My prediction is that our season will be similar to the Oilers’ season of this past season. High octane offense + suspect defense + 1st round exit
-
No worries man. I’d probably pass on it as well to be honest but I’m just looking for good arguments as to why people would pass on this. Eichel’s upcoming surgery is obviously is a major issue, while Dahlin hasn’t looked all that great in Buffalo. I do get it. I just can’t help but wonder as to how these two guys would look in our system with a clean Bill of health + maximized potential.
-
Pure Devil’s advocate position. While Eichel has health issues, and Dahlin has struggled, there’s absolutely no denying their potential and peak. At their peaks, as much as I might not want to admit it, they collectively blow Petey and Hughes out of the water. Eichel is a top 5 center while Dahlin’s potential is that of a two way generational talent. Buffalo is in dire need of a culture change, while Vancouver might be in need of a top pairing shut down guy in the future. If the Canucks are looking to “swing for the fences” and “go big or go home,” then this is the deal that could set them apart. The risk however, is that Eichel doesn’t end up being the same player psotnnefk surgery while Dahlin may have already been ruined beyond repair.

[proposal] Pettersson/Hughes for Eichel/Dahlin “swing for the fences?” Before I begin this post, I want to reiterate that I do not think this will happen nor do I necessarily think that it should happen. Just trying to see things “from the other side.” What I will say however, is that both Eichel and Dahlin, at full health, and at full potential, absolutely blow away both Pettersson and Hughes at full peaked potential, and if the Canucks TRULY want to swing for the fences and ice the best possible future team, then having Eichel and Dahlin here instead of Petey and Hughes would likely be the solution. Why? Because..... 1) Eichel, at full health, and full potential, is a Top 5 center in this league. Period. There’s McDavid, Mackinnon, Matthews, and then a next tier of centers that include Eichel, Crosby (aging), Draisaitl, Barkov, and perhaps a few others that I’m forgetting. Guys like Pettersson and Sebastian Aho would be somewhere in that 10-15 spot. So - if the Canucks TRULY want a franchise center in the truest sense of the word, then Eichel would be that guy. 2) Dahlin, at full potential, is about 90% as good as Hughes/Makar offensively, but is MUCH MUCH MUCH better defensively. Yes, Dahlin’s atrocious defensive numbers in Buffalo would suggest otherwise, but let’s not forget.....it’s freakin Buffalo. Everyone has sucked in Buffalo for the better part of the last 15 years. But seriously - there’s a reason why Dahlin was being considered to be a “generational” talent back in 2018. The “Connor McDavid” of defensemen. The “Brian Leetch on steroids.” Dahlin, at maxed potential, is a two way beast that can pretty much do everything. In Chess, he’d be the Queen of the chess board. An ugly Swedish 6’3 drag queen, but a queen nonetheless. So - the point I’m making is this: If the Canucks truly want to go for the cup over these next few years, then having a true franchise center and a true two way all situations “generational talent” defenseman just might get them there. Why Vancouver does this: -see reasons above -short term cap relief. Pettersson + Hughes, as of today, will likely cost more than both Eichel and Dahlin. -swing for the fences -IF everything worked out, the Canucks would basically have no weaknesses. Their only real current weakness is that they might be lacking a true top pairing shut down guy......but IF Dahlin were to live up to that potential, that problem would be solved. And who better for Dahlin to learn from than OEL and Brad Shaw? Why Buffalo does this: -Culture change. Plain and simple. Things have become so toxic in Buffalo that they need to completely revamp the team and culture. Eichel already wants out of there and the Sabres have already started to ruin Dahlin’s development. -Buffalo can give Petey and Quinn their well deserved long term money right now if I understand correctly, which will allow poor JP Barry to finally feed his family. Miller-Eichel-Garland Hoglander-Horvat-Boeser Pearson-Dickinson-Podkolzin Motte-Sutter-Highmore OEL-Hamonic Dahlin-Myers Rathbone-Poolman Demko Halak

Here is what a Pettersson + Hughes for Eichel + Dahlin deal would look like (note - I’m not advocating this.......illustrative purposes only) Miller-Eichel-Garland Hoglander-Horvat-Boeser Pearson-Dickinson-Podkolzin Motte-Sutter-Highmore OEL-Hamonic Dahlin-Myers Rathbone-Poolman Demko Halak IF Eichel was able to get healthy and go back to the way he was playing (ie top 5 center in the NHL) and IF Dahlin was able to come here and maximize his potential of being a faster and stronger version of Nikalas Lidstrom (IF being the operative word), then the Canucks would be right up there with Tampa Bay, Vegas, Carolina, NYI, Boston, and Colorado.

Elias Pettersson | Quinn Hughes - Contract Discussion Thread

Maybe New Jersey’s message board should make YOU an offer sheet (don’t worry about us matching the offer by the way). -
[discussion] Time to trade Oli Jouveli?
Patel Bure replied to Bertuzzipunch's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Hopefully, OJ can still be that guy as originally projected. People often forget that OJ isn’t a true D+5 due to him having suffered two major injuries. His Covid illness last year was also more severe than most others on the team. OJ has had a rough path so far and so I’m interested to see how he develops with an entire healthy season under him. Given all of his obstacles so far, I’d say that he’s consistently improved every year even if his gains have been moderate. But make no mistake about it. IF OJ can become a young version of Alex Edler, the Canucks will join the elite ranks of the NHL. A top pairing shut down guy is the only real piece this team is missing right now. -

We don’t know that yet. Maybe training camp will tell a different story? Even if OJ were to get sent down, maybe he lights it up in Abottsford while looking very impressive during call up stints here, which ultimately drives up his overall trade value. Why trade Juolevi when his value isn’t all that high right now anyways? Why take away depth from Abbotsford or even to the NHL Canucks just incase there are injuries? Doesn’t make sense to me. OJ also has a two way style while Rathbone is an offensive defenseman like Hughes. The Canucks biggest need right now is a top pairing match ups guy and so we’d have a massive advantage if OJ became that guy. Wait and see on Juolevi. Trading him right now would be incredibly short sighted imo. -

No, not yet. Give Juolevi this year to see if he can take the next step. IF Juolevi can end up being that all situations two-way defender that can take on tough match-ups, it would be a MASSIVE win for the Canucks because he is EXACTLY what this team needs right now. Trading wise, I doubt Juolevi has much value right now, and you wouldn't even be able to use Juolevi as a sweetener to move someone like Myers (While I don't dislike Myers, I feel that his 6 million can be put to better use if this team is to truly take the next step, but that's something I can elaborate further on in a different thread). Bottom line? Keep Juolevi for another year or so, let the guy develop (injury free hockey hopefully), and see where he ends up. -
I think the key for this team will be how our top two pairings perform: OEL-Myers / Hughes-Hamonic. If those two pairings kill it in their roles, then I think we could easily be a 2nd round+ calibre team. For me, everything else looks solid. -Depth up front with a blend of different player types (snipers, grinders, playmakers, etc.) -Great PMD's on the left side -Solid goaltending -Very good 13th forwards (MacEwen), 7th dman options (Juolevi), and depth on the farm. -A very good 3rd pairing in Rathbone and Poolman (I'm assuming) Even Hughes and Hamonic, in an isolated vacuum, are very good #3 and #4 options. I just wonder if they can gel together? Because I'm not sure if they really achieved that last season, but our team defense as a whole should be much stronger this year as well. For me, that biggest question is that top pairing with OEL and Myers. Can OEL go back to what he was 4-5 years ago? Will Myers be able to handle top pairing duties going up against the top lines of other teams? Will OEL and Myers, collectively, be able to hang defensively? These are the biggest questions marks for me.

[Report] David Krejci heading to Czech Republic
Patel Bure replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Solid player, solid career. Best wishes. -
Lets see how you did: 1) We kept Hamonic 2) Edler is gone 3) No return from Tryamkin (as an aside, he would have fit this team like a glove the way that we've configured our defense.....maybe our future Hamonic replacement?) 4) Loui traded with no retention 5) Roussel traded with no retention
-
He had a hell of a career, but no. Rathbone and Juolevi need to be competing for that 3rd pairing LD for their development.

The original plan with Ferland was to have him play with Petey and Boeser if I recall correctly. Ferland-Pettersson-Boeser Pearson-Horvat-Miller That top 6 would have checked the boxes from a grit standpoint had Ferland been himself. Oh well. I’m happy for Ferland that he’s making the correct decision and my hope is that he can live a normal and healthy life with his friends and family from here on out.

Predictions for Canucks opening night lineup
Patel Bure replied to Beary Sweet's topic in Canucks Talk
Thanks man. Only reason why I switched Boeser and Garland around is because I actually think they are better stylistic fits on those lines. Despite his small size, Garland is a grinder and very tenacious in the corners. He can snipe, be a playmaker, and help Pettersson in terms of digging pucks and/or getting in the open for Petey. On the 2nd line, I feel like Horvat can be the guy to win board battles on that line and clear space for Boeser as Boeser sets up shop. Both Hoglander and Boeser are dually comfortable being playmakers and snipers and so I think they will also feed off well with one another. Having Hoglander and Garland on the same line scares me a bit due to their combined lack of size and so I'd rather see them play apart. -
Thoughts on Jimbo's moves and this off-season
Patel Bure replied to Silky mitts's topic in Canucks Talk
I love your optimism but I think this something that I'll need to see to believe. This potential OEL-Myers is giving me nightmares.........like taking a first cousin to the prom type nightmares. Really hope to be proven wrong here. I have faith and confidence in this management group and have defended them from Day One and so I'm not going to back down now. -

“All the eggs in one basket” I know the lines below won’t be the final configuration (see above posts in this thread for more orthodox line combinations), but here is my alternative line combination plan. Agreed that Miller will likely be the LW on Perry’s line. Still - would be nice to have that option though. If Podkolzin shows great offensive potential early on, then who knows? Maybe Green does infact go with Pettersson, Horvat, and Miller down then middle. Green and Benning also know how the Canucks performed when Petey went out of the line-up pre Covid outbreak. Nucks were 8-3-2 with Miller at center. Nucks definitely have that option in their back pocket. Hoglander-Miller-Boeser (post Petey injury) Pearson-Horvat-Garland Dickenson-Pettersson-Podkolzin While I doubt that we will see the above lines thrown for an extended period of time, maybe we do see it for a period or something to change things up, given what we saw during that 8-3-2 stretch. -
Bubble Myers would be awesome! If Myers can go back to playing like that and just pick his spots in terms of when to be a nasty SOB like Pronger, then I’m all for him being here. From a coaching standpoint, I’d even tell Myers to let the other three guys on the left side take care of the offense while you play a more defensive and physical style of game. If Myers could re-invent himself a little here I think that would go a long ways.
-
Are you sure about that? If so, would we need a sweetener or would it be a straight up hockey deal?
-
This would actually be an unbelievable deal for Vancouver since Subban would only be on the books for one season. Unfortunately, I can't see the Devil's agreeing to this due to the term on Myers. But yes, I would absolutely make this deal. Walk from Subban at the end of the season and then go extremely hard after Parayko, Manson, or Murphy in the off-season.

I think Poolman is a perfectly fine 3rd pairing 6th dman. 2.5 million is a pretty standard AAV for someone in that position if I’m not mistaken. Placing Poolman in a top 4 role however and I think you’re asking for trouble.
