In a weird sort of way, JD Burke is the “embodiment” of the HF “Canucks fans.” He would rather see the Canucks lose and be proven right rather than seeing the Canucks succeed and being proven wrong.

[Report] Mikko Koivu announces retirement
Patel Bure replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
Makes sense. Remember - it’s 2012 in their worlds. Have to bring your A game against the President Trophy calibre Canucks. :-p -
JD is an intelligent guy but he’s not really a Canucks fan. He enjoys it when the Canucks lose because it allows him the opportunity to say controversial things that ultimately appeal to his fanbase. Guys like Neil McRae, Tony Gallagher, JP McConnell, Dan Russell etc., all criticized (or criticize) the Canucks when appropriate but it came from a good place. JD Burke is literally a snake in the grass.

[Report] Mikko Koivu announces retirement

I haven’t been following them much but has he bounced back at all? He was projecting to be a top 6 player but really nosedived in Columbus. Edler and Hansen also had terrible years under Torts. I’m wondering if a lot of European players (and many Other non-European players obviously) simply do not respond well to “tough” coaches? -

I also wouldn’t be surprised if Alex Wenneberg got ruined by Torts. -
I still think Benning will be GM but I hope you’re right about Pearson (if we’re way out of contention at the deadline). My hope is that the Canucks and Edler have also had a conversation with regards to next season (I.e. Nucks not intending to bring him back), which would allow the Canucks to land a 1st round pick for Edler (who decides to waive his NTC). If the Canucks are destined to bomb this year, then I see us being in a similar position to where Colorado was during the 2017 draft. A good young core with incoming prospects, with no bad contracts on the books in the not-so-distant future (in our case, after July 1st 2022). I still like the line-up below if it’s feasible for October 2022. Miller-Pettersson-Boeser Hoglander-Horvat-Podkolzin Debrusk-Bennett-[2021 1st] Motte-Gaudette-MacEwen Lindholm-Schmidt Hughes-Tryamkin Juolevi-Myers Demko [Dipietro or CheapVet] Gallant = head coach I haven’t checked capgeek to see if that line-up would be cap compliant (if not, then find ways of incentivizing Seattle to take Myers from us), but I think the above roster would very much be in the conversation for the cup. 1) Virtanen for Debrusk (I still don’t know why Boston would agree to this but their fans have a weird boner for Virtanen) 2) Pearson for Bennett (Flames get the better player / we get the younger long term asset that can play center). 3) Incentivize Seattle to take Myers 4) Either wait until July 1st 2022 to sign Hampus Lindholm or do a “trade and sign” with Anaheim like we did with Brandon Sutter when he was in Pittsburgh. 5) A possible “Marc Staal” type deal where we give a team a 2nd rounder to take Eriksson off our hands IF the Canucks want to be as competitive as early as 2021-2022.

He should have signed with the Leafs seeing as how they're trying to win the 2012 cup with Spezza, Simmonds, and Joe Thornton. -
This x 100,000,000,000% I hope this sends JD Burke out of Vancouver Canucks hockey for good.

Gaudette clearly looks overwhelmed in a top 9 role but maybe he could center an “energy” line one day in a 4th line role while we get an upgrade on our 3rd line. Gaudette has a lot of limitations but he has decent offensive abilities when given better soft minutes (as he proved last year). Motte-Gaudette-MacEwen could be a pretty decent 4th line one day imo. Debrusk-Bennett-Bailey could be a decent 3rd line (I’m really bullish on Bailey and think he will develop into a really solid player).

I'm not entirely sure why Bruins fans seem so eager to give us Debrusk for Virtanen (cap crunched?), but I'd definitely be down if they were. As far as Bennett goes, I just love the fact that he's solid defensively (unlike Gaudette) and actually knows how to utilize his wingers (unlike Sutter and Beagle). Pearson might be better but Bennett is younger and could presumably be a part of our core for a much longer time period. Having Debrusk and Bennett anchoring our 3rd line for a good number of years would be absolutely solid.

LaLa land: I’m going into “Lala land” here, but I’m wondering if the team below would be a legit cup contender while also being cap compliant? 2022-2023: Miller-Pettersson-Boeser Hoglander-Horvat-Podkolzin Debrusk-Bennett-Bailey Motte-Gaudette-MacEwen Lindholm-Schmidt Hughes-Myers Juolevi-Tryamkin Demko [Dipietro or CheapVet] -Petey and Hughes signed to bridge and/or 5 year deals. -Holtby claimed in the ED -Canucks sign Hampus Lindholm on July 1st 2022 or do a sign and trade deal for him with Anaheim before that time. -Canucks walk from Eriksson, Edler, Sutter, Baertschi, and Benn. Spooner and Luongo = off the books. -Virtanen for Debrusk -Pearson for Bennett -Canucks walk from Beagle and Roussel on July 1st 2022.

[proposal] Tanner Pearson for Sam Bennett + Jake Virtanen for Jake Debrusk I thought of a proposal that would accommodate Debrusk here: 2 Trades: 1) Virtanen for Debrusk 2) Pearson for Bennett Calgary goes for Pearson because he’s the better player and Calgary is in “go for the cup now” mode while we go for Bennett since he is a younger long term asset that can play 3rd line center for us one day. NOW with Bennett here, the Canucks could reap the benefits of having someone like Debrusk here long term, as opposed to being pissed away on a 3rd line with sub par centers (Sutter, Beagle, or Gaudette). And again - if not Debrusk, then it would have been another winger being pissed away on that 3rd line. Long term lines (next season) Miller-Pettersson-Boeser Hoglander-Horvat-Podkolzin Debrusk-Bennett-MacEwen Roussel-Beagle-Motte Interim short term lines: Miller-Pettersson-Boeser Debrusk-Horvat-Hoglander Bennett-Sutter-MacEwen Roussel-Beagle-Motte 2022-2023 Miller-Pettersson-Boeser Hoglander-Horvat-Podkolzin Debrusk-Bennett-#### Motte-Gaudette-MacEwen End result - the Canucks finally have three good lines and a 3rd line that would be solid defensively while still being pretty decent offensively. A 3rd line with Bennett and Debrusk would also be quite gritty and tenacious.

How many wins would satisfy the fans this season?
Patel Bure replied to ImConfused's topic in Canucks Talk
The Leafs will very likely win a couple rounds this year (and in the upcoming years), but they'll be hard pressed to win a cup in my opinion due to the way they've structured their cap (i.e. over-allocation of cap towards top players leaving very little left for depth). Teams like Tampa, Vegas, Colorado, and Carolina will be in a better position to win cups once teams like Boston and Washington start to fade because they are following the cup winning formula that teams over the past 11 years have followed: Cost controlled elite talent + depth = championships. To me, Toronto is the equivalent of Pittsburgh 2010-2015. Edmonton and Buffalo have also followed this ill-fated model IMO. The highly successful Chicago/LA model offered its top players 5 year deals which kept the cap hits low. It was during this window where Chicago and LA were able to win their multiple cups. Even Pittsburgh won back to back cups once the C.H. percentage to their top players decreased as the salary cap rose. Getting back to my point however, I find it funny that HF Canucks continuously praise "Shanaplan," and those guys haven't won a playoff round yet! Their last playoff series victory to date was back in 2004. Even the Winnipeg Jets whom Trevor Linden wanted to emulate (which lead to the rift between him and the current management group).......how much actual playoff success have they had outside of 2017-2018? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Winnipeg_Jets_seasons). Again, my ultimate point is this: Rebuilds are not easy and progression is very rarely a linear process. The Canucks look like they'll be in a very good spot starting on July 1st 2022, and so my hope is that players, fans, and media members can bare down and be patient. Our next two seasons (this one and next) might look like 2007-2008 but we all know what happened after that.
