  1. Not a fan of Fiala. We already have enough small and soft players on this team. Hard pass.
  2. Agreed but they will both be UFA’s in the summer of 2023 and I’m not entirely sure if either guy will stick around.
  3. 1) How many times have we qualified for the 3rd round? From what I understand, it’s zero. The two times where we qualified for the 2nd round and lost in game 7 is twice (2003 and 2020). 2) Demko “didn’t do it all by himself.” Canucks won game 6 by a score of 4-0, and won Game 2 by a score of 5-2 (a game that Demko was not even a part of). Sounds to me like you’ve got rosy colored glasses on, and makes me question you actually being a Canucks fan rather than an internet troll. 3) At the end of the day, if my aunt had nuts she’d be my uncle. A bad 2nd round loss is always better than a courageous 1st round loss.
  4. That’s not what I said. What I said was that sometimes in life, you put yourself in a position to be lucky. If the Canucks hadn’t completely dominated their January, maybe we wouldn’t have qualified for the play-ins based on points percentage. Also - I don’t see how you can say that we were not playoff worthy. We qualified by defeating Minnesota, followed by winning our 1st round match up and then pushing Vegas to a 7 game series in our 2nd round. Technically speaking, our 2020 playoffs was tied for 4th overall best season in terms of performance (tied with 2003). Only 1982, 2011, and 1994 were more impressive.
  5. So, is this Benning’s fault? Seems to me like Benning’s only fault here is that he is too loyal to Green.
  6. And if you accurately predicted that this would happen, then my hats off to you.
  7. “They were gifted a playoff spot” errrr no they weren’t buds. They had to play the Wild in the play-ins and won fair and square. Once they GOT IN to the playoffs, they took out the defending cup champs, and then lost in 7 in the 2nd round. Yes the Canucks were sliding hard prior to the Covid stoppage, but we were also playing much tighter defensively before the covid break and won 2 of our last 3 against two 2nd round calibre teams in NYI and Colorado respectively. Demko was starting to acclimate to the #1 role as well. And you know what? Sometimes you put yourself in a position to be lucky. We won almost every game during that January if I recall correctly and so from a point percentage standpoint, we earned the right to qualify for the play-ins.
  8. Yes Virtanen was a bust but where does Thatcher Demko go in a 2014 redraft? Sometimes, it’s just the way she goes. We aren’t the only team in the league to have made a gaffe with our lottery pick. Calgary and Winnipeg benefitted from our 2014 and 2016 gaffes but look at how they’ve performed at the draft in the years following as well.
  9. Horvat never played in the AHL but his development was protected at the NHL level. He wasn’t simply “gifted” the 2nd line C spot despite an impressive 2015 playoffs. Brandon Sutter was brought in to help take defensive pressure off of Bo so that Bo wouldn’t be over-exerted while he developed. Markstrom was developed in the AHL, but it was Benning’s decision to bring in Ryan Miller so that Markstrom would get more playing time in the A, while also insulating Eddie Lack as the #1. One reason why Tanev was never traded for a 1st in 2016 or 2017 (despite all the pundits screaming for it), was because Tanev’s presence allowed us to maximize the development of Hutton and Stecher while indirectly supporting the development of Markstrom. Player development isn’t just related to who is or isn’t in the AHL. Quinn Hughes also benefitted greatly from Tanev’s presence.
  10. So you don’t consider the success of Horvat and Markstrom to have anything to do with the way that Canucks choose to develop players? Wow......
  11. My guess is that you were either born in the late 90’s or early 00’s and so you’ve never experienced a Canucks rebuild before (or a rebuild in general). Rebuilds often take 5-7 years.....or more. Don’t believe me? Go have a look at all of the top teams in the league right now and see the journeys that they had to take before becoming a juggernaut. Did you know that Colorado started rebuilding around 2008, but had a lottery pick in 2017 and drafted Cale Makar? Just because a team is rebuilding, doesn’t mean that they should automatically trade every Tom, Dick, and Harry over 25 for picks and prospects. Benning spent to the cap during the rebuilding phase because he paid a premium for leadership, not because he was going for the cup. The “Benning plan” worked and we ended up making the playoffs in 2020. The 2020-2021 season was always going to be our version of the 2007-2008 season due to the transitional contracts that were still on the books (Beagle, Roussel, Player Name, to which Benning got rid of this off season since the core, in theory, was ready to compete). The anti-Benning crowd are standing there pretentiously trying to say, “we told you so,” due to the Canucks’ poor performance this season, but no one in the world could have predicted that Petey and Boeser would completely fall off a Cliff. No. The anti-Benning crowd predicted that... 1) OEL would continue to struggle 2) OEL-Myers would be a train wreck pairing 3) The Canucks would get caved in 5 on 5 4) Dickinson would be a decent upgrade over Besgle, Sutter, and Gaudette as the ‘advanced analytics’ had suggested 5) The Canucks only redeeming qualities would be that our PP would be decent + Demko would save us most nights. The *only* thing that the anti-Benning crowd got right, was that our PK this year would suck. If Pettersson and Boeser had been playing up to expectation, we’d likely be a #4 seed right now. Your New York Rangers by the way, have missed the playoff for four straight seasons themselves and so you might want to get down from the high horse that you are sitting on.
  12. Anaheim and Detroit have to Atleast make the 2nd round with their current core to prove that “what JB did was not that special.” All the Canucks are proving right now is that we are no different than the Flames (2015) and the Oilers (2017) who had second round appearances before dipping again for a few years.
  13. If he chooses to do that, we can trade him and tell him to &^@# off. Mark Stone did this to Ottawa and Ottawa were able to get decent trade value out of Mark Stone.
  14. For me personally, I’d keep Petey since he’ll be an RFA when this contract expires. Hughes is also signed for another 6 years and so he’s a keeper for me as well. Even for a guy like Brock who’ll be an RFA, he’s the type of guy that you can keep here long term. I’m all for “replenishing the cupboards” so to speak, but not in a wild directionless manner in which we trade every Tom, Dick, and Harry. Moving Horvat and Miller will allow us to recoup the firsts and prospects lost in the Toffoli, Miller, and OEL deals.
  15. [proposal] What would Bo Horvat land you at the trade deadline? This thread isn’t about IF we should move Horvat, but rather, what would we be able to get in return for Bo Horvat at the trade deadline assuming that we are well out of playoff contention by then? -JT Miller *possibly* lands you Braden Schneider+ So what would Horvat get you? Which team could use a Bo Horvat?
  16. On paper, they are three of our four best forwards. Boeser has always performed well with Horvat, as these two carried the load pre-Pettersson days. Why not try something different?
  17. I don’t mind Shaw being interim coach provided that he knows that he’s only an interim coach. The Canucks need a proven winner behind the bench at some point. Claude Julien or Bruce Budreau. Look at what Quennville, Sutter, and Trotz did for their new teams? Could any of us have predicted this play from Calgary this year given the “poo theatrics” we saw from them last year? We need a top alpha coach with a proven record. Guys like Corey Hirsch need to shot out of a cannon into the Pacific Ocean.
  18. I think so. To be honest, I’m actually still a fan of Benning and support everything he did (how is it his fault that Boeser and Pettersson are complete poo this year?) but at the end of the day, the owners have to be accountable to the fans, and so if the #FireBenning movement continues to pick up steam, Aqua has no choice. As far as Boeser goes, maybe we should hang onto him since he’s still youngish and will be an RFA. He still has plenty of time to live up to the 7.5 million but it would be risky given how he’s performed this year. Horvat and Miller however, should definitely be moved. It helps us clear cap space and also helps us recoup the 1sts and prospects (Madden) that we traded away.
  19. Completely agreed about Poolman. He’s the exact type of guy that you’d want on a 3rd pairing. Some people were upset by his signing but I actually liked the signing a lot (again, under the impression that he’d be a 3rd pairing guy for us).
  20. 1) Move all three of Miller, Horvat, and Brock for 1sts and elite prospects. 2) Fire both Benning and Green at the end of the season. Miller to the Rangers for Schneider++ would go a long way in solidifying our defense. Hughes and Schneider could be our Keith-Seabrook moving forward. I think Horvat would also land us both a 1st and an elite prospect as there are some playoff bound team that could use a good 2nd line center. Lastly, my hope is that we can move Boeser as well for a 1st or a good prospect as I don’t think qualifying Boeser at 7.5 million would be a good investment on our part. I know Horvat, Boeser, and Miller are good guys to hang onto, but we also have to be realistic and ask ourselves if we can be competitive next season as well. Miller is in his prime, while Bo and Brock have been good soldiers for us (outside of this season) and deserve to go to an environment where they can experience playoff hockey. I can’t see either of Miller or Horvat signing with us when their deals end. Right now, both Miller and Horvat will be able to fetch us great value because they have a bit of term and a good cap hit. Last but not least, I’d fire both Green and Benning at the end of the year. Firing Green right now might prevent us from hiring a good coach since most potential new coaches will wonder if/when Benning will get fired and won’t feel good about their own job security. Fire both Green and Benning at the end of the season and truly start over.
  21. Green splitting up Petey from Podz and Garland after one shift (where they dominated) is a fireable offense imo. Miller-Horvat-Boeser Podkolzin-Pettersson-Garland Should also be a solid top 6
  22. In theory, Pettersson-Horvat-Boeser should be a pretty damned good line but to your point, who the hell knows now? We can blame Benning for this current mess all we want, but the truth of the matter is that no one in the world could have predicted these "performances" by Pettersson and Boeser.
  23. Well said. In theory however, Hamonic should not have been that much of a downgrade over Tanev if it all. Furthermore, the addition of Nate Schmidt should have given us more offense from the back-end. Unfortunately, Green completely misused Schmidt.
  24. Did the Hawks really "take over" though? They outshot us 11-10 and outside of one flukey PP goal, didn't really look very dangerous. Having said that, our inability to generate any offense is a big concern. Put Petey and Brock with Horvat with Petey playing LW.
