Coyotes lose vote for new arena - future unclear
Patel Bure replied to mll's topic in General Hockey Discussion
I’m wondering if it would make sense to relocate the Coyotes to a 2nd tier city where they would be THE team. No playing second fiddle to the NBA, NFL, or MLB. A place where fans would be so appreciative of “joining the big boys” that they worship the teams’ every move. Kind of like the Roughriders in Saskatchewan. Wondering if a team like Boise old make sense? Or something even less extreme like Green Bay where the fans are already known to be crazy (in a good way). An NHL franchise in Green Bay would obviously play second fiddle to the Packers, but they’d be the only other game in town. -

Agreed. Bettman had no qualms or hesitations in getting out of Atlanta so why hold onto Arizona? -

Head is saying Mitchell. Heart is saying Greg Adams. Think I might have to go with Gus here. -
[Proposal] Trade Capitals & Canucks
Patel Bure replied to BigTramFan's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
It's not a bad idea actually but I'd probably pass. I think Highmore has the potential to be another Tyler Motte for us while I also feel that there's more there with Zack MacEwen. Both Highmore and MacEwen can also be used as centermen just incase of injuries. Also, by moving Highmore and MacEwen for Hathaway, it takes away from our depth in terms of NHL calibre players being ready to step into the line-up incase of injuries. Let Highmore and MacEwen try and prove themselves and grow their games. -
Which then begs the question: IF Podkolzin proves to be a top 6 player right from the get go, would it be in the Canucks’ best interests to move Boeser for a true top pairing RD ‘defensive defenseman’? (like a Ryan Pulock). I’m assuming that both Garland and Podkolzin will play the right side which is why I’m suggesting Boeser. In answering my own question, I probably wouldn’t consider making this move unless the following two things occur: 1) Podkolzin proves to be a worthy top 6 option. 2) Atleast one other guy, either from our 4th line or farm, proves to be a worthy 3rd line forward that can score goals (basically, filling the role that Podkolzin will be expected to play this season). So for example, maybe a guy like MacEwen, Klimovich, or Bailey.

Speaking of which, I wonder what our Power Play configuration will look like? This is my guess: PP1: Boeser-Horvat-Pettersson / OEL-Hughes PP2: Garland-Miller-[HoglanderORPodkolzin] / Myers-Rathbone
-
Pretty good list and I think it's extremely accurate. I think all of Podkolzin, Rathbone, and Juolevi will see significant amounts of NHL time this year. -Podkolzin makes our top 9. -Juolevi will be a mainstay on our 3rd pairing with Myers imo, and will get some PK time. -People will disagree with me on this, but I think Rathbone should start in Abbotsford and log big minutes there. Be the #1 guy on the team and get loads of 5 on 5 and PP time. Rathbone can then get called up to the NHL and play on the 2nd pairing if there is an injury to one of OEL or Hughes.

2022-23 salary cap, Boeser and value of our 2nd line player?
Patel Bure replied to grouse747's topic in Canucks Talk
I don’t think that’s Benning’s style however. If the Canucks are competitive and Miller is playing a huge role in that, Benning will likely keep Miller around and just let him walk away at season’s end if necessary. Having said that, you make a good point about Miller’s age and contract. Those two factors might make it difficult to trade Miller for a top calibre RD. -
In transitioning from their current projected status (i.e. a 1st round calibre playoff team) into an elite team, my guess is that the Canucks will entertain moving 1-2 of the following: -Boeser or Miller -Hughes For a legitimate top pairing shut down RD IF, 1-2 of the following take leaps in their games and can fill the roles of the departed: -Rathbone -Podkolzin -Klimovich In facilitating a trade of some kind, I believe that Travis Hamonic (only one year left after this year on his contract) or Tucker Poolman (no NTC or NMC) could be used as part of a packaged deal with one of [Boeser/Miller or Hughes]. My best guess is that.... 1) Podkolzin will prove to be a top 6 forward by the end of this season 2) Klimovich will prove that he will likely be ready for Top 9 NHL duty next season Which will prompt the Canucks to 1) Trade [Boeser or Miller] + [Hamonic or Poolman] to NYI for Ryan Pulock + one of their RW's (Pulock will be signed before traded).

The only part of their assessment that makes sense to me, is...... 1) There is a risk attached in assuming that OEL can rediscover his form from four years ago (I.e. Canucks banking on the fact that a new environment will rejuvenate OEL). 2) Can our first and second pairing RD’s adequately cover for OEL and Hughes while taking on the toughest opposing lines. -

[Proposal] Elias Pettersson change of scenery
Patel Bure replied to NMHockey's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Pettersson and Hughes for Draisaitl and Nurse (I wouldn’t do this, just playing out loud). Miller-Draisaitl-Boeser Pearson-Horvat-Garland Hoglander-Dickinson-Podkolzin Motte-Sutter-Highmore OEL-Hamonic Nurse-Myers Rathbone-Poolman Demko Halak -
Just thinking outloud. If Sutter + Dicks were hurt, here is what our lines might look like: Hoglander-Miller-Boeser Pearson-Horvat-Garland Motte-Pettersson-Podkolzin (I configured the lines this way since that Miller line played together post Petey injury last season while Pearson/Horvat have a long history with one another). Those lines aren’t ideal but aren’t terrible either.

According to those morons, we signed "Brent Sutter" to a 1 year deal. Also, they conveniently neglected to mention that we brought in Conor Garland. -
(Proposal) Myers for Subban
Patel Bure replied to ken kaniff's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
It’s a good idea in theory but NJ would need to have MASSIVE incentive if they were to take on 3 years of Myers’ contract. Why would they trade Subban Myers straight up when PK’s contract comes off the books next season? The Devils are going to need that freed up money to re-sign some of their upcoming RFA’s, etc. Myers for Subban one for one would not entice the Devils, but Hughes + Myers probably gets the Devils’ attention (I’m not in favor of doing this by the way). -
Completely agree, but you can still put that player in that spot without throwing him to the wolves. For example, letting Rathbone log big minutes in Abbotsford and then getting called up for 2nd pairing duty if one of Hughes or OEL gets injured. Rathbone looked good at the end of last season in meaningless games. It’s a solid start to his career but I think we need to see a bigger sample size in a more meaningful context. For example, when the Canucks chose to proceed forward with Demko instead of Markstrom. After a slow start when Markstrom went down, Demko started to find his game before the initial Covid outbreak in 2020. Then, in the bubble, Demko absolutely killed it.
-
I can’t. There is however, a difference between taking a well timed calculated risk and being completely reckless. Rathbone is a solid prospect but he’s not elite. Why risk throwing him to the fire like that? Let the kid develop comfortably. The Canucks have been doing an excellent job of doing this so far, and have only pushed prospects to a level that will challenge them but not over exert them. Throwing kids to the wolves in a sink or swim environment is what the Oilers and Sabres have been doing. Perhaps we disagree, but I’d do the following: 1) For this coming season, let Rathbone log big minutes in Abbotsford. Top pairing duty, top PP time, and perhaps even some PK time to help round out his game. Rathbone is given the chance to be “the alpha” of Abby. If and when one of OEL or Hughes gets injured, Rathbone gets called up to the NHL and plays on the 2nd pairing. 2) IF Rathbone kills it in both roles and impresses for the entire 2021-2022 season in both capacities, then, and only then, should the Canucks re-assess their options for the 22-23 season (I.e. promoting Boner to the NHL in a second pairing capacity while exploring options in moving Hughes to solidify the right side). That’s how I would personally do it but to each their own.
-
Rathbone is a good prospect but is nowhere near the calibre of Quinn Hughes. He could certainly be that in the future but Rathbone will need some time to develop. Even Hughes himself is not ready for top pairing duty, which is exactly why OEL was brought in. That way, the Canucks can deploy Hughes similar to how he was deployed in 2019-20 (2nd pairing duty + 1st line PP).

Head: Jean Beliveau (obvious reasons) Heart: Jarome Iginla: I’m going to go against the grain here and pick Jarome Iginla. Although he didn’t win a cup, he was exactly what you’d want out of a captain. -Could play almost any role asked of him -Elevated his game when it mattered most -Was the best player in the world for a brief time period -Stuck up for teammates. -He hit, fought, blocked shots, etc. -Iggy and Kipper almost singlehandedly won the cup for the Flames during their run in 2004. I’ll never forget how he conducted himself after Linden’s final game. He shook Linden’s hand and pretty much got all of his teammates to do the same. Iginla may not have the hardware, but he’s the greatest captain of all-time imo.

[Discussion] Any More signings You Would Like?
Patel Bure replied to Provost's topic in Canucks Talk
Good post Provost. My short answer to your question is 'no.' Let Highmore, MacEwen, and Gadjovich compete for that 12th spot and promote some internal competition. Factoring Ferland LTIR + sending three current players down to the AHL, the Canucks should have around 16.6 million in cap space to work with come this Fall. That money needs to go towards Pettersson and Hughes. Maybe Quinn Hughes gets the 8x8 Thomas Chabot deal while Petey gets something similar to the Sebastian Aho deal (8.6 x 5, and yes, I realize that Aho's wasn't quite that dollar figure). Ideally, you could sign Petey to a much longer term but the sense that I get from Petey is that he wants to make sure that he's playing for a competitive team year in year out, and so he won't commit to anything uber long term just yet. -
(Proposal) Myers for Subban
Patel Bure replied to ken kaniff's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
It's a pretty good idea in theory but NJ would need a HUGE incentive in order to take on Myers' 3 years of salary. It's one of the reasons why I was initially pondering a...... Hughes + Myers for Graves, Severson, 1st type deal (although there's no way Benning is going to move Quinn Hughes). Like I said - I don't mind your idea in theory, but I can't see NJ (or any team for that matter) taking on three years of Tyler Myers without a significant sweetener involved.
