[Signing] Oilers re-sign Darnell Nurse
Patel Bure replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Barrie seemed to do well in Colorado and then in Edmonton last year from what I understand, but he has to be used in way that complements his game. My guess is that the Oilers want Barrie on the ice as much as possible when McDavid and Drai are out there in order to create as much offensive pressure as possible. Looks like we’ll find out what will happen. :-p. Oilers got absolutely lit up in the playoffs and so that was wonderful to see. -
1) To what extent can Hamonic and Poolman be successful “yings to the yangs” for both OEL and Quinn Hughes at a top 4 pairing level? 2) To what extent can both OEL and Hughes be offensive powerhouses while limiting their defensive “faux pas’?” I think these two questions will truly determine as to how the Canucks will do as a team this year. Everything else seems really good in Canuck land. -We are very deep up front -We have great goaltending (starter and backup) -We will have two strong PP units -We will likely have a strong PK -Our left side D is stacked with solid PMD’s. -Our 3rd pairing D should be strong regardless of what combination we put out [Rathbone/OJ]-[Myers/Poolman/Hamonic] -We have depth in the form of MacEwen, Schenn, Rathbone, etc. My guess is that Juolevi will get the 3rd pairing LD spot and will play with Myers (Rathbone to Abbotsford since Rathbone won’t require waivers which will allow both OJ and Rathbone to get plenty of NHL ice time this year........Rathbone will get called up when injuries occur). So, in assessing this team, I think it will all boil down to my above two questions:

I wish Jake all the best for his future but I honestly don’t care about his situation anymore. What actually happened between him and that girl is completely irrelevant to the Canucks and Canuck fans as I far as I’m concerned. Hopefully, justice is served in whatever way that manifests.

[Signing] Oilers re-sign Darnell Nurse
Patel Bure replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
My guess is that “more palatable middle ground” wouldn’t have been able to land them a guy capable of playing on the top pairing in a shut down role....especially someone that would be good enough to cover for a guy like Tyson Barrie on that top pairing. Youre right about Adam Larsson. Larsson must have REALLY wanted out of there. -
[Signing] Oilers re-sign Darnell Nurse

Paying that much for Nurse is an overpayment but I can sympathize with Holland to a large extent. Edmonton isn’t the sexiest city in North America to say the very least and players need to be incentivized to play there. It’s the unfortunate reality of Edmonton. -
Great analysis and great point about Myers. Actually, if I was going to entertain a “Quinn Hughes to NJ” type deal, I’d probably go... To NJ: Hughes + Myers To Canucks: Graves + Severson + 1st I’m still not 100% sure if I’d move Quinn to NJ (having OEL and Quinn on two separate pairings has the potential to be an extraordinary advantage), I think the addition of Graves would give us that shut down option in terms of one of our dmen going up against opposing top lines. Still - having QH and OEL on that left side is such a huge advantage in my opinion. I think I’d rather see the Canucks try and package one of Juolevi or Rathbone one day with Myers, and clearing cap space that way (also depending on how things actually pan out with Rathbone and Juolevi).

To be honest, I’d probably go McSorely, even with the Brashear incident. McSorely could..... 1) Play both forward and defense 2) Was more than just a goon and could actually play the game and was an integral member of the core 3) Was a heavyweight 4) Came from a winning culture 5) Understood his role on the team and never deviated away from that. Always stuck up for teammates.

[Signing] Kraken re-sign Kole Lind

My best wishes to Kole Lind on a successful hockey career. -
Fully agree with you on Eichel. Dahlin seems like more of a Brian Leetch (on steroids) than a Nik Lidstrom to me. Although I believe that Dahlin’s development has been hampered by a terrible Buffalo environment, I wouldn’t make this proposed trade either. Eichel’s questionable long term health + Dahlin possibly not being able to maximize his potential = too risky of a trade to make on either front.

Predictions for Canucks opening night lineup
Patel Bure replied to Beary Sweet's topic in Canucks Talk
Agreed but I'm still of the opinion that placing Hoglander and Garland on the same line might not be the greatest idea. -
Pulock would have been great but he just signed. :-( EDIT - never mind, my mistake. Nothing to see here folks. :-p p.s._______________Would love Pulock (signed before coming here), but he'd probably cost Boeser. I'd *possibly* be open to that IF both Garland and Podkolzin prove to good top 6 forwards right away (Garland is already there), but even then, I'd be hesitant. Personally speaking, I don't want the Canucks to take away from their forward prowess to bolster their D. Canucks can roll three very good lines right now and my hope is that we can keep things this way. Bolster our D if we must, but find another way to do it.

I’d be up for that. While I’m still not entirely sure if I’d be willing to make this deal since moving a fantastic talent like Hughes always needs to be taken into consideration (that, plus having QH and OEL driving offense from the back on two separate pairings is a HUGE advantage), I doubt that the Canucks or NJ would be on board with this. Along with being a fantastic talent, Hughes is one of Benning’s prized possessions and Hughes has already established himself as an integral part of the core. I also feel like NJ will take a “wait and see approach” with Ty Smith and Luke Hughes to see if “trading up” for Quinn is really necessary. While you and I are on the subject of Juolevi, my guess Is that Benning will start OJ on the 3rd pairing this year while Rathbone starts in Abby and logs big minutes there (and getting called up when injuries occur). Rathbone might have surpassed OJ as a player, but OJ would require waivers to bounce between leagues. Based on how things unfold this season, my best guess is that the Canucks will trade one of Juolevi or Rathbone with Myers in the off season (as part of a packaged “hockey deal” or as a sweetener to move Myers if Myers’ term and money is deemed to be too risky to other teams). I do like Myers, but I think the long term key for the Canucks will be in finding a way to upgrade their D *without* trading one of their forwards to do so. ps - on an unrelated note, I’m going to call it: Tryamkin replaces Hamonic two years from now. Yes, it’s a long shot prediction but I believe that this is what will happen.

Great points. With respect to both Tyler Myers and/or Travis Hamonic (I like both dmen.....as #4’s), I think the Canucks will need to find a way to upgrade Atleast one of these guys if they truly want to go from being 1st round fodder (their current status in my opinion) into a 2nd round++ team like Colorado, Vegas, Winnipeg, Tampa Bay, Boston, Carolina, and NYI. While the idea of Hughes+Myers for Graves, Severson, and a 1st intrigues me, I’m not entirely sure if that’s something I’d do. Having both Hughes and OEL on that left side is an extraordinary advantage that the Canucks should take advantage of. I don’t think Benning would want to make that deal, and I think the Devils will do a “wait and see” with Ty Smith to see how he develops. Analyzing our current team, I could see the Canucks eventually packaging one of Juolevi or Rathbone with Myers in a “hockey deal” to bring in a more “defensive defenseman.” I’m wondering if a Rathbone+Myers to Chicago for Connor Murphy + ??? type deal would benefit both teams?

Rathbone is definitely NHL ready but I’m not sure how much ice-time he’ll get with OEL and Hughes being ahead of him on the LD depth chart. Since Juolevi would need to clear waivers, in terms of bouncing between the NHL and AHL, I’d be in favor of keeping Juolevi up here at the NHL level while Rathbone logs big minutes in Abbotsford (while also getting NHL ice time with call-ups/injuries). After a year, the Canucks can proceed accordingly depending on how things as a whole pan out. That’s what I’d do anyways. -

Predictions for Canucks opening night lineup

Oh definitely. Lockwood definitely has a legit shot of taking that spot. Klimovich would really have to blow it out of the park in order to make the big club this year. Even with that being said, I think Klimovich will be far better off logging big minutes in Abottsford. Lockwood needs to try and be on the big club even if it’s with limited 4th line minutes. Ideally, you’d have Dipietro, Rathbone, and Klimovich being among the top stars on our team down there helping the guys make a playoff push and beyond. I know a few guys have Rathbone penciled in ahead of Juolevi, and I have no doubt that Rathbone may have actually surpassed Juolevi as a player as of this writing, but I think Juolevi needs NHL ice time now even if it’s in a limited 3rd pairing capacity.......while Rathbone needs to log big minutes and develop. -

I like these line combos a lot as it takes familiarity into account. Lotto line stays in-tact + Horvat/Pearson remain as a tandem. I also think Garland has a style of game that will mesh well with Horvat’s since both players are extremely tenacious on the puck. Hoglander (as opposed to Pearson) also gives that 3rd line a more offensive element which might be enough to get Dickinson going offensively (that, plus Podkolzin). Also like your ideas for the 4th line. Ps - I wonder if Klimovich has an outside shot of making the big club? My guess is ‘no’ and that he’d be better off logging big minutes in Utica (I also feel this way about Rathbone by the way), but who knows! -
Finding a way to upgrade Myers on RD might be our only way of becoming a consistent 2nd round++ team a la Boston, NYI, Carolina, Tampa, Vegas, Colorado, and Winnipeg. Like I was saying earlier, I think the Canucks’ biggest obstacle these next few years is that they won’t be able to bring in much external help with any freed up cap space as most freed up cap will have to be used on re-upping our RFA’s. In a nutshell, the freed up cap space from Luongo recapture, Sutter, Hamonic, Miller, Halak, Pearson, Myers, etc., will have to be applied to Virtanen/Holtby buyout, new 4th line C, a new RD (Internal promotion like Woo or external help like Tryamkin?), Horvat, Hughes II (post bridge), Hoglander, and Podkolzin. In other words, the Canucks could be playing this “cat and mouse” cap game up until 2024-2025 in which they simply apply freed up cap space on re-upping pending RFA’s (and Horvat). What does this mean? In my opinion, it means that the Canucks could be a perennial 1st round loser for the next 4 years (maybe a 2nd round appearance one year + a narrowly missed playoff birth in another year). [b]That’s how I see our current team. While I think we have a lot of strengths in many different areas (forwards, goaltending, LD, 3rd defense pairing) I think our suspect “defensive prowess” on those top two pairings will prove to be too much of an Achilles heel as I don’t think that any combination of Myers, Poolman, or Hamonic will be able to bail out OEL and Hughes defensively at the top pairing or even 2nd pairing level........Atleast consistently enough. [/b] However, IF the Canucks can somehow find a legit top pair shut down guy, or a strong enough “defensive” pairing that can be used to shut down tougher match-ups, then I can definitely see the Canucks joining teams like Tampa, NYI, Carolina, Boston, Vegas, Colorado, and Winnipeg in that perennial “2nd round++” category. [b] My solution would be to “bite the proverbial boner” and trade Hughes+Myers to New Jersey for Graves, Severson, and a 1st round pick. [/b] Miller-Pettersson-Garland Hoglander-Horvat-Boeser Pearson-Dickinson-Podkolzin Motte-Sutter-[MayTheBestManWin] [13thforward] OEL-Hamonic Graves-Severson Juolevi-Myers (or Rathbone-Myers) Schenn Demko Halak I am of the opinion that this above team is not only more well rounded and joins the elite ranks, but also solidifies their future (acquiring another 1st) while creating a more flexible cap structure. Myers will be off the books whilw the Canucks wouldn’t have to worry about re-upping Hughes after his bridge deal in a few years (my guess is that Hughes will be getting a bridge). At the same time, the Canucks could have the option of walking from one and/or BOTH of Graves and Severson in two years if they feel like they needed the cap flexibility (ie if one of Jet Woo and/or Juolevi/Rathbone was ready to fill in on that 2nd pairing position). Anyways, I’m not sure if my plan from above would be feasible (or if the Canucks or NJ would be open to this), but that’s what I’d strongly consider doing. People won’t want to hear this but I’d also explore options of packaging Rathbone with Myers in “a hockey deal” to see what kind of top pairing RD’s we’d be able to possibly get (ie A Connor Murphy type guy for instance).
