  1. so you’d go Hoglander-Pettersson-Boeser Dickinson-Horvat-Garland Pearson-Miller-Podkolzin Motte-Sutter-[Gadjovich/Di Giussepe] I do like that and think it has some promise. My only problem with that above line-up is that the Petey line might lack grit and size, and might also be a bit suspect suspect defensively. Maybe in that above suggestion, switching Pearson and Hoglander might work?
  2. The Colorado Avalanche also currently have "only five" draft picks that are established roster players as of this writing: https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/teams/dr00005307.html -Cale Makar -Tyson Jost -Mikko Rantanen -Nathan MacKinnon -Gabriel Landescog They, like us, also have picks coming up in the system -Bowen Byram -Alex Newhook -Conor Timmins -Martin Kaut And have also had homegrown picks over the years move to other teams..........(Matt Duchene, Ryan O'Reilly, Kevin Shattenkirk, etc.) So again, I ask............what is the point of your observation? Tampa Bay: https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/teams/dr00008385.html -Anthony Cirelli -Braden Point -Andrei Vasilevsky -Cedrique Paquette -Nikita Kucherov -Ondrej Palat -Victor Hedman -Steve Stamkos -Alex Killorn Tampa Bay have had 9 picks "stick" since 2007 (9 in 14 years) while the Canucks have had 5 picks stick in 7 years. 5/7 = 10/14 > 9/14. So by my count, the Canucks, under Benning, have had a higher percentage of picks 'sticking' than Tampa Bay since 2007.
  3. Agreed with this. While there are many folks on Canucks twitter that have their eyebrows raised over playing Miller at Center (since we have Dickinson), it could actually be a really good idea.......especially if Podkolzin's offensive game is further along than originally projected. Pearson-Dickinson-Podkolzin is a decent 3rd line, but isn't necessarily a lock to consistently produce. Pearson-Miller-Podkolzin however could be a whole different animal. Then, if you put Dickinson with Pettersson and Boeser, Dickinson would still do a lot of the things that Miller was doing (i.e. providing the defensive and grittiness conscience while not being an offensive black hole) Dickinson-Pettersson-Boeser Pearson-Horvat-Garland Hoglander-Miller-Podkolzin (or, just go with Hoglander-Miller-Boeser here as we did post Petey injury this past season) Motte-Sutter-Highmore
  4. That's a really good deal for the Pens as ZAR is legit one of the best defensive forwards in the game. Him and Bluegar.
  5. The 2006-2007 version of Luongo would have been my choice, but any other form of Luongo after that and I’d have to pursue different options, with respect. I don’t know the other goalies all that well and so I chose Terry Sawchuk. 1994 Kirk McLean would have easily received my vote. If Tim Thomas had worn #1, he might have received my vote as well. Both ?Thomas and McLean knew how to elevate their games and inspire confidence amongst teammates when it mattered most. Perhaps if it was a contest for funniest commercials and creative twitter posts, then Luongo would get the nod from my end.
  6. I don’t understand why you’re so obsessed with “how many picks of “uncle Jim’s” has stuck around long term. Again, study some of the most successful teams in the league and you’ll see how most of these teams also have a blend of homegrown talent, trades, and signings. Look at the Canucks right now: -two of our 1sts ended up being Miller and Garland via trade. -Our 5 long term draft picks are our core players (sans Horvat), and represent each position on the ice (C=EP, D=QH, LW=NH, RW=BB, G=TD). -And again, par your request, I'm not mentioning those that are coming up in our system (Podz, Dipietro, Rathbone, Juolevi), or the departed that played at least one full season with us (Tryamkin, Gaudette, Virtanen). Buffalo have had a lot of homegrown draft picks stick around on their team (Eichel, Reinhart, Dahlin, Cozens, etc.,). How have they done the last few years? What about Edmonton from 2006-2015? (Hall, Eberle, RNH, Yakupov, etc,). How did those teams do? Can you prove that a direct correlation exists between total number of drafted picks that stay on one team for ‘x’ number of years and team point totals?
  7. An honest question: The team that I'm about to post below..........is it better or worse than the current Canucks? To NJ: Hughes + Myers To Canucks: Graves + Severson + 1st Miller-Pettersson-Garland Hoglander-Horvat-Boeser Pearson-Dickinson-Podkolzin Motte-Sutter-Highmore MacEwen OEL-Hamonic Graves-Severson Rathbone-Poolman Schenn Demko Halak I am of the opinion that the team I just posted above joins the NYI’s, Vegas’, Carolina’s, Tampa’s, Colorado’s, and Boston’s in terms of being a perennial 2nd round++ team
  8. Wondering if it would be a good idea for the Canucks to trade for Ross Johnston or Nicolas Deslauriers if they have the cap space? 13th forward that can step into the line-up and act as an enforcer if things get rough.
  9. It's why I'm wondering if MacKinnon's conduct has more adverse effects than positive, and if guys like Sakic, Yzerman, Scott Stevens, and Toews conducted themselves in a similar manner? Chara? Dustin Brown? Steve Stamkos?
  10. The idea behind Myers for Subban would be that Subban would be off the books after one year (While Myers still has three years left on his contract). After one year, the Canucks would walk from PK Subban and then go HARD after someone like Parayko or Klingberg. The risk obviously, is that those two players wouldn't be available (or sign with someone else), but the Canucks could explore other options with that freed up 9 million (i.e. having enough money to re-sign our upcoming UFA's and RFA's over the years, or perhaps going after another lower key UFA such as Connor Murphy, Josh Manson, etc.).
  11. That's why I'm wondering if Nathan MacKinnon's behaviour, even if it is well intentioned, leads to more adverse effects than positive effects.
  12. Kudos to Nathan Mackinnon for doing all that but is that kind of authoritative leadership really necessary? Were guys like Sakic, Yzerman, Scott Stevens, and Jonathan Toews like that as well? Wayne Gretzky? Mario Lemieux?
  13. Thanks homie. My only advice to you would be to make your post with the right audience in mind. Last thing you would want to do is post that on a place like HF Canucks where people would automatically dismiss your post.......or even accuse you of trolling. But yes - posting your intended post on here would be great!
  14. Motte came in from Vanek actually. but I had forgotten about that as well (figured he was acquired for a 3rd rounder). Pearson was straight up for Gudbranson, but Gudbranson was initially acquired for McCann (1st), 2nd, and a 4th. Hence, my comments (i.e. Pearson, in an indirect way, was acquired through our draft picks). You might be right about Sutter and Gudbranson, but what a lot of people forget is just how hard it is to acquire young RHD 'stay at home defensemen'. Guys like that very rarely become available. Don't believe me? Try and see what the cost would to acquire Carlo, Cernak, Dumba, Mayfield, or Pesce. The Canucks took a calculated risk on Gudbranson because if Gudbranson would have been able to pan out, the Canucks would have been able to move Tanev for a 1st round pick AND not sink our defense in doing so (i.e. overexerting Hutton, Stecher, etc.) since Gudbranson would have been able to hold the fort (if he had panned out which he obviously didn't). Sutter is a similar story. The Canucks needed a '2B' center that could help take the defensive load of the team so that both Henrik and Horvat could focus more on their natural offensive roles. Young RHD centres with face-off ability, PK ability, and ability to play 2nd line minutes are very rarely made available. Benning took a gamble here and lost. It happens, but it wasn't the end of the world. Also - you seem to be neglecting the fact that many of Benning's moves weren't made (between 2015-2019) because Benning was trying to "win the Stanley cup." Benning brought in a lot of the guys that he did because....... 1) They were renowned locker room leaders 2) They came from winning environments 3) Their presence, even if they weren't as good as they once were, would prevent kids in our system from playing in roles that they weren't ready for. You talk about a lot of Benning's bad moves as a GM but fail to take into account guys like Miller, Pearson, Garland, Motte, and Highmore. Rebuilds are a common part of pro sports and I've yet to see Benning's Canucks do anything "out of the ordinary" in a negative way. We went through something similar in the mid-late 90's. 2015: 1st round / 1996 = 1st round 2016: DNQ / 1997 = DNQ 2017: DNQ / 1998 = DNQ 2018: DNQ / 1999 = DNQ 2019: DNQ / 2000 = DNQ 2020: 2nd round / 2001 = 1st round 2021: DNQ / 2002 = 1st round And now the Canucks look like they will be trending upwards again as a playoff team. 4 years straight of missing the playoffs + non-linear progression is to be expected (i.e. remember how the Canucks made the 2nd round in 2007 and then missed the playoffs in 2008?.......what happened from 2008-2013?) Miller-Pettersson-Boeser / acquired-draft-draft Hoglander-Horvat-Garland / draft-draft-acquired Pearson-Dickinson/Podkolzin / acquired-acquired-draft Motte-Sutter-Highmore / acquired-acquired-acquired OEL-Hamonic / acquired-signed Hughes-Poolman / draft-signed [JuoleviORRathbone]-Myers / draft-signed Demko / draft Halak / signed To me, the above demonstrates that Benning has done well with both drafting and acquiring players. So, with respect to your post, I'm not entirely sure that I understand your criticism.
  15. See? This is where the Coyotes need to get some advice from the Calgary Flames. If you’re going to sign or acquire ex-Canucks players, target GOOD players!
  16. Can you please show me a current NHL team that has drafted (consistently) “two NHL players per draft” that actually stuck with their teams beyond one season? Again, look at the Canucks: Current: Pettersson, Boeser, Hoglander, Horvat, Podkolzin, Hughes, Juolevi, Rathbone, Demko, Incoming: Dipietro Former: Virtanen, Gaudette, Tryamkin Guys like Dickinson, Miller, Pearson, Garland, Highmore, and Motte were brought in from our picks (directly and indirectly). So again, I’m not sure if I’m understanding your argument.
  17. I wonder if HF Canucks poster Kanucks25 even realizes that his idol teams (Toronto, Colorado, Toronto, Tampa Bay, Toronto, Carolina, Toronto, NYI, and Toronto) also struggled for many years before becoming elite.......although Toronto still hasn’t won a playoff round since 2004.
  18. Let’s look at this from another perspective: Draft picks highlighted in black. Miller-Pettersson-Boeser Hoglander-Horvat-Garland Pearson-Dickinson-Podkolzin Motte-Sutter-Highmore OEL-Hamonic Hughes-Poolman [RathboneORJuolevi]-Myers Demko Halak So by my count,... -8 draft picks have made the team -5-6 1st rounders (depending on whether it’s Juolevi or Rathbone that makes the team) -2-3 non-1sts The Departed, but played on the Canucks for at least one full season: -Gaudette -Virtanen -Tryamkin The rest of our current roster: -Miller acquired from a 1st -Garland acquired from a 1st -Pearson acquired from a 1st (McCann), 2nd, and a 4th in an indirect way -Motte acquired for a 3rd -Highmore acquired for a 5th in an indirect way (Gaudette) Previous roster players acquired with picks that played at least one full season: -Baertschi -Granlund So, either I’m not fully understanding your argument, or you seem to have some kind of misguided philosophy that teams need to be built exclusively through draft picks. I am of the belief that eight picks on a team is a solid number. Can you provide examples of successful teams that have more picks on their team?
  19. Do you mind showing me your math? I might be a bit off here. It’s to my understanding that we have 17.5 million in cap space (14 + 3.5 Ferland LTIR). After Dickinson (2.5?) and Juolevi (1?), we will have 14 million. I don’t doubt that we have tons of space to sign Petey to a long term deal and/or match any predatory offer sheets. My biggest concern is that signing Petey to a long term deal will impact the amount that we can give Quinn Hughes. We are already seeing how much dmen are getting in this off season. There’s no way Quinn will accept anything below 7 million nor should he. If we are LUCKY, he will accept a Zack Werenski-ish 7 million * 3....and if that were to happen, Petey would have to accept a similar AAV. If we sign Petey to 8.5-9.5 million however, then we would only be able to offer QH between 5.5 and 6.5 which would be a massive slap in the face to QH.
  20. Awesome post my friend. :-) Here’s how I see our current roster in a redraft: 2008: Luke Schenn = 1st round pick 25-30, Tyler Myers and Travis Hamonic = 1st round pick 20-25 2009: OEL goes 1st round between 10-15 in a redraft 2011: JT Miller goes 1st round between 15-20 in a redraft 2012: Tanner Pearson goes 1st round Top 20 in a redraft. 2013: Bo Horvat = 1st round pick #5 2014: Thatcher Demko = 1st round pick = top 15. Tryamkin, if he returns, is 1st round pick = 25-30 2015: Boeser = 1st round between 10-12; Conor Garland = 1st round 12-15. 2017: Pettersson = 1st round 2nd or 3rd overall pick 2018: Hughes = 1st round 3-5 overall pick. 2019: Podkolzin = 1st round 5-8 pick, Hoglander = Top 20-25 1st round pick
  21. My prediction is: -1 million for OJ (bridge) -2.5 million for Dickinson -7 million for Hughes (bridge) -7 million for Pettersson (bridge) That’s the only way I see things working given our cap space (14 million + 3.5 LTIR for Ferland). If Pettersson requires a 9 million dollar deal of some kind, then I think we might have to consider the possibility of Hughes being traded to New Jersey. NJ has also kinds of cap space and already has two of the Hughes brothers there.
  22. -The Canucks won’t be able to pay Hughes fair value give what they’ll need to pay Pettersson -New Jersey has tons of cap space + two others Hughes brothers To NJ: -Quinn Hughes -Tyler Myers To Canucks: -Ryan Graves -Damon Severson -2023 1st round Hoglander-Miller-Boeser Dickinson-Pettersson-Podkolzin Pearson-Horvat-Garland Motte-Sutter-Highmore MacEwen Graves-Severson OEL-Hamonic Juolevi-Poolman Demko Halak
