Who are the “magnificent 7” that Benning was referring to?
Patel Bure replied to Patel Bure's topic in Canucks Talk
My explanation on Brock: If the Canucks let Toffoli walk, then they will have essentially traded a high pick and a good prospect for 20 games. It’s possible that this will happen, but I can’t see Benning wanting this. Benning has also stated a desire to recoup the 1st that he lost in the Miller trade, and it’s unlikely that the Canucks would sign Toffoli, only to flip him. So, given that....... 1) Benning has expressed a desire to recoup the 1st and a high level prospect that was lost in the Miller and Toffoli deals. 2) The Canucks will need a LOT of cap space to sign Pettersson and Hughes when the time comes. 3) Moving guys like Eriksson, Sutter, Baertschi, etc., will not be an easy task... All signs point to the Canucks trading Brock for a 1st and a good prospect IF they are able to sign Toffoli. But why would we keep an older asset in Toffoli instead of the younger asset in Brock? The above question is very reasonable and so here is my thought: Even though Toffoli is older, this could actually work to the Canucks’ advantage in terms of paying Toffoli a longish contract at a reasonable AAV. Toffoli is a great player but he isn’t a superstar, and so he won’t command between 8-10 million dollars. Far from it. The Canucks should be able to sign Toffoli to a very reasonable 5 year deal between 6-7 million. With Brock on the other hand, one of two things will happen over these next two seasons: 1) Brock will go back to being the Brock of two seasons ago, and will score 30+ goals. Since his current contract is supposed to be a cap friendly “bridge” contract, Brock’s asking price could easily be between 8 and 10 million if he turns back into the Brock from two seasons ago. Brock’s young age will also drive up his value (which in this case, would work against us). 2) We are able to sign Brock at or close to his current AAV in two seasons.......and this will be because Brock was unable to return to the Brock from two seasons ago. If this happens, it will be because Brock will have continued to be a slow skating one dimensional defensive liability of a player that is overly reliant on his shot, Pettersson, and Horvat. For these reasons, I would make signing Toffoli a bigger priority than Brock. With Brock gone, I would also take a calculated risk with Virtanen and give him an 8 year deal. An 8 year deal for Virtanen would mean that his AAV in the short term would be slightly above market value (or his current ability), but the hope and expectation would be that Virtanen would improve his play and then greatly exceed the value of his contract after 1-2 seasons (which would make the rest of the 6-7 years a bargain contract). -

Kole Lind as a sweetener? Here’s my thing with Kole Lind: Assuming that our RW organizational depth looks like this in the future: 1st line: Brock or Toffoli 2nd line: Brock, Toffoli, Virtanen, or Podkolzin 3rd line: Virtanen or Podkolzin 4th line: MacEwan I’m just not sure where Lind would fit. The only way I could see Lind fitting long term, was if the Canucks committed to both Toffoli and Brock, and were somehow able to move Virtanen for a 1st. Even then, where would Podkolzin factor in? Would Pod be moved to LW? I’m just not sure. I could see Lind being used a sweetener to move Ferland, assuming that Ferland doesn’t retire. I think the Canucks’ original plan was to keep Ferland and move on from Pearson upon contract expiration, but Pearson has revived his career in Vancouver. If the Canucks sign Toffoli, then I think they’ll be inclined to keep Pearson as well. -

Will add one more tidbit: again, just my half-assed two cents: If the Canucks decide to keep Stecher, I could see the Canucks using Rafferty as a sweetener to get rid of one of their bad contracts. -

Who are the “magnificent 7” that Benning was referring to? About a week or so ago, Benning mentioned that there were 7 guys currently within the Canucks’ system that he expected to be playing on the Canucks within 2-3 years. Who was he referring to? Here’s my guess: 1) Rafferty 2) Tryamkin (if he counts) 3) MacEwan 4) Podkolzin 5) Hoglander 6) Juolevi (or Rathbone) 7) Dipietro 2020-2021 again, these are just my predictions) Miller-Pettersson-Toffoli Pearson-Horvat-Virtanen Roussel-Gaudette-Ferland Motte-Beagle-MacEwan Edler-Barrie Hughes-Myers Tryamkin-Rafferty Markstrom NewBackUp 2021-2022 Miller-Pettersson-Toffoli Pearson-Horvat-Virtanen Hoglander-Gaudette-Podkolzin Motte-####-MacEwan Hughes-Myers Tryamkin-Barrie Juolevi-Rafferty (Juolevi or Rathbone) Markstrom Dipietro That’s “kinda sorta” how I see things playing out, with regards to the “magnificent 7,” and with regards to how the Canucks will handle their cap space. I think the Canucks walk away from Tanev and Stecher, while trading Demko with Eriksson to clear cap. Boeser will get moved at the draft to Minnesota for a 1st rounder and a prospect to clear cap (and to recoup the first that we lost in the Miller deal, along with recouping a Madden replacement within the system). Canucks walk from Edler and Benn on July 1st 2021. Ferland will either retire or will be traded if he gets his game and health back. Sutter and Baertschi traded at 50% in this summer, while Beagle and Roussel traded at 50% in the summer of 2021. -
You can’t tell if he’s being serious or is just joking? Read his post a few more times and the answer should become quite obvious.

Good post. Are the Canucks still allowed to bring in Tryamkin even though the trade deadline has passed? Perhaps I’m wrong, but I think Tryamkin could be our 4th best defenseman after Hughes, Edler, and Tanev.

For whatever it’s worth, I had never suggested trading Demko this season. I had suggested (and still suggest) trading Eriksson to Ottawa or Detroit at the end of the season while using Demko as a sweetener. If Eriksson retires after collecting his signing bonus however, then it’s obviously not necessary.

To Colorado: Jacob Markstrom To Vancouver: Bowen Byram. Do ya do it?

Canucks should try and keep Toffoli over Brock for the following reasons: 1) Toffoli has a better all around game. He’s better defensively, is more physical, and can also play center if need be. 2) Toffoli, given his age, would be more likely to sign a longer term deal at a relatively decent cap hit. Toffoli should be able to be had between 6 and 7 million for 5 years. During that time, Toffoli will still likely be the player that he is today. With Brock, one od two things will happen. He will either continue to be a one dimensional, slow skating, defensively challenged player that can only snipe playing alongside Pettersson and Horvat, OR he will go back to being the dominant sniper that he was 2 seasons ago.....and if he does in fact do that, will likely command a HUGE pay raise when his contract expires (given his relatively young age, and given the fact that his current bridge deal is supposed to be a team oriented cap friendly deal with the expectation that he’ll get paid big time at a later date). For these reasons, I’d opt to go with Toffoli instead of Brock if it had to come down to that. Toffoli is a more well rounded player and can be signed to a longer term deal at a relatively cap friendly deal (ie he won’t break bank like Mark Stone and Mitch Marner did).

I don’t like your New Jersey deal from a cap perspective. Eriksson and Baertschi need to be moved in such a way where we’d not be getting long term cap obligations back. We need guys like Eriksson, Baertschi, and Sutter completely off the books before the Summer of 2021 so that we can re-sign Pettersson and Hughes.
-
This is what I’d try and do: Sign: -Markstrom -Barrie (Stecher trade) -Toffoli -Virtanen -Motte -Gaudette -Tryamkin Walk away from -Tanev -Leivo Trade -Boeser for a 1st rounder and good prospect -Baertschi with 50% retention towards the end of the summer for a draft pick. -Sutter with 50% retention towards the end of the summer for a draft pick. -Eriksson with Demko as a sweetener if Eriksson doesn’t retire after collecting his signing bonus.

This is the type of thread that will piss off the hockey gods and make us miss the playoffs altogether. Let’s actually make the playoffs before counting our chickens before they’ve hatched. Vegas is still the deepest and most dangerous team in the Pacific, while the Canucks, Oilers, Flames, Jets, Wild, Preds, and Coyotes are all around the same level. Any one of these teams can beat anyone. Getting into the playoffs and playing good hockey (regardless of the result), will be considered a good season for us. PROGRESS. That’s all that matters.

Bo always steps up for the games against Boston for whatever reason. Almost makes you wonder if he was secretly in the lockerroom back in June 2011.
-
Not a realistic idea. Bordering on Corky Thatcheresque. Eriksson will either retire after July 15th when he gets his signing bonus (which is not against the CBA), or he’ll be moved to Ottawa or Detroit with Demko being the sweetener (Ottawa and Detroit could use a good goaltending prospect that has a realistic shot of being a starter one day, and both teams also have enough cap room to accommodate Eriksson’s cap hit should he stick around for the 2020-2021 season).

Another Boeser Deal(Discussion)
Patel Bure replied to Nuxfanabroad's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I’m not saying that keeping Toffoli instead of Boeser would give us more cap space. What I said was that if the Canucks sign Toffoli, they will likely have to trade Boeser in order to create more cap space to sign Pettersson and Hughes. Let’s face it. The Canucks won’t be able to afford all three of Toffoli, Boeser, and Virtanen after this season. It ain’t happening. Yes, Toffoli is older than Brock and will come at a higher cap hit (but longer term - 5 years), but trading Brock would allow us to recoup the first that was lost in the Miller deal. We’d probably be able to get a 1st and a good prospect for Brock. With Toffoli however, there’s no way the Canucks will sign him and then flip him for a 1st. That would just make the organization look goofy, and would also give us a bad rep (ie UFA’s not wanting to sign here). -
Another Boeser Deal(Discussion)
Patel Bure replied to Nuxfanabroad's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
With Toffoli here, I would only trade Boeser under the following conditions: 1) We re-sign Toffoli 2) Virtanen demonstrates that he’s worthy of a long term contract in which the AAV appears to be above market value at first, but ends up being a significant discount for us as Virtanen continues to grow his game. 3) Boeser is moved for a 1st round pick (recoup the 1st from the Miller Trade) + prospect. This would also help us clear enough cap to sign Pettersson and Hughes. If the Canucks can’t sign Toffoli however, keep Brock. -
(Spitballing) Trade deadline predictions

Kole Lind is a young Corey Perry. Your heart is in the right place kid. I’ll give you that much. I’ll also gladly eat a plate of human $&!# if your words turn out to be correct. -
I wouldn’t even opposed to bringing in AA, but only as a Center on the 3rd line (replacing Gaudette, and so Gaudette would be a part of said hypothetical package to Detroit). Would really just depend on the cap hit that AA would get through. I don’t think we’d be able to afford him.
