predators interested in Adam Gaudette

Gaudette + Virtanen + 2nd for Cousins and Sissons -
[proposal] Canucks and Predators: Gaudette + Virtanen for Cousins and Sissons My guess is that the Canucks would have to add here in order to make it work, but I’d be willing to do it depending on what the ‘add’ entailed obviously. Canucks get their long term 3rd C along in Sissons (BC boy) + a gritty hard working bottom 6 winger in Cousins. Canucks sign Adam Larsson and Tryamkin in the off season as well. Next year Miller-Pettersson-Boeser Hoglander-Horvat-Podkolzin Cousins-Sissons-Motte Roussel-Beagle-MacEwen Hughes-Larsson Tryamkin-Schmidt Juolevi-Myers Demko [Dipietro or CheapVet]

[PROPOSAL] Adam Larsson
Patel Bure replied to Elias Pettersson's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Completely forgot about Larsson. He’d be terrific alongside someone like Quinn Hughes. Hughes-Larsson Tryamkin-Schmidt Juolevi-Myers -
I get a lot of stuff wrong when it comes to hockey but I nailed my Eriksson prediction. Giving that type of term and money was a slap in the face to other players on the team that had willingly taken relatively low cap hit deals in order to be consistently competitive. FWIW - I had also predicted that the Leafs would also regress as a team upon signing Tavares. My assertion was that Matthews and Marner would also want huge up front non-bridge deals which would prevent the Leafs from being able to sign their important depth players (JVR, Bozak, etc.).
