Edmonton (football team) polling fans on new team names LOL

Agree with you on Edmonton Energy. On an unrelated note, when can we expect Chicago’s NHL team to change their name to the Chicago Black Sox? -
(Rumour) Virtanen on the trade block

Really sad with regards to what has happened with Jake. A year ago to this day, the guy was taking shifts on the first line with Petey and Miller was on pace for 20 goals. I really don’t know what happened. -

The Edmonton EverGreens -
All of our bad contracts being off the books before July 1st 2022 will be the real sign. Don’t be surprised if Myers is exposed and claimed in the Expansion draft as well (possibly incentivizing Seattle to select him).

Canucks - worst defensive team in the NHL?
Patel Bure replied to Quinn Skates's topic in Canucks Talk
Pearson-Horvat-Eriksson was our best match ups line last season. No coincidence at all that Greener had them on the ice when we were trying to protect leads. Eriksson is overpaid and an offensive black hole, but he knows how to play smart, high percentage, defensive hockey. -
How many wins would satisfy the fans this season?
Patel Bure replied to ImConfused's topic in Canucks Talk
I’m on board with JB staying but I’d like to see Gerard Gallant replace Green. Gallant’s body of work in Vegas and Florida speaks volumes, and Gallant also knows how to utilize Schmidt in the correct manner. -

Agreed that the Canucks need to make changes and figure out their systems (my hope is that Gallant replaces Green at some point, amongst other changes that take place), but I once again point to teams like Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Colorado, Dallas, and Toronto in the sense that these guys didn't just get progressively better each and every year. Didn't the Leafs miss the playoffs last year? Colorado seemed to be getting some steam during 14-16 if I recall correctly but then finished almost dead last in 17' (got Makar). Dallas swan dived that year as well (landed Heiskanen). When Calgary defeated us in 2015, the "mantra" was that these guys would be joining the elites in 1-2 season and yet there they were drafting Matthew Tkachuk in 2016. Speaking of the Flames, have they won a playoff series since 2015? What about Edmonton since they knocked off San Jose in the playoffs that one year? The Canucks will definitely need to make some changes if the $&!# show of this year continues, but I hope people realize that brighter things are still likely in store even if this year appears to be a step back. -
Will Canucks coaching staff survive the season?

Thanks man. You know what’s the most ironic thing right now? All throughout Benning’s tenure, his critics critiqued him for.... 1) Being only focused on the short term without considering the big picture. 2) Committing to expensive vets while “burying” the kids (in actuality, the vets were brought in because the kids in the system weren’t ready for those roles, and most of these kids ended up developing better by not being rushed). Now - at present day - Benning has clearly emphasized the long term over the short term by committing to guys like Demko, Hoglander, and Podkolzin over Markstrom, Toffoli, and Tanev, and is CLEARLY prioritizing kids over expensive vets now that the actual kids in the system are ready for said roles, and he’s being Flamed. What many people don’t realize is that Benning could have committed to guys like Toffoli, Tanev, and Markstrom had he TRULY wanted to, but that would have involved blowing up the prospect pool by using sweeteners to get rid of the “transitional” contracts. The hell with that. Benning wants this team to have a solid healthy prospect pool and he’s done exactly that. -
Canucks - worst defensive team in the NHL?

The players are fine. Coaching and Systems are at fault. Put Edler with Schmidt, keep the Horvat, Pearson, Eriksson line together to shut down. Miller-Pettersson-Boeser Pearson-Horvat-Eriksson Roussel-Sutter-Hoglander Motte-Beagle-Virtanen (or MacEwen) Edler-Schmidt Hughes-Benn Juolevi-Myers Use Sutter as part of a load management strategy so that he stays healthy. Alternate him with Gaudette. That’s very similar to the line-up that started the year 9-3-3 last season. The other idea is to stack one line so that it gets the team going. Pettersson-Horvat-Boeser Pearson-Sutter-Miller Hoglander-Gaudette-Virtanen Roussel-Beagle-MacEwen Hughes-Schmidt Edler-Myers Juolevi-Benn Funny how “Canucks fans” at HF along with the toxic media members in this city point to the “fact” that we were only good because of Markstrom last year and yet have zero issue in praising guys like Pettersson, Hughes, and Miller when they see fit. No one seemed to complain back in 2006-2007 that Luongo carried the team into the 2nd round that year. Why? Because - it was widely understood that our window was still a little down the road. I would like to believe that our media and fan base hasn’t become progressively stupider over time, but I’m finding it difficult to defend them here. -

The two biggest issues people seem to have with Benning, as far as trades are concerned, are the Sutter and Gudbranson deals. In the case of Gudbranson, he was meant to be the Tanev replacement so that the Canucks would be able to trade Tanev at a premium. Unfortunately, Gudbranson didn’t pan out. The game started to change to a faster pace and Gudbranson didn’t adapt his game unfortunately. Young physical stay at home RD’s are rarely ever made available, and so that’s why Benning took a calculated risk. Gudbranson also had a pretty good year with Mitchell in that past season and so Benning figured he’d fit in our system quite well. As far as Sutter goes, the guy had been durable as a horse for all of his career prior to coming to Vancouver. He had been a selke trophy candidate, and had shown plenty of signs that he could be a decent “2A” calibre center unlike Bonino who has proven that he wasn’t quite second line material (Bonino is/was an excellent 3rd line center but can’t play top 6). The idea was that Sutter and Horvat could each play the “2A” role with Horvat taking on more offensive deployment (more suitable to his game), while Sutter would take on more defensive match-ups. Unfortunately, Sutter became completely brittle upon arriving here and was never able to live up to his billing. Horvat ended up having to take on a lot of the tough defensive match-ups even though that’s not a natural part of his game (Horvat, stylistically, is more of a power forward/Jason Arnott type than he is a Linden/Kesler type two way guy). long story short - Benning’s reasoning behind these moves was actually pretty good but these moves simply didn’t pan out. That’s not to say that I blindly agree with everything Benning does. I was not a fan of the Spooner and Gagner signings/trades whatsoever. -
“all along” definitely isn’t an accurate term and so that’s a mistake on my part, but I think they’ve had an approximate idea for quite sometime as to when our real window would begin: All of our bad/transitional contracts expire around the same time: -Sutter = 2021 -Baertschi = 2021 -Benn = 2021 -Eriksson = 2022 -Beagle = 2022 -Roussel = 2022 -Boeser = year burned off ELC = cost controlled asset for longer period of time -Hughes = see above -Spooner = off the books in 2022 -Luongo recapture = off the books in 2022 -That is a LOT of bad contracts expiring at around the same time. Even in the case of Tyler Myers who is signed well beyond that, Myers can be exposed at the Expansion Draft, and I think management had this built into his contract for a reason. -Management also knew about Ferland’s situation: if Ferland was “the Ferland of old,” then his 3.5 million dollar cap hit would have been good value. If not, then he’d like retire or be LTIR’d (as we are seeing). Then, you look at some of the guys that the Canucks have been acquiring and what their cap hits look like (JT Miller and Nate Schmidt). All very good cap hits signed long term. To me anyways, this screams of management circling 2022-2023 as the season they have circled. That’s not to say however that they haven’t made mistakes. -They clearly saw Juolevi as a future Edler replacement but passed on the obvious choice of drafting Tkachuk. -They underestimated as to how quickly Pettersson and Hughes would develop into superstars and so they gave more money and term to Beagle and Roussel than they should have. (Not sure if this is what happened but that’s how I see it - that, and them feeling that guys like Gaudette, MacEwen, and Motte weren’t quite ready).

How many wins would satisfy the fans this season?
Patel Bure replied to ImConfused's topic in Canucks Talk
It shouldn’t be seen as a “major step back” at all. Progression isn’t usually linear. Remember where Colorado and Dallas finished in 2017? How did Dallas do a year prior to that? 2022-2023 = Canucks’ year. Fans, media, and our current core of players need to be patient. -

Let the chips fall where they may. Even if the Canucks screw the pooch this season, we already have our young core assembled established for the next generation. Furthermore, ALL of our bad contracts will be off the books prior to July 1st 2022. If the Canucks do poorly this season, we will get high placement in the draft and that 1st round pick might be able to help us as early as the 2022-2023 season. Moving Edler at the trade deadline would help us big time as well (ie Edler waived his NTC after management tells him that they don’t intend to re-sign him). -
In Gillis’ defense, it was ownership that wanted him to “evolve” the identity of the team and not commit to a full rebuild in 2012 after we lost to the Kings. Gillis wanted to commit to a full on rebuild and sell off our top players while their values were still at a premium ownership refused. Yes - Gillis and his regime did a horrible job of drafting and developing young talent in our system but Gillis was correct that the correct time to do a scorched earth rebuild was in 2012 when our top players were still close to their primes and weren’t handicapped by NTC’s/NMC’s.
-
Focus on October 1st 2022, It’s the date that management had circled all along for this team. The storm between now and then will be a little rough, as it was for the Colorado Avalanche in 2017, but we are much closer than you think.

Think big picture. Instead of getting rid of a unique asset like Hughes, why not bring in a newer and younger version of Tanev? Perhaps there’s a Russian giant within our system that’s waiting to come back here to fulfill that role? Perhaps this was Benning’s plan all along as lots of cap will be off the books at the end of this season? (Edler, Sutter, Pearson, etc.). You want to know what’s so ironic? Many years ago, Benning was vehemently criticized because people saw him as being “short term focused” without considering the bigger picture. He was criticized for overpaying veterans without people considering the fact that the kids within the system weren’t ready to take on those roles. Now at present day, it’s clear (and was clear all along), that Benning and this management group clearly had the long term in mind and clearly desired to have young kids within the system take on roles once they were ready. -Demko instead of Markstrom -Tryamkin over Tanev -Hoglander over Toffoli -Podkolzin over Pearson (likely scenario) And now people, all of a sudden, are upset. Think big picture. Our long term Tanev replacement will be here soon enough.

[Proposal] Jake Virtanen For Sam Bennett

I think Pearson will be gone at the end of the season anyways. Move Pearson with Gaudette if that entices the Flames to give us Bennett and then promote Baertschi. Miller-Pettersson-Boeser Baertschi-Horvat-Hoglander MacEwen-Bennett-Virtanen Roussel-Beagle-Motte -
I agree with a lot of what you're saying but I don't quite agree with you Schmidt. Schmidt has looked "good," but just hasn't looked 'great' like his usual self. His underlying metrics are actually "good," so far in a Canucks uniform but he just hasn't been elite. I'm still not entirely sure why Green is playing Schmidt on his LEFT side with Tyler Myers. Schmidt is better on the right side and performs much better with a strong two-way type player. Put Schmidt with Edler or put Schmidt with Juolevi.

You might be right as far as Jake/Bennett goes. Hopefully, that isn’t the case and Calgary is still open to that (maybe they’re just discussing some minor details and links). -

I disagree. Trades such as Leivo, Pearson, Toffoli, Miller, and Motte were huge wins for us. As far as contracts go, we will be able to offer more favourable term and money once this team pushes closer to its window (i.e. The Holtby signing). -

It’s the unfortunate nature of UFA when a team is bottom feeding and/or trending downwards. The player has more power and leverage and the team will have to hand out more unfavorable term and money. If a team is unwilling to do this, then it has to push kids into roles that they may not be ready for (and hence, ruining their development). The mistake that most media members and HF “Canucks fans” make, is that they believe that signing cheap vets and PTO’s to ideal term and money is akin to shooting fish in a barrell. It’s not. As teams improve and assemble a young and promising nucleus of talent, the “power shift” slowly takes place to which UFA’s would be more inclined to sign at discounts and more favorable terms (team perspective) in order to win a cup (think: Marian Hossa with Chicago). As it relates to the Canucks, it’s no coincidence whatsoever that all of our bad contracts will come off the books both this summer and next. It was specifically designed this way because this is when management really saw our window starting. The only “bad” contract that will still be on the books is Tyler Myers due to the fact that our organizational depth on RD was embarrassingly atrocious. -

I’m wondering if the Flames would be interested in Gaudette + Tanner Pearson? The Flames are clearly trying to “go for it” right now and Pearson is definitely a win now piece. The Canucks likely won’t sign Pearson in the off-season anyways and so why not use him as trade bait in this deal? The Canucks then call up Sven Baertschi and let him get some NHL playing time before he moves on at the end of the year. Next season: Miller-Pettersson-Boeser Hoglander-Horvat-Podkolzin MacEwen-Bennett-Virtanen Roussel-Beagle-Motte -

Agreed with you about the coaches but strongly disagree with regards to the rebuild. Those “questionable” contracts were signed as a way of insulating the kids in the system who weren’t ready for those roles. The presence of those vets helped the kids play in roles that were more suitable to their games. For example - signing Ryan Miller allowing for Markstrom to develop longer in the minors, or signing guys like Schaller, Roussel, and Beagle so that guys like MacEwen and Gaudette could develop a little more. People also underestimate as to just how shockingly bad our organizational right side depth on RD really was. Hence, the decision not to trade Tanev in 2016, the calculated gamble on the Gudbranson trade, and signing Tyler Myers. -

Virtanen for Sam Bennett is still our best play in my opinion. Bennett is good defensively (unlike Gaudette) and has a decent enough offensive game where he's not a black hole there (unlike Sutter who often has difficulty utilizing his teammates). I realize that there are better 3rd line centres out there such as Radek Faska and Colton Sissons, but good 3rd line centres are rarely made available. Canucks need a solid defensive center that can help out Horvat in this regard, and they also need a center that wouldn't look completely out of place on the top 6 in case of injuries. This is why I think Sam Bennett is our guy.
